4 stars for the baked goods, like their perfect brioche and pain au chocolat.

2 stars for the utterly mediocre in-dining experience.  Almost everything I've had has been far from worth the calories.  I confirmed this memory last week at lunch, when I opted for the buttery brie panini.  The bread was partially charred, the promised slices of pear seemed to be missing, and the lackluster prosciutto was completely lost under the thick clot of tasteless brie.

I work right in the middle of Downtown Grapevine so I am very aware of the Main St. "Cafe" as we call it. Last year, my boss had us meeting their for a "before-work-devotional" once a week in the morning so I had my fair share of what Main St. has to offer.

I typically always went with the Apple Turnover for fear of anything else that I couldn't pronounce on the menu, and it was always so-so. I mean, it's a croissant with apples in it, how hard can that be to get right?

It wasn't until about 2 weeks ago that I actually tried one of their "breakfast" dishes, you know, with eggs, and bacon, etc. It was wonderful! The manager hand-delivered the hot plate to me personally, complete with fresh scrambled eggs, crunchy crisp bacon, a good portion of their potatoes, and a hot buttery croissant. Topped off with an icy cold glass of OJ, and it was one of the better breakfast meals I have had in a while. It was a little pricey for breakfast, but I figure since they don't cook it that much that I would have to pay a little more than say, Denny's.

Stay away from the pastries, try their breakfast.

After reading the reviews, I decided I had to investigate. Perusing the expansive case, I was not in the mood for heavy cream cheeses or chocolate so I opted for an airy, flaky croissant that was so buttery my fingers instantly became shiny from minor contact. The flakiness made eating a messy endeavor so I'm glad I chose to eat outside by the town gazebo to share the carnage with some boisterous pigeons. A nice place, staff was friendly, I'd go again.

Sunday morning: I ate the tart I hauled home yesterday since I knew I wouldn't want to cook on Easter morning. The strawberry tart had an odd consistency and seemed to fragment much like cheap particle board furniture when it explodes on your living room carpet. While the tart was gorgeous looking in the case it just didn't taste that great and it had nothing to do with being one day old. Croissants YAY but tarts Nay. It is rare for me to meet a baked good I don't like. Woooo too much sugar and no real food ....

I called in last minute for a cake to be made... It was just for 2 people so I didn't need anything huge or obnoxious. The lady on the phone offered to make a brownie "cake" for me - didn't sound terribly promising or bad.

When I went to pick it up I was pleasantly surprised. The "cake" had 5-star decor on it and they really went the extra mile to make it look divine. It was 4 pieces of brownies but they really outdid themselves! They price was agreeable too.

Don't know if I'll do one of their specialty cakes, they seem a bit too pricy for me, and the shop is a bit out of the way for me to go again anytime soon.

I go in here with a good friend the day after I resolve to lower my carb intake, and what's the first thing I notice?  That's right, the large display case of absolutely fantastic-looking desserts.  Seriously, all the desserts in the case were all executed so well I had to take a picture.

Come here if you want dessert.  Come here if you want bread.  Shoot, come here for breakfast, lunch, or dinner -- they have a large menu featuring French toast, lox and bagels, cold sandwiches, hot sandwiches, crepes, dinner entrees, etc., and their menu says they use local and organic ingredients whenever possible.  Nice!

I would give this place five stars except for my disappointing, lackluster foam-less latte (what is up with a latte with no foam?) and the staff, who acted as though they were genuinely surprised to have people coming into their restaurant, wanting to eat.  They just seemed stunned, somehow.

Man, I want to eat all of those desserts.

Sorry, I really wanted to like this place, but I thought it was average at best.  I'm thinking I might've just had a crappy experience and that it's normally better here, but I don't know if that's accurate or not.

I ordered the chicken crepes and their The Bombe Almond Cake.  When my food came out, there were two things I noticed:

- The crepes were rather small.  I wasn't expecting enormous, good-lord-this-weighs-20-pounds-and-has-at-least-s ix-animals-worth-of-meat-in-it crepes like what you get in Paris, but I was expecting something substantial.  I don't think these could fill up much of anybody.
- The person who took my order put me down for ham crepes instead of chicken.  Not a problem for me as I like ham, but I'm sure there are other people out there who might be upset by this kind of mistake.

The crepes were pretty good, but nothing spectacular.  The potatoes that came with the crepes were way too salty, which is an impressive thing for me to say because I put entirely too much salt on everything I eat.  I also noticed that the menu said I'd be getting a salad with my meal - I never did.

So, on to the dessert.  Hey, it's a bakery, the dessert must be good, right?  Well...kind of.  I mean, it was good.  Very rich, and very chocolatey.  But that's the problem - it's an almond cake, not a chocolate cake.  Why was chocolate the only flavor it had?  It tasted like a pretty good chocolate mousse, which was nice, but certainly not "almond cake."

Overall, I guess it was alright, just not at all what I expected.  Maybe I'll come back again sometime and see if I have a better experience, but I kind of doubt I will.

Great food, great coffee, great atmosphere.

Free wifi.

I go here almost every Tuesday morning for a breakfast meeting, and regularly for lunch, too.

****  Update 3/23/08 -

My friend and I ordered the crepes with Swiss cheese and ham, drizzled with Bechamel;  baked French toast with sweet whipped cream, strawberries and a very full flavored maple syrup; and lastly, polish sausage and cheddar in Brioche.

The crepes were fabulous with very thin slices of ham, a rich, yet sharp flavor of Swiss, and a perfectly seasoned Bechamel.  I would so recommend this to anyone, anytime, RIGHT NOW!.

The French toast was served as 3 triangles with a single strawberry slice adorning each slice.  The syrup and cream were served as side items.  The "toast", since baked, was made ahead and rewarmed.  It had a dense appearance that wasn't overly appealing to me, but upon tasting it, oh my, it became the rich dessert of the meal.  The only drawback, as a breakfast item, is that it was excessively sweet (for me), which made the deliciously pure maple syrup unnecessary and over the top on sweet.

As to the sausage in a roll - that's about what it was, and the only disappointment I've encountered in multiple visits.  The cheese was omitted and over all..... think Kolache.  Nothing special.

But oh how I love this place!

Update - 3/29/08

Had an inkling for a pastry with coffee, mid-afternoon on a Saturday.  The pastry counter, which is abundently and temptingly overflowing during the morning hours, was near vacant at 3:30 in the afternoon..
