Great diner food, good value especially for the West Village.  We had a normal dinner as opposed to normal diner food and it was quite good.

The absolute worst.   Ordered through seamless with a quote for delivery between 10 to 20 minutes.  An hour and a half later, with a call to the restaurant assuring me the order was on its way, and a no show.  Do yourself a favor and take your business elsewhere.

Manaus has always been overpriced with crappy food, but lately it seems as if it's gotten worse! Sadly, like most places over time I think the owners just do not care anymore. Not everyone in the West Village are millionaires-remember that! Service was awful as well. Never again!

Before I arrived in NYC, my brother and his bf already had Manatus Restaurant picked out as the West Village Sunday brunch choice to take me to.  Manatus is their go to 24-hour joint for many a post-bar/post-party night meal.  Originally when we walked in I thought this was Greek joint - lotsa white interior with I think I remember columns, mid-age to older non-hipsterish clientele at tables and booths enjoying their Sunday brunch.

I forgot what everyone else ordered bc my eyes zeroed in on their brunch special - order from a specific brunch menu and you get a mimosa or a choice of a specialty drink with your meal.  I had to order the challah french toast since I'd never had challah bread before and it was deliciously dense as it appeared on tv.  Very simple presentation of large challah french toast slices with the slightly spongy yellow middle and that rich dark brown rind -  a good carb sweet start to my day.  Our server was a little difficult to understand as he spoke rather quickly but he was attentive to us and overall not a bad brunch experience.

This is not the praying Mantis of martial art form, but a diner not a true restaurant as the name claims. Two well known past loyal patrons were Broadway's Bebe Neuwirthe who often dined at Manatus in 2004 through 2005 and comedian Rumplemeyer.

With a friend on a Friday late afternoon of a crisp October we dined to two entrees of crab cakes and macaroni cheese. Quality of food was very mediocre. The crab cakes were served plain without tartar sauce or condiments and macaroni cheese were very dry as it were yesterday's leftovers. Service is somewhat attentive. Menu is in a true diner format amid outside has the believable lie look of a restaurant. Blah is all I can say I was unable to sustain any macaroni further for the poor quality.

Located in the heart of the West Village on Bleecker near Christopher, this is the type of nondescript cafe that somehow got stuck in the 70's, but no one seems to be complaining since the clientele looks like mostly regulars from the 'hood. In fact, I was thinking I would hear "Baby Come Back" or "All By Myself" on the Muzak. It's the kind of casual place you take for granted, not a dining destination for tourists but a diner where you get together comfortably with old friends - which is exactly the reason I was there.

Jamie W. and I met up with my now-NYC-based friend Carlos and his partner, also named Jamie, for breakfast here, and I have to be honest... I can barely remember what I had because I was just enjoying catching up. Oh yeah, now I remember. I had the $9.90 Manatus Eggs Benedict, which was basically standard-issue eggs benedict complete with a gloopy hollandaise sauce (see photo). Jamie, one of them, had the even less memorable $8.45 Ham Omelette with a side of kinda mushy home fries (see photo). That's it... that's all I got.

    FOOD - 3 stars...I don't remember getting sick...that's a good sign, right?
AMBIANCE - 2.5 stars...I think my mom had the same type of furniture in our house way back when
    SERVICE - 3 stars...serviceable
TOTAL - 3 stars...unmemorable except for the company I keep

I love egg benedicts, and one of my friends who used to live in New York suggested I try this place out. I yelped, googled, and mapquested it! Haha. Our hotel was in Queens, and from there we took the bus, train, taxi and walked all the way there!

WHERE: Located somewhere on Bleecker Street! It seriously took us 5 touristing hours to get there! Lol

WHAT: Prior to get there, I was expecting something magnificent, something worth my time and money. Don't get me wrong, the food was good, but just stayed GOOD. I've tried several benedicts, and their country style benedict tasted just like any other bennie!

To make up for what lacked in the food, the service was number one! The owners and workers were Greek, and such happy people. I would definitely come back because of the service alone!!

Pretty standard place to get brunch if you're looking for the usual brunch fair - I usually get some combination of eggs, bacon, toast, sausage, and hash browns. Sometimes I go crazy and get an omelet or waffles. Nothing extraordinary but it hits the spot when I want breakfast food. I've been here a few times and no complaints. Only thing I would say is that their food is a bit pricey, but I guess it's in the village.

I go out alot and generally end up eating at many many 24hr diners in NYC.  This has to be the worst 24hr diner in Manhattan.  That they are in the West Village is the only plus I can give it.

Tonight (this Morning) was the straw that broke the donkey's back on this place.  I'm meeting friends here after a latin party we were attending.  I arrive first, it's 2am.  The place is dead, only one other table (a couple) being served.  My friends show up 10 min later; there are four of us.  We are seated and the waters come out (good).  We order.

2:45am:  We're chatting, shooting the breeze with one another.  The couple who was there before I'd arrived start to get mad, in a loud way.  The girl gets up and goes over to the kitchen and starts to yell something about if they are waiting for the chickens' eggs to hatch eggs so they can make them etc.  They end up leaving without being served.  The manager apologizes in broken English.

3:15am:  We have not been served yet.  I start to get very annoyed.  My friend who goes there a lot and is friends with the manager goes to see what's up.  The manager tells him that they had a very large to-go order that they are still trying to finish up.  This makes me laugh out loud.

3:30am.  We finally get our food.  This is a diner, mind you, that was dead at the time; no other tables.  Had my friends not insisted we stay I would have been home sooner to write this post about how horrible this diner is.

Note to the Owners:  I don't care who called in the to-go order.  But I do care about service (I work in the night club industry so take my word for it when I tell you that service is everything if you want to survive in this business).  Be sure to train your management next time to take care of the people who are actually in the building first, not having them wait over an hour an and half because "some one" called in a large delivery.

The manager ended up taking 10% off the tab.  I tell him he should take off more (like all of it).

No tip was left (Shame too, because the waiter was cool and had nothing to do with the lack of better judgement from the non existent management.  You're better off replacing management with a chair.

Food was mediocre/bland as always (I had the hungry man breakfast).

    Great service!

Waters before completely sitting down, never asking for a refill...

_ Roast beef with potato pancake & red cabbage (Yummmy!!!! Especially for the potato pancakes!)
_ Egg Benedict (love the sauce)
    _ Crab omelet (good portion)

    All great dishes...

    Acceptable.

Nothing to rave about, but aside from being a shade too greasy and slightly overpriced, there's not that much to complain about either.

In terms of a 24 hour place, you can do far worse in NYC.  It's a bit further out of the way and three times the size of the Waverly.  The menu is reasonably extensive, but the atmosphere leaves something to be desired.

I ordered the London Broil sandwich and was pleasantly surprised, but far from blown away.  It was a tasty "diner sized" portion, a bit larger than the average NYC entree but about on par if you're used to Midwestern diner fare.

My girlfriend ordered the Belgian Waffle, and it was about as disappointing as one would expect.  I'm still searching for a waffle that is close to Veselka's and I'm afraid I'll never find it in another 24 hour place.

Friday night, and we've got time to kill before the movie. Plus we're hungry. And my friend works next door. So where to eat? Why golly gee, why not here, at Manatus?

Come on, it's a typical diner that has typical diner food. So I ordered what any typical diner patron would order on a typical Friday night: French toast with beef sausage and a tall glass of milk. Lick my legs, babies, 'cuz I'm on fire.

The service was actually very good. My friend, who is going through a vegetarian stage at the moment, asked the waiter if the stuffed mushroooms were vegetarian. He actually went to the kitchen and asked the chef himself, and came back to say that there were actually bits of bacon in the stuffed mushroom. Normally the waiter would just say yes or no, out of sheer laziness. And he did make fun of me for having French toast but he was really cool.

I'm not saying that you should go out of your way to eat here. But if you're in the area and just want to eat some comfort food, and you want to go somewhere where the greatness of Russ W. and Roderick A. was exuded, then by all means come on in.

Dry burger, bland souvlaki, awful fries that tasted like sand.  Typical bad diner, but they dressed the place up so it looked like a decent place to eat.  Sure they're open 24/7 but where they are located, you should be able to find an alternative any time.

And i could have sworn i smelled skunk.

    Skip this place.

After reading all the negative to indifferent reviews, I was a bit nervous about this place.  I decided to go ahead and order the fried fish sandwich and pray for the best.  The filet was quite large and it came with tomatoes and lettuce, pickles and tartar sauce as well as fries on the side.  Overall, I enjoyed this sandwich a lot.  The breading could have had a little more flavor but it is a diner afterall.  Sometimes when the bar is set so low, you are pleasantly surprised.

Also, there are some colorful characters at this place.  I sat near an older man with electric blue hair and a large velvety and brocade jacket that screamed Liberace.  What could be better?

It's your typically bland diner.  I feel guilty reviewing this place as a vegan, buuuuut.  There was only one item that was free from animal products and that was the veggie burger.  It was pretty good....no more lame than any other veggie burger.  I wasn't really expecting much more though.

The waitress was a little surly, but the guy who seemed to be the manager was nice and made us smile.

The decor was actually pretty nice and seemed very clean.

I went here for the first time for dinner last night as I was feeling lazy and it is on my block and it would be great to have a go to neighbourhood joint to go to if it is silly o'clock and I am craving some comfort food.

Eating here last night has left me in a bit of a quandry.
Yes, the food is good, it is a nice and clean restuarant, the service was great, the prices are a bit pricy for what it is, however although the food was great I cannot imagne ever craving it. Perhaps I had the wrong thing, but it just did not seem to me like I would ever been drawn to the place for the food.
I will go back again in the near future, maybe to try their brekkie, because I really want to love this place (although not too much I dont want to become too rotund).
So after all that, the jury is still out.

An ok dinner in the middle of the West Village. I ended up here because three other places were closed. We were seated outside promptly. I ordered the tuna salad on pita with a pickle and coleslaw. It was pretty good for diner food. I bet this place is a great place to have a late night drunken meal or hungocer breakfast. I recommend trying it then.

I went here for brunch with the hubby one Sunday. It was good. Nothing amazing, but for the price, it was just what we wanted. Very quick service, nice people. A typical 24/7 diner.

I'll probably go again, but I'm going to save it for 3am when I can't find anything else open.

So I'm taking one of  my 24-hour escapades through New York, going to to a friend's birthday party in Park Slope.  I get to the drunken end of a fantastic party, and the futon I was expecting to sleep on in is occupied by an immovable unconscious dude.  Luckily, another friend had a spare couch, so we dialed up a gypsy cab and hightailed it back to the west village.

A few fleeting, painful hours of sleep, his phone rings.  Another friend, who I hadn't seen in years, unexpectedly was free for lunch and in the neighbourhood.  between hangovers and work frustation, we decided we needed diner food, and ended up in Manatus right around the corner.

There's not too much you can really look for in a diner.  Bottomless coffee and greasy eggs are pretty much the point.  I had corned beef hash, which is exactly what I was expecting.  Hash from a can, eggs not quite over easy, and terrible home fries.  Salt, Pepper, and more than a few dashes of tabasco made it edible, and off we went.

The coffee was decent, and I never saw the bottom of my cup, but there was something a bit off about our servers.  Not rude per se, maybe brusque is the right word.   They just seemed kind of indifferent to us being there and seemed to just stand there waiting for a table to need something.

If you want a diner, its a perfectly fine place to go, but set your expectations appropriately.   Most people know what they're getting into when it comes to diners.

    It's a bad thing when:
Your wife sez: "why is this joint named after an animal?"
You, bewildered, respond: "Uhh..  I think you're thinking of a manatee"
    Your wife: "Are you sure?"
    You: "sigh...."

A diner serving a population of mainly senior citizens (from what I saw) bland bland food (from what I ate).  Sure, I guess I could imagine this place would be handy for the munchies after a night of alcohol binging and craziness.  Otherwise, look elsewhere for food unless you're in a bind.  Lastly, if anyone is willing to teach zoology to an adult, please contact me!

I really should've waited the 35minutes for a table (but I was staaahvin!)

I really shouldn't have gone to Manatus (a diner? I should know better)

I was really glad we were inside when it started raining (it was warm and cozy)

I really shouldn't have settled for the fish and chips (my stomach wasn't so "settled" after)

I really don't need to ever go back here (I still want that gouda grilled cheese...)

Have to agree with those who've praised Manatus. Our party of eight, making a quick day trip into NYC, arrived in the Village on a Friday night, hungry and rained on, in search of dinner. Manatus quickly put together a table for us. We were four boomers and four teens, so the surprising diner menu (i.e. something for everyone) worked perfectly for us. I enjoyed the spanakopita and my wife liked the greek combo.

It was also fairly affordable (for NYC). Service was attentive (especially the frequent water refills). The bathrooms could use a redesign, and could be cleaner.

I love restaurants that stay open 24-hours.  They have a huge variety of food and often times there are very friendly (but probably straight waiters).  There was this one guy with a strong Queens accent named Michael, who is very handsome  and used to remember my friends and me when we went there every week and had small talk with us.

I think every major city has a "gay cafeteria" and this one would qualify for New York.

Weather-permitting there is also outdoor seating, which is always a plus.

Manatus is the diner I love to hate. I always complain about it, I always find myself going back. The hamburgers are awesome, the salads aren't. The soup is terrific, breakfasts are hit-and-miss. A good place to go when you need something fast or it's late at night or you just can't be bothered to cook. Bring cash, though, 'cause the credit card minimum is $15.00.

Classic gay brunch-n-show-off-last-night's-catch joint.  Tasty but nothing special breakfasts, but the real fun is counting who among the boys packing this place are hung over, who are wearing last night's club wear, and which couples are going to make it through breakfast without remembering one another's name.

HOW...i mean serioulsy HOW does this place have good ratings??? this easily competes to be one of the ABSOLUTE WORST restaurants i have ever been to. The menu on display outside looked enticing...DONT BE FOOLED...first i tried to order a waldorf salad (but it comes with some mayo dressing) when i asked for it to be on the side, the waiter informed me that wasnt possible because the salad was pre-made...ummm gross...pre-made salads, sitting since g-d knows when drenched in some mayo dressing...sounds like one of the most unappetizing things in the world...

Now, not wanting to risk it and order anything else that might be pre-made (a sandwich perhaps) I just ordered an omlete..thought safe enough..right?...wrong again? a picture could only describe what this omlete looked like, unfortunately i was in too much shock to actualy snap one on my camera phone...the waiter comes out with a huge plate and a teeny tiny little omlete that looked like it had been made 10 hrs ago and was just sitting waiting for someone to order it....also the portion would only fill up a newborn baby or a mouse...at that point i knew i'd have to have a second lunch to actually be full...unfortunately this wasn't even the worst of it...

To continue...my mom ordered a chicken/avacado wrap with dressing on the side...well the dressing never came (shocker) not sure how the waiter forgot considering we were two of five people in the whole establishment (that should have been warning enough to not actually sit down...but hey...we where hungry). The insides of her wrap were brown...brown avacado...brown lettuce...just brown...absolutely gross...i wouldnt let her eat it..

Oh and the best part...i ordered a side of turkey bacon...instead the waiter brought me sausage (turkey bacon...sausage...um that doesnt sound the same to me). when he put it down in front of me....after i almost gagged at the look of it (drenched in oil and looking not even cooked) i informed the waiter that was not what i ordered...and he rolled his eyes at me (R U KIDDING)...i told him not to even bother bringing me the turkey bacon i actually did order, because i could not bear to look at anymore food. Then the waiter took the sausage sat down at the table next to us and starting eating it himself....YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP PEOPLE...so at that point, i was fully repulsed and could not WAIT to leave and write this review...

in conclusion....is you pass manatus restaurant and want to stop and eat, keep on walking to ANY OTHER restaurant down the street....

There's really nothing special about this West Village diner, but you could do worse. Obviously you can get better food in the area, but when you're looking for no fuss (or crowds), Manatus will do. We ducked in here for brunch early morning on 4th of July, just as the rain started. We shared a waffle and a veggie omelet. We had asked them to leave off the potatoes, but they somehow showed up on our plate! Oh well. The food was ok, really nothing special, and I can't say I'd recommend this place unless you have very limited options (like we did that morning). However, if you do go, you'll be fine.

A plain Greek-style diner in the middle of the west village . . . in other words, versatile and satisfying, but don't expect any life-altering culinary experiences.  Cheap, easy, and made to order are Manatus's strengths and they even deliver if you're too hungover to make it over for breakfast.  It's also one of the few places you can get cheese-fries with gravy, a half stack and a beer under one roof.

Sometimes you need to eat at obscure times, and that's when I call on Manatus.  I landed very late on Thursday night and by the time I got back to my apartment it was well past 3am.  What did Hungry Heather do?  That's right, Manatus Chef Salad (with creamy Italian dressing), done and done.  This place could definitely use an interior makeover, but for late-night delivery, it's perfection.  The fries (ask for well-done), along with the grilled chicken club and chicken fingers are solid moves as well.

I've been going here for 8 years and always love it. For breakfast the omelets are great and come with potatoes and toast. For late night a burgers and crispy fries is the way to go . In the summer you can sit outside. It's a gem!

If you love defrosted meat, you'll love Manatus. I had the beef gyro and when it arrived, I thought it looked suspiciously close to defrosted beef...perhaps it was, perhaps it wasn't - but the perfectly shaped equal slices were a bit of a tip off. Not so bad if that's your thing - cookie cutter diner food.

A good East Village 24 hour Diner, it has all the things you would expect, good food, good service, and an eclectic clientelle.

Great diner food and relatively cheap in the area.

They seem to serve everything! Though I only order the more traditional diner type food, like omelettes and sandwiches. Service is great and everyone is very friendly.

I haven't ordered anything complicated here though and would probably recommend sticking to the easier-to-make stuff. It's good for what you pay and definitely for the area!

The food is decent.  I don't expect gourmet coming from a Greek Diner;  M has some tasty soups and great meatloaf.  Service is good too. They have really creeped up in price making it worth it to an ethnic restaurant instead
