I've never stayed there but I have eaten there at the hotel restaurant so I'm going to say what I think about it.
I only go there on special occasions because it's such a far drive from where I live but the food is great, once I ordered the cheeseburger and it was STUFFED. Soda was very big and they refilled it free of charge. Service is great and until recently I didn't know that it was owned by my friend's parent. Odd eh?
5 stars.
The Manago Hotel holds a sweet spot for me in Captain Cook, Big Island of Hawaii. We always get a room on the 3rd floor -- the ocean view and balcony are priceless (and the room rates are super reasonable!). And yes, there is no TV or phone in the room and it's very basic, but I will take that any day over an overpriced room at a hotel with a view of a wall.
The flowers and plants that the hotel groundskeepers so painstakingly take care of and the sounds of the country - roosters, wild turkeys, doves, kitties and geckos - make your stay all that much more peaceful and relaxing. The Manago feels like home to me.
Love the experience staying at Manago. We got the 3rd floor Tatami with our own personal tub in the shower, really cool. The roosters starts early here, FYI, lol, so get ready to hear some crowing or put your ear plugs on.
The wind breeze in and out nicely at night (end of May) no need for A/C since they don't have one, they do provide one of those tower fans otherwise just slide the screen open and let the ocean breeze caress you gently to sleep, very nice! Front desk was very formal to us. come on brah, let it all hang out, lol.
So you say there are no affordable hotels in Hawaii? Found one.
Its 8 pm, we're in Kona, and we had nowhere to stay because we had been camping in the pouring rain the last two nights and I desperately wanted a bed and a shower. No one was picking up at any hotel in the area, or if they did they were full. All prices were in the $100's. Exhausted and frustrated, I called this place up, and an extremely kind lady told me she had plenty of rooms, and that a room on the 3rd floor with a private bathroom would be $64. WHAT.
This is a family owned hotel, established in 1917 by a Japanese mail-order bride. No frills, nothing fancy, but VERY clean and kind service. You even get a balcony! Views from the 3rd floor were spectacular, and even though we endured some slightly time-confused roosters in the middle of the night, we still slept with the balcony door open.
Other room options: traditional japanese room, and shared bathrooms (somewhere in the $30/night range - so cheap!) Also, beautiful Japanese garden in the courtyard.
Wonderful place!!
Needed a last minute hotel reservation and the Manago Hotel had rooms available. They are basic hotel rooms, but ours had a great view of the ocean and a porch. Also nice garden area in the middle with lots of plants.
Never stayed here but have eaten in the restaurant a few times.
Get the pork chop with onions and gravy!!! It's the bomb.
They have large portions, reasonable prices and friendly service.
Can't wait to go to the Big Island again.
Best pork chops I've ever had in my life, hands down. Some of the best food I've ever had in my life, actually. Years later, my husband and I still think fondly of the pork chops at Manago, and crave the day we can return to the Big Island to savor some more!
4/13/08: Old Hawaii experience. Don't expect the guava juice at check-in, this no frills hotel is all about yesteryear. Started in 1917 (how many business have you visited that have been around that long?!? Let alone in Hawaii - remember Hawaii has only been a US state since 1959). We "roughed" it out in the older section of the hotel (shared bathrooms ala european hostels). Not sure my wife will let me do that again, especially since we stayed at a full service hotel the previous two nights. Newer section of hotel has private baths and even japanese tatami rooms.
Dinner was awesome. Pork chops reign (my wife's order). I tried the butterfish misoyaki - very fresh and nice done (not over cooked and dried out). excellent prices. I should have tried the opelu - many have recommended it. When we left the restaurant around 7pm, the place was packed. Come early for a table or call for a reservation.
review is regarding the restaurant.
very old skool place but with a friendly feel.
i had the pork chops and they were pretty freakin' good! so bad for you yet so good that you gotta eat it. my gf had the fish and that was good as well. you also get white rice and some sides that you share with your party family style.
and the price is very good too.
call in advance--way in advance--to reserve the japanese room. its really a tiny time capsule with traditional touches like the futon that rests on the tatami mats and the furo tub in the bathroom. it is charming, romantic, enjoyable.
and clean!!
the cafe in the hotel makes the kind of food that can only be good for you. the pancakes are epic. the pork chops are so good you'll hallucinate. be nice to the ladies working there, they're old enough to be your grandma (and just as likely to forget something now and then).
the hotel itself is a bit of a relic but your patronage keeps this family owned piece of old hawaii alive.
Really cool old-school restaurant in a old hotel. There aren't many places like this still around these days. The hotel has one TV in the entire place...in the lobby. Old wooden dining room, specials on a chalkboard. Pork chops are their specialty and DAMN are they good (I like mine with onions and gravy). Also whatever fresh fish they have is sure to be great. Kona Boy P. gives good advice though.
