5 stars because I was given birth to in this hospital!!!!
Ok ok still not convinced??My mother, was given her first job as a registered nruse in America at Maimondies in the 80's and so basically I know secondhand through her that this place is and always was far from perfect...but is better than people think and can be trusted just as much as any other hospital can be.
Maimonides is the obvious winner within Brooklyn considering your other choice in an emergency is coney island hospital (lets just say NOT EVEN IF MY LIFE DEPENDED ON IT!!).
Maimonides is a hospital that is good at servicing its borough and its needs. Insurance is usually not a problem and makes medical care possible for a wide range of people, they have a great pediatric department, and lots of diverse branches of medical, mental, and rehabilatory services.
I had my baby at Maimonides this past summer and I am so sorry we brought him into the world there. It was a terrible experience from the moment I was admitted to the day I was discharged. There were a few staff members who cared about quality patient care but most did not. I wouldn't recommend Maimonides to my worst enemy and I will NEVER go back there.
This place is a fucking nightmare. I was stuck there for 15 hours in the emergency room. I had chest pains and thought I might be having a heart attack. I must have had eight different residence doctors ask me the same questions then tell me eight different theories. All this while being surrounded by 100 heart beat monitor machines with their insane beeping and dying and moaning patients on the other end of those things. It was like being on the set of Schindler's List. Does anyone remember the cattle car scene where the victims are groaning in agony from the heat and lack of water? No Oscar Schindlesr to the rescue at Maimondies.
After all was said and done they gave me a radiology (?) scan. The dope doing the scan explained that he was injecting me with radioactive fluid. It would show any blockages in my arteries. So gingerly spilled some on my chest and just wiped it off. When I asked if this would give a false reading he said the doctors would be able told tell the difference between external and internal fluid readings. Guess what? I had a blockage and they needed to send a camera up my vein (or artery) starting in my thigh. When I told the docs about the spillage they said the reading was unlikely because of spillage. It's was "85% likely I had a blockage and was going to need bypass surgery. Three agonizing hours later, "You fell in to the 15%. It really was the spill".
All my worries over the final diagnoses of heartburn. Oh yeah I was also diabetic. A young gun doctor said he would work with me in controlling my blood sugar with a new program he and Maimonides were working on. All I had to do was take notes of what I ate and what my blood sugars were for three weeks and show up at his office inside the hospital. I showed up, gave the secretary my ID and insurance. One hour in the hot and stuffy and crowded waiting room later.."Sorry! We don't accept your insurance". The doctor saw me anyway, told me there was nothing he could do, not even a reference, looked at my notes briefly, shook my hand and told me good luck.
You're better off with Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard.
I would highly recommend this hospital. Different hospitals are known for different things, like Coney Island is good for psychiatric and trauma. Lutheran, certain cases of trauma.
I would highly recommend this hospital, especially for heart surgeries (my friend's father had a very successful surgery, this type of surgery done at Coney Island Hosp had a 50% success rate, so you can see the importance of picking a hospital) and its "children's hospital." (coney island won't do pediatric surgeries and will transfer the kids to maimonides)
I'm 19, but at my very first admission I was 18. 17 yr olds to 18 and maybe even a little older (up to 21 even) might experience this problem. The adult sections won't want to deal with you, because they do not like to handle such young people, however you age out of the pediatric floor. this is where you really have to fight for yourself. (i personally prefer pediatrics)
its current children floor is under reconstruction, but will be expected to be open in april 2007. its sponsored by the NY Aquarium, so the new floor will have of course, fish tanks! and this whole aquatic theme. the PICU built several years ago, is pretty updated, all glass doors etc (better to watch you).
fun fact about being PICU status: the higher your room number, it kinda gauges the severity of your case. the smaller the number, the more stable you are. (the higher numbers are closer to the medicine/main nurse station/monitors, aka quick for emergencies)
and you'll deal with crazy (emphasis on crazy) roommates and crazy hospital rules. HECK my current roommate now just THREATENED my sister. wtf you say? yeah. totally. so should you ever be in a miserable long hospital stay like me, you can email me and we can commiserate. i mean i have had some pretty awful roommates, but this one just make the other ones look like nothing. (patient representatives are important here)
OY VEY. (mind you, very appropriate for the neighborhood)
I would have to say the best hospital especially for cancer. My mother-in-law went to the emergency room waited for a long time. Due to all the testing. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. With the next day they scheduled her to have a hysterectomy to remove the cancer. The surgery went perfect. She went through chemo therapy. Now she is fine. So I thank this hospital for saving her life.
This hospital has always had the reputation of being a fantastic well run hospital. I remember my older family members would say when you get sick go to Maimonides. Well when my grandfather got sick he was brought here. When I came here to visit him I was simply appalled by how badly this hospital was run. Nurses were just standing round chatting with each other, and if you asked them a question they were very rude. I couldn't believe the way they were shoving these eldery patients around. Just disgusting.
After weeks of so called care we are removing my grandmother off the breathing machine. Today I found out she has hepatitis B. Apparently they thought it was of no importance to treat it during her stay. I hope the saying "what goes around comes around" rings true and those that failed to provide my grandmother with proper care find themselves in the same situation. Maybe then they will really understand the true objective to their jobs.

See book coming out this week-- HOSPITAL-- by Julie Salamon. It focuses on this hospital.
In brooklyn, this is the place to be.
I was born here too! Used to live a few blocks away, and my roommate worked for the maternity ward. From what I hear, giving birth there is a smart move, as it is nationally recognized.
