Brentwood, CA
We use to drive to Berkeley because none of the local sushi joints were up to our standards...until Jack relocated from San Francisco.
All of my friends and family who live in Brentwood swear by Mangetsu and we have been coming here for years. I agree with some of the other Yelpers that the portions are smaller than other places in the area (Jack is all about quality vs. quantity) and sometimes service can be a little slow, but Jack takes great pride in his food. If you sit down at the bar and speak with him, you can receive quite an education on what to order as well as how to eat your meal like a true Japanese person.
If you are looking for bigger portions or fancier ambiance, Mangetsu is not your place. If you want fresh delicious sushi, a wide variety of sake, and a cozier local's favorite, you will love Mangetsu.
***When they are open for lunch, they offer a fantastic bento box. -

Okay, me and the bf felt like getting out of town so we decided to check out this place in Brentwood. Hmmmm...Sushi in Brentwood (kind of sketch) but we decided to check it out anyways. I was pretty surprised by the sushi - it was just splendid. I can't remember exactly what we ordered, but everything was splendid. The rolls are pretty small (which is an upset), but overall pretty good for Brentwood, right?
Customer service is good. Quick and friendly - just how I like it.
If you're ever in the area and craving Sushi, this place isn't so bad.
On http://restaurant.com you can also get coupons for this place. Just fyi... -

Unfortunately Mangetsu is closed down. It's a major bummer because it was easily the best sushi spot in the area.

Mangetsu is in the top three reasons why I miss living in Oakley.
The food here is absolutely amazing. By far some of the best Sushi I have ever had in my life. They have some of the most creative and ingenious rolls I have ever seen in my life. That's what makes this place unique, as from their terrific food. And that's what is important about Sushi places. Good sushi is really hard to come by, so when you find a place that has excellent sushi you'll keep coming back. They can have terrible customer service, and not be as clean as you'd like, but if the sushi is excellent, you'll keep going back.
Luckily, asides from the wonderful food, Mangetsu is a wonderful hangout. They have a really cool sake bar, where you and some friends can go and kick back for a while. The place is really clean, and the service is absolutely amazing.
What's really funny is when I moved out of my father's house, he got another girl to move in and she worked at Mangetsu. So whenever I would visit for a day or a weekend or something she would always bring me home a take out box full of sushi...seriously does it get any better then free Mangetsu sushi? I didn't think so either. Sadly, she doesn't live there anymore, and I get no more free Sushi.
I'm fortunate enough to enjoy food at Mangetsu usually once a month when I make my run to the Brentwood Game Exchange to raid them for their Playstation and Nintendo 64 games. Mangetsu is right across the street, so every time I go out there, I always enjoy sushi from Mangetsu before I make the hour long journey home.
All in all Mangetsu has some of the best sushi I have ever had in my life. If you ever find yourself in the Brentwood area, I highly recommend this place. I promise, you will not be disappointed. -

I hate when I do this but I'm giving 3.5 stars. My husband and I stopped here on Sunday for sushi.
I'd been told by a couple people I'd met that we absolutely HAD to go here. So, we did.
We ordered the calamari and the almond crusted prawns to start and three different rolls.
Don't get me wrong the food was good but the portions seemed small. Maybe I'm just a big fat ass but I've had rolls that were far bigger elsewhere.
The maguro and sake nigiri was very good.
The bar beverage choices are limited, unless you want sake - they offer a huge variety of that! I believe the cocktail I had was called a schochu (?) It was like a martini only I doubt it had any vodka in it. I think at Mangetsu its more about presentation than anything else. The beautiful way in which every item was plated and served to us made me think I was at a fancy five star restaurant in San Francisco!
There were only two other tables in use besides us maybe that had something to do with the spectacular service we recieved. Our waitress was friendly and attentive and took her time answering the myriad of questions we had.
I'll definitely go back since she gave us a 10.00 off coupon and the prices to start are very afforble. -

Who would have guessed that an awesome Japanese restaurant could be found in the middle of no where?
Like everyone here I enjoy everything about Mangetsu. (Lucky me, I work across the street from there!)
They have got great rolls (Mike Roll, JR roll, and yummy, fresh Shiro Maguro and Hamachi! Yummm.
Jack-a-san and Jenny-san are great hosts and the restaurant has an amazing feel to it.
Make sure to try the NASU challenge. It's a tough one! I won't spoil the secret of what it is, just make sure you try it.
I took off one star because no Japanese place can compare to Zushi Puzzle in San Francisco. Check out the reviews! -

Fish was NOT fresh. Gross.
And the food was way overpriced for what they served and offered. I'll stick to getting sushi in Concord/Walnut Creek -

Japanese food is more than just sushi. There, now that my disclaimer is out of the way...
I came here looking for ramen with a backup choice of donburi. And I'm always going to order gyoza at every Japanese restaurant that I try.
My server was very nice and friendly, helpful. She insisted that I try the tonketsu ramen.
My gyoza arrived first and it was soggy. My ramen was overcooked. The food was disappointing--it did not satisfy.
I should have gone to Santa or Ryowa or Tampopo, but I didn't want to drive that far.
Needless to say, I won't be back for the gyoza or the ramen. -

Full disclosure: I had never had sushi before (I know!!), so I can't really compare.
For starters, edamame. Yum, what's not to like? I think they were $3 a bowl--reasonable, I think.
My husband and I shared the vegetarian sushi platter. It was about $13, and was Plenty of Food. 12 or so good side sushi rolls, and maybe six smaller ones? Plus miso soup and a salad. Very fresh, very tasty.
Also, picky kid was with us. He tried a bit of miso soup (after I fished all the kelp out of it), and had some rice, but then was HAPPY AS A CLAM when my brother-in-law procured a bowl of 100% plain steamed tofu for him. I am crazy in love with restaurants that will accomodate requests like that; A+, Mangetsu!! -

I am pleasantly pleased with Mangetsu. I LUV Jack....chef. He is always so warm, welcoming and entertaining. They have some of the best rolls in the east east bay. I had a recent baaaad experience at another local restaurant and to vanquish that experience I headed to Mangetsu for a proper sushi fix.
This place is by far my favorite in this area... YUM! -

Have I told you that this place is great? Well it is, it is my favorite Japanese restaurant.
This is where me and my bf go whenever we have a bad experience with another Japanese restaurant. We've had to do it quite a few times in the past couple months and Jack always makes everything better. When Jack's not there Kinichi makes things better as well.
We are happy when we find out we've decided to go to Mangetsu for dinner. Just yesterday all I could think about was dinner all day and I was extremely happy probably because I knew I was going to see Jack and crew for dinner.
Thanks for the great food guys and the great atmosphere.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Hubby went last night and there was a sign on the door saying closed due to family illness as well as they aren't taking the http://restaurant.com stuff as of Oct 1. Sucks that we bought $100 worth on Sept 26 and didn't get a chance to use it.

The kids loved their sushi, but it wasn't anything exotic. California roll and unagi. The tempura was very good. They past my tempura test...if the broccoli is not gummy, then the rest should be good.
The only miss was the curry. I had the daily special and the curry was mostly disintegrated potato mixed in yellow curry sauce. Very disappointing because it was the special...nothing special about this dish =(
Big pluses for everything else...very nice servers (a little on the slow side, but I guess it was a busy afternoon), excellent tea, yummy bento boxes. -

I have gone here for years and since Lucy's Asia Bistro closed their doors I thought this place would have a niche in the market--I was WRONG.
The last 3 times we have gone here, they either make our roll wrong and we have to send it back (mind you, they put all the rolls on 1 plate, so they take away everyone's rolls). Or they forget to make someone's roll which is very annoying, especially because I like to wait to eat until everyone has their food. Their rolls have shrunk to microscopic size as well... So basically in the last 3 months this place has gone to the pits.
the sad thing for them is there is usually a huge group of us who always come together or meet up there, and over the years we have spent a lot of money there! Needless to say we drive out to Antioch now for the best sushi ever.. and WAY better service. I can see them closing their doors because of the lack of paying attention to their comment cards or listening to what we have to say on Yelp. Its a damn shame. -

BEST SUSHI I'VE EVER HAD! The owner's Jack and Jenny are great people. This is by far my favorite restaurant. It is clean, fresh and the service is outstanding. Their rolls are so creative and designed by customers as much as the chefs. I highly reccomend the Chopper roll and my own roll that made it on the menu over a year ago, the Lexus roll. They have a wonderful premium sake menu and sake tasting nights during the week. On weekends, the sake bar is open and offers a variety of sake inspired cocktails. Everything from the edamme to the uni is fabulous and fresh. If you're a sushi fan, I highly reccomend giving Mangetsu a try.

We have had both good experience and not so good experience with the food at Mangetsu. Portion sizes and food quality are inconsistent - however we purchased a gift certificate from http://restaurant.com on Oct. 20th and decided to give it another try last night. To our surprise when we showed up (to an EMPTY restaurant) there was a sign on the door saying effective Oct. 1st they will no longer honor the gift certificates. As of this morning, they are STILL POSTED on http://restaurant.com ... is it for marketing purpose? Do they think that after people buy it, get in the car and drive over there, they'd stay anyway and just pay? I think it's pretty bad customer service and we will not be returning. I'd rather drive just a little further and go to Shirasoni or am open to finding a new local sushi place!

If you like your sushi deep fried and covered in all kinds of sauces then you're in luck...90% of the menu is covered under one or both of these categories. Unfortunately, I hate those two things in my sushi. Authentic? Nope. Sushi? Nope. Pleasing to a wide variety of palates? Obviously, but not mine.

Too bad there is no way to give just a half a star. This place is HORRIBLE. I heard from many people that this place was great so I tried it with my fiance and wow... the service was negligent, the restaurant didn't project cleanliness and the sushi was terrible. The first time I have ever seen grease come off of a Tempura Roll. As far as Sushi goes in Brentwood...I'll keep to going to out of area restaurants that are a bit more culturally rich than Brentwood.

Nice atmosphere with some interesting decor. I was surprised at how many people were there for a Thursday evening. The rolls were pretty good I suppose, but I wouldn't say the best I've ever had. I could tell that everything was fresh which is good. I did find it interesting that the rolls were cut thinner to make 8 pieces in an order instead of the typical 6. My friend ordered Teriyaki Chicken which I took a taste of. It was not very Teriyaki-ish if that can make sense. The sauce was completely mixed in with the rice which is not typical of a Teriyaki Chicken.Maybe it was an off night or something, but this was just o.k.

I heard this was a good place to try out from my family and even my dining group came here once (without me). However, the service was below average. Guess, I'm spoiled from eating out in SF. Our waitress had an attitude and seemed impatient even though she was only attending to 3 tables - including ours. Zero personality. The food was mediocre at best. I ordered tempura which was served luke warm and and a bit greasy.

Wow, are we talking about the same restaurant here or is this southern Brentwood, CA? After reading all the reviews, I practically begged hubby to take me here last night. I raved all about it based on the yelpers' comments and to our dismay, found it so unappealing. First of all, the service sucked. When we got there, it took us seating ourselves for them to recognize us. There were only three couples so it wasn't like it was packed and they didn't see us. Finally after being seated elsewhere, we ordered hot tea. I love japanese hot tea, but their hot water tasted slimy. Yuck. We ordered tempura, which was greasy, Dragon roll (nothing special), Seafood Clay Pot, which was the most flavorless soup I've ever tasted. I had to add soy sauce to it. My hubby wanted to rate it -1 star, but I told him he had to rate it 1-5 stars. He refused to rate it even a 1 star. I will never hear the end of it from hubby. P.S. I saw the sticker on the window that says Best of Brentwood 2006 for Sushi, but who won 2007? I'd go there instead....or I'd rather go to Bluefin Sushi or Lucy's.

very skimpy on the food. the beef tery was very little and dry. the rice in the sushi wasnt fluffy enough or they rolled it hella tight. the sushi rice was not flavorful. went here twice, still the same. Ive been to dozens of sushi rest in s.f and the east bay. seems like folks from brentwood, antioch, pittsburg, oakley and disco bay love this place. as for me, not my thang... but dont let this stop u from going..

I went here with my family for my brother's birthday dinner. The service was nice, but sat us near the bathroom (which I'm not fond of when I'm eating) when there were plenty of other empty seats all over the place. Other than that, the service was quick. I asked for a suggestion on a spicy sushi, and took up on the offer. Our food came quick and the waitress frequently checked up on us to see how we were doing. I ordered the beef teriyaki. It was not the best I've had. It was very tough and chewy, very over cooked, but the rice and sushi was great. At first, the chef made the wrong sushi and I asked the waitress what it was, but the chef personally came up to me and told me he was sorry for the mistake and that we could keep the sushi on the house. When my spicy sushi sushi came, it was very delicious. The owner came and apologized for the mishap. This restaurant has a nice Japanese atmosphere, nice waiters, and their sushi is very fresh and delicious. I would not recommend any of the teriyaki though. I will definitely be coming back here again for the sushi.
