5 stars for the bread!!! $2 for 3 feet of bread. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating, but its a pretty big a$$ piece of bread.
I would recommend buying a lot and freezing it so it doesn't go bad. It tastes just the same after toasting it in the toaster oven.
Since it is an ethnic market, I wasnt sure what the proper procedure was in obtaining one. I just went to the back and there happened to be some out on the counter. I looked at the guys working at the oven and pointed "can I get one?" and they nodded. Grabbed a plastic to wrap it in and that was that. Pretty easy.

This place is the center of the universe for Bay Area Afghans. Why? Because of the bread. I swear, Afghan people will not move out of Fremont because of Maiwand.. because they don't want to be too far away from the fresh baked bread. At $2 a piece, these big pieces of flat bread are so warm, soft and delicious that you will get addicted. Most people walk out of there withl a ridiculous amount of bread because they put them in the freezer, and thaw them as needed
Maiwand is a full Afghan Market with a halal butcher shop and bread bakery. They also have fresh dried fruits & nuts, spices and a plethora of teas. Cookies, desserts and candy are also abundance here. I would reccommend trying their "jalabee" which is like a funnel cake type dessert.
Maiwand has the reputation to know all things concerning the Afghan community, from food to music to the latest news & gossip. So, if you ever want to experience Afghan food or culture, I would definitely suggest stopping by and checking it out. You won't be disappointed.

I am sad to report that I ate an entire piece of Afghan bread the other day. I did have a little help from my friends.
But I am sort of addicted to the fresh baked bread, lebanese cheese, all the assorted teas and the over all feel of this market.
It's worth a Bart ride to Fremont.

My wife and I just kind of stumbled onto this place, and realized this store must be the biggest Afghan Bread hub outside of Kabul. Evertyime I go in there to buy one of these wonderful flat breads, the bakery (in the back of the store next to the loud TV) is buzzing non-stop, cranking out fresh handmade flat breads longer than a Tony Hawk skateboard (I'm talking the old school ones before twin tails). I still don't know the proper way to ask for one, except to catch someone's attention behind the counter and ask for "one!". It seems wrong, because most people who go in there walk out with stacks of 6 or 8 at a time, their arms extended like forklifts. At $1.50 a loaf, it makes sense to stock up if you have the mouths to feed. This bread is hot, and so good. I don't even know the proper way to eat it. We spread peanut butter on it, and even after a few days , we toast it and it still has a great crunchy/chewy goodness and always smells great.
