The price is great and the quality is good. It's pretty hard to screw up a lot of the things on the menu but for the price the quality is much better than one could expect. Myself, I favor the chicken salad sandwich on toasted wheat and with a coke its under $5 which is a deal in Boston.
Aside from the price and the quality the clientele and the service is a riot. Having lived in the North End for a couple of years I have to say that it is spot on for the people in the area. You have hefty boisterous guys working the counter, old ladies who speak only Italian walking in, loud middle aged Italian men who sit in there for much longer than they need to. Young "hip Italian-Americans" and then your common, everyday business man who looks like a fish out of water.
Worth at least one visit to get the neighborhood feel. -

Here's the thing with Mangia Mangia: a bacon cheeseburger is $4. (Actually it's $3.85 but you put your change in the jar on the counter - it benefits retards or something.) That's hella cheap!
And it's honestly a really good burger, too. It's not the same kind of burger you get when you pay $8 for one in a sit-down restaurant - that kind of burger and $4 burgers are actually different food. They should have different names. I will call $4 burgers at Mangia Mangia lunchburgers and $8 burgers at James Gate dinnerburgers.
So anyway, Mangia Mangia makes a superlative lunchburger. And it's also classic North End; all the locals come here. You want an authentic North End experience, you should go here for lunch. -

When I worked at Regina's I went here every day. It's the North End's best greasy spoon.
When I go in and order their Chicken Escarole Soup (THE BEST) I always take delight in hearing the guy at the counter shout "Ma, soup to go!" Where is older parents are working in the back kitchen.
They cook to order, which is awesome. If I want a runny egg, thats what I get. When you order chicken salad, they make it fresh right in front of you.
This place is also SO cheap! You aren't going to find food for this price any place else. It's excellent.
The only gripe is they aren't open on weekends and past four, but maybe that's a good thing because I'd be ordering tater tots well done for dinner every night. -

Oh hai there little North End deli! I've been here for two years and I didn't see you there!
My office moved to this area about two years ago and I have been starved for a little corner deli with a greasy griddle and good breakfast and lunch food. A coworker had the idea to go here today and it was exactly what I have been looking for all this time. Grilled cheeses and sandwiches any way you want; eggplant parm, basic soups of the day (standards like chicken noodle and minestrone) and eggs off the griddle in the morning.
Is it fancy? No. But sometimes all you want is a greasy grilled cheese and I finally found a place to give it to me. -

You know, I'm really not sure about these glowing reviews. Mangia Mangia is a lunch counter. It's pretty hard to screw up a chicken parm sub. That said, the staff is in fact morbidly obese and very friendly; they'll even walk orders across the street to old ladies in the housing complex. Locals apparently get to skip the long lunch line and place their orders directly with Joseph.
And, there's something to be said for eating lunch under dueling photos of Mussolini and Padre Pio surrounded by "contractors" on eternal lunch breaks. -

I'll basically say ditto to what kitty p.'s boyfirend said. With an emphasis on the afordability and I'd say it's even a step above what you typically find around this area.
New Englanders have a bit of a love affair with the roast beef sandwich. There's enough places out there that supposedly specialize in this sandwich. Mangia does the roast beef sandwich a solid. Thin slices stacked thick, nice toasted bun, and whatever else you want on it. The ingredients here, like most places in the North End are fresh and snappy. And yes, the "Mangia Burger", as illustrated on their front window, is a great deal and one tasty burger. Also, check out their daily specials -- they're usually a good combo for a good price and they won't steer you wrong.
Chances are, if you're coming here for lunch, the small place is already packed. But the old photos and whatnots that cover the walls are an entertaining diversion as you stand around waiting for your sandwich. If you are lucky enough to get a seat, you'll be able to enjoy eavesdropping on some classic local flavor from the neighborhood. The staff here will know every other person that comes in by name and what their regular lunch is. Nice friendly atmosphere.
Come to think of it, I don't come here often enough. -

Place: Conviently located in the North End. Small place seating about 20 people. It closes at 3pm I believe
People: If you are coming here for lunch I recommend coming after the lunch crowd, around 1:30 pm. Call in ahead for pickups. The staff is very friendly and they seem to know a lot of their patrons by name. Usually the same people come by everyday for lunch so you get a lot of regulars.
Price: AMAZING! On mon., their meatball sub costs 3.75. They have a special for each day of the 5 day week. Steak bomb costs about 7.00
Food: Probably the best thing about this place 2nd to price. Everything I've had there (meatball sub, steak bomb, burger) was delicious. Good proportions and everything is homemade. Be wary if you are watching your cholesterol or diet because their food is greasy, but then again which steak bomb isn't. -

Consistent, quality, delicious, cheap. This is my ideal lunch spot. I've never been disappointed with the food or service. It is definitely a local, neighborhood establishment, but show up more than once and you'll start to feel like a local.
The chicken parm is awesome (get it with extra sauce if you want more of delicious flavor). -

Great local sandwich and burger joint deep in the back streets of the North End. Some may call it a greasy spoon, I call it the best burger around for $6. Big toasted sesame roll, huge patty that fills the bun (pet peeve of mine if it doesn't), perfectly crisp thick cut bacon and all the fixings for a great price. Tater tots are a MUST and are delicious with the burger. Just be warned: rare, medium, well done - there all the same:) Great spot for a good burger CHEAP!

i'm posting this review on behalf of my boyfriend, who refuses to sign up for a yelp account but wanted to review anyway.
"on its own, i would give it 3 stars, but in the realm of north end cheap lunch options i would give it 4 stars. mangia mangia in many ways typifies the typical north end eating establishment. on the walls are many pictures of family members, racehorses, italian political figures, etc etc. and you know that the food is going to be good because every single person behind the counter is morbidly obese. they're very friendly and the food on the whole is good but the highlight of any mangia mangia dining experience is the mangia burger, which is just a hamburger but it's cooked very well and they usually toast the bun a little bit so that it's tasty, juicy, and delicious. with fries, that's only $4.50, so it's really cheap." -

Been coming to mangia-mangia for years and it has never let me down. I recently stopped by for breakfast and still good. This place does everything consistent including the burger that rocks. Go Johnny keep doing your thang!

Might be the best meatball sub I've ever had. I'm scoring the meatball sub only. Lots of melted provolone, huge meatballs (there were 8!), and soft bread. SO. FREAKIN. GOOD.

This is a classic case of you get what you pay for. While I have only been there once (so many other options in the North End), it was good, not great, and not bad, thus the 3 stars. The key here is the price. Its cheap...the cheapest spot around. I had a cheesesteak and fries (call the cardiologist), and it was $6 bucks. Not bad. Quality was good, price was great, but not a 5 star joint.
