Mama Sake is the best place to go for sushi in Lake Tahoe.  The fish is always fresh and the rolls are super creative and most importantly delicious. You won't be let down if you love sushi, great service, and a fun dining environment.  Make sure to try the mamas balls you won't be disappointed.

We went to Squaw for Oktoberfest and the Village was packed! Tons of  people and their dogs all enjoy a nice, sunny fall day in Tahoe.
Our Chocolate Labs were a bit blown out by the crowds and the lines for the beer and brats were ridiculous, so we decided to go to Mamasake just for some peace.
The place had a few locals in it and we were immediately seated, although the initial greeting by one of the servers was less than cordial.
As we decided what to order from the menu, one of the young busboys came by with a carafe of water and glasses.
I don't know if he hadn't bathed in awhile or just has body odor issues, but this kid stunk!!! It was to the point of being offensive enough that we talked about leaving, but since he was a busboy and wouldn't necessarily be back we chose to stay.
I had the beef teriyaki bowl and my friends had the chicken teriyaki bento and Kani Kama Hama Yama roll.
My beef was great; cooked medium rare (the way I like it, even though the server didn't ask how I wanted it!), but the bowl lacked sauce and came with a VERY small portion of gohan (steamed rice). While on the subject of rice, being Japanese, I have a high standard when it comes to an easy staple of sushi restaurants and the rice at Mamasake, besides being a meager portion, was dry and poorly prepared.
I asked for a bit more steamed rice, and they brought a small chawan, and I would learn that I was charged $4.00 for it! Ridiculous!!! Bad rice AND $4.00? Yep, NEVER again!
Overall, not a totally terrible experience, but not a very good one either. My friends miso soup was too sweet and the chicken portion was too small, but the roll was decent, save for the too dry sushi rice (which made the roll fall apart when picked up---shameful!)
This wasn't my first time, but it will be a very long time before I return.
In retrospect, I wish I had just braved the long lines, left the dogs with my friends and had a beer and brat: MY $60.00 would have gone a LOT farther!

Mamasake Sushi is just plain awful. The sushi roles are dense and gummy, over down with sauce and the like, and without any sort of inspiration flavor wise.  it will do the job if you absolutely must get some food and drinks after a long day of skiing. But if you can hold out,  go to the Drunken Monkey in Truckee for much better meal.

After an incredibly long day of hiking & thinking about sushi, my husband and I dropped in to Mamasake to get our japanese food fix. We ordered the Chips N' Tuna-avo Salsa, Rock n' Roll, Norcal spicy tuna, and Mamazilla rolls. I liked that I didn't have to ask for low sodium soy sauce; it was already right there at the table.

The Chips N' Tuna-avo Salsa: small-sized corn chips and not quite enough of them. The salsa itself was tasty, but there just wasn't $12 worth of it (in my humble, hungry opinion).

Rock n' Roll: I liked the spicy sauce that accompanied this roll - went really well together with the shrimp tempura on it.

Norcal spicy tuna: I was intrigued that this roll was made with brown rice v.s. the usual white sushi rice. It tasted much different than other spicy tuna rolls that I've had. It was good, but not my favorite.

Mamazilla: Hands down, the winner of the night. I couldn't tell you what was in it without pulling up their menu as it was jam-packed with all kinds of goodness and who knows how many spicy sauces, but it all went great together. Definitely would get this one again if we ever come back here.

I think this might be the only sushi restaurant in Squaw Valley, so I do recommend coming here if you're hankering for some sashimi or a crazy Mamazilla roll & you're staying in the area; it's conveniently located in the village. Just a warning that they are a bit on the pricey side though...

If nothing else...the Stop Drop and Roll is a name to remember. We have been coming to Mamasake for years. The owner cares about her labor of love there in Squaw. Yeah, she hires locals...good for her. Yeah, on a particular night there might be some rowdies in there at the end of a long day... good for Mamasake for keeping them off the street ;-). Plus Mamasake always kicks down for Autumn Food and Wine and we appreciate that... must be hard to make 400 small bites for free. Bless your heart to keep us foodies happy.
For a visitor, it's sushi you can count on, the patio outside has a tremendous view and it's dog friendly (behaved dogs only please), and you can't beat the $5 hand roll and beer happy hour.
If you want to be included in the local scene...just go on inside and stop whining, sit down and don't act like you are from the Bay Area.

I had been to Mamasake a few years back and had been unimpressed.  The good news is that it seems like they have turned it around.  I really enjoyed my sushi there.

Mamasake is in Squaw Valley Village, on the ground level of the condo buildings.  Despite the low ceilings, the environment is open and doesn't feel at all like a hole in the wall kinda place.

I must critique the beverage service first.  They couldn't get a simple Arnold Palmer right.  Surely an Arnold Palmer isn't that hard to do.  As far as the food goes, there were no disappointments.  I started with the classic sashimi of Hamachi with sauce and Serrano chiles.  The fish was top notch and the Serrano gave it a nice pop. My first roll was Nor Cal Spicy Tuna, though I opted for the white rice instead of the brown rice on the menu.  No hassle on the substitution.  It was a treat for the eyes and the taste buds.  On my second roll I went big with the Mamas Insanity.  While not as visually appealing as the first roll, it had substance to it and a lot of flavor.

Price wise, Mamasake does skew a bit to the high end, but not too outrageous for a resort setting.

I'll most definitely be visiting Mamasake again.

The concept of sushi in Tahoe is a bit unsettling, but our group of 12 tried Mamasake take-out a few weeks ago... and were happy with the result.

I ordered a curry noodle bowl of sorts, then shared a couple rolls with my wife and cleaned up after my kids' chicken skewers.  All pretty tasty, and ready within 10-15 minutes of calling.

The sushi here is great. I liked the California rolls and the spicy tuna, and wish I could review more of the food, but we only sampled a few things because the wait was so out of control (we were there for 1.5 hours) and painful that we had to leave. It was the restaurant wait from hell: about 30 obnoxious people (a lot of them blonde teenage girls), packed into the entrance area, some yelling at the hostess, others acting like teenagers. It was like waiting in a lift line. The crowd here is literally painful to be around, and the place is extremely loud no matter where you're seated.

The people who work here have got to learn how to turn a table. When there are 30 people waiting on the day before New Year's eve and you don't take reservations, you can't let people sit there for hours after they're done eating. I think the problem is that this is a restaurant run by ski bums, not by restaurant people, and the experience suffers because of it.

Don't know if I'd go back ever - I can get sushi in the city and the crowd here is like being back in a California high school - too many fake blonde valley girls.

We were very pleased at how fresh the sushi was,  their rolls were original, and the portions were very ample. They serve a surf and turf roll that was pretty disgusting, but the roll (I wish I could remember the name) that was a play on the restaurant's name was great!

We visited in the off season, but on a Friday night and the place was packed with locals. It is pretty small and therefore loud, but it had a fun party atmosphere even they just kept looping the same five David Bowie songs over and over and over.

We didn't mind the noise, but when some friends of the staff arrived the service slowed to a halt for the next two hours. I understand mingling with your friends, but they were letting them have the run of the house. They were certainly not drinking age, but the friends were soon sloshed and yelling, "motherf***in'" this and that.

I wish I could say I was exaggerating.

We had ordered some miso soup with our rolls, and had only received the rolls two hours later. Finally, we flagged down the closest server and asked for our bill. Her indignant reply was, "what you don't want you miso?" I tried to explain that we were going to miss our last shuttle if we waited much longer and her response: "yeah , we're really busy. You should be more patient."

Uhm, nice. It's not like they making the soup fresh...we could see all the other servers ladling it out of the warmer all night. But, that girl didn't care, she just wanted to show off to her friends, whom she promptly popped back to and pointed at us with plenty of eye rolling and big arm gestures.

When our server came by to drop off the bill, he explained that he took the miso off and was very quick about getting our bill taken care of, so we could get to our shuttle.

That girl, with her friends, was so incredibly rude that I wanted to give this place 1 star. But that wouldn't have been fair to all of the other nice servers and the good food. Then again, those servers thought her foul mouth friends were a blast too. I suppose there really isn't that much to do around there on a Friday night, and if the place looks empty of eighteen year old girls in faux 80's attire and Beastie Boy wannabees, check it out.

Though some may disagree, I'm no food snob.  I enjoy my occasional bowl of ramen noodles . . . brings back those college memories of microwaving (er, I mean, boiling) water to make a CHEAP semi-satisfying bowl o' spicy-flavored noodles.  Unfortunately, I was not looking to relive my college memories when I unknowingly ordered a $10 bowl of bland ramen noodles, disguised as "Vegetable Noodle Soup" on the Mamasake menu.  TEN DOLLARS?!  Doesn't ramen cost $0.39 at the grocery store?  The vegetables were a measly collection of sprouts, shredded carrots, cilantro, a pinch of basil.  I was looking for some comfort food, but was left feeling cheated, ripped off, and with an unsatisfied belly.

So, that plus the 1.5 hour wait plus the mediocre service earned Mamasake only 3 stars for me.  My friends did order some rolls (Hakuna Matata & Yakimaki), and they were quite yummy, fresh-tasting, and different (innovative).

I've only been to Mamasake a few times, but so far it ranks as my favorite sushi place in Truckee/North Lake Tahoe.  I suppose the place is reasonably hip or it at least makes an effort to be given the decor, location, etc. and it definitely caters to the SF yuppie tourist crowd, but the prices are reasonable (not cheap, but not outrageous either), the sushi is very good, and the service is OK.

As far as favorites go, I highly recommend the Rock N' Roll, Hakuna Matata, and the damn tasty Kani Kama Hama Yama.  I am also a big fan of the Stop Drop and Roll, but it might be too spicy for some people.  I am not going to get into what's in each of these (because I actually have a life, or at least like to pretend I do), but you can check out the menu on their website.

One more note, while Mamasake isn't the super-best sushi place in the world, it is a solid choice and it definitely blows away Java Sushi in Truckee.

Best and only sushi in the area.  Get the sesame tofu roll in addition to the traditional vegetarian selections, if that is your predilection.

They care about their patrons and seem to support the local economy. Good stuff even when they are super busy like they were when we were there.

The "Lady K" and I were expecting so much more but it only matched our expectations about 1/2 way. Yeah the menu is very inventive and has all the catchy names you would expect from a place that's charging $15 a roll but that only takes you so far.

The sushi was just ok. Not mind blowing at all. What was good and worth going back for was the item called Mama's Balls - see my picture. A fried goodness that explodes in your mouth with a single bit.

Also worth checking out is the tuna sliders. We wanted the tofu sliders but the waiter messed up and we ended up with these on our table. Glad we did as they were very tasty!

Ate here over Thanksgiving weekend. This was my 3rd time coming to Mamasake. The first time we had a full dinner and it was enjoyable. The 2nd time, we ate lunch outside in the summer. That was nice :) This time we came for their Happy Hour special after walking around Squaw Village in the snow with my huskies :)

Each time the food has been good. I am pretty picky about my sushi and they do not disappoint.

The happy hour special is a beer or sake and a handroll (spicy tuna or salmon) for $5. The beers offered were Bud and Bud Light and their house sake I guess. But you can upgrade the beer for $1.50. I don't drink beer and don't like sake. But I like sushi :) And they had a decent cava by the glass. So I ordered a sushi roll and and a bubbly. Bu everyone else ordered the specials (upgraded beer or sake) and enjoyed them :) And there is no limit on the number you can order.

Their sushi is pretty yummy. Although my favorite sushi is still Yoshimi in Christmas Village at  Incline. BY FAR. WAY...SERIOUSLY...

But if you are in Tahoe City or at Squaw, especially after snowboarding/skiing, this is a great place to go as you can just ride right down to the village :).

Our waitress this time was a complete airhead but oh well. The bartender was helping us out too and he was good.

Having been the Village a few times, we always missed out on having a meal at Mamasake.  But, we finally decided to try it out.  I was pleasantly surprised that the fish was very fresh and the sushi was inventive.

    What did we have?
    1) Mama's Balls - scallop, shrimp and kani-kama stuffed into a inari pocket and tempura battered and fried.  very substantial and tasty
    2) Mamasake Yakimaki - seared salmon, cucumber with white nori
    3) California roll with tempura rock shrimp - (can't remember the official name) - came with two types of mayo drizzled over the roll.  I liked it a lot.
    4) Glass noodles in a thai style coconut cream sauce - very very very coconutty.  It was not exactly what I had expected. Did not care for it as much.

Overall... the food was good, service was a little shoddy.  Our waiter took a long time to come over to us, then about 5 to 10 minutes after he took my order, he come over again, with menus, said "hi... welcome"..... ummm... dude! you took my order a while back!!!  Anyway, food took a little while to come but fortunately, the food did not taste like it had been sitting around.

Great beer and sake list.  Wine list is a little small but decent. Prices are little higher than most sushi places.

Call this a "sushi" place? What planet do they think Tahoe Tourists come from? First off, the place was LOUD - acoustics were shit - had to stand up to shout our order to the "sushi chef."

Secondly, we sat and the sushi bar wondering where the f*** our waiter was (needed a frosty beverage, don't you know). AND the sushi chef was a really young white guy. Normally, I like really young white guys. Just not making my sushi. Yes, I'm a snob. A sushi snob at least. Sushi is an Art Form that takes Years of Training. This guy obviously did a sushi-101 course at the local community college. We didn't have the bollocks to try the raw fish - I like my fish with a pulse still - so stuck with inari (no-one beats Mumsy's inari), unagi (um...okay), edamame (well, at least it was hot), and tempura - or what they loosely called tempura...definitely NOT tempura batter, and what's with the mayo-based sauces - erch!

The only good thing was the california roll - we ordered 2 because we couldn't find anything that was remotely edible on the menu - and the papaya/jicama salad (very...er...Japanese...NOT).

And why oh why did they play Bob Marley on the big screen TV? I have no idea.

Bottom line: good food, poor service.  The Mama's Balls were great. The two rolls that we ordered, the Mamazilla and the Stop Drop and Roll were very tasty. The service was pretty bad though. We waited 15 mins for menus to start and in general everything was extremely slow. Prices were high  but what can you expect from the village at squaw. Everything is expensive!

The sashimi was fresh and good, though the serving was a bit small for $20. I had to ask for two fish; otherwise I would have only gotten one :(.  The other food was lacking. Miso soup was decent. Tempura on the rolls was tasteless and squishy. The vegetable plate was doused in a salty chinese-ish sauce. Even the rice was bland. Servings were small and not satisfying. Tourist-Japanese at its worst.

So $100 later (for 4), we walked directly to the creperie truck for some crepes. $8 for pesto, tomato, cheese, and spinach.  Mmm!

As someone pointed out during our meal, we should have eaten somewhere else. We knew the restaurants would all have similar (poor) quality since they have the market cornered, and therefore have no incentive to improve. Bad italian is still decent, but bad asian food is terrible. Lesson learned.

3 stars to Mamasake - but could be HIGHER.

I live at Tahoe and the closest, cool sushi spot is Mamasake. BUT:

Hit and miss. On occasion, based on good service (a timely bartender and waiter) - it has been GREAT. As a local, I have little choice - but to find good presentations, a solid menu and atmosphere is a bit sparse here (there are definitely more Pines and Fir trees than sushi spots nearby).

OK, so I won't be too critical of this place being short staffed on a busy night, and I won't be too critical of the DB level (if a group comes in - and takes a table for 8) - it can be a distraction.

There should be NO distraction other than the guests you are with and the portions being presented. Their sake list is diverse and curious.

Parking is EASY - you have the entire SV parking lot within yards of the entrance. If you are at/near Tahoe, give Mama a try. I do as often as I can.

I should have paused for a second and thought about what the name "STOP DROP AND ROLL " meant before I ordered this sushi roll (then again, it would've also helped if i knew that habanero and serrano were types of peppers). By far the spiciest japanese food i've eaten in my life. I went through a good 5-6 glasses of water by the time I left. Luckily, I love spicy foods, and I love sushi. The tuna was definitely fresh and delicious. the cucumber salad was a very appropriate side- tasty, but helped put out the fire in my mouth.

The mamas balls are a must-try. They were delicious and the service was quick and attentive, if a little impersonal. Also tried a spicy roll of the menu which was delicious. the fish tasted very fresh and I will definitely be bak to try the entire menu.

We have been going to Squaw for the past 4 years and have eaten here numerous times.  In the past, the food was pretty good and the service decent.  The only thing that bothered us was the extraordinarily loud music.  However, on our last visit, we noticed that many of our favorite items which work well for kids or vegans were taken off the menu so it was very disappointing.  Again, we are not judging this on the regular sushi but if you are vegetarian/vegan or have kids, take a closer look at the menu before going.

$5 beer and a hand roll. Now that's a deal, especially in Squaw Valley where everything seems to cost about 25% more.  Otherwise prices have gone way up over the past couple years.  After riding on the hill it's a great place to hang and chat with others over a beer and a hand roll but not my cup of tea for dinner.  Almost every roll has some kind of mayonnaise sauce on it, or just plain mayo squeezed on the plate.  Not a big fan of the "Cal fusion" either: ordered unagi nigiri and I swear it was smeared with Texas style BBQ sauce!  The service could be kicked up a notch too, takes a while sometimes. Order a lot at first or you will be there for a long time.  I do have to say though, the "Mamas Balls" are delicious.

The sushi tastes great, but man is this expensive for what you get! they shoulda called it mamaexpensive. or mamasucker. if they say you "pay for the atmosphere", then i'm gonna be expecting a lot more from the place. like an open bar and a couple lap dances or something. if you can find this place on a slow night, and someone else is buying, then i'd suggest coming to mamasake. i'd give 2 stars because of the price and because it's at squaw, but the sushi really is good, so 1 star bonus!

While sitting outside on the patio was undeniably beautiful, I think their menu is a little too convoluted, and most rolls are $12-15. I prefer Java Sushi in Truckee.

Definitely the best sushi around! I eat here at least 2-3 times a month and I have yet to have a bad experience. My favorites are the rock and roll, nor cal roll, and mammas balls. Prices can be steep, but its well worth it!

If you are looking for the best food in Squaw, it's at Mamasake.  Best happy hour special, the $5 for a bud and a handroll can't be beat.  I recommend the Stop Drop and Roll and the Mama's basic with a bottle of Nigori.  It's also a great place to watch a game or a ski movie on the huge screen.  Wednesday is locals night and they have deals for locals or those who know to ask.

My wife and I, along with our two kids, had lunch here on a summer weekend. The first thing I noticed is that the sushi chef didn't look like most sushi chefs at the sushi restaurants I most frequent. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but I wouldn't normally expect the guy who is rolling my sushi to look like he's about to hit the skateboard ramp at the X-Games... if you know what I mean.

For the most part, the sushi was just okay. Nothing memorable, but nothing horrible either.

The service was great. The place was virtually empty  when we were there, so I'm not sure if the service we got was the norm, but it was excellent.

The price was a bit much for what we got, but that's expected since the restaurant is in the Village. We ordered a bowl of chicken teriyaki over rice for the kids for 10 dollars. It was one sliced up chicken breast over about a cup of rice - pretty skimpy for the price.

Overall, I have to give it 2 stars for the quality of the food and the value, but I have to give it an extra star for the quality of service we received.

Good service, great fresh Ginger and the tuna salad appetizer was great. The rolls I had were not as tasty as I would have liked. Price a bit steep.

Overall, it is a little overpriced, but their happy hour $5 special for beer and a handroll rocks!

capping off a fantastic adventure-filled weekend, my group of friends and i were lucky enough to enjoy a catered mamasake lunch at the trinity spa.  the sushi rolls were beautiful to look at, and tasted even better!  the edamame were also excellent, as was the starter salad.  for a group of tired and worn-out ladies, seeing this meal waiting for us was like heaven on a plate. yummmm.

I eat hear weekly.  If you read a bad review I can almost guarantee that they were passing through and it is more about being hungry, irritated with your family or some other situation.  The fish is crazy fresh- they get it shipped direct from Hawaii and Fuji.  No all you can eat- and if you want all you can eat this is not the place for you.  This is about unique fresh approaches to fish...and sometimes not fish at all.  Steak and Potatoes satisfy my fish fearful friends.  My favorite roll is the Italo Veggie- tempura hearts of palm, roasted read pepper, little bit of cream cheese, fresh basil, then the roll is rolled in caramelized garlic and dressed with balsamic vinaigrette!  Seriously!  OR the 3 shroom roll with truffle oil.  Try the Poke- for a fresh fish salad prepared with the Hawaiian style.  You really can not go wrong.  For those that are fanatic about ordering from the sushi chefs- no go here and if you are there on a Fri or Sat night in Feb you would totally understand why!  They can chat with you and are friendly and knowledgeable.

Fun, loud place. Lots of good vibe and sushi. Our server was very attentive and friendly. Great place to hang out on a date or with friends.
