The food was decent, but the prices were high for Mexican food. I would recommend their enchiladas though.

The drinks were tasty too, but still pretty pricey.

We will probably go again just because we love Mexican food, and this place is really close to the house.

Very slow service during lunch and it was practically empty.

Food was fine, nothing memorable.  I'm definitely not one to worry about prices but it was expensive for lunch portions.

    I would not go back.

I agree with everyone else that the guacamole is great.  The food is good yet it is pricey fro Mexican food.  I like the atmosphere (even the Mariachi Band) except for how tight the place can feel.

The food was pretty good, but the not for the prices. The cheapest entree was over $20, then when you add guacamole and drinks, you can expect to pay $50 easily per person.

The decor was very cheesy and cheap looking. While I have no major complaints about the service, it is not the excellent service you would expect at these prices.

For $20 an entree, I would recommend heading down the street to Dos Caminos which offerrs much more of a fine-dining experience.

I don't really get this place, and I'm not sure it gets itself either.

The decor is loud, bright, colorful, and definitely not the kind of place that you would expect to be $50+ per person. There is literally nothing vegetarian on the main menu, and I had to ask for a special veggie-only menu. That's kind of weird.

The food itself was decent, but definitely not what I would expect for the price. The white sangria was pretty good, but again, not worth the high pricetag. Fruit was limited to a few pieces of oranges and apples and maraschino cherries. I could easily make a much better one myself, and I've never made sangria in my life.

Also, protip: They include a suggested tip in your bill and make it look like an autograt, but they DON'T add it when they run your card. We were about to walk out without tipping until I realized this.

Mediocre food, but I have been spoiled by living in So Cal.  Oh how I miss all the Mexican food there...and for such cheap prices.

Speaking of, this place is pricey.  The guacamole that they make in front of you is delicious, and the huge, flavored margarita pitchers are tasty.  If you want some upscale Mexican food...actually, forget it.  Go to the more authentic and cheaper places.  Your taste buds (and wallet) will thank you for it.

Wow, I wish I had read more recent reviews on Yelp for Mama Mexico. I have been going to Mama Mexico for many years, and on a recent trip I discovered (the hard way) that everything I loved about the restaurant - they have done away with!!

They used to have a menu that was approximately 10 pages long (give or take) and an entire section devoted to vegetarian food. Prices used to be cheaper and the environment used to be young and fun.

I went there last week, with a group of 5 and all 5 of us left disappointed. Not a single item was less than $20. Service was painfully slow, as there was some confusion it seemed on where to seat us and even chips+salsa refill took forever. It seemed that no one working there spoke English. The one, token veggie entree on the menu had absolutely NO taste.

I'm not sure if Mama Mexico is feeling the pinch from Dos Caminos down the street, but if you want to charge Dos prices, you better have the ambiance and service and good food of Dos Caminos!

They get an extra star for my watermelon margarita and guacamole - but everything else - NOT good.

I made a reservation for Cinco de Mayo where they had a "special Cinco De Mayo menu" which didn't have any appetizers and all overpriced entrees.  We split the paella and fajitas (which took over 45 mins to be served).  It was nothing special - cheap Mexican food that I could probably get for $5 in Texas but instead it was ~$50/person.

I know good Mexican food is hard to come by in NYC (if there is any at all) but I prob. will never come back here again. However - Happy Cinco De Mayo!

    Jumped the shark.

In 2005-2006 I lived right around the corner from Mama Mexico and it was a great oasis to get away and have killer margaritas and food.  My my how the times have changed.  The margaritas are about 1/2 the size they used to be, and weak.  And the food is twice as expensive.

Service was never a big thing there, but for the higher prices, you would expect top notch service.

I gave two stars as a round-up from 1.5. Not going anytime soon.  Dos Caminos it is for that hood... I wish there were better options.

Is this authentic Mexican food? Umm... it's a little questionable.

Came here for lunch- got the Camrones Hornitos ($20 bucks). I got 4 pcs of baby shrimp and a small scoop of rice and black beans.

No refills on my drink. Decent service

But the gucamole was fresh and pretty tasty. That's why I'm giving this place 3 stars.

It's definitely sub-par from my experiences at other Mexican restaurants on the West Coast.

I probably won't come back ever unless someone is buying me lunch.

I have to say I was completely underwhelmed and disappointed with this place, especially after I raved about their other location on the Upper West Side. It was like 2 completely different restaurants!

The menu was half as big, along with their portion sizes and twice the price! I still can't believe I paid $11 for a glass of sangria that was entirely ice and I got 3 sips out of. Go with the margarita instead, at least you get a little more bang for your $11.

The food was still tasty, I ordered the same Chimichanga I ordered at their other location but I was disappointed to see half the portion I had gotten before arrive in front of me. Their table side guacamole is still up to par though.

I made a reservation with open table, and even though I checked in at the front and I saw them drag my name to a table, they canceled my reservation... an hour after I had already finished eating there!! (I WANT MY OPEN TABLE POINTS!!)

Will not be going back to this location again, but I do highly recommend their Upper West Side location.

I came here on a date a few months ago.  It was okay.  I'm not a huge Mexican fan anyway, as I like more simple dishes without a bunch of stuff on them, so I may be a biased judge, but I've definitely had better Mexican.

There was a guy walking around with a guitar singing to the tables, which were few.  This was actually a first date so when he came over to us, it was quite awkward.  I guess other people might find it cute, but I don't like someone hovering over me while I'm eating/talking.

I got a chicken dish and the chicken was extremely thin and not much taste, especially for a Mexican place.  I do really like spicy, but was pretty disappointed.  The service was really good and the ambiance was much different than most of New York.  Extremely bright and a little tacky, but in a fun way.

Margaritas were really good.  I guess I'd give it 2.5 stars (though I hate when people say that), but not a three...seems a bit too high.

Have you ever gotten dragged to a spot, that you know is just going to suck because the person who recommended it has the palate of a 5 year old?  Well, that's exactly how I ended up here.

The guacamole was $13, and I could've eaten it by myself nevermind having to split it with other people.  The chips and salsa?  Your table starts to get charged after the second basket, which isn't much for a table of six.  I ended up getting a plate of chicken enchiladas for $20...seriously?  At a place called Mama Mexico??  Needless to say, the enchiladas or this restaurant weren't anything to write home about.

Mama Mexico is a pretty decent place for some better than average Mexican-ish food. Its a little more fru fru than I prefer my Mexican but the guac is great, chips and salsa are solid, and the chile relleno is tasty. For Midtown, its prob the best Mexican you can get. Dos Caminos is so overrated!!!

Ok this is not all that great.  I went in on a Sunday afternoon, not very busy but my service was slow.  The food was just alright and a bit bland for mexican food.  The tea was sour and the coke that replaced it, they charged me for both.

I thought for a $45 dollar meal for one, it would be much better.  In NYC you have many choices so I would pass this one by.

Mama Mexico is located in a great area! Easy access by subway...

The drinks were over priced for the quality. I've had better drinks at some low end eateries.  Not only did the Margaritas tasted watered down but the taste was off.

The famed guacamole was decent ... hence the 2 stars.

    Service - lacking...

Costs: over priced for the quality of the food...

The only positive experience was being there with some cool friends!

We were five for dinner and because I was unsure of how difficult iot would be to park in midtown, we arrived a little early. The servers at M-M were accommodating and seated us even though we were early. While we waited for our fourth to arrive, the three of us seated early took a look at the drink menu. Maybe I am not used to NYC prices, but I thought twelve or thirteen dollars for a a Margarita was a little over the top. I am not a big fan of these sweet drinks anyway so I ordered a Mexican beer.

When we were all seated, we decided on an order of guacamole which was creatively prepared at the table to our collective tastes. Unfortunately for me this defaulted us to mild rather than medium or hot and I certainly would have appreciated either of the latter. Still the "guac" was great and we inhaled it along with corn chips. The salsa that accompanied the chips was rather bland too, although it was fresh tasting.

I found the menu a little disappointing. Somehow I expected a more sophisticated and/or novel menu. Instead, the menu had very traditional dishes as you would expect to find in a suburban Mexican restaurant in a strip mall. They did have a lot of seafood dishes; more than most Mexican restaurants offer. I had one of the fajita combinations and it was voluminous, but not exactly tasty. It was served with flour tortillas and not really enough of them and because it lacked flavor, I asked for hot sauce. I found this dish very disappointing. The others at the table also commented that what they selected was just so-so as well.

On the positive side, the service was very attentive, the restaurant was clean and well kept and the food did look appetizing. We walked around the neighborhood and read the menus of four other Mexican places within a few blocks. I think if I ever want Mexican food in that neighborhood, I will try one of those other places.

I had dinner there last night with a friend - while the food was very good it is very pricey for Mexican.  The service was horrible.  Our waitress was rude.  It appeared when we asked her to turn the volume down that she turned our service level down.

    For traditional Mexican food overpriced!

Missing the excitement of the UWS location.  No appetizers!?  The whole "make guac at your table thing" is so 90's.  The entrees aren't that exciting.  The decor is cheesy.  The service is borderline decent.  This place is not worth it.

This place needs to get over itself - it is WAY overpriced. Luckily I had a gift certificate from Living Social for this visit but I will definitely not be back.

Thank goodness when they asked if wanted any guacamole I said no (even though I love it) because if you say yes, that guacamole will cost you THIRTEEN DOLLARS! I know it is made to order and restaurants mark things up but I could mace guac at home for 1/4 of that!

The restaurant itself was cramped and noisy (the guitar player didn't help things), my boyfriend and I had to shout across the table to hear each other and we may as well have been sitting with and conversing with our neighbors on both sides. The environment was in no way comfortable.

Food itself was decent (3-3.5 star) and came out quickly but still overpriced for the portion. ($20-30 dollar entrees and we didn't have any leftovers).

2 entrees + 2 coronas were $56+ tip so about $67. You can do much better.

    Friday at 8:30.

The wait was about 30-40 minutes, so we took a seat at the bar, where the very kind bartender took care of us.  We were able to order from the normal menu while sitting at the bar too, which was great because we were all extremely hungry.

Drinks were good (said my friends-- I just got a beer).  We also ordered the very popular table-side guacamole, which was $13 (I could make it for $5) but tasty.

In my opinion, the entrees were very, very expensive.  Veggie dishes and appetizers were about $15, and meat or seafood dishes ranged from $16-$28.  They do have a lot of variety, though (huge menu!)  Fortunately I was able to split the Burritos de Pescado, which were fresh and well made.  It was enough for 2 people with the chips and guac taken into account, but I wouldn't split it a la carte.

The ambiance was nice, with the mariachi guitarist coming around frequently and the servers checking in just often enough.

My budget won't let me make this a regular place, but I was pretty happy with it!

They changed their menu for Friday and Saturday night. There is less selection and I think they only put the most expensive items on that menu. There arent even any appetizers anymore. Also, the cocktail menu is different as well. Oh yeah, the credit card machine was broken too

    This place is totally shady!

Also, super over priced, was like $25 for fajitas and $13 for guacamole that had way too much lemon in it

I had a Living Social deal for $50 worth of food and drinks so I decided to try it out. The place is really nice with a bar on the first level and seating on the second level. For a Wednesday night around 7pm, a lot of people were there even after we left, which was around 9:30pm.

To start, they have a very big menu with descriptions of each item. I got the Red Snapper stuffed with crab meat which came with a side of beans and rice ($28). It was very tasty. My boyfriend got the Fajita Del Mar, which came with Red Snapper, Salmon, and sides of guacamole, sour cream, refried beans, and rice ($25). We also got the calamari asado ($12), a classic margarita ($12), and some kind of martini ($10). The food was really good, but I wish it was more spicy. I felt like there was no spiciness in any of the dishes. The drinks were good; I felt they were balanced in alcohol and sweetness.

Also, when you sit down, they give you a complimentary glass of water and nachos with salsa. They also ask if you want an order of guacamole, but you probably shouldn't order it because it's $13-14.

They also have an extensive wine and spirits menu with a dessert menu on the back. We got some crepe dish that came with vanilla ice cream. It was good, but very sweet. I think we should have went with the flan.

The host and waiters were all very accommodating and don't bother you unless you ask them to. The music was kind of loud, which didn't really bother me. The atmosphere was very...Mexican. Lol. This is a good place for food and drinks, but don't go overboard. The appetizers all range from $8-20, entrees are all around the mid-$20s or more, and the drinks are around $10-15. Around mid-town, I guess it's pretty normal.

I would come back for the food and drinks, but I think if they turned the music volume down, it would make me want to come more. :)

I've been here twice now, both times for a friend's birthday when there were about 10 of us.  They seat you promptly, a little slow on the service but I'll give them credi for last night because they had about 3 large parties.  Guacamole is one of the best I've had, this past time though it wasn't as spicy as we asked for, but still good.  Their dishes have alot of flavor, I got the Enchilades de Barindo...alot of food! Their menu is a little pricey, and their pitchers of margaritas and sangria are a little pricey as well, but, they were good.

The restaurant is a little loud, and they have a mariachi singer that will come over and ask for any song you want to hear which I thought is so authentic and amazing to have!  There is a back area that is outside with a makeshift rooftop, they must have tables and a bar out there in the summer (I've only been in the wintertime.)  I've never been to the other locations, apparently the UWS location is much bigger, but I like this one!

    alright.
guac and drinks were almost as same price as the fajitas - that's wrong.
    service was good.
chx and beef fajitas were good - but barely any meat, mostly onions.
restauarant interior is drab - bright white and crowded dining.
live music was nice to listen to, but i think having the musician playing table side is so tacky, dated, and annoying.

Came here on a wednesday evenining. The happy hour there is $4 dollars beer and $8 dollars margarita until 7pm.
They have many flavors of margaritas but the happy hour deal doesn't apply to margaritas on the rocks, which is $10 dollars
I had the guava margarita on the rocks which was sweet and good. A bit on the weak side.
We sat by the bar, and it was freezing over there with the AC directly above us blowing super cold air and the AC was dripping cold water on us. Several customers complained about the cold, but the waiters kept saying they can't lower it because it was central AC.
They gave us chips with salsa, the salsa was good, but the chips probably wasn't fried with fresh oil.

The service wasn't great. We had to keep flagging down the bartender to get service.
Overall, just ok, probably wont return unless in the area and have no other options

It was an awful experience.  This place was so crowded and they had us all stacked in there like sardines that it was a total FIRE HAZARD!

When we got there, they told us it would be a 40 min wait.  It ended up being a 20 min wait... HOWEVER, when they sat us we were right in the middle of a long cafeteria-style table that was so packed with people we might as well have been dining with them.  (This was worse than your typical NYC stacked two-top style dining set up.)

We asked for another table.  We were then seated at another two top near the entry stairs that they clearly add on during busy nights because the chairs were broken and the table was wobbly.  In the five minutes we were sitting at this table, more than 10 people continued to kick my chair as they passed by.  I had waiters passing by carrying huge trays of plates with sizzling fajitas that I just kept envisioning falling on me because they kept tripping on my chair.

We requested another table again. Finally got a table in the corner, out of harms way.  The bench was totally worn out and it felt like I was sitting in a bucket, but at this point we just wanted to order and eat.

I would give the food 4 stars.  Fresh, tasty and good portions.  This was the only good part.

$12 Margarita was good, but not strong. It tasted more like a $4 Margarita.

The place was so loud, hot and over crowded that all we wanted to do was get the hell out of there by the end.

My next visit to Mama Mexico will probably be just for the tableside fresh guacamole (yum!) and maybe a drink or two.  Unlike most weekday night/weekend afternoon drink specials you can find around Midtown East... don't expect to find any here.

But the staff are friendly-- bonus that they're authentically Latin-- and the atmosphere a good 'old place to hangout with a small group of friends.

    Nice and clean with a fully-stocked bar.  : )

My husband and I went on a Saturday night because we had a "groupon" coupon.  We paid 22 dollars for $50 dollars worth of food at a restaurant we never visited, so we decided to go.

The place was mobbed.  The seating area was so tight, that I brushed up against someone's food tray to get to my seat.  It would be fine to jam your friends in for a party together, but this place was not for an elegant meal.  Despite the crowd, the manager greeted us at the door, and seated us pretty quickly.

The tequila selection was ok, I get the sense that total foodies nor tequila snobs go there, but I enjoyed a nice Don Julio.

The crowd was so packed, that when they made gucamole, we had to pass it to two other tables before we got ours was passed to us.  The service was prompt, and the food was good (I got the skirt steak - very large portion for 28 dollars and my husband got an expensive fish.

One tequila, two entrees, one guacamole later we used our $50 coupon (50 dollars) and the residual bill including tax and tip was 82 dollars.  I was kind of surprised, but hey- we didnt order less expensive entrees.    The portions were good and it was a nice night.

If the ambiance were more spacious and high end, I would have been fine with the pricing, but it just seems to be a restaurant caught between the "Mary Ann's" casual fun packed enviornment with Dos Caminos pricing.  They just need to make up their mind what they want to be.

This Mexican joint went far beyond some customize-able homemade gaucamole and a good margarita-- the food was exceptional.  Though a bit pricey, each entree is loaded up with meat and seafood at a sizzling perfection.  Instead of having some meat and sides to stuff into your fajita, you have a pile of goodies and some wrap to go with it if you manage to find room in your tummy!

The place was also incredibly lively and packed, so reservations are a good bet if you're planning to go during peak-times (weekend nights).  There was also live music that go around with very little time in between during breaks.  In all, it was a fabulous meal and a great time!

Good food here but still doesn't measure up to the price.  Does hit the spot and would definitely go back but wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.

Had a few items from the menu but still miss Mexican food back home.

Strong suggestions:  Fajitas looked good. Try something with seafood.

This place is great... if you've got a bottomless wallet....

I don't like mexican food all that much, but I loved the food at this place. They give you salsa and chips for the table, but the guacamole costs $13 extra. They make it at the table, and the spicy guacamole is soooo good and absolutely worth it!

The drinks are so damn tasty, we got the pomegranite mojito, mango mojito, and blood orange margaritas, but at $55 a pitcher... I won't be going there as often as I'd like! The live band that they have there is also really good, I love listening to live music while eating, the place has a very festive feel to it and does get pretty crowded during the evenings.

The service was slow, probably because the place was so busy (it was a Tuesday night) but the staff people were really nice. Besides being completely overpriced, I loved this place!

NOTE: This review is actually for the UWS location. Whoops.

My friends brought me here for my birthday. Many sips of margarita were involved. Thus, forgive me if my memory is a little fuzzy on specifics...

HOWEVER, I remember fresh guacamole being made right in front of me. And anything that's made right in front of you? It tastes better. This is a law that's as reliable as the law of gravity.

I also remember a band singing happy birthday to me...while a Mexican dude proceeded to pour tequila *on me* first (because I didn't see him coming and had no idea what the hell was happening to me) and then down my throat as I opened my mouth and said "yes please!"

The food was tasty as well. From what I could tell, it was a pretty spendy place and I was glad that I have cool friends who don't allow people to pay for their dinner/drinks on their birthday. ;)

Food was ok, not great except the guacamole and my sister had the red snapper which was awesome.  Fairly mild food- i would prefer more spice. Excellent margaritas.

It is very good food, inventive and flavorful, but it's overpriced if you are not super enthusiastic about the atmosphere. Don't get me wrong, I was there to eat and have some serious drinks with two girlfriends, but the mariachi players were omnipresent and LOUD. And the makeout lighting that changes colors, was a little seizure inducing for my taste.  I think I would recommend this for a 1st or 2nd date because if the date is faltering you can talk about everything that is going on around you.

That said, the servers did not rush us when they realized the girls were catching up and in "why yes! I will have another Negro Modelo!" mode. The pomegranate mojitos were also very yummy. I'd go again, but it's not my first choice for ambience.

Recommended by the staff at the hotel we were staying out we embarked on the 2 block walk to get some chow.

What we were expecting:  Good and decently priced Mexican Food....

What we recieved:  The restaurant is cute inside with vibrant colors and a little Sun Room type area in the back.  I could immediately tell this wasn't your typical Mexican Restaurant.  Immediately after we sat down we were asked if we wanted Guacamole (we were unsure if it was complimentary...).  They made it table side and it was very very tasty.  The Salsa and chips were also good.  Upon further review of the menu I could tell that Guacamole was $13 (quite pricey for what you get if you ask me).  I was surprised at the prices that they were charging for the dishes, ridiculous if you ask me to spend $19 on lunch for Fajitas or the like...

Once we recieved our food all was well until I spotted something in my friends Burrito...it was a HAIR! (the funniest part is that all the employees I could SEE were wearing HAIRNETS!).  Well that was very unpleasant and soured the entire meal for all of us, particuarly the friend who's food had the hair.  We quickly asked for the check (which we were not comped anyting at all, but given a rather unenthusiastic apology).

Overall I wouldn't recommend this place, unless you have money to blow and don't really care what you want to eat....
