3 reviews for Mama Quan's Tiki Hut
Disclaimer: I don't want to steer anyone wrong. This place may be closed for the next few months. Evidentially, the "tiki bar" theme is just filler until the owner does a total rehaul.
I hit this place for happy hour with a friend that lives in Clarendon. It was pretty evident that the decor was thrown together quickly. There were a few surfboards here and there, stuffed animal parrots in cages, and a pseudo thatched roof. I could still see the faux grape leaves from the Aegean Taverna on the roof. Sad.
We ordered one of the house specials called a Papa Quan which consisted of 2 kinds of lower quality rum and a mix of different sodas I could not quite identify. I am all for tropical drinks, but this one was waaay to sweet, and served in bright blue plastic tiki mug---not a cocktail glass. For eight bucks, I want a real glass. And what? No Mai Tais? As far as the music---Bob Marley was prevalent.
We each grabbed a bite since we both were starving. I had a Mahi Club Sandwich (with mahi, lettuce, bacon and tomato) and she had a Hawaiian Po' Boy (basically a tilapia po' boy). Both were good enough for a tiki bar type hang.
Since we were there during happy hour, we took advantage of the two dollar beers. That was a good deal after the tropical drink debacle. All in all, a fun place to hang out but I am not disappointed about the change to something different. Hopefully the owners will do it better.
I give this 3.5 stars for ingenuity and good business sense, even if it does fall short.
Mama Quan's is a temporary restaurant/bar that was designed to be a profitable space during the summer months. The owners (same as Whitlows) will be turning this into a high-end restaurant sometime early fall. This is why the decor is sparse (surfboards cover the walls), the drinks aren't served in anything even resembling cool Polynesian glassware and the food is not good. On the plus side, they serve some rather large drinks (I cannot remember how many oz, but up there), they have a pool table and some other games, but best of all they have great outdoor seating (ambiance courtesy of what Aegean Taverna left behind) and lots of it. I think a major draw for the weekday crowd is the light beer specials (Miller and another) that are $2 a pop from 5 to 7 PM. I am hopeful that the 'high-end' restaurant is going to WOW (pun on WOW - Whitlows On Wilson, not intended) us all - we need that.
Is no more. Mama Quan's is history.
