4 reviews for Mahzu Japanese Restaurant
This is the local Japanese restaurant of choice for my friends and as we know the family that runs the place. Having said that, I like the casual open layout of the restaurant with the spacious hibachi section in the back of the restaurant. I could seriously eat a mound of the fried rice any time of day, even for breakfast.
The special rolls are good choices for people who don't eat too much raw fish. Then again, I don't think I've met a maki roll I don't like. As for some of the hot entrees, the tempura is a safe bet as well as teriyaki. Udon noodles were also satisfying if you aren't afraid of carbs. For dessert, mochi and fried ice cream are guilty pleasures and I would eat it every time if science would allow it.
BYOB is also great because of the liquor store next door though I don't drink, but know a few people that do. You know who you are.
I have one word for this place....DISGUSTING! I had originally reviewed Mazhu as "just okay" but I was there last night and I'm not sure if it was an "off night" or if this is their new standard. I ordered several sushi rolls (all of which contained cooked seafood). I had asked our server if the sushi chef could cut my sushi with a clean knife (one that hadn't just touched raw fish) as I am pregnant and she laughed in my face. In addition to the insult, she had the nerve to bring me several rolls with BROWN avocado. It wasn't fresh at all. When she came to take my plate and asked if I enjoyed it, I pointed out the brown avocado and told her that it wasn't very fresh and she insisted that it was. I'm sorry but when avocado is brown, it's either not fresh or been sitting out for quite some time. This is not acceptable. My husband had hibachi (filet mignon). I tasted a piece of his steak only to find that it was extremely salty - almost too salty to even eat.
Do yourself a favor and find somewhere else to go for Japanese food. There are much better Japanese restaurants in the area that serve FRESH sushi and good hibachi....Shiki in Middletown, NJ is one of them.

Mahzu in Aberdeen is "just okay". They serve hibachi and sushi and while I'm a fan of both, I've had… Read more »
Aside from the fact that I have a personal connection to this place, it is honestly one of the best sushi places in town!
The restaurant offers separate seating for hibachi and sushi, as well as a sushi bar, which is what I recommend for the full experience. You can request sushi if you are sitting in hibachi, but not vise-versa, so make sure you decide what you want before you get there.
Special Rolls are incredible so I recommend shelling out a few extra bucks for those if you are in the mood for something new. But if you want to stick to something more traditional, the standards are just as good.
Fish is always fresh, I've never had an issue with that, but the place does fill up fast, particularly at night, so you might have to wait for your food. Get there early or if you're coming in for hibachi, call ahead and RSVP.
Alcohol is BYOB, and the liquor place next door is 'full service' :) The guys that work there are terrific and they will even chill your wine and then bring it over to the restaurant for you.
As for desert...I recommend the mochi! Although I'm terribly disappointed that mango is not a flavor on the mochi list anymore, it's still my favorite, refreshing desert.
Enjoy!
I had an entirely different experienced as Marina. Mahzu was memorable for one reason... the amount of time I spent in the bathroom at home afterwards. Needless to say, I won't be going back. I would give this no stars if I could.
