Dustin is amazing! He has curly hair himself and appreciates the special requirements of curly hair. I have dense, fine to medium, Botticelli-esque curls that I have been growing out from a hair purging three and a half years ago. I am very sensitive about losing my length as it has taken considerable time to grow my hair back. A stylist cut my hair recently who did not know what to do with my layers and curls. She seemed to be following a grid which left it in a hanging/jellyfish type shape (and uneven). Dustin worked magic on my curls. I haven't had this much life and bounce in my hair in a long time, and my length is preserved. We even cut curly bangs, which is not as simple as it sounds. Straight bangs can be laid down and cut in place. Curls are like unruly children who do as they please no matter how you discipline them. The end result is bouncy, fun and fabulous. If I could give Dustin ten stars I would.

The vibe of the salon is chill and relaxed. Convenient right off of the N Line. I will be going back.

I've been going to Mane Attraction for almost a year. Marvin does an amazing job of cutting and coloring my hair. I wish I could continue going there but I cannot...

On my first visit I was charges $120 for a cut and color. (Before I came in I was told it would be $110 - $55 for cut, $55 for color)

On my second visit I was charged $130 for the same cut and color.

On my third visit I was charged $140 for the same cut and color.

And my last time I was charged a whopping $150 for the EXACT same cut and color.

It's unfortunate that they couldn't stay true to the pricing I got quoted when I called in the first time and are greedy. It makes me feel stupid to be taken advantage of. So I'm taking my money somewhere else.

Wanted to give a further update. Really FANTASTIC CUSTOMER SERVICE.

I was unhappy with one of my recent haircuts -- not the hairstylist's fault, it was just that I wanted more layers but didn't specify. So I went back 3 weeks later and told them I wasn't completely happy with it, and the manager took an hour out of his day to recut/style my hair and did not charge me a thing even when I tried to pay him. Speaks to how much they care about returning customers and making sure they are satisfied. Not to mention it was also a beautiful cut!  I will definitely be back again and will ask for the manager because he was really good at what he does -- has been styling hair for years!

Best haircut of my life from Kate! I have gone back several times and she always gives me exactly what I didn't even know I wanted. She was able to look at several different pictures, talk to me for a bit, and sculpted a haircut that fit my face shape and personal style perfectly. Kate gave me a super short pixie-type of cut that another stylist refused to do (possibly from fear of her own skill level???) I am so glad I made a leap of faith and decided to try a different salon. I get compliments on my hair almost daily. I think because it is a cut that I haven't seen on anyone else in the city. Seems impossible, right? But it's honestly the truth!!

It is HARD to find a decent hair stylist in the city... one you can trust. I received my first hair cut from Man Attraction about a week ago... and I am blown away! It is a charming place located in the heart of Cole Valley with the friendliest staff in the city... They know how to do hair and they know how to do hair WELL!!!

My hair cut was done by the owner Grant, and wow does he know to cut hair! He has been cutting hair for over 20 years and has such a pleasant and friendly charm about him. We chatted about our love for music. I was more than pleased with the hair cut I received.. He thinned my thick hair and put in layers that frame my face perfectly. I am trying to grow out my hair and gave me tips and how to do so.

The have a WONDERFUL collection of Bumble and Bumble products and are all extremely knowledgeable on them.

If you are looking for a high quality hair cut you can trust by people who are passionate and love what their doing.... MANE ATTRACTION is the place!!!

They are also featured on http://ColeValleySF.com if you want to read up more on them :)

I've been getting my hair cut by Willie for thirty-five years and I won't go to anyone else.  I met him when he worked at a different salon and followed him to the Mane Attraction.  He is one of the most creative individuals I've ever seen with a pair of sheers.  He possesses many different techniques for cutting and styling your hair.  Things you'll be hard pressed to find elsewhere.  Give him one shot and I'll guarantee you'll be a satisfied customer.  He sizes up your head like a canvas before working his magic.  He's like the Michael Jordan of stylists.  Thank you Willie for many great cuts and I look forward to many more.

Stopped crying long enough to write this... I went in today with long hair, left with short hair = NOT what I wanted at all.

I told Marvin I wanted the ends and layers cleaned up, that I had always had long hair, that I liked the long wavey look etc and he proceeded to cut off like 4 inches of my hair, it's barely longer than shoulder length now. Sure it's healthier, but I hate how I look now.   It will take over a year to grow back I am so, so sad.  I held it together until I left and cried the whole way home.

I've tried a lot of places for haircuts (from ridiculous places on union square to cheapy dives in the mission to my aunt) and Brook at Mane Attraction is the best by far. Always understands exactly what I am looking for. From long modelly mess to crisp a line cut, he knows what he's doing!

The only drawback is that I now live on the east coast!

I "heart" Nancy. Plain and simple. Since moving back to SF, I've been looking for someone to be my stylist and it's been a struggle. I first found someone in San Jose that was awesome, but couldn't justify me driving down there when I needed a free bang trim. Then I was going somewhere over in Russian Hill and although it was great, she didn't listen and would always try to sell me stuff. So I didn't want to go there anymore b/c I felt like I was paying for more things I didn't need.

So on a necessary whim, I tried my local hair salon. I got Nancy by chance and she was AWESOME. knew exactly what I wanted. Made me look my best and really understood my hair. Unlike other Asian girls, I have weird wavy, sometimes straight when it wants to be hair and Nancy knew exactly how to work with it. She was pleasant without being too chatty and was comfortable to talk to.  And she does free bang trims and will be so much easier for me to go and get those. They're always stocked with Bumble and Bumble products (my fave) and the salon is not pretentious. Overall a great place to go.

I'm shocked I haven't written a review for Mane Attraction yet. Brook has been doing my hair for years.  Just like Amy B, I constantly change my hair color and cut.  I've had platinum, brown, red, pixie cut, long, bob.....and I've loved every cut and color.  Not only is Brook a color expert but he gives his honest opinion about your ideas without being judge-y.  I bring in pictures of what I like and he explains what will work with my hair type and let's me down easily if what I want is impossible (like going from dark brown to platinum in one shot, I can be impatient).

I like my hair salon to have good looking stylists and tiny dogs running around, but to find that combined with a laid back vibe and zero attitude is nearly impossible.  I've found both here at Mane Attraction.  I constantly have people stop me to ask who does my hair and take pictures of my cut.  I'm not gonna lie, it feels good!

Sorry folks, I must sadly disagree.  Having recently moved to SF, I thoroughly researched hair salons on yelp and this seemed like the place.  To make it brief:

    1. I'm cool with the "eccentric stylist guy" culture, though I thought it was kind of rude that the resident sweater-clad terrier was interviewed and asked more questions about his fur preferences than I was during my haircut.
    2.  I asked for the haircut I had, just an inch shorter.  My husband didn't recognize me.
    3.  When I returned to pick up the necklace I left there 30 minutes prior, the guy who did my hair did not recognize me either.

    Their egos need a trim.

My friend Ziggy, who lives upstairs, loves getting his hair cut.  Loves.  It.  It's a weird indulgence for a 13-year-old.  He goes about every six or eight weeks, which is far too infrequently, frankly, but every time he comes out you'd think it was his birthday and Christmas all at once.  He struts.  He preens.  He swaggers.  Ziggy is a standard poodle, though, which makes the whole thing hysterically funny.

Today, Ziggy and I both got our respective hairs cut on the same day.  He went to his groomers (which smells like rotten dog poo) and I went to Mane Attraction.   Here, in the afterward, we are both strutting.  I'm strutting right now as I type this.  It's kind of a sight to see....

Some of the other reviews on here are hit-and-miss, so I'll stick to what I know and try not to over generalize.  Nancy cut my hair, I sat in the front chair near the door, and the whole thing was a great experience.  Nancy was chatty (but not TOO chatty), friendly (but not OVERLY friendly) and efficient (but not sloppy and careless).  She was great.

My hair?  Well, I've recently been leaving it's care to lesser barbers (rhymes with Mooper Mutts) as the resident follicles of my widow's peak have begun to abandon ship.  I felt that if they were leaving me, I wasn't going to spend a lot of money trying to improve what was left.  Today, though, I stayed home from work to get some work done (yes, I have THAT kind of job) and thought I'd give the lovely place near my train stop a chance to dazzle me.

And dazzle they did.  For $55, you can't beat it:  The place is clean, they use good products (bumble & bumble) and the staff is friendly.  Nancy worked her magic and I think I'm hooked.  I may never go back to "Mooper Mutts" again.

In hindsight, I probably should have been pampering my remaining loyal hair follicles more gingerly.  From now on, I'll let the good people at Mane Attraction take care of them.

Whatever you do, don't go to Marvin.  I walked out of the salon almost in tears.  The cut wasn't too bad -- boring but not bad.  I usually consider myself to have stylish shorts cuts, and this one looked like something you get from a first year stylist.

But it's the color that's really the issue.  I told him that I wanted to go a lighter brown and I already had color in my hair.  Even I know that you can't just put lighter colors on hair that already has a darker color in it...so needless to say my roots came out light brown and the rest of my hair a sharp jet black.  NOT the look I'm going for!  The worst part was that he actually continued to try and style my hair as if I wouldn't notice it. I had to ask him to fix it and then he said he didn't understand why that happened.  The minute I called another salon and told them what happened, they knew exactly why.  It's horrible and now I have to spend money in another salon on Thursday to have both fixed -- NOT WORTH A PENNY!!

This in NOT what happened when Huy cut my hair. Huy was super friendly, gave me a great clean cut, added educated suggestions about what I should do with my hair, and made my bi-annual haircut RELAXING. Plus, they got me in last minute on a Saturday.

This is how a typical conversation goes  when I get my haircut.

Stylist: "How often do you cut your hair?"
    Me: "About twice a year"
Stylist:(head shaking, no response) "Have you ever straightened your hair?"
Me: "Once when it was wet, and I know now that I wasn't supposed to do  that."
    Stylist:(head shaking, no response)

100% shame free. Heart for Huy

I love getting my hair done here because Huy makes me feel special. Now I understand Jessica's special relationship with Ken.

Yeah, I want a bob like every other girl out there.

Yeah, I'm his fourth bob of the day.

But ya know, hair is hair. And he makes me feel like the only girl out there with an asymmetrical a-line.

I like my hair salon to be laid back, clean, and friendly with more of a neighborhood-y feel. I like my stylist to be unpretentious, not too chatty, and I want them to listen to what I want and know exactly what their doing, and I don't want them to charge me an insane amount for a simple cut - is that so much to ask for?? I don't want to walk out of the salon debating whether or not I actually like the cut/style/color or start plotting my next move in my hair adventures. I want to walk out feeling like I got exactly what I wanted and loving my hair.

That being said, I'd been on what seemed like a never-ending search for a stylist that fits the above description. I had been going to the same place in the South Bay for years because I was getting exactly what I wanted, but I haven't actually lived in the South Bay for years now, and the drive was getting to me, so I've been searching for someone that would be just as good to my locks. I searched high and low, but all I got were stylists that wanted to know everything about my personal life (but didn't actually seem to care), that would charge wayyy too much for a mediocre cut, or I'd be going to some fancy-shmancy salon where I felt like I was paying extra for the decor. (Can you sense my frustration?)

But today was different, and my search is over, because I went to go see Beth at Mane Attraction. She was great. Heard me out and did exactly what I wanted. She was cool and friendly, and I didn't feel like I needed to make small-talk and I was left alone to read my book (although we chatted a bit about the book I was reading). I have long, layered hair, with a ton of wave- hard to get the cut just right because of all the body, but Beth did a fantastic job. I also had a toner put in- she got the color exactly right. For all that, it was $120, which is less than I've paid in a long time. She also does free bang trims for her clients. The salon is clean and not stuffy, right in the heart of Cole Valley. I am definitely coming back to see Beth again, and I'm relieved to have found a stylist that was review-worthy!

They recently raised their prices, but even at $50 a pop it is well worth the price.

I have to plug Yorque for the absolutely amazing cut he gives me EVERY SINGLE TIME!  He's honestly the best stylist I've gone to in my many years of going to hair salons.  I have very curly hair, which is even more difficult to cut for the shear reason that I'm a dude.

Curly hair + dude = impossible.

Anyway, Yorque did exactly what I wanted, it grew in exactly the way I wanted, and I went back for another go a few months later and he replicated the impossible!  Magnificent!  On top of everything Yorque is a great conversationalist, has great tips, and gives a killer head massage while your getting your hair washed.  I joked about flying him down to Atlanta to cut my hair... and I was half serious.  Book in advance, he fills up quickly because he only cuts on Monday and Thursdays.

WILLIE IS A HAIR GOD! I've been going to him for the past 2 and a half years, and I never let anyone else touch my hair, even though I live in NYC for most of the year. I refuse to let him go! My boyfriend and his family have been going to Mane Attraction since forever, and I'm so glad they introduced me. (Even if my boyfriend and I break up, I'm totally still going to Willie...that's true love right there.) Willie is super friendly, energetic, sassy, and most importantly, really knows what he's doing. I usually give just him a general idea of what I want, and he takes care of the rest. But he's also very open to my suggestions. I always end up with a great haircut. Thanks, Willie!

Beth was very good at helping me choose my color, and it didnt turn out too dark. Another star for using Wella, my favorite hair color system ever!!

Those of us with curly hair know that it is difficult to find a stylist in SF who can style our ringlets properly - without turning hair into a pyramid shape or unruly bush.  Leslie has naturally curly hair herself and knows exactly how to style it.   She is always friendly, has a great sense of humor, and knows how to make suggestions without being pushy.  She tames my Jewfro, and I love her for it.

My boyfriend gets his hair cut by Marvin, who does an amazing job every time.

Marvin is fantastic.  He's cut my hair for nearly a year and has nailed it every time.  I can definitively say, with no hesitation, that he can cut Asian hair (and all you fellow Asians, especially guys, know exactly what I'm talking about).  He can cut it long or short, knows how to use the straight edge and razor, and works fast.

Mane Attraction is right in front of the Cole Valley Muni stop, which makes it super convenient.  They don't accept credit cards, but if you forget your cash there's an ATM around the corner.

    Hello bangs, we meet again.

Nancy was such a sweetheart. I brought in a picture of the hairstyle that I wanted and she listened to me attentively. She gave me exactly what I wanted. I like that she didn't get too happy-snappy with her scissors like some hairdressers do. I know I have split ends and she did recommend me to cut off more of my hair but we came to a compromise since I like my length.

She curled my hair too which was super nice. The salon was clean and everybody there was professional. Willie or Wallie (sorry) was super friendly and he kept talking about the places and spots he had hit in Vegas. He even knew who the Runnin' Rebels were! That's a plus.

I like my haircut and it's not too different from salon blown dry and what I have to work with at home. Thanks Nancy :)

The hair cut was $55 and that's okay with me cause my hair's long but I'll understand the grunts if you had short hair and had to pay that amount too.

Overall it was a good experience. They have good reads too.

I've had many a hair catastrophe, particularly because I'm a very picky grrrl. However, when I went into Mane Attraction for the first time, I met Huy, my hair god. A proper business woman-type left his chair right before me, hair bobbed and slicked perfectly. This wasn't my style at all, but once Huy got to work, this dyke walked out with an edgy cut and a massive smile. Not only does he exercise versatility, but professionalism, kindness, and a bad-ass knowledge of coloring.

HIGHLY recommended - friendly staff, casual atmosphere, easy to get to, extreme know-how.

I came here for my haircut back in November '05 because it was recommended by my coworker.  Unfortunately, I didn't get the stylist she recommended, but I got the new guy.  It took a little over an hour to get my hair and bangs trimmed, primarily because my stylist was doing double duty as the receptionist as well... so he kept answering the phone and was on the cellphone with his NEXT client.  In fairness, my haircut was good, but nothing out of the extraordinary, when he finally finished.  I just wish he focused on finishing my cut before entertaining his next client, who wasn't even there yet.
I still give this place 4 stars because my coworker's haircut always looks great whenever she gets it from Leslie.

And for the first time, I was pleased with the way he styled my hair after. I am planning to come back for color. Grant is friendly and the price is very affordable!

Got my hair cut, never having previously gone here.  Leslie did a very nice job.  She didn't push me to cut off a ton of length and get something uber trendy--which I appreciate.  She also cut and then asked me if I wanted any more taken off/shorter layers/etc. before actually doing it.  I definitely appreciate that.  She is good with both scissors and razor and gave me great long layers that add more body and volume without looking super uniform.  As Leslie aptly put it:  now you have a haircut.

Only down sides are that they don't take cards.  Haircuts aren't too badly priced, but it'll mean making a trip to the bank if I ever want highlights/etc.

Beth was very attentive, nice, and most importantly a good listener. Gave me the exact cut I invisioned. At the end, she loaded me up with samples of Bumble and Bumble. The salon is clean and professional without being snooty. It's a very inviting atmosphere. PLUS they have customer appreciation parties with music and wine!

I'd give Five Stars if it wasn't a flat rate for all haircuts ($55).

I was in SF for the day and desperately wanted to change my decent but boring recent cut. Willie was able to fit me in and the results are amazing.

He was very considerate and professional: he got to know me and what I wanted. But most of all, he is incredibly talented. My layers are perfect, my curls are showing, and I'm constantly getting compliments on my hair.

The salon is also in a great neighborhood (a cheese shop, crêperie, and wine bar are nearby), and the salon's vibe is perfect (plus they have a cute dog running around). The price was also great - $55.

I just have to write a review about my experience here. It was AWESOME. I have really fine hair, which makes it hard for the choppy layers I love to show up. After years of going to different stylists and never being 100% happy with the layers in my hair, I went here and somehow Yorke did it. I finally have the hip choppy hair I've always wanted.
Yorke was really considerate, and very good about communicating with me which I appreciated. He had a lot of enthusiasm and it is so refreshing to see someone be that enthusiastic about their career.
My haircut at Mane Attraction made me feel so good about myself. I'm definitely a regular customer here now.
Something to know before you go though: They do only take cash, so be sure to stop by the ATM before you go!

Lesley is a genius!  I would never let anyone else touch my hair in a million years.  I always get the greatest cuts and color at a very affordable price.  And she works on Saturdays and Sundays.  Run to Mane Attraction and make an appointment with Lesley.  You will not regret it!

I have found a salon I believe, wholeheartedly I'll be sticking with!  Willie is the MAN!  I went in there after some time had lapsed and a visit to another salon in the Sunset (my home) where I received a terrible haircut at the same price!  He did wonders!!!  He gave me a new style, which I wanted, and as I have fine hair and he specializes in, I lucked out!  Willie even styled my hair afterward!  He has 20+ years experience and is a friendly, down to earth lad.  I agree with all the other reviewers that this salon is a friendly, down to earth place with the upscale feel!  LOVE THIS PLACE!!!  I know they are apparently increasing their prices come April :-( but I think I'm still going to go back...hopefully it's not past $60!  It's pushing it for just a haircut.  But regardless, I recommend this salon!!!!

I received a happily unexpected email from the owner saying that upselling is not something they tolerate in the salon and offered for me to come in to get worked on by him personally. He didnt ask me to change the review in exchange, he simply wanted to make things right. That earns Mane Attraction not only the star I took away for the icky feeling of getting a last minute price hike, but an additional star for customer service!

Their products are great, the prices are good and aside from that hiccup, I was happy with the service and the stylists were friendly.

Okay. 5 years ago. So I fought my hair my entire life. It's curly, wavy, straight-ish... It's basically completely schizophrenic and would not adhere to any hairstyle I've tried to coerce it into. My friends advised me... well, they actually kinda ordered me... to visit Brooke. I have never looked back. Brooke was able to educate me on how my hair works, and showed me how to use a hair dryer. Oh, and product. Yes, now my hair does what it has always been meant to do, and looks just awesome. It fits my personality perfectly. You owe it to yourself to give these guys a try.

Brooke is the man! He's my main man hair stylist of godliness. The ace boom of great haircuts. That's right, I took it back all late-80's style.

When you walk in the place, you immediately know you're not paying up the wazoo to to subsidize the stylists' coke habits and leather pants.

Solid haircuts and color,  great attention to detail and not overly chatty or gum chewy. Brooke's dog, Stanford, is a nice addition to the backroom - he's not yippy or annoying, just playful and cute.

The music they play is always great and heavy on the old skool R&B - they just started subscribing to satellite radio, so the choices are endless!

Overall, much love for Mr. Brooke and Mane attraction.

LaReina is the solution to my short hair issues, and I have settled on her as my hair cutter of choice.  Marvin would be for me if I were hipper.  I know too many people who get their hair cut by Huy for that not to be incestious, but I will say that those people really stand by Huy.

UPDATED:  LeReina is long gone, in Spain.

I got my hair cut here just minutes ago by Grant, and I am SO pleased with the result!

I was burned the last time I got a cut, and grew my hair out for over a year.  Grant took note of my desires and my hair's natural tendencies to create a beautiful, natural look.  It's exactly what I wanted, and I didn't even explain it very well!  $60 for a cut this fabulous is a STEAL!  A salon that respects your sense of style without pushing the trendiest new look on you is priceless.

Oh, and I was late due to forgetting my purse at home.  They were really nice about it, even though it set us back about 20 minutes.  The whole atmosphere is welcoming, friendly, and laid back.

I will definitely be a repeat customer here!
