I normally don't like modern dance, but I went to go see "Shadow of Mercy" last weekend because my good pals Bernadette and Trystan were performing in it, and they hooked me for 2 for 1 tix for my wife and I. Thanks Friends!
I was honestly blown away! Have I just been watching mediocre and "bad" modern dance this entire time? The partnering work of the 2nd and 3rd pieces blew me away...mental note to self: work on upper body strength! The rest of the choreography was smooth, wellconnected, athletic, and beautiful; wheras most modern dances I've seen typically looks as if the dancers just got jacked up on Redbull, E and acid, then tossed on stage to do whatever they feel like.
The music was interesting and went well with the pieces and lighting; it was not the typical modern dance crazy tribal or gothic "churchy" music, both of which I can't stand. Unfortunately the last piece was "countryish" music, which did not fit with the rest of the show and seemed very out of place; good choreography wasted on a bad piece of music!
Overall, I was very impressed with the entire presentation will definitely be back to see future Malashock shows...maybe even take modern classes after a 9 year haitus...
AMAZING Children's Creative Dance Classes!!!! Molly, the children's dance teacher is endlessly patient, clear, and full of energy. She is the reason we drive all the way to NTC every Saturday for my daughter's creative dance class. This class offers creative movement as well as incorporating ballet, jazz, and other movement styles.
Our daughter started out in the younger class and moved up to the older kids class late last year. She LOVES class and especially Miss Molly!
We highly recommend any of Malashock's dance courses (but, especially the children's classes) 'cause they really are wonderful, creative souls who want to spread the joy of movement and dancing to everyone, or every age. Check them out sometime...they are really good at letting you "try out" a class to see if it works for you (or your child). That is worth a few bucks and peace of mind right there!
http://www.pbase.com/e... --- I saw this performance on Sunday, Stay the Hand. It was a beautiful expression and performance of ancient Persian poetry, contemporaray dance and Persian "techno music." Yes that is right, I know it sounds odd but I was fascinated by Malashock's Production. This is a San Diego based Dance Troupe who practice on NTC. I expect to see more great productions coming from this group.
They did some interesting intepretations of the poetry through dance. The set and the lighting was simple and did not detrack from the dancers.
Minus one star for the North Park theater for not cooling off the theater before the performance. It was very, very hot on Sunday and I was suffering from the heat. I felt badly for all the Senior citizens sitting there, a few of them left due to the heat... The dancers looked a little over heated also but it did not impact their performances.
Beautiful, if they do perform this again, I highly recommend seeing it with an open mind.
Their performances are awesome. I really enjoyed to watch it!
Really great dance performances that is dance and theater combined and there's a fascinating atmosphere.
It's worth to be seen by everyone - young and old.
The choreagraphy of John Malashock is breathtaking and inspiring. I recently attended a preview for their upcoming show, "Shadow of Mercy," and was blown away! I sat wide-eyed, watching the fluid and novel movements of the dancers and enjoyed the music from Leornard Cohen that was their background. I recommend this show for dance enthusiast, as well the voyers who strive to be entertained by something different. Because the choreagraphy is so unique I think that even the non-dancer or dance enthusiast would appreciate a performance from the Malashock Dance Company.
