Maid-Rite
1 review for Maid-Rite
I've never been to Iowa before so when the desk manager at my hotel suggested Maid-Rite as an "Iowa Experience" I felt like it was something that I had to try. He described it as a "loose meat sandwich" which I assumed was like a sloppy joe. Not so much.
Maid-Rite (a VERY confusing name if you ask me) markets itself as a "healthy alternative". If this is true, then ANYTHING could be true. They sky is falling. Delaware will succeed from the nation. China doesn't put lead in the toys. Seriously, this is the most ridiculous statement ever made. The "original" is basically taco meat - without the seasoning served on a wonder bread bun that has been bathed in grease. You can add ketchup, mustard, onions, and pickles on top if you want to - I personally don't think that there is a condiment on earth that might help.
That being said, the fries were good - not fantastic, but good.
They also serve milkshakes and malts which I suspect would be very good, but I didn't try.
Maid-Rite has been an Iowa institution since 1926 - based on my experience, I'm not sure why - but there are regional differences... The decor of the place is VERY fun, a lot like a 1950's joint with sparkly read chairs with chrome detail.
When in Iowa...
