Ice cream shops are commonly generic places anymore, with nearly-identical flavor offerings that, while reliable, border on the mundane. Mallard is an ice cream shop that, if it were the animal of its namesake, looks (mostly) like a duck, acts like a duck, but tastes nothing like other ducks.
There are over a dozen flavor options that include the run-of-the-mill but also tend towards the exotic. Vanilla Black Pepper, anyone?
To be honest, I haven't ventured around the menu too much, I tried the vanilla black pepper ice cream on my first visit and found it hard to tear myself away since. Cappuccino is true to flavor, if a little on the almost-too-much-sugar-in-my-coffee side.
I've saved room for Mallard Ice Cream in summer, but I've also snuck out from a bar in the middle of November for a cone. You'll find a line snaking towards the door at both times and you'll scrounge around for change when you're at the counter and have forgotten it's cash-only. Borrow, beg, or barter (if you can) for Mallard ice cream. It's worth it.
I sorta wish Mallard's was in Portland. I mostly don't though, because if it was in Portland there would be a never ending line, and Portland might corrupt it.
There's a family friendly innocence to this place. It's a place where the young and old can gather together for some delicious scoops of ice cream or dairy-free delights.
Mallard's has fun colorful walls, chairs, and decor. The employees are eager to give you a sample and suggestions. Their is an abundance of dairy-free options on the right side of the board, and a bounty of unique flavors. They have Basil ice cream for crying out loud.
If you're being indecisive you can get the 'indecision' scoop, which is two half scoops of two different flavors. I think that's the way to go.
The prices are good, but it's cash or check only.
Close your eyes and imagine a most spacious Molly Moon's with ... hold onto your pants ... NO LINE. Could this be heaven?
Mallards (which I am prone to calling O'Malley's on occasion) has established themselves as a go-to family and college campus friendly ice-cream shop with more unique flavors than a box of Crayolas.
Vanilla Black Pepper sounds off-the-rocker crazy but surprisingly, a delicious pairing. But I could never get into any flavors that tasted like flowers (rose/lavender) - too weird even for me. Plenty of places to sit and play games too!
I asked what the most popular flavor was. She rattled off some name and all I heard was "coconut." I don't really love coconut, but I felt like I had to order it since I asked. It turned out that I got the Coconut Chocolate Chunk with Almonds. It was DELICIOUS. It makes me want to give coconut another go. We grabbed a table and tested our trivia knowledge for the two minutes it took me to inhale that yummy coconut ice cream. If I'm ever in Bellingham again, I'm going back for more.
I had a delightful root beer float. Love the decor in here and the open-air facade all open to the sidewalk. Great place to make a pit-stop with the fam.
Warning: there are lots of little kids in here all the time. I'd check your seat before you plop down - there could be the aftermath of a 3-year-old's first ice cream cone.
How to do Mallards:
1. Make sure you have cash or check. They don't take credit.
2. Make sure you bring a friend. They will need to hold your cone while you pay. Or, so that you can hold their cone while they pay.
3. While waiting in line, try to decide amongst all the amazing, ever-changing choices before you get to the front so as to not drive the salivating folks behind you crazy.
-If served that day, I recommend the raspberry mint. Heaven!
-Although the cardamom is great.
-And so was mint oreo.
-They also have rose and lavender flavors too
4. Order your ice cream in a cup or a cone, your choice.
5. Find a clean spot to sit.
6. Grab a box of trivia
7. Challenge your friend trivia questions whilst eating delicious delicious ice cream.
8. Clean your table and throw your napkin in the food recycling bin and not the trash.
And there you have it. A successfully delicious visit to Mallards.
Dear sweet baby Jesus. Words...can't...describe...should've...sent...a... POET!
Who needs a body-mass index when you have blueberry ice, chocolate lapsang souchong, or basil ice cream?
We make the drive up to Bellingham to get our Mallard's fix at *least* once a month. So should you.
Im a big Malard fan....these folks have done the "local ice cream shop" justice great friendly staff, really great ice cream in all the standard and a lot of very non-standard flavors....
My favorite combo an indecision cone with vanilla black pepper and chili lime....
If they have grapefruit ice..forget everything else!
A++++++ SO, driving from Vancouver to Seattle on my vacation, I decided that I needed ice cream. I randomly chose this place using my GPS and was beyond surprised when I got there. It was this cute shop that had a gi-normous sign over it with the name "Mallard." I almost fell on the floor when I saw that they had "mint-oreo" ice cream, because I can never find it anywhere! The ice cream was beyond delicious and pretty cheap (especially considering the quality of the product). The only thing you need to know is that they only take cash or check!
Two years ago my youngest son and I were in Everson enjoying the Fall Fruit Festival at Cloud Mountain Nursery. This is the first time my taste buds collided with a scoop of luscious Mallard Ice Cream.
Mallard goes out on a limb to make unique-flavored ice creams. What prompted me to try their ice cream (which were being served at a portable ice cream stand) was having just sampled a wonderful grape variety called the Lynden Blue dessert grape, and it happened to be on Mallard's ice cream menu. Wow! I thought, I never tasted grape ice cream, I'll bet it's pretty tasty!
That was an understatement! Both my son and I both agreed Lynden Blue ice cream was the best ice cream we ever tasted...and that's saying lots!
Since then I've driven up from Arlington to Bellingham hoping to find Lynden Blue again. Even though we haven't found Lynden Blue in stock we did try out a few of Mallard's other flavors including Peach, Rose, Cardamom, and Coconut Chocolate Chunk with Almonds.
The Rose and Cardamom ice cream flavors were wonderful, the Peach ice cream was luscious, and my only complaint was the Coconut Chocolate Chunk with Almonds really didn't have any almonds (at least in the scoop I had.)
The ice cream is pricey but I guess considering that you can't get those tasty flavors anywhere else, that the price is worth admission, at least for special occasions.
Here are a few hints I'd like to pass on to Mallard. I'd like to see Mallard offer organic ice creams in the future and also a Green Gage Plum ice cream (or Goose Berry Ice Cream.) I will definitely patronize Mallard's next time I'm in Bellingham.
Mallard is a great creamery with fresh made ice cream
The company is environmentally conscious with great and some unusual flavors.
I had the Vanilla pepper,It tasted how it sounds. It consist of Madagascar vanilla and black pepper, that tasted delicious.
It was placed on a waffle cone that was mediocre for a waffle cone. Waffle cones are usually the best thing since ice cream but overall great place!
Great place to hang out and enjoy ice cream!! They have unusual, interesting flavors that you won't find anywhere else. Served in glass dishes (like in the 50's - 60's diner style), where you can relax and enjoy your dessert/snack at any of the tables or couches. There's also a fireplace you can sit in front of and enjoy. You can play board games like Scrabble!, Pictionary, etc.
Awesome place to just hang out with friends/family and enjoy delicious ice cream.
Mallard's IS Bellingham. Where else can you get Avocado or Green Tea ice cream? Dairy Creme and Cold Stone have their place, but if you're looking for an ice cream experience, then Mallard's is where it's at. The flavors are a little off the wall, but I think everyone will be able to find something they like here. The vibe is relaxed and comfortable for couples and families alike with the board games and fun furniture. As a bonus, they're open late for that moonlight craving. Bring your dollars cuz they don't take the plastic stuff here. I would definitely recommend them as a place to take your out-of-towners. Mallard's Rocks!
P.S. The Avocado... Outstanding
I had the cinnamon ice cream here. (Sinnamon? ahh, so long ago) It was life-changing.
This is one more reason that I need to go to Bellingham again. From the east coast.
Wow! First, they are awesome because they have homemade, environmentally friendly ice cream. Second, they are awesome because they have a stunning amount of flavors available. Third, they are awesome because every single ice cream flavor I try there is incredibly delicious.
I like to make ice cream so I really respect all the creativity and passion and tastiness Mallard's puts into their ice cream. It's a great place.
Plus! The Indecision Scoop is the best idea known to man!
Also, it's a wonderful spot to just sit and chat, or people-watch or play board games.
The best thing about having a sister who loves finding unique places for food is that, when I visit, I get to reap all of the benefits. In this case, she frequents an ice cream place called Mallard Ice Cream, which houses a variety of interesting flavors that you're not going to find at many other places. In a daring attempt to stray from my ordinary flavor choices, I tried out the basil ice cream. Surprisingly, that stuff was pretty good. I don't think I could imagine consuming an entire scoop of it, but it was good to try. While I wanted to test drive a few more flavors, I could tell that the chick at the counter was over me, so I just ordered the coconut chocolate chunk with almonds. That was some dang good ice cream in a dang good waffle cone. I just wish that I had more room in my stomach to sample some other flavors...they had some gooders for sure.
I decided to get a t-shirt...very nice, even though it was friggin' $20. But I guess it was an American Apparel shirt, so it was worth it. The only bad thing is that they only accept cash and checks, and when I got out my check book, my sister told me that they only accept local checks...great. Fortunately, my mom and sister came to my rescue to help me get my t-shirt. The set-up of the place is really nice and open, and unfortunately I noticed too late that they have a bookshelf full of games. It seems like a nice change from the starbucks down the street as a hang out place. Mmm...I'm not the biggest ice cream eater, but Mallard's does it right...and in an out of the ordinary way.
Oh Mallards, how I miss thee! This is the only ice cream shop I have ever been to that had Basil and Cardamom ice cream. I had this five years ago and I still think about it. Seriously!
I have been known - on occasion - to get two or three cones per visit.
Sample a few types and then definitely go for a double scoop cone combining two complimentary flavors.
You shan't be disappointed.
Earl Grey Tea ice cream. It's like tea with the Queen of England without the insufferable company.
Basil Ice Cream.
It's my frozen dairy nirvana.
If you have not been to Mallards, Stop. Reading. And. Go. Now.
That's all I have to say to you people.
We stopped in on Valentine's Day to grab some dessert. I loved the atmosphere (reminded me a lot of a hometown favorite) and had a hard time choosing from all of the unique flavors they had on hand. I went for a good old standby, butter pecan, and Joel grabbed the green tea. I think I got the better end of the deal, but Joel manged to polish his off as well.
Let me preface this review by stating that my adoration for Bellingham in general shall be of influential and bias impact on my critique.
Where in the world is Carmen SanDiego? Here, with all of the other strange genius that opted out of a polluted big city life.
A couple years ago, I dreamt of a place where you could meet a mensa membered eco-activist, highly successful entrepreneur and published poet, who got her start modeling with Elite® AND spoon down a cup of Earl Grey icecream after motorcycling back from a long day rope swing back flipping into the lake... ... and here the fuck it is.
5 star flavors Sir Mallard. You've been knighted.
Locally sourced dairy not treated with rBST and as far as I know some decent non-chemically sugar.
Eat Well!
The X
Mallard Ice Cream opened up during my senior year at WWU. Everyone was so excited - myself included. Then I had some of their ice cream and could not see what the hype was about.
Fast forward ten years (egads, ten years???) and I find myself in Bellingham on a sunny day and happily skipped into Mallard ice cream. Oooooh so excited!!! We ordered a peach cheesecake ice cream that was kinda grainy, vanilla pepper ice cream which was mildly interesting, and a coffee ice cream that tasted like coffee grounds.
I guess you can say I still don't understand the hype.
I used to think Ice cream was just ice cream. That the stuff from the grocery freezer was the same as at a parlor. Well, I was dead wrong and have since discovered they are about as equivalent as store bought cookies and home-made. Mallard's is gourmet, fresh, small-batch ice cream that is made daily and comes in a variety of rotating flavors. Everyday there is a new flavor to try, some traditional and some experimental flavor combinations.
Flavors I've seen:
Lemon Liberation
Pumpkin
Peppermint
Apple Pie
Cardamom
Chili Lime
Tamarind
Banana Chocolate Chunk
Coconut Almond Chocolate Chunk
Peanut butter Cup
Mint Cookie
Cookies 'n' Cream
Super Chocolate Chunk
Rootbeer
Balsamic Strawberry
Rose
Blueberry Cheesecake
Mocha Chip
Black Pepper
They are open late, the service is great, and there are plenty of board games to grab and play with some friends.
This is hands-down the coolest & most unconventional ice-cream place I have ever patronized. The flavor combinations are really, really odd but have always proven to be bold and very tasty. These are the kind of tasty risks that only small, locally owned places can perfect when not encumbered by market research and the drive for widespread marketability. If you from the area, visiting or passing through this should be on your short list of things to sample in the Bellingham area.
Oh Mallard's, how do I love thee....
I LOOOOOOVE ice cream and let me tell you, this is some fantastic ice cream! They use as much local, fresh, in season and organic ingredients as they can. Just be prepared that they won't always have the same flavors every time you go in. Some of the flavors are very different and unique, so make sure you get a few samples when you go. Also, as others have said, BRING CASH! You have been warned, so no excuses for whining that they didn't take your debit card.
I love the new location, its a fun place to hang out with friends and must go-to-place to bring your out of town guests. You know the ice cream must be good when they have a line out the front door on a weeknight in the middle of winter.
FYI: The cheesecake ice creams are super rich and creamy....mmmmm
In my Heaven they serve Mallard ice cream!!
Not only does Mallard's create amazing ice cream, they also make to-die-for ices. Black & Blue (Blackberries & Blueberries) is my favorite. And the Sinamon (yes I spelled it right) ice cream is perfection. Everything is made in the shop and varies depending on what is in season. Mmm. The shop itself is darling and they have a shelf full of my favorite childhood games. Connect 4 anyone?
A trip to Bellingham isn't complete without a stop at Mallard's.
Good, but overpriced sorry
My lactose hating girlfriend wanted to stop here because she read they had better than the usual, tasteless, opt-out sherbet. And boy did they. Their Italian ice ginger, lemon, and tea was delightfully tart and tasty.
The bulk of the lactosians present seemed quite content as well, munching down on such bizarre renditions as licorice, cinnamon, and whatever vanilla and pepper might be. An odd place, indeed.
Mallards is basically a MUST for anyone who steps into Bellingaham.
You may try some of the safe flavors, but why not get out of your shell and try some of the adventurous flavors... you'll probably be surprised!
For having a lot of really great food, I have so far found Seattle lacking in a great ice cream place. You know what I'm talking about, the kind of ice creamery where they make the stuff on site, and it's just irresistibly good. The Pinkberry-like yogurt revolution has hit the city, and I guess if you're really desperate, you can visit Coldstone (though it'll practically cost you your arm and a leg) but if you really want that walk-down-the-street-with-my-homemade-cone-of-good ness you just can't find it.
Until you drive an hour and a half north to Mallard Ice Cream in Bellingham! OMG, this stuff is amazing...I actually had to turn around at the threshold to get a second cone during my first visit to the shop on my way to Canada. (I mean, coconut chocolate chunk and blueberry ice cream - two separate flavors - do I need to say any more? Fine, I will: soooo amazing.) The next day when I was returning, I couldn't resist stopping by Bellingham again (it's on the way anyway, right?) -- and the ice cream scooper actually provided me with a box and a bag of ice to transport several hand-packed pints home with me! Yep, that's right, I drove pints of ice cream back an hour and a half.
I'll say that the post-Mallard, at-home experience is not as good as that just-scooped ice cream with fresh waffle cone treat in Bellingham, but, hey, I guess it'll drive traffic up there! (If you go there, you may just find yourself considering a 90 minute drive for ice cream) Plus the in-shop environment is really snazzy, complete with board games.
Apparently they've received a lot of requests for expansion into a Seattle branch - I really, really, really hope it happens! (If you're the owner and reading this, please? Pretty please? With fudge and a cherry on top?)
I love love ice cream And this is my favorite ice cream place! what more is there to say?
They make their own and they have fun flavors like rose, cardamon, my favorites are hazelnut and chocolate, coconut and almond chunk, hum I'm getting hungry just thinking about this. I get the Indecision cone, so I can get half and half. Yum!
Next time I get up to bham I'm bringing some home. There is nothing like it!
There's ice cream, and then there's pure deliciousness served in a waffle cone. Mallard's is the latter.
The base ice cream is good, but not out of this world if you've had Blue Bell or the like. Where Mallard's sticks out is the flavors. I'd give them credit just for trying some of the zanier stuff they have on the menu (pepper, lavender, cheesecake, chai, etc...) but it's the fact that I've enjoyed every one of the bizarre varieties that I've tried that makes me love this place. Somehow, they manage to pick out the best parts of the idea of a flavor and turn that abstracted notion into a fantastic reality. A delicious, fantastic reality... in a waffle cone.
No road trip between Seattle and Vancouver is complete without a stop at Mallard's. This place just has terrific Ice Cream. I could try to write a lengthy review, but what would I say?
If you like Ice Cream (a big "if," I know) then you will LOVE Mallard's.
As other reviewers point out they have some pretty crazy ice cream varieties here. My favorite exotic blend is cardamom. Don't worry though, they've got the fundamentals masters. Vanilla and chocolate are staples and they are some of the best examples of these standards you'll ever try. My favorite flavors are the cheesecake varieties with Lemon Cheesecake being tops. The people working there are great and they know how to make a darn good Americano using local Moka Joe coffee if you're in need of something hot.
The fat content of their ice cream is really quite high which gives their product its luxurious taste. One scoop every once in a while won't kill you though so stop on in and have a taste. Ice cream doesn't get any better than this.
If you like ice cream, you're guaranteed to like Mallard's. Situated on Railroad avenue, around the corner for its original location, Mallard's is right downtown and a perfect stop after a Saturday trip to the Farmer's Market. Fresh-made ice cream, local ingredients, and a welcoming environment (stay as long as you'd like, play cards/board games with friends) - what more could you ask for in an ice cream shop?
They have a rotating menu and along with some standard chocolate/vanilla/strawberry flavors, you can find delightful concoctions such as jalepeno lime and lavender. My personal favorite is grapefruit ice, but it's only offered for a brief time in the spring
.
Here's a list of some of the flavors offered randomly at any given time. I'm sure I've forgotten several.
Super Vanilla
EspressoAdzuki Bean
Vanilla Chocolate Chunk
Raspberry
Super Chocolate Chunk
Chocolate
Lime
Chocolate Almond
Licorice
Black Pepper
White Russian
Coconut Chocolate Chunk with Almonds
Strawberry Rhubarb
Grapefruit Ice
Rose
Cardamom

Cookies & Cream
Mocha
Root Beer
Strawberry Peach Ice
Coconut Flake Ice
Mint Oreo
Hazlenut
Basil
Jalapeno Lime
Lemon Liberation
Raspberry Lemonade
Apricot Ice
This is a cool place to hang out. Kind of a space age feel to it, with all the modern furniture. Board games play. You can sit by the fire in the winter or they roll up their big garage type doors in the summer. Short kiddie sinks for the little ones.
Interesting flavors in ice cream. I hear the rose ice is incredible but I'm not one for eating flowers. I go for anything chocolate. I like the chocolate oreo mint but they've only had that one of the times I've been in. I have a hard time consistently finding a flavor I like. That is why I don't go there more often.
Mallard is a true local treasure. Top shelf ingredients and friendly staff make any visit to Mallard a treat.
Do you like Ice Cream? check.
Have you tried Cayenne Pepper Chocolate Chunk? NO!?
Then come to Mallards, in their funky new location they have more space to sit and play chutes and ladders, or read the paper. Get a cone, get a 2 scoop bowl. Take home a pint or two. Sample some of the recent creations. You will rarely be able to experience an ice cream establishment as unique as this one. They make concoctions that are both imaginative and delicious. They have a constantly changing and updated menu.
Heaven for me is a two scoop sundae from Mallard's with Earl Grey and lavender ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream, and a cherry!
Try to avoid nights when kids come here after their little games or whatever. There's a lot of bumping and screaming, and not in a good way.
Bring cash or cheque; they don't take cards. But it's worth a trip to the ATM.
They're open 'til eleven in the summer! Cheers to late-night ice cream.
