this is where i'm getting married - i'll hire my own bartender tho.
love the rooms and the views
My b/f and I go there every other month for a day or two to escape El Lay. It's only 45 min drive but you feel like in some other world. I love falling asleep and waking up to the cracking sound of the waves.
The rooms are very cosy, with a fireplace and ocean front balconies. I find their robes the best among the hotels - very lightweight and soft
.
Breakfast on the patio is my fav, so relaxing. But I must agree with the other reviewer that it is very crapy!!! They should definitely change the chef. Scrambled eggs are aweful. So I stick to the salmon and bagel. I really wish their menu was more healthy. The chicken breast dinner was over grilled, therefore dry! Yucky! Drinks suck! Fortunately there are some other places around to eat, although I would really like to just stay at the hotel and eat because it's a great place to hang out.
I have no idea what swimming pool the other yelper was talking about. They don't have one. They also don't have a gym which suck. But if you pay ( i think $20) you get a 24h access to the gum across the deadly fast PH 1. Yeah, I should mention that it's very dangerous to merge the traffic coming out from the hotel. The driveway doesn't have a clear view, so you always risk your life.
The stuff is pretty nice, I noticed it has changed a bit because it was very corporate and fake when we first stayed there. I still wish they were more laid back and fun!

Life on the beach in Malibu for me is... nothing "ultra special" to me, so I think I have a bit more of an honest opinion than any of those awed by a view and a nice bed.
The Resturant- You could waste your money and time with crap food and poorly mixed drinks OR, you could go across the street to Charlie's. Charlie's is Malibu's latest cool-spot for well priced, good food. Everyone is SO nice and helpful, and the food is amazing!
The Hotel- Again, not awed by the view. All things aside, you pay for decor, and little "Molton Brown" soaps- which seem to be in exchange for quality and timely service. The rooms are nice, but overpriced for what they are. Don't bother with the food (see above). Other than that, have a nice stay!

Love it. The rooms are not excessive or huge, and given the land they had to work with, I find the results very impressive. The rooms are neutral calming soothing getaway from it all comfy. You will not find a better hotel in this area. It is modern and tasteful. Get it straight, you come here for the view. First perhaps the others writing here should be positive they booked a room with a view, because hello, only so much of the hotel can face the water.. Then you check your attitude at the door, people don't owe you anything luvs,
I found the service to be amazing, not only were we greeted personally, she took us to the room and showed us everything. They were friendly, polite and quite accommodating.
You come for the view, you stay for the sunset, you turn on your fireplace, you have late night rendezvous on your balcony, your front yard is now the Pacific Ocean.
What's not to love?

I have stayed here a few times and I just luv this place. The rooms are super clean, very trendy and modern. The views of the ocean are to die for. The staff and service are outstanding...just as good, if not better than the Ritz and 4 Seasons.
I cannot think of another hotel, boutique or full service that is as romantic as this one.
When you arrive, you just want stay in bed, fuck all night and watch the sun rise...........

I was apprehensive about staying at the Malibu Beach Inn but realized that the things people complained about in the reviews were not an issue for me. I LOVED IT!
PROS - This is a great place to stay if you have transportation, don't eat at hotel restaurants, notify MBI in advance of special occasions so they can plan accordingly, plan your own travel itinerary, not interested in water activities, don't like to lay out by the pool or work out while on vacation and are not Cali natives. MBI provides concierge services via iPod Touch. This was perfect for me because I left my laptop at home and don't own an iPhone. MBI is a great romantic getaway for couples who know how to make their own fun or want to stay in. For those who can appreciate a nice art deco room with a view this is the place for you. I was very pleased with the room and the price. The W was in the same price range; however, the room was smaller, there's no fireplace, balcony or ocean.
CONS - MBI may not be the PERFECT place for GRAND occasions (i.e., wedding anniversaries, wedding proposals, hotel room parties, etc.) Nor is this the venue to be spoiled by hotel staff. Most hotel restaurants aren't that great, so no surprise here. If you are one of those who want it when you want it and how you want it and you don't have time or too impatient to figure it out, you may want to try another place that specializes in that level of service.
Budget Travelers - Take advantage of low room rates on Sunday - Thursday. Pick up dinner and a bottle of wine and enjoy a sunset dinner on the balcony or beach if you like. Purchase your drink of choice and chasers a block away because the bar has the most popular premium liquors. Malibu law requires valet parking so be prepared to pay.
Want It All Folks Who Choose to Book Anyway - Gym buffs, take a yoga class or weight train at the brand new establishment across the street. If you are interested in swimming or surfing take a drive a few miles down to Venice Beach where everyone else is doing the same thing. If you want a fine dining experience or would like to enjoy good seafood with the Malibu natives there's several places a few miles from MBI.
The good? Location! The hotel is just yards from the water and the elevated patio at the hotel's rear puts you practically over the water. The rooms are well-appointed (the fireplace was especially welcome the near-freezing evening we stayed), comfortable, and offer spectacular views of the Pacific. The Inn is also just a block or so away from Nobu which we had Sat. night reservations for.
Also dug the iPod touch that serves as an electronic concierge of sorts, allowing guests to instantly order room service, request amenities, make reservations at local restaurants, request a wake-up call, and provide free internet access. (I'm hearing impaired, so not having to use a phone for these simple services was a huge bonus.)
The mediocre? The front desk staff was efficient, but they weren't particularly friendly. Not rude necessarily, but definitely a but apathetic. Also, upon making reservations, we were asked which magazines we wanted available to us in our room upon arrival. The copy of Esquire we requested never arrived.
The bad? Ordered a pot of coffee on morning of checkout and it took an hour to travel a single floor. Also was disappointed that there was a built-in charge for valet when the cars are literally parked within feet of the entrance. I was more than happy to leave a large tip for the friendly valet, but charging $20+ (on top of the $350 room) for the guy to move it 10 yards is kinda ridiculous.
Would I stay here again? YES, although at a slightly cheaper rate. Its proximity to Nobu and the water make it an ideal getaway destination and serves as a pretty perfect launching-off point for a leisurely drive south on PCH.

Probably one of my most favorite places I've ever stayed. Depending on the season, room prices can be really pricey but the views and the quality of service along with the whole look of the place are unbeatable. The rooms are spacious and very modern and the in room dining was delicious, I've only had breakfast there though.
Try and call a month a head of time to try and get a better rate.
They remodeled the place, it looks good, but be prepared for some insane prices and extremely mediocre food.
Here is a hint:
$8 - valet parking
$14 - mojito
$4 - iced tea
$17 - tasteless chicken sandwich on sponge bread
$18 - mediocre burger (ordered medium - served well done) w/ dry cold fries
$28 - grilled salmon
Those were at lunch, so for dinner you may pay even more.
I may go back there one day for a coffee on the terrace, but forget about the food!

Buyer Beware!
This hotel has a sewage problem. It also does not cater to luxury clients but charges like a luxury business. Not that money was an issue, but I spend a lot of time on the road and this hotel was NOT comfortable. The manager, alan and jennifer were rude and did not listen to my request - basically told me to stay somewhere else next time I travelled through Malibu. Next time I will stay at Shutters OR Casa Malibu (is not 5 star and does not pretend to be but the location is great). The food was not delicious and the lettuce was not fresh. DONT STAY HERE!

OK so it's Malibu and Malibu is like no other place on earth. If you need a place to stay in town this is it...It's quaint and is RIGHT on the beach. Call ahead and ask for the tide schedule they will have it for you. The whole hotel has been renovated since GEFFEN bought the hotel. The bummer part is that the beach in front has eroded so there isn't much sand. Just walk a little over to surfrider or carbon beach and you can have more sand there. In front of the hotel they will set you up with chairs and beach service of drinks etc...YUM!
The rooms are OK very nicely done but overpriced again it's Malibu what do you expect...
It's a great place to be I lived here as a kid and enjoyed every second and one day I'll be back places to visit and sightsee under the radar...You'll always be able to see someone at Cross Creek the stars bring their kids there to play. It's super cute there with the little park and shops etc...It's the famous Starbucks where the paparazzi hang out. Where your big Sunglasses and act aloof maybe they will think you are someone you aren't!!!

Sometimes true escape can only come from within. Within city limits, that is. David Geffen has taken on the re-imagining the Malibu Beach Inn, so I've been told. Okay, I'm so behind on this one because apparently it took place in 2007, but it really isn't that important. What is important to know is that the Malibu Beach Inn is the only luxury resort between Santa Monica and Santa Barbara, plus it sits right on Carbon Beach. Hello! Celebs, big beautiful beach homes, wealthy people and hot bodies everywhere. Truth be told, I was just happy to see that the prior incarnation's pink-and-teal motif has thankfully been put to rest. This place is great for a quick weekend get away to recharge, refresh and revitalize from the hustle and bustle that LA can be sometimes. Trust me, a nice beach front room, waves crashing at your feet, crystal clear swimming pool, 24seven room service, good drinks and eat, plus all the perks of being at the beach makes the Inn in!

Spoke to director of Bev. what a jerk doesn't seem qualified to help anyone let alone his guest.. He sounds like he wants to be from Malibu but didn't learn any manner from his home town of England. You need more than an accent to get into a town like Malibu you need good manner and an easy way about you..So go back to England.
there are other hotels to stay at where people are warm friendly and want to make their guest happy.

We stayed here on a recent business trip because it was basically the only non-motel location we could find in Malibu. It looked good on the website, and a luxury stay on the beach seemed worth the splurge. How wrong that was. We paid $385 for an oceanview queen, which we booked via the phone. Their website lists the price as $425 (they then tried to charge us that rate on checkout, though $385 was clearly on the rate card I'd signed).
They concentrate on offering little luxurious extras to make you feel pampered, and you will PAY for every luxurious extra! the dean and deluca items in the minibar, the trina turk robes, the tiny fiji waters- all are overpriced. The valets are friendly and attentive, but it's $26 for them to park your car 20 feet away. Despite the luxuries, it's missing basic components of a 4 star hotel. They don't even have a pool or fitness center, although they tell you you are welcome to walk across the (very busy) highway and use the one there- for $18! They lack a real espresso machine, and the $7 iced coffee we ordered at the restaurant was just hot coffee with ice cubes in it (which makes the coffee watery. not a big deal, but at $7 and $385/night...) The in-room phones are office phones, not hotel phones, and you can't call room service directly from them. Room service menu is limited and, again, overpriced. They do not leave a tray for you to use to put the plates out in the hall when you're done, and two calls to the desk did not yield an attendant to come pick up the plates. Whoever came in to do the turn didn't even pick up the plates! There is no wireless, only an ethernet cable, and of course the internet isn't free. The lobby is basically the restaurant, and the building materials used for the renovation look cheap. The rooms are nice but tiny.
Charging for the pool was basically the last straw for me, I do not wish to feel nickel-and-dimed at a 4 star location. I think it's erroneous that this location is listed as having a pool. Save your money, stay somewhere nicer in LA for half the price.

smack dab in the middle of chaos better known as Malibu. best part is the waterfront location -- so if you don't mind dodging traffic and tourists star-gazing -- you might like this place.
