Newport Beach, CA
My new favorite hangout in Newport. Great pours of Guinness and Smithwick's are enough alone to lure me, but add in darts (!) and I'm sold. That alone, five stars, no question about it.
Besides all that, the ambiance is nice and pubby, bartenders are friendly, the nachos are good (try with jalapeños and guacamole added on) and to top it all off....*drum roll* Tuesday night prime rib for $11. Taco Tuesday doesn't even cross my mind any more, it is all about $11 prime rib at Malarky's.
I can't wait until next--wait, today is Tuesday! This review is long enough right? I'm hungry. Seeya. -

Bummed.
Went back for Sunday Football Brunch and was ignored. Ignored. Ignored. When my plate of breckie finally came, it wasn't bad. But . . . I dunno, after being SPOILED ROTTEN by my girrrrls at Cappy's, I just refuse to put up with shitty service.

Love it! Great specials!
Party scene at night for sure!
Most importantly, stick with the beer. -

Typical bro bar, but they played some ridiculous top 40 pop and I'm sure I would've enjoyed it more if I had a few more drinks beforehand. The thing was...our drinks barely had anything in them. I really think I drank straight 2 cranberry juices instead of cranberry vodkas. Their long islands tasted like dish soap and I felt bad for my friends who had to endure that type of pain for nothing. We left the bar pretty much close to sober...terrible! At least drinks were pretty cheap.

Malarky's has surprisingly become place I frequent on the peninsula, to say the least. From their iconic milk jug beer bottles to the Irish themed decorations, I can't help but love both Fri/Sat nights and eating dinner here. Contrary to my experience with many bar-pub combos, Malarky's' food is excellent, especially the tri-tip, tater tots, and enchiladas. The service, while kind, could use improvement in terms of attentiveness. Specialty libations include dangerously strong long island iced teas, soda waters, and Max shots. Call me a sissy, but I think the drinks here have crossed the line marked "too strong." Sometimes on particularly rowdy Newport nights, an impromptu dancefloor emerges near the jukebox in the corner.

I don't mind this place so much for being in Newport, which some of you may know that I hate. This is usually one of our first stops of the Newpot Beach night because of the location. It is at the beginning of the peninsula.
I've been here on many occasions and it is decent. It gets quite packed on the weekends. They have a dance floor for parking. I guess many peeps here don't follow the No parking on the dance floor song. Yes, I know. Much, much before their times.
Still, shake it up a little. You ain't going to break it since you are a youngster that is not old enough to reminder such an old tune. I can't blame anyone really though for parking their butts on the dance floor since this pub can get extremely cramp.Listed in: You hate clubs and fancy…

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD stick with the beer! Or irish car bombs.
Any other mixed drink BEWARE. they do not know how to mix drinks, and the err to the more alcohol side. And they taste awful. -

$5 burgers on Mondays, $11 Prime Rib Meals on Tuesdays, prime rib sandwiches Wed, tacos/burritos Thursday, $8.95 Rib Eyes on Fridays...you can read their daily specials, but it's pretty good for the surrounding area. I'm not a fan during the night when it's a billion 21 year olds dancing on the dance floor, pushing you out of the way for a shot, but for the quiet times, I'm down. Go for the specials, the quiet times, and you'll be satisfied. Go for the late nights if your close to 21 and trying to meet someone to take home.
Also, one time while eating breakfast on a Saturday morning (they serve breakfast til at least 1, which is good bc Mutt Lynch's stops at 11 45), a regular couple (reg meaning they go there a lot) came in and ordered mimosas. She didn't get her salad before her meal, and freaked out. Made a scene, got up and left and was ranting and raving how her side was messed up and how she specifically said it a couple of times. She mostly freaked out on her bf (felt kind of bad). Then he had to act all upset when you know he just wanted to eat his burger and sweet potato fries (it looked pretty delicious...i was wondering if they would give the messed up meal to us...they didn't) Thanks for the show and for reminding my bf that I'm not that crazy :)
Also has darts. Someone also tried to steal my bike from the bike rack once while I was there... :( -
Review from tae k.
The hand-carved prime rib sandwich was really tasty. It comes with real horseradish sauce that will burn your nose hairs which I love. Also comes with an au-jus dip. The fries were good (could have used some more but I should watch my intake anyway). I am glad I took their recommendation. The staff was friendly and helpful. Convenient free parking. Got a nice spot in front of a TV to watch the game but the sandwich was so good, I missed most of the highlights.

***review of breakfast only***
Biscuits and Gravy, perfectly cooked hash browns, breakfast burritos with chorizo and fresh salsa....this is just part of what our group had for B-fast. All for a surprisingly low cost.
Bloody Mary's made right. Quick service. Place is not the ideal brunch spot, but I liked the vibe and even the griminess of it. No pretentiousness to the place or the food.
Overall, I thought it excellent place for a Sat breakfast and will go back cuz its no nonsense attitude and good food made a fan out of me. -

We accidentally tried this place when we couldn't get into Mutt's. Tried the corn beef hash and eggs it was the best I ever had. It was so good, we took my 85 year old mother there yesterday morning for her birthday.
Dad said it was the best he's ever had in his 88 years. Loved it so much he wants to go back, the next time we're in town, for the SOS!!
Congrats to the staff. They were over the top great and very respectful and helpful to my folks!!
If you want as good a beach experience as Mutts or anywhere else on the peninsula....try Mularky's!! -
Review from Nicole G.
Normally I'm a fan of dive bars... buuuut this place rubbed me the wrong way. The service was great, the drinks were a bit on the strong side (which I know isn't necessarily a problem, but it can lead to being blacked out while thinking you're only drinking singles and they're a double pour). It was a bit rowdy, which also isn't a bad thing... BUT, the bathrooms are freaking nasty. Horrible. Walked into a girl puking at 10 PM! Learn your limits, lady. I would probably give it another chance if I return, but it certainly wasn't anything special to me.

REVIEW OF NIGHTLIFE ONLY:
My review is based on my experience there on the one night that I went. It may have just been a bad night, but who knows. And my review is based on my experience with the patrons of the pub, and not based on my experience with the management or the establishment.
A group of us (4 girls, 1 guy) went to Malarky's together for a birthday thing last night. None of us have been there before and boy, I don't think I'll be going back at night.
We got there around 10:30 and there was only a couple of people ahead of us trying to get in, so we were able to get in pretty fast. As soon as we got in, the first thing I noticed was, oh wow, its a fucking sausage fest! And not even eye-candy sausages. There were no females in sight and as soon as our group of girls walked in, we can feel the eyes on us like we were fresh meat.
The place was PACKED, bros everywhere and it's so hard to go anywhere at all. It took us at least 5 minutes to get from the door to the bathroom.
Even though I consider myself not short, (5'4'') I felt SO SHORT here. Like every guy that we had to walk through to get to the bathroom was at least a head taller than us. Some super drunk creep actually had the nerve to tap our group of girls on our heads as we walked by and yelled to his friends that there were some "shorties" here tonight.
Another douche kept on spilling beer on me while trying to high 5 me. I mean seriously? If you want to be friendly with that gesture I don't want to high 5 you cuz you spilled beer on me, and if you want to hit on me, did you really thing high fiving is the way to go?
So many fucking CREEPS in this place. We stayed for 5 minutes total before we bounced to Rudy's.
Overall, it was not our scene at all. But some people apparently really likes the place. so yeah :/ -

Traditional Irish bar and very cold beer. The burgers are good and probably too much (size) for most people.

Malarky's is a step above a dive bar and can be tons of fun. I don't particularly enjoy it for extremely crowded nights, but I love the place when its about 50% capacity. They have a kitchen, but I generally stick to pints and pitchers. Bartenders are extremely friendly & I've had fun playing darts when the place was more or less empty.
Be warned that cops watch the parking lot, so it would be best to walk or taxi your way here. -

Irvine, CA
It seems like it's feast or famine for this place. It's either dead, or you have to wait in line to get into this place. It's reasonably priced, and the fact that you don't have to go too far down on the peninsula to drink here is a good thing. It won't ever be as cool as Rug Harbor was (yes I know it's snug, but if you're a guy, you know why it's called rug!)
Friendly service, and it's a really easy going crowd. It doesn't take a year and a half to get a drink when it's crowded, and there's never any tough guys there looking to start anything.
I wouldnt recommend walking home to north irvine from there, but after many many many drinks, I did that once. Yes, I'm an idiot.
If this place is really closing, that would be a disappointment. I've spent a lot of time at this place. -

Malarky's is easily the best bar/pub on the Newport Peninsula. Not only is the nightlife great, but the FOOD IS AWESOME. Seriously, who would have thought a bar could have great prime rib??!? My friends and I go there at least once a week and we are never disappointed. I recommend the clam chowder and the "max shot" for a guaranteed great experience!

Review from Amy K.
From some of the reviews I had read, I was expecting Malarky's to be totally disgusting, the kind of place I wouldn't want to touch anything without spraying some hand sanitizer first. But I have to say, after my weeknight visit to Malarky's, I was pleasantly surprised!
My friends and I met up for dinner and drinks. Imported beers on tap were only $3.50, including New Castle, Guinness, and Stella Artois!
To eat, most of us got the fish 'n' chips. It came with a dinner salad, too, for only $9. The fish 'n' chips weren't greasy and tasted pretty good. My friend's cheeseburger also looked tasty.
The owner of Malarky's was donating a portion of the proceeds to my co-worker's family since he is battling cancer right now. It was really great to see the local community pull together in his time of need.
While I might not hit up Malarky's on the weekend, I wouldn't mind coming here again during the week for a drink or bite to eat. It really wasn't bad! -
Review from Leighs A.
Irvine, CA
Stella was $3.50 in an ice cold mug! Woo! But it was pretty watered down, and really tasted like Coors Light to me. Hmm. Cheeseburger was fine, got to choose between onion rings or fries. The rings were great! GIANT slices of pickle for my burger. I certainly think that after tax and tip of $14 this was a good meal.
I can certainly see how if this place is a scene on the weekends. I liked the shape of a square bar, so you can access it on all four sides. Reminds me of the movie Cocktail and they could do some great tricks in the air - but that's just my fantasy. Its an Irish bar - they aren't doin that crazy stuff.
Lots of parking around the building in the lot on the side and back. -

Newport Beach, CA
This place is an institution on the balboa peninsula. The new owner figured out how to get that smell out of the bathrooms. Anybody who has been here in the past knows what I'm talking about. It seems like every night out in Newport inevitably goes though here. Stop by and have a car bomb!

Review from Nina F.
Long Beach, CA
These two stars are for 1) one great night I had a Malarky's during college, and 2) the band playing Irish-ized versions of Johnny Cash songs on St. Patrick's Day.
I've given Malarky's plenty of chances to win me over, but the more I go back the more I'm disappointed. St. Patrick's Day did it for me -- beyond god-awful service, likely a result of a disastrous managerial decision to only have two bartenders on duty, which meant our group waited for 20 minutes at the bar without so much as a glimmer of eye contact. This wasn't to say the bartenders weren't paying attention -- they were... just more to each other than any customers.
After being accosted by a really old guy who wanted to rub our bellies for "luck," we left, drinkless, disgusted, and frustrated. Thank goodness for Laventina's and the Shamrock. -
Review from Toto E.
Santa Ana, CA
I usually dread this part of Newport Beach especially on the weekends but surprisingly tonight, there was parking to be had! Malarky's is basically a pub where you take your friends and have a few drinks. If you want grub they have fish chips, hamburgers (which I ordered) and other sandwiches for great value. And if you don't mind the noise and din of chatter by other patrons, this place is worth a try.

Orange County, CA
My friend and I stopped in here on St. Paddy's day afternoon and it was packed. We had to park at the Albertson's parking lot because the lot and street parking were both full. We had a great time thanks to the green pitchers of beer. I'm subtracting 2 stars for
1) parking
2) it was unbearably hot and wreaked of body odor and mold -
Review from Ursula G.
Been here a few times, nice atmosphere. It gets pretty crowded on weekends, but it was super empty last night. We asked for any drink specials, and they didn't have any...then when my friend went to pay for his bud light- it was $3!!!! So... that's regular price?! Good to know!
The decor of the place has nice Irish touches, I'd give it an extra star, but the bartenders aren't very friendly, you think they would be at least on slow nights. -
Review from Maria T.
Santa Monica, CA
What I like about Malary's is that it doesn't take itself too seriously like it's neighbor across the street (:::cough cough::: Rudy's :::cough cough:::) I've hardly ever had to wait to get in here, even on busy weekends. With that said, the "ghetto" factor is definitely up here, and you're going to see more hoodies and baseball caps than collared shirts and pretty faces.
The huge square bar in the center is interesting, but I don't know how great it is for mingling. The standing areas are crowded and you basically have to maneuver around the bar wherever you go. It's usually a "walk through" for me and my friends, as in, we stop by, walk through, and then head to the next bar looking for better!Listed in: Delightfully Tacky, Yet…

Review from Geoff R.
Anaheim, CA
This is probably one of my least favorite bars on planet Earth. It's actually hard to describe how incredibly shitty this place is. I've been dragged here numerous times by a variety of friends in the past...and each time they swore that "this time it's gonna rock, man!" Yeah...OK. But, no. It doesn't rock. In fact, it sucks! It sucks EVERY freakin' time! The place is a dump, the bartenders totally suck (imagine waiting 45 minutes for service), the bouncers are total sociopathic 'roid-monkeys, and the crowd...well, much like HB, the NB crowd usually consists of of punk-ass scenesters, wanna-be Paris Hiltons, and pathetic "I'm-SOOOOOO-cool-cuz-I-just-turned-21" children.
The crowning achievement of this hell-hole was when I was sitting at the bar with a buddy, sipping our beer, chatting, minding our own business, and some psycho, cracked-out chick I'd never seen before in my life rolled up behind me and socked me in the back of the head for no apparent reason. Yeah, seriously! I was like, WTF...do I even know you? What's this all about? But wait...it gets better! At that point Malarky's neanderthal bouncer threw me out because I (yes, me...the person who was, as of 30 seconds ago, minding his own business) was "causing trouble". Huh?!? So, yeah...if the typical lame, white-trash, meathead NB crowd is your thing, then by all means visit this place. But, if your knuckles aren't dragging on the ground, then you'll probably just be annoyed by pretty much EVERYTHING about Malarky's. As far as bars go, this place is a total joke...it's more like a frat house. -
Review from Kenny B.
Good and bad things about this place. The good? If you get in early enough, its a decent bar that serves decent drinks. The bad? Its always crazy crowded in here, and its usually the same crowd. That makes it tough to order a drink if you're a guy (tip, bring an attractive girl to get the bartender's attention), or if you aren't a regular, like many people at this place are. Also, its tough to get in a lot of the time after 10pm, this place is small, but fills up really quickly. Which means a long line out the door.
If you went to school at UCI, you can always find someone in here that you recognize at least remotely. Which can be either bad or good, depending on if you want some anonymity or if you feel quite social.
The bottom line here is that there are plenty of other bars in Newport, and if you can't get in here, then no big loss. -

mmmmm first stop of the zombie pub crawl! (2.5 stars rounded to 3)
This was a good place to meet, there was plenty of room for us and it wasnt too crowded. that said the service blew. our waitress basically ignored us even tho we were at a table and had menus and wanted to eat. she took so much time that we wound up late to the next stop of the pub crawl. Mostly got ignored. Maybe if you sit at the bar its better? or she was just hating on our zombie makeup.
I was drinking my favorite beer - blue moon with an orange slice, and we ordered up burgers. I had the hawaiian with a side of sweet potato fries. The burger was decent, no complaints there. nothing memorable, but damn was i hungry. Good sweet potato fries, crispy and flavorful. they actually reminded me of the ones i got from costco, but thats not bad cuz those are yummy fries...
overall decent food, good beer selection. crappy service. standard irish pub.
*********************
got a message from the owner - the crappy waitress was let go after the event, evidently i wasnt the only one to notice her lack of caring. would definitely be willing to go back and give these guys another try.
"Thanks for your review. I appreciate your honesty on the service. I work hard to try and give everyone good friendly service. I actually terminated the employee that served you on the day of the zombie crawl due to inaddequate service. I hope u come back sometime to try our food and service again. Let me know how it is..

This is the worst bar!!! The bouncers are always on power trips! Just last night one took my ACTUAL ID!! It is my only form of identification and now I can't even drive because the bar has my license and refuses to give it back because I have no way to prove I am who I say I am!! This bar smells like urine and their security is a joke. Do not fall for their "new" look- it's ridiculous! If I wouldn't get arrested I would go back and kick that man....I'm probably 5 years older than he is and now he has ruined my entire month! I will never go back to this place! Beware!!!!

Holy hangover!
That is what you're gonna get here.
Also, you will get a bartender who is dead set on getting your name on their wall of shame because you're from "San Fran Shitsco", as well as the crazy dude at the bar who tries to convince you repeatedly to let him tattoo your arm. "Just a little heart- it won't hurt, it will be cute"
Yea... It's that kind of place -
Review from Phillip M.

I read the other reviews thought most of them missed the mark. Here's my take:
-It's a PUB. I've never gone to Malarky's (and don't think many people 21-30 would either) for the food. Any review of this place that takes food into the star rating is gonna throw you off.
-From 8:00 to 10:00 every Friday and Saturday drinks are half off. Except Irish Car bombs... That means pitchers are $4.50. To me, that's a good deal.
-If you get in at a decent time, there's no line. It's usually kinda empty before 9:30-10, so you can grab a seat, watch whatever game is on, and wait for the crowd to trickle in. If you show up late, it sucks, because you're not gonna have a good spot at the bar and you're prob going to wait in line, unless you're a girl. The bouncer is usually a dick, but hey, he's a bouncer.
-The atmosphere: it's what you would expect of a pub. It feels comfortable, they usually have good music, they have a small dance area for the girls to act silly and the decorations are fitting. I like going here before it gets packed to start off my night. It's always comfortable and service isn't bad. When it's crowded... just like any other bar, you're not going to get speedy service.
Overall, I gave this place a 4 because it's fun. They have two dart boards, good location, good atmosphere, cheap drinks (between 8-10), and a good layout. The square bar gives you more access to bar space, but does come at the cost of the bar tender not always seeing you. Yes, it's usually got the same people here and yes it's very common to see a grip of college kids in here, but that means you're probably at the right spot if you're looking for a fun bar. Who goes to a bar to entertain themselves with a glass of wine and intellectual conversations? Doesn't seem very intellectual to me to be in a pub in the first place if you're looking for that type of scene.
Malarky's will always have a special place in my heart. -

I had a good Jack and Coke here. That's the positive.
The bathroom was one notch above disgusting, and I was subjected to the vapid and bottomless ramblings of a couple of stereotypical OC girls while waiting in line for it.
The "dance floor" is a sliver of space in the corner of the bar, where I imagine one could be accosted by popped collars and popping pelvises if one so desired. -

I had a burger and some fries there last week. I think the place fits the descriptor "Dive bar." The staff was nice and the burger was worth the price. They have done lots of improvements, and I hear more are in the works.

This place is my token Irish pub. They have great food and cheap beer.
You can get a pitcher of domestic for $9 and some change. Their eggs Benedict is one of the best I've had, and I've had it at most of the local spots in Newport Beach. It's close to impossible to get in here on St. Patty's, so I usually cheat and go to the District(the Stag!!) for my green beer fix. All in all, a great spot. Nothing fancy, unpolished and perfect!! -

Review on drinks and atmosphere only***
Came here after many dive bars for a friends birthday. I would say that this is one of the nice bars in Newport. Went here with a group of people, there was about a 5 minute wait, but usually there is a long line. To get in, there is no cover which is always a plus. The bar inside is a square in the middle that has seating all around it. Drinks are about normal price, between $6 and $8 for a well drink. The service was pretty fast for as crowded as it was. They do have tables and TV's for food. The crowd is a mix, but mainly your typical Newport Beach scene. Good place to go out and have drinks, shots, mingle, and have a good time late at night.
***2.22.2010...Just noticed they ran my $13.00 charge for drinks for $130 pending on my checking account. lol, sucks but an easy fix. -
Review from Albert L.
I kind of had a hard time grading this place between three and four stars. It definitely a great place to go to if you bring the right people with you, which is key to turning what is usually a somewhat small and crowded and at times, kinda messy place (well, during the weekends, which have been the only times I've been) into a decently fun romp. If anything, the seemingly enclosed environment of this place can seem welcoming, warm, and cozy if the night is cold outside (the sea breezes don't help). Bartenders are friendly, prices are decent, and the food's OK as well.
The place definitely epitomizes what a pub would look like with it's carved wooden decor and white walls. Parking probably won't always be easy to find (no surprise).
Overall, Malarky's does have a lot of character. -
Review from Heather B.

Malarky's is the bar to come to on beach days. One thing I do miss about living in Costa Mesa is riding my bike to the beach, but stopping at Malarky's before...and after. It always made for a fun ride home. Pretty much the best vibe as far as bars go in Newport. The bartenders here are awesome. It will get ridiculously crowded here, so if you can, come during the week, or before school's get out, when it's less crowded by the beach.
