We finally got around to trying this place (thank you, Richard!) and it was delicious.  I can't believe we hadn't been sooner.

The atmosphere was nice and casual, the fish was top quality, and the chef clearly knew what he was doing.

We will definitely be back.

The best sushi hands down.  At dinner they pretty much only do sushi so we had to stop for a burger for my hubby afterward, he doesn't do seafood.  I ordered the nine piece chef pick.  He made me 2 salmon, 2 eel, 2 shrimp, 2 tuna and 2 (I want to say halibut)  so ended up with 10 pieces all together.  Green tea was good and edamame was okay.  Expect $20 per person for fantastic sushi.  I will dream about this place.

Many people who visit Maui stay in the resort areas, and rarely go to Makawao.  But if you decide to spend the day in Upcountry, or Haleakala, you can come to Makawao to eat, rather than drive back to wherever you are staying.

The Sushi rice "ball" is smaller than you may be used to, because it is made in a more traditional way.  I would have liked it to be a little larger and seasoned a bit more.  The  fish is very fresh here, as it should be anywhere in Hawaii.

I ordered the Nigiri Combo A plate with 9 Nigiri Sushis.  The next Combo had 17 pieces, which I felt was too much.  I had 2 each Ahi, Salmon, White fish and Hamachi, and one each of Shrimp and Unagi.  The Chef gave me an extra Nigiri.  The Combo plates here don't have any Rolls.  That makes it better than most places.

When I ate here, there was only two people working, the Sushi Chef, and I am assuming, his wife, the Waitress/Bus girl/Dishwasher/Hostess/Register girl.  The Woman did everything!  I kinda felt sorry for her.  I don't want to say service was bad, but becaused she was the only person working, it was understandably slow.

All in all, very good Sushi in a place you may not expect to find Sushi, or may not venture to.  Too bad for you.

I have only come here for the sushi - 3 times - and it is amazingly good. Don't let the 'deli' part throw you off, the sushi is fresh, delicious, and meticulously prepared. It is BYOS - you can buy sake or beer a few doors down at the Rodeo and bring it in. This place definitely gets reverse style points - it is so unassuming and so local, a big plus in Maui, and the wonderful sushi seems so out of place. You can't go wrong.

We loved the sushi here. We had a couple of rolls and the fish was very fresh and the rolls were beautifully prepared. Came down off the mountain and headed right in to Makawao. Got to know the owners a bit. Very nice people. He does the sushi and she does everything else. They have several flavors of great ice cream here too. It is a deli; they make sandwiches, but the sushi is a great reason to go here.
