So you're here... in Malibu, and you're looking for a bite to eat that isn't A) a fast food chain or B) a sit-down money pit. Congratulations! Because if you're in the Malibu Mart area, you're pretty much in one of two locations where finding such a meal is possible (the other being where Lily's Cafe is next to Von's). In the mood for a burger as opposed to the Mexican offered at Howdy's? Malibu Mutt it is.
Star 1 - How was the service and atmosphere?
Especially for being in Malibu, Mutt is about as simple as it gets. Walk up to the counter, place your order, pay and wait. The first glaring issue is that Mutt is cash only. Seriously? What century are we in? Especially in Malibu, where you pay a premium for absolutely everything, you'd think that Mutt's relatively pricey menu would warrant a credit card machine. Besides that, the service is quick. Star Granted.
Star 2 - How were the portions relative to the cost?
Opting to go with the Western Burger ($8.95 before tax) and a Chocolate Milkshake ($4.25 before tax), I was pleased to see that my burger was of a decent size:
http://www.yelp.com/us...
As you can see, the burger is decent, it came packed with a good and fresh patty, and I left full for under $15. Yes, the milkshake was overpriced, but it wasn't enough to warrant the loss of a star. By Malibu standards, Mutt is acceptable in the value department if you want to eat out. Star Granted.
Stars 3/4 - How was the food?
Meh. My burger was good, but honestly nothing special. While I appreciated the fresh ingredients, I wished I was on the other side of the canyon where my $10 could fetch me a beast of a burger virtually anywhere. Additionally, the milkshake was disappointing, and was very clearly made with Hershey Syrup. Single Star Granted.
Star 5 - Would you eat it every day if you could?
Unless you're good and ready for some fancy dining at a cost, Malibu is really a case of pick your poison when it comes to eating out. Outside of chains, (and it should be noted that nearby La Salsa isn't a bad option by any means) the options are typically just shy of that $10 meal range, and as a result I can't honestly say I've ever given this star to a Malibu location. Want to enjoy a meal in Malibu? Go to Ralphs, grab some goodies, and picnic out on the beach. No Star Granted. -

The open air shopping center here at Country Mart Malibu is cute and a fun place to go with children (let them run wild etc). Luckily for us, there is this tasty window joint nearby. I highly recommend the falafel sandwich, mom had the falafel salad and gave it a thumbs up. My sister had the C.A. sandwich from the place next door (Jack's?). That was tasty too, from the avocado I tasted. This place was fairly reasonable price wise too. That is a concern after the gas it must have taken us on Los Virgenes and Kanan rd. to get over here (great drives, btw, highly recommend). Enjoy!

The hubs eats here every time we come to the Mart. He always gets a burger and fries. He eats the burger and I eat the fries. All in all, it is pretty tasty. I was kind of bummed today when I saw that they had a "B" rating from the health department. Darn it!

The Malibu Mutt was just OK. I read a few of the other reviews saying things like, "well, it's cheap for Malibu." I can't really base my review on that since I don't live there. I live in L.A. Sure, it might have been cheap for Malibu, but a burger and drink cost me $10, which is nearly the same price as gourmet burger places like The Counter and 8 oz. Burger Bar. I can't rationalize spending that much on what basically boils down to a good fast food burger. If you're in the area and want a burger, this place is good. Not mind blowing in any way. The best part for me was the scenery. The shopping center is beautiful and definitely something to check out if you haven't.

I'd give it a 3.5 stars, but I can't.
Malibu is expensive so finding ANYTHING under $10 is tough.
I heard the falafel sandwich was good here so I tried it. Not bad...smothered with sauce. It's cheaper for Malibu standards, but not that cheap.
My wife got the tuna melt, which was average to me.
I really like the area (Malibu Country Mart).
Unfortunately, Malibu and Pacific Palisades people just don't have many places to choose from when it comes to cheap eats. -

They had to raise their prices when their rent went up but i'm not bitter.
I love their falafell and their turkey burgers.
I often find myself customizing their menu for me which is really annoying for them but they're super nice about it.
Can't go wrong with some mutts. -

Classic Malibu wallk up, been going here basically since I learned how to walk, probably longer. When I was a kid I would often get a hot dog from here and play in the playground. Nowadays its all about the double burger or the falafel. Cheese fries are a must. If you call in your order, its seriously ready in 5 mins.

based solely on its simplicity and the dichotomy it holds compared to its surroundings, i like this place. in the middle of this trendy star studded country mart playing the part of a simple town square in an otherwise opulent and lavish malibu community sits this burger stand.
ok, maybe burger stand is simplifying it a bit. they have a slew of burgers, chicken sandwiches, melts, falafels and even chicken teriyaki dishes. but nothing fancy. no "blackened on a bed of" this. no "roasted with balsamic vinegar" that. and absolutely no goat cheese to be found anywhere. it's just simple, hearty, hot and juicy stuff.
are these the best hamburgers in the world? no, nor do they claim to be. but it's all made fresh to order with crisp lettuce, thick slices of tomatoes and onions on a whole wheat bun (this is malibu after all). the burger looks perfect and is crafted together nicely unlike any other greasy spoon that just slaps stuff unevenly on a bun. all held together with a wooden spear through the middle so it won't fall apart as you dodge little pomeranians with versace collars on your way to a table.
i like their french (freedom) fries cuz they're not skinny fries like, say mcdonalds, but they're not the thick cut steak fries either. and the kitchen is small enough where they fry them up constantly so you usually end up with a piping hot batch.
you order at a window and your food comes out to you through another window. it's a like a roach coach without wheels. where else in malibu can you roll up and get a quick bite to eat without being asked if you want flat or sparkling water? remember though, this place is quite possibly the only store in malibu that doesn't take american express (or any plastic for that matter).
the country mart has a big parking lot out back but you'll have to fight for spaces on the weekends between the harley-davidsons, the bentleys and range rovers and the occasional armored suburban with governor schwarzenegger (who i've seen at the country mart, twice)
and all the while, you sit in the quaint little park surrounded by boutique stores as you eat at a picnic table next to some movie star wearing a cap and sunglasses trying to get their bratty undisciplined 4 year old to stop screaming. but you don't care cuz you're off in burger heaven secretly laughing inside at these new money idiots who litter the socal landscape. -

In all fairness it has been like 10 years since I have had this place but I can still remember their falafel like it was yesterday.

my five stars are for the falafal sandwich...with cheese and extra sauce. not exactly the most authentic but SO damn good. in fact my boss just hit me up to go there RIGHT NOW (yay!!!) so to hell with watching what i eat i'm gettin my 3 falafal patties, extra sauce, tomoatoes, cabbage & cheese wrapped in a pita. oh yeah, i can taste it now!
also:
they only take cash
it's a walk up order window set up
the seating is outdoor only
parking can get a little nuts at lunch time, especially when the weather is nice
the location is great for people watching -

OOoh Man, if you're craving a good burger, go to Malibu Mutt! There was a little bit of a wait, but when I got my food, I can see why. They take their time making a good burger for you! They don't just throw it together- they use good quality ingredients and you can tell it's all fresh. The fries are nice too! My favorite type of fry, a steak fry...not too thin (or wimpy), and not a huge fat wedge either....just perfectly done and salted. We took them to go and ate them at the beach across the street.

Even though I proudly advertise myself as a carnivore, I tried the veggie burger here just to try something different, and WOW it was really good. Expensive yes, but also good. It's a local Malibu establishment, so if you want cheap, there's a Jack just down the road. Their burgers and wraps are really good also, and I recommend the veggie burger, or any burger for that matter.

The burger was good, but not worth the price. Granted, I got a regular cheeseburger, I think I could get something just as good at a regular fast food joint. Based on these reviews, I expected a lot more! I could probably get the same quality burger for cheaper elsewhere.
