Every moment, every detail, absolutely amazing.
Summer was coming to close here in Boston and my girlfriend and I weren't ready to put away our swimwear. After spending countless hours comparing hotels on every island in the Caribbean, I realized that there were no guarantees for sunshine, most hotels involved compromises and with only a week off I wanted to maximize my leisure and relaxation--not spend the entire first and last days of our time off traveling.
After reading many mixed hotel reviews and upcoming weather reports for the region and I was frustrated. Then I remembered my stay at the Mandarin Oriental, New York--where the accommodations, service and general atmosphere provided a sense of tranquility even amongst the hectic backdrop of the city. I had been to their properties in Boston and Riviera Maya, Mexico as well--there is a consistent feeling when you enter a Mandarin--it is calming, sophisticated and luxurious. Neither of us had been on vacation in quite some time and so I wanted perfection and at the Mandarin Oriental, Miami I got it.
From the moment we stepped out of our taxi, everything was absolute bliss. The charming staff treated us like royalty, they learned our names, and made themselves available at any moment--with a sincere smile. The lobby has fantastic views and smelled incredible--I was told it was some jasmine incense, I don't usually like incense, but this was instantly relaxing and therapeutic. We had arrived approximately an hour before check-in which was not a problem as they upgraded us to an available room for free. After being brought some delicious peach tea blend, we were shown our room.
Our room was stunning. Quality furnishings, very comfortable bedding; it also had a unique layout where the bathroom opens up to the rest of the space--yes, the water closet is still separate. The vibe was very romantic--relaxing and exciting. The huge flat screen television and ipod/iphone dock with a Denon sound system were nice bonuses. We used that iPod dock nearly the entire time, but when we didn't, the hotel was dead quiet--as if we were the only ones there. The view from the 18th floor was surreal--the entire downtown Miami skyline.
While I had planned several day trips and nights/dinners out, we quickly realized that we were already in paradise--why bother? We spent our 5 days and 4 nights almost exclusively at the hotel. By day, we split time between the infinity pool and the hotel's private beach along the bay. While this is not a swimming beach--it was like stepping into another world--laying out on daybeds over white sand in the middle of a gorgeous city skyline. The staff, as always was very attentive to us. When my girlfriend would mention to me she was thirsty, seemingly out of thin air was a staff member with ice water. When I would start to sweat, someone was there with a eucalyptus-scented cold washcloth. The drinks were a little too sweet for my taste, so I asked them to make them a little bit stronger--from then on we never had to ask again.
At night we would sit out above the pool area in the chic M-Bar; watching the distant thunderstorms, listening to the sounds of the rolling palm trees, enjoying the warm Miami breeze, sipping from one of the hundreds of cocktail offerings. The server at M-bar found out I had been to their Riviera Maya property and had a special drink he concocted for that menu. Ask for the Riviera Maya!
We utilized room service every night to some degree. Yes, it is expensive--but not unreasonable. We were delighted by our meals, the presentation and the friendly staff. The hotel is a bit secluded--so late at night room service is the only option unless you want to walk about 15 minutes. I believe all the food is served from Cafe Sambal (one of the two restaurants on-site). The Pad Thai is incredible (best i've had), and we couldn't get enough of their Sushi. The Sushi is perhaps the best 'value' on the entire menu--fresh, flavorful and delightfully presented.
I would recommend you spend at least one day at South Beach. The water, the sun and the people are beautiful. The concierge gave us directions for a great drop-off location close to the best shopping and dining in the area.
We spent our final night at the hotel's signature restaurant, Azul, which I have written a separate review for. You cannot stay at the Mandarin Oriental, Miami without spending a night dining at this restaurant!
I could not have asked for a better vacation. I realize that this review lacks much negative criticism--but it is simply a difficult resort/hotel to find fault with. Yes, all this luxury, pampering and decadence, comes with a hefty price--but remains an excellent value. We sacrificed a couple nights stay somewhere else to afford what we had at the Mandarin Oriental, Miami--but we would not trade that experience for anything in the world. Thank you Mandarin Oriental, Miami--it was an experience of a lifetime.
This place is expensive -- very expensive. But, you do get a lot for your buck. My wife and I spent an evening here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. If you like being pampered and almost spoon-fed your dinner, than this is the place. It is probably the best "special ocassion" restaurant in Miami.
Food: Excellent
Service: Outrageously Excellent
Venue: Nice view, but not fall-out-of-your-seat nice
Overall Experience: Worth it
If you want to be treated like a princess, have your fabulous friends bring you here for your birthday. That's what I did.
When you walk into the lobby, the smell of gorgeous incense envelopes you and all the weariness of travel begins to slip away. An offer of iced tea while the business of check-in happens further soothes the nerves. And bellhops and concierges galore to take care of your every need - just like what a princess would want.
And the room itself was fantastic - bay view with a full bath, closet space and unlimited access to everyone in the hotel at all hours (a function we did test). They sent us little notes to let us know when a reservation was confirmed or an ammenity adjusted for our pleasure. They took care of us.
The icing on the cake was in fact a cake...a birthday cake that they sent up to the room because they found out that it was my birthday (well, my birthday was over a week ago, but we didn't have to tell them that). It was a simple gesture that sealed my appreciation for this hotel.
This place is definitely a contender for when I come back to Miami - it's not just a place to rest your head, it's an experience.
This is the hotel to be at if you enjoy privacy and a great spa.
This place is FABULOUS!!
When you business partner tells you, you're going to Miami for a couple of days, he didn't say it's like dying and going to the heavens of your choice.
The view was more than any GODDESS can ask for! The bed was the best part, the sheets had to have been made by some type of mythical angel that wove the finest cotton.
The bathroom was pretty big, but than again I don't need much space.
Even though the trip was more business than pleasure, knowing that after that meeting there would be a queen size bed and a huge bathtub waiting was good enough to get through the day.
I don't want to leave but I will definitely come back for New Years.
I was at work yesterday when I got a text message from my friend, who was flying in that evening from South America. She asked if I could get tomorrow off work. I said I'd have to check, and asked why. She replied that she wanted to invite me to stay the night at the Mandarin Oriental in Miami. Well, that was an offer I just couldn't refuse :)
The beauty of this hotel is how understated it is. It's not over the top and glittery like the hotels in Vegas. That's not to say it isn't gorgeous - it is. But instead of trying to be overly "showy" and opulent-looking, it focuses more on quality of service, and an overall feeling of peace and tranquility that you get when you step into the lobby.
The rooms are beautiful and spacious, with a view that's to die for. Our view was of the Rickenbacker Causeway and the skyline of downtown Miami. I immediately took a picture with my blackberry and sent it to my mom to brag. The room itself has a large LCD TV (I'm estimating it to be about 40"). The bathroom is big, with a roomy tub (sadly, no jacuzzi jets... I was ever-so-slightly bummed about that) and separate glass-enclosed shower. The beds are a bit more firm than expected, but I slept very well. They come with plenty of pillows, which made me happy (I need three).
In the morning, we ordered room service for breakfast. Like everything else here, it was very pricey ($20 for each of us... mine included yogurt, fruit salad, a muffin, grapefruit or orange juice, and coffee, tea or milk), but excellent quality. Everything was very fresh and delicious.
Their infinity pool is beautiful, but also smaller than I expected for such a large hotel. The service by the pool was fantastic - they brought out two towels for you - one especially fitted on top of the chair, and another draped over the back for you. They also brought out ice water for everyone, which was a nice, welcome touch. There is a beach area for those who'd prefer to lay by the water instead of the pool.
I wish I could have stayed longer here, but it was a wonderful, relaxing mini-vacation in the middle of my work week :)
A monument to quality, the Mandarin Oriental on Brickell Key is simply the best hotel in Miami.
The lobby is stunning. A soaring ceiling, views of Biscayne Bay, elegant materials used everywhere - all with a vaguely Asian feel that inspires the soul.
Service is immediately recognized as professional. Polite, reassuring, quietly cheerful.
The rooms are impeccable. Sleek yet warm. Be sure to get a room facing the bay allowing you the pleasure of standing on your little terrace transfixed at the beauty of the water and city skyline.
The bathrooms are so delightful and big you'd be happy to stay there for a week.
Any food served...in your room...at the pool...or in the two outstanding restaurants (5 star Azul or the more relaxed Cafe Sambal)...will top the dinning experiences of most restaurants in the world.
Remember to reserve some time at the fantastic spa to treat yourself to world-class experts in massage, facials and whatever else you'd like to pamper yourself with.
The scenic pool and "beach" area offer a lovely place to relax. More attentive service is there for that smoothie, a drink or some munchies when you feel like it.
The Mandarin Oriental makes all the competition, both in Miami or Miami Beach, look like amateurs. It may be slightly off the beaten track but that only adds to its allure. Staying here, you feel above it all.
And yes, you will pay dearly for your stay - but you only have one life to live. Might as well do it right.
Paradise on Earth.
This is officially my favorite hotel in the world. The location is stunning-- I plan on moving to Brickell Key. The food in Azul and Cafe Sambal are excellent! The service is outstanding!!!
The synthetic beach is sooo relaxing...picture laying on a white mattress on a pristine white sand beach and palm trees waving in the light breeze...right next to the ocean.
Ahhh...
The first time I came to the Mandarin was for my graduation lunch (thanks, guys!) a few years ago. I've never stayed as a guest, but have been privvy to their ever delicious menu which, for lunch, includes rare and interesting sashimi and some great salads, and a decent beer selection, and for breakfast boasts some incredible dishes with one of the most extensive and tasteful menus (my eggwhite, asparagus, portobello, and cheese omelette was LOVERLY). I also enjoy that they serve loose-leaf tea in french presses and offer up two kinds of fruit juices.
This place is especially great if you have a boat -- dock right next to the restaurant and stop by for a meal!
just got back home after spending the weekend at The Mandarin. The hotel is gorgeous, the staff exceptional and the amenities quite nice.
we were upgraded to a bigger room, which was great. The room we had was just about all you could ask for - large wrap-around deck with beautiful city and water views, suuuuuuper comfortable bed, nice bathroom and ample living space - especially considering it was gorgeous out and why in our right minds would we want to stay in the room all day? All niceties aside, our room was a tad loud - as it overlooked the bridgeway on to brickell island, also - there was only 1 sink and the tub was tiiiiiiiiiiiny tiny tiny. but, i must say, those three items were miniscule inconveniences that i really didn't think about until sitting down to write this review.
Of particular note at this hotel is the outstanding service. Every door opened, every lounge chair perfectly set up - smiles in the mornings and all without feeling stuffy or pretentious.
we spent most of our time at the hotel lounging at their cute little beach on the chaise-bed things. simply gorgeous. quiet, again exceptional service, comfortable and we even got a visit from a manatee!
all in all, my stay at the mandarin was fabulous and i recommend it to anyone in the miami area, especially if you have business downtown or simply if your OK with paying 40$ for a cab to take you to miami beach...as it is a titch out of the way.
oh and ps - they serve up a mean blackberry mojito
Kudos to the Manager for being such a classy person... we enjoy their Azul restaurant quite a lot, it is simply a 5 star restaurant. This place is definitely a great place to come and enjoy a few drinks with friends...
Back to the manager, we had a pretty lengthy meeting here and it was of course accompanied by a good number of excellent drinks...When it came time to leave, we were a bit impaired to say the least.
We asked to see the manager and asked if given our current condition and the how late it was in the evening, if we could stay in the hotel for a discounted rate.
After a bit of negotiation, this gentleman realized that the potential of letting us stay for the night was a greater opportunity than letting us go in this condition, we were taking a cab. Nevertheless, because we have the potential of sharing these experiences with so many people...case in point this review on YELP, plus all the potential customers we meet regularly that are looking for a good hotel or even a good restaurant or bar.
It was also way past midnight and there was clearly plenty of availability in the hotel so it was a matter of letting us stay for a very reasonable rate for the night in a room that was going to remain idle... it was a weekday so we assured an early departure as well.
Thus, me and my lovely wife enjoyed a magical evening at the Mandarin Oriental, we had had dinner and drinks and we even got to stay -
This place is wonderful, always top notch professional service with a smile -
We have been to their spa as well on separate occasions and we are always delighted with the service.
Great Location, Great Service, Great Place, Great Staff, it will cost you but it is well worth it.
I couldn't quite figure out why my company splurged so much and sent us here but all I can say is that my jaw dropped the moment I walked in the lobby. It was simply gorgeous, and the reception staff took care of us in no time. The room I had was phenomenal: a very comfortable bed, spacious, bright, and a great TV and more than enough space for me to get work done on this desk I loved so much I could have taken it home. So, I'm not sure if this means my room was an oasis, or an office. I would of course stay here again if someone was putting me up at this place. I tried hard to find a flaw to write about but I couldn't find one.
WHAT CAN I SAY...best service, great place to stay,.i just love miami!
Love most Mandarin Oriental hotels, although the Miami one slightly misses the mark. Yes, it is comfortable and reasonably well run. But it is in dire need of a face lift. Both the lobby and rooms feel dated (in the latter case, it is not just the design that is dated, but there are nicks on the furniture, the carpet is not flawless, etc). The service overall is pleasant, although, as in every Miami hotel I have ever stayed in, housekeeping is woefully inadequate. There are deals to be had and at a fairly low price, it is worth it, but do not pay top dollar for your stay, at least until it has been appropriately refurbished. Both restaurants are very good.
I LOVE CALI, but this place makes me want to take a trip here every weekend... LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Aint much more to say but get your
BUUUTAYS here when you can.
Stayed here for 3 nights for a work event (yeah, my life sucks, no really, it really sucks sometimes)...it is indeed every bit as luxurious and attentive to your every whim & need as you might imagine. Gave me a proper complex about being waited on, hand & foot.
However, I will say that the beds at the Ritz Carlton and even the Vincci are a bit more comfy to sleep in. The Spa, however, at the Mandarin is unparalleled. Book yourself a treatment. You'll never want to leave.
Oh a funny aside--these guys give away Evian water bottles like it's chump change. You check in at the front desk--they give you a water bottle. Each treadmill and bicycle at the gym comes with a complimentary bottle. Each locker in the Spa also comes with a bottle. I am seriously worried about the amount of recyling that goes on here. Envisioning mountains of discarded Evian bottles piled up in some dark cave underneath the hotel....
I have always had good lunches and dinners at the restaurants at the Mandarin. But never a meal that blew me away, which I would expect for the price. I had a wonderful birthday lunch there once and the service is excellent. If you haven't been it is worth the splurge.
Spent the day at the spa and it was worth every penny! The treatments were incredible and the staff was extremely nice. We had a few issues with our credit cards when were charged extra but the problem was resolved.
Perfection.
There isn't much to not like about the Mandarin. It is a true five star, not a four star posing as a five star, but a five (going on six) star hotel. Gorgeous oriental Asian themed grounds (everything is modern, don't expect old world anything), gorgeous lobby, lovely rooms. Very attentive staff focused on details and the experience of guests. Classy catering management, I enjoy working with the folks at this hotel when I shoot weddings there. True to the Mandarin Oriental ads, celebrities are not uncommon at this luxury hotel.
Stayed here for 5 nights and was extremely impressed with their service. All the staffs were very attentive to your needs and are very eager to give you a hand. Went out for a walk in the pool, sat down, in less than 1 minute the waitress came by and offered me some ice water, my butt barely touched the seat. Very very impressed.
Stayed here for two nights, last year, and by far my fav hotel in Florida. Comes close to others. Room was just a dream. Clean looking and makes you feel relaxed and refreshed. Complete serenity. Service is outstanding. The pool area and beach club make you feel like you're on an island. It's basically the perfect getaway.
No words to describe the luxury of the property...
