Went here with two friends for breakfast and, though we all ordered ENTIRELY different styles of breakfast... we all left smiling.
    HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE???

1 man ordered pancakes and was thrilled.
1 man ordered migas made with love butter and was overjoyed.
This girl ordered this hibiscus tea/juice concoction and chicken salad and was beside herself with the deliciousness and the variety of salad dressing options.
All 3 shared a mag mud and took pictures we were so happy during the experience.

Is this the breakfast restaurant equivalent of Mary Poppins medicine????
    PERHAPS.

Hello! Let me start by saying I never write reviews on Yelp! unless the establishment is a 5 star or a 1 star. Well I am proud to say that the Magnolia Cafe would be a zero star place for me if I could go that low.

In truth... This place could be the worst meal I have ever had in my life. Rarely do I take 2 bites of something, gag, and stop eating. And yes. That is what I did here.

People tell me that the only reason to come here is breakfast. I don't eat breakfast. So, we were here for dinner. And I ordered the Shrimp Enchiladas. When they arrived, I thought the dish smelled bad. But, I went ahead and took 2 bites. It was the worst tasting food I have ever had in my life. Bitter. Sour. Gooey. Just horrible. I gagged and put my napkin into it and pushed it aside. Later I felt sick.

I would never ever recommend this place, even to my dog.

I'd give them 3.5 stars but since I can't do halves I'll list 3. Came here Saturday around 10 am for brunch after a morning at Zilker park.

Arrived w/ the coffee and water outside, which is thoughtful and convenient. Parking is indeed not fun, luckily we parked in the back and found a spot. Getting out of there was a challenge...that's where they lost 1 star.

Tables are practically on top of each other. soI heard every conversation around me... thats the other star...

FOOD: I had Eggs Benedict -Florentine -- with the Chipotle Hollindaise on the top. I expected spicy.. it wasnt .. there wasnt any spice of any kind... and the pepper on our table was completely out of pepper. Got a new one it was fine but the food definitly needed both salt and pepper. The potatoes on the other hand were seasoned and had great flavor. Several of the pieces were burnt but that's ok I dont finish french fies ever anyway. It says fries but I was pleasantly surprised they were more like potato chunks (or for my tejanos out there... papitas) and they were good.

It says "fruit on the side" this means Strawberries, bananas or oranges. We both went w/ Strawberry and they were good and sweet.

The bf had the "The day maker" and he loved it. basically biscuit covered w/gravy and bland eggs. he also said there was zero seasoning or spice on his eggs. The guy nxt to me.. he' was from CAlifornia visiting the guy across from me. .( remember i heard everyone's convos b/c i was less than a foot away from him - ordered gingerbread pancakes w/ chocolate chips and it looked divine. He didn't finish it but he said he liked it a lot. .

Would I go bk? yes I'd like to try something w/ bacon next time. i'll give them that the bacon looked delish - and to try the gingerbread pancake...

I love the Magnolia Cafe despite that it is falling apart, literally. The pancakes and breakfasts are to die for. Excellent southern fare or just delicious eggs benedict. All types of breakfasts, great bacon and sausage, no matter what. I wouldn't eat anything here but the breakfast. One disclaimer, this is down home grandma's style breakfast and not a culinary journey. It's comforting, fattening and yum!

Come to Magnolia for breakfast -- the rest of the menu is just filler.

There will be a wait on weekend morning, but it is rarely horrid -- the last few times I've stopped in about 9 and none of the waits have been longer than 20 minutes or so. There is free coffee outside, which helps.

The BF and I have settled into always ordering the same thing (ah-domesticity) Love Migas with extra tortillas. With the extra tortillas, this is more than enough for both of us to be stuffed and we even leave leftovers!

The atmopshere is quirky, and the hike and bike trail is a block away -- yanno, if you need to work some breakfast off. One of my favorite breakfast places in Austin!

Some restaurants are born mediocre, some restaurants achieve mediocrity, and some restaurants have mediocrity thrust upon them...deep shit right?

It's exactly how I feel about both locations of Magnolia Cafe. It's never blown my mind however it's never been an all out disappointing experience. From Migas to the Rubens to the Nachos, all the standards of a Greasy Spoon American diner with hip and trendy words that Austinites cream their pants for (ie Locally grown/Gluten free). Service is usually right in the middle, coffee is usually burnt and the wait came be soul draining.

Parking is a pain in the ass and the place is kinda dirty but when it's 3:00am and you don't don't want to drop the dough at 24 Dinner why not spend some time at Magnolia or as I like to call it So-So Cafe.

What amazing food is created here! Poblano Corn Chowder, Tuna Melt, Nachos, Breakfast Tacos, Fish Tacos (a little expensive though!), and Hibiscus Mint Tea were my orders here and I loved them all!

The set up is great! Walk up and sign your name on the waitlist (if there's a wait), then you'll be seated through door on the left where you'll find a breakfast diner set-up OR through door on the right (my favorite side) is more like evening diner set-up. Careful here because there are air vents all over and it gets pretty chilly.

And I'm not gonna lie - I'm so bummed there's no fryer here. I'd like some french fries with my sandwich instead of kettle chips because I already have nachos AND chips and salsa. Come on! It's the American culture in me. I need fried goodness sometimes. Most of the time.

Living right down the street, I have grown up eating at magnolia cafe. They consistently put out great food, mag mud, pancakes, enchiladas, eggs zapatino, just to name a few of my favorite menu items.

As consistent as the food is great, the service is the worst in Austin. Of the 50-100 times I have eaten at Magnolia over the years, I have had decent service only on rare occasion. The waitstaff is generally rude and more concerned about interacting with one another than taking care customers. Unless you have the patience to deal with inconsiderate people, I recommend steering clear of Magnolia.

Though I am disgusted by their service, I still eat at the restaurant because it is convenient and the food is very good. However, since the debut of 24-Dinner, I have been eating there a lot more and Magnolia a lot less.

I used to come here a lot. The food wasn't great, but fine for a late night fair. Sure, the wait staff isn't the friendliest, but I could deal with that.

However, these last couple times I went I got sick. I soon discovered why; they keep their restaurant VERY dirty. There were several cockroaches crawling around the dining area, and ants (some dead) in the sugar on my table. I pointed this out to the waitress, but she was unconcerned and did nothing about it. If they keep the dinning area like this, I can't even imagine what the kitchen looks like, or what hygiene the cook has.

I hope they clean up their act.

I have fond memories of Magnolia Cafe, and still love it today.  It's a great place to go after a workout or race downtown or on Lady Bird Lake.  It is also very popular late night after hours for some hearty food and coffee.

My best memories are 1) after the Austin Marathon - guilt free grazing!! 2) After a friends 40th birthday party downtown.   I could not move the next morning after both events!

I get the Migas, the kids get pancakes with chocolate chips and a side a thick cut bacon.  My wife lives for the Love Veggies and Breakfast Tacos.

All are all solid (the Migas are GREAT - check out the picture) and NOT overpriced.

So drag yourself into Magnolia's.  A good meal will help you feel better after a too long run or too much rum.

i really love this place. migas, huevos rancheros, mimosas, great coffee. i have been here only a couple times, first time being unaware of the great reputation this place had, and the second time being my recent vacation to austin. i asked my friend to take me here again, and we both looked forward to the return trip.

since they don't take reservations, you'll have to just take my word for it that the wait is worthwhile. if i were a more colorful writer you'd be getting a vivid description of the ambiance, but all i can tell you is just goooo and experience it for yourself.

Loved the chorizo migas! (it's a special, not on the menu), and the black beans, home fries, & chicken sandwich.

We've been here twice now - the second time we ate at the bar because the wait was so long. Still consistently good food. Since they didn't have the chorizo migas, we ordered original migas, love migas, and huevos rancheros, and we were all happy.

I also love the corn tortillas. And the OJ is good.

The service isn't anything to write home about, but you get what you need.

On our trip to Austin we used yelp to find a nearby place for "best breakfast".  As this wasn't the "best" it was still damn good!  We each had a tex-mex breakfast concoction ... Southwestern buritto with queso (huge portion), French toast, flaco tacos, and a buttermilk pancake with bananas and chocolate chips!

Pass on the French toast but everything else was fresh and tasty! The pancakes were actually this side of orgasmic!!! Yes really had a foodgasm!  :-)

LOVE MIGAS!!! That"s what I had and it was incredible. The "love" butter they use in their "love" dishes gives a spicy kick to the food. The tortillas are great too. Their unsweet tea has a ton a flavor as well. My dish came with beans and it was a very large portion of beans. I am not a bean fan at all so I don't really like a huge bunch of beans leftover on my plate (weird I know). If you don't want beans on your plate then make sure and mention it because otherwise you are going to get A LOT of beans.

We had chips with queso and salsa for an appetizer and both their salsa and queso is incredible! Highly recommend them!

If you are planning on going on a Sunday afternoon you better plan on waiting at least 30 minutes. Their were just two of us and I think we actually waited 45 minutes. However!................they do have a complimentary coffee bar for those who are waiting which I partook in.

All in all this is a great place and a good price.

I love diners. I love greasy spoons. I love the atypical old women who wait on you, foot tapping, attitude flying, make you feel slightly uncomfortable, kinda 'wait on you'.

The difference between 'that' woman and the waiters(and waitresses) here at Magnolia is that the woman tapping her foot at you is still hospitable. That while she may be indifferent, she doesn't ignore the living hell out of you. She won't walk by your empty coffee cup five times. That woman needs to buggy on up to Magnolia and teach this "waitstaff" the difference between diner hospitality and just plain 'ol sh***y service.

The pancakes are great- beats the heck outa Kerbey Lane's BakingSodaCakes. The syrup is real maple- kudos for that one.

So if you can spring for real maple syrup, why does your cheese come from Costco can?Short and sweet their queso needs work out the yin yang- it's straight up super thick and overly processed. Unpalateable. It belongs on ball park nachos- not served in a bowl with a queso label slapped on the side. Makes sense why all the regulars go for the Mag Mud. The queso needs to be loaded up, down, and sideways with other ingredients so you can swallow the dang stuff. Only thing worse than seeing Magnolia's queso once, is seeing it twice.(Eww, yeah, I went there)

On previous visits I've tried their pancakes, their Eggs Benedict(un-broken hollandaise woulda been nice), their standard eggs breakfasts(always cooked on point) and Pasta Caspian(which I don't recommend unless you relish pulling eight whole cloves of overly bitter, overly roasted garlic out of your pasta).

Pancakes aside, their food is just OK. The service has always been beyond horrible. It's not worth an out of the way drive unless, like the rest of the crowd this evening, you're stoned out of your mind and all you want is flour, eggs, milk, and sugar. Oh, and only one cup of luke-warm coffee.

I keep going back for the damned pancakes, but the staff has done me in and sent me on my final walk through their parking lot. I'll take the occasional pretentious hipster rallies, and random late night soccer mom get-togethers at Kerbey over Magnolia any day of the week.

Label me silly, but I like feeling welcome in an establishment where I'm spending my money.

Magnolia's Bloom - Mary Jane's Last Dance and Slow George brought me here for brekkie on our way to Town Lake. MJLD had the Gingerbread Pancake (one serious humongous flapjack) and she loved it. I had the breakfast tacos; two huge tacos full of egg, bean, potato, and cheese, all for a measly $3.50! Dude, TREE FITTY! And to think, I could've had an extra taco for a mere 50 cents, FITTY CENT! And to top it all off, Slow George found on Yelp, a Yelper's recommendation to try the Mag Mud appy: chips w/a bowl of goodness full of black beans, queso, avocado, and pico de gallo; SO GOOOD! Quaint decor accompanied by great vibe and great food. Due to my food coma, however, I was unable to make note of what Slow George had, and subsequently, now, cannot give a review of his choice; my bad. Thankfully, we were off to Town Lake for our 4 mile buzz on the path to burn off all the Maggie yumminess. Again, TREE FITTY for my awesome tacos!

NOTE: The signature dishes that were featured on Diners Drive-ins and Dives are not always on the menu.

I was disappointed to learn that when I came here after watching the TV show. These menu items are considered as specials and the chef cooks them on occasion when he feels like it.

However luckily we did get their jambalaya although it was not stuffed in bell peppers. The jambalaya came in a giant bowl big enough for two and tasted great. We also ordered the love migas and gingerbread pancakes. Both were good but nothing extraordinary.

You know, Ive been a faithful Magnolia's customer for about 5 years now. Yes, it is known that its service is below average, and yes, the food IS delicious (most of it, anyway). I still take my guests to magnolias fresh off the boat.

You may be wondering why it has taken me 5 years to write a review if I am so loyal. Well the answer is I've recently had the best experience EVER at this particular Magnolia location. Now, I've traveled far and wide, and eaten at many different kinds of places. But NEVER (and I do mean never) have I had waiter as awesome as Jeremi. I swear, the guy could be a successful stand up comedian. but the best part of about it is he was so good at his job. Not only was he the best server I've had at magnolias, he is the best server I've ever encountered. Period. His service was timely, respectful, attentive and entertaining. A mix that, in my book, is too good to be true.

Anyways, I just had to say that because if any of you kats ever get to be served by this guy, you'll know exactly why I went out of my way to write this.

For anyone who is debating whether to go to magnolias, you seriously cant go wrong here. Pancakes are the BEST in austin. Queso is top 5. Burgers are also up there (and I am not a burger liker). If we are going to be honest, then I'll tell you to stay away from the mexican food and the salads. But the rest is good.

    and its fun. Go!

Hmmm I'm not really sure how "updates" work but that's ok. I just thought I'd let the world know that the portabello mushroom quesadillas were probably the best quesadillas I've ever tasted in my life. And I'm a super duper meat eater. I really hesitate ordering meals without meat that have the option of meat. (Sorry if that comment didn't make any sense). Anyway, they were so good. I've now definitely decided to switch from eggs zapatino to the portabello mushroom quesadillas. Give 'em a shot!

Also the waitress was very nice!

AAAAAAAnd whenever I have friends from out of town visiting I always think of Magnolia Cafe because it's just a great Austin-y spot. I came on Wednesday with two girls from Maryland and we ordered the mag mud. They said it was the best queso they've ever had! (because it is)  The two ordered the chicken quesadillas and beef quesadillas. They really liked them as well! WOOO go Magnolia you have freakin sweet quesadillas!

I really loved Magnolia. I credit it to curing me from one of my most epic hangovers with what seemed like a flick of a switch.

There was a wait but patrons mingled and meandered out front until tables were ready - not a bad wait on a Friday AM.

Service was very friendly and upbeat - maybe that put me in a better mood too...

I got some spicy scrambler, doused some Sriracha on that and a purifying fresh squeezed grapefruit juice.

I will forever credit the spicy scrambler thing for curing my hangover and not try to replicate it back in the state of Cheeze n Brats....

It's 11pm and boyfriend and I wanted to try something new, so we decided on giving Magnolia a chance. We ordered the nachos, enchiladas, and some sort of pasta.
The nachos didn't seem fresh, and the meat and everything on top was really messy, and seemed to be sitting out for a while. By the time we received the nachos, it wasn't hot and was egh. I've had better.
My favorite Mexican dish are the enchiladas, but at Magnolias, once again, I was disappointed. It just didn't satisfy my taste buds.
Also my boyfriend had the pasta. The pasta was probably a better dish then the ones we ordered, except he only had about 4 small pieces of chicken and there were little chunks of some sort of veggie from which we thought were chicken but it was just a tease.

There is no better place to eat in Austin after hours. Love coming here for breakfast with my son after my band wraps up a late-night gig. The food is good and hearty, and even when it's busy it always seems to come out fast. The fresh-squeezed orange juice is GREAT, although a tall glass seems a little pricey.  Pancakes also are a specialty. Wait staff is consistently friendly and no-nonsense. Love it.

Magnolia Cafe beats Kerby Lane in my book because their waitstaff is considerably better. And while both places are super popular, I think Magnolia handles crowds a bit better. Also, they have a whole section of their menu devoted to omelets, and that's pretty rad. That being said, both Kerby Lane and Magnolia have tiny, tiny parking lots. Good luck finding a space there during peak times.

Magnolia is a great place to take your family to brunch, or to try to soak up the booze after some hard partying. The servers are totally able to handle large groups of people. Now go make all your problems disappear with a queso omelet.

I love small establishments. Hidden gems. When you pull up to one and you see a long line, you can take that as confirmation that the locals love the place and it's well worth your time.

Such was the case here.  We had a party of 7. We waited probably about 30 minutes before being seated. Once inside, we could see why. It's a small establishment. Much like an old school diner.  And I believe this specific location is the original Magnolia so it's no surprise.

I had a hard time picking from the list of amazing omelets but I settled on the Queso Omelet. OMG. BEST DECISION I MADE THAT DAY. It's an omelet filled with sliced avocados, red onions, Monterrey jack cheese and covered with their famous queso...I got to a point when I wasn't even hungry but I kept eating because it was so good.

This will be a staple on my list, whenever we get back to Austin.

A local Austin favorite, so it can be difficult to judge if a place is good, or if it's good because it's LOCAL.

In all honestly, I give it four stars for the food and service overall. I've never really had bad service here (I go to the one on South Congress though!) and I found the staff to be polite although certainly quirky. The breakfast food is good, their mag queso, cheese and hot sauce is delicious. But honestly, sometimes I go in here and don't even order the food.

The crowning glory of Magnolia is their Mag Brownie. It's delicious. It's beautiful. I can definitely bake brownies, I've made chocolate brownies from NYT recipes, but their brownie surpasses all of the above. It's the best brownie I've ever tasted. I order one Mag Brownie with ice cream (Mag Brownie: $3.95, Ice Cream: $1.95) and it's pretty much my dinner. It's so good, sometimes I can't even share it. I can defend the staff here because I came in and ordered just this, and they didn't even blink an eye or ask me if there was anything else.

Average food but service and atmosphere are lacking.  The location is what raises the review level.  If only they had better parking.

California Salad. Martian or Neptunian Landscape. Veggie Taco. Protabello Fajita.

My kids go for the kids' grill chicken plate. My daughter digs the "Sorry, we're open" sign. My 4 year old son does not get it yet. He keeps asking, "why are they sorry, mom?". Umm.....

I don't get this place. It reminds me of a Denny's or an IHOP. Not. My. Thing.

The gingerbread pancakes were dry and tasted like they were made from a mix. The fillings in my Magnolia omelet were good (avocado, tomato, cheese...but really, how can you screw that up?) but the actual egg part of the omelet was overcooked, dry, and tasteless.

I can make better pancakes at home. And pancakes are one of the easiest foods in the world to make, so....yeah.

Oh, our busboy was friendly and talkative, but the waiter was standoffish and acted like he was too cool for us...We're not likely to go back.

I went to Magnolia late Saturday night to have "brinner" with my girlfriend and really regretted that decision. The service was good, no complaints there, but the food was just disappointing. The migas were a mess that looked like stir fry with some egg and tortilla chips thrown in and the queso on my omelette tasted bland like Velveeta. If not for the buttermilk pancakes, it would have been a disaster.

Their food is good - very diner-esque with a few Tex Mex touches!!! I love their salsa and their peanut butter pie!!!

Mags is a great go-to place for hung-over brunchers or, for late-night drunk food. There is something for everyone there - kids, grown ups, 30-somethings like us, too! Even my momma likes it!

It does have the Austin grungy-hippie vibe - something that I did not understand when I first visited Austin many years ago. Now that I've moved away, I am sad that there is no Mags :(

Good food, great prices, and cozy ambiance. This is a great place for brunch. The service was good and we had a large order that got out quickly. All the fruit was perfectly ripe. The coffee is bottomless.
Also: re breakfast- the pancakes are HUGE! Way bigger than your face. Just so you know.
The one con is the fact that it's a small cozy place... and therefore non-peak visits are recommended if you want to park and not have to wait outside. We went on a Sunday at 9 am and took the last 2 parking spots in the lot. It's a neat location with good proximity to the hike and bike trail, obviously.
    Yum! I'd sure go back!!
