I was looking for my first short, sassy cut, and Roxanne was the one to do the job as recommended by a friend. She helped me go through a couple styles I picked explaining to me what would be most flattering for my face, and how it would eventually grow out.
When it was time to snip my locks away, she didn't keep it short and sweet. Roxanne took her time to perfect my do and described to me along the way what she was doing, which kept me at ease. (I was getting my hair cut Halle Berry short!)
After the job was done, she showed me how to style it and sent me on my way with smiles. The way I see it: Short cuts are a bit more challenging. If they aren't done correctly, it is much more noticeable than in longer hair. I'm rest assured she did a great job from the compliments I got from a couple girls walking through the mall the next day and my friends!
No doubt I will return to see Roxanne aka Ms. Congeniality again. This professional stylist knows what she is doing, and you'll leave feeling like new money! -
Review from Diana W.
Roxanne, she doesn't wear the red dress, just rocks the red hair! I could sing her praises from here to eternity, but I'll keep it short and sweet.
She's a doll. Girl's a genius with the shears. Took my boring, longer, soccer mom (read safe) hair to a piecey modified A line and brought my cool factor back. Gotta love it! She's helpful, suggests ideas, and is considerate to your style and comfort level with going extreme.
I found Magic Salon on Yelp, took our fellow Yelpers for their merit and was WAY happy with my decision! Since moving here from LA recently I hadn't found a place to get a cut I loved. I have it now. Will definitely be back in a few weeks for some maintenance on it. I wouldn't hesitate to try any of the stylists there, they all seem friendly and cool...just like you're gonna be when you get there. So hurry up! Have fun with your hair, you only go 'round once, yo.... -
Review from Pon K.
I started coming here back in December for eyelash extensions. I'm Asian so I have short straight lashes :( My niece recommended I try eyelash extensions... She's obsess with long curly eyelashes. She had hers done for the 2nd time here and it looked really look. The 1st time not so good...they used straight lashes on her...??? 2nd time she got them done...still at Magic Salon but by a different person. Mason used pre-curled lashes and it came out fabulous. So I booked my appt with Mason (the owner). I would say it takes about 75 - 85 minutes...depending on how many lashes you need.
Arriving at the Salon... Walked in the door and Mason was right there to greet me. Which was awesome! The Salon is open and clean. Very chill...not like those other snobbish Salons. Mason escorted me to the back and into this small blue room with no windows. Trust me it's better this way. You will have your eyes closed for about an hour or so. No distractions! You're going to want to open your eyes to see who is walking in and out of the Salon. Being stuck in that small room is good for you. You don't want glue in your eyes. I know what you're thinking... You have to keep your eyes closed for an hour?! The hour actually goes by pretty quickly. Mason keeps you pretty entertained...with his stories.
My eyelashes came out great! I wake up every morning looking fresh and beautiful. Thanks Mason!!! -

I've been coming to Mason for over 4 years and he has created a great bond with my unmanageable hair. I will never dare go to another hair stylist!

Review from Katie S.
I got my first hair cut at Magic last week with Casey and he did a really good job! My hair hasn't been cut for a really long time, and Casey did a great job layering and cutting off my bad ends. I felt like my head was a pound lighter afterwards lol. I showed him a picture of the hair cut I wanted (Ashlee Simpson lol) and he gave me something pretty similar, which I really appreciated since I usually end up with a cut that looks nothing like the picture... I'll probably come back in 2 weeks for a bangs trim, which is free!
P.S. Magic looks really dark from outside and I missed it twice. Look for a store with very dark tinted windows and a small white sign "Magic." Inside, its very colorful, urban, and hipster tho, very different from most salons! =D -
Review from Naida E.
I am so happy to have found my hair stylist! Mason rocks. I love my hair, the shampoo experience with scalp massage, the music selection and the customer service. Magic his wife knows how to make customers happy, as well. Fair rates and convenient parking only add to the Yes! of the experience. I also appreciate the location, as I am a Oak Park girl all the way; live, work and play in the OP. My only suggestion would be house wine/beer for customers, but that's superfluous.

This is the first time I've Yelped about something other than a dining experience but it occurred to me, I suppose even before my stylist brought up some good points, that a salon is somewhat of an experience as well. While I joked that I may only give zero stars, then assured him that it doesn't matter since I only write about restaurants, he said something along the lines of
If you use the website, you write reviews, you should review our place too.
Or something like that. I was probably drunk. After which I replied
Fuck you.
Or maybe I said "good point" I can't remember.
I just moved to Sac so finding a new salon was priority number 783 which I got to eventually. Magic Salon is open and welcoming, each station adorned with cartoon personalities, pink Christmas lights, stickers, a line up of PEZ dispensers or better, a Scott Pilgrim sticker. In essence, it's totally hipster without really being hipster, mostly it's just genuinely cool. From the purple ceiling fans, to the zine I got to read while my hair dried, to the fact that my hair stylist played Weezer's Pinkerton during my haircut simply because we were talking about it.
My stylist was Casey, a long haired, musician with a Weezer t-shirt and a strong affinity for the Smashing Pumpkins.
I did an all over color, an awesome fucking red that actually looks kind of burgundy in the sun, straight bangs, and some layers in the back. I adore the new style and he seemed quick, efficient, creative and easy going. My hair has great bounce and shine, my bangs look great, the color is perfect and the conversation was delightfully filled with horrible jokes and friendly exchanges about live shows, music, and... ahem... the Smashing Pumpkins... gross, Casey, gross.
Despite this, I will certainly be back for the quality, affordable cuts (100 bucks for all over color and full cut) and interesting folks. Ever since my awesome haircut I'm feeling FRAIL AND BEDAZZLED.

Sonya gave me lash extensions about two weeks ago and I am wowed. She took 2 hours to apply them, and her services are very reasonable. They look real, feel comfortable, and are still perfectly intact. I have stumbled upon a new addiction, they really look great, and I find that I don't need to wear any makeup, I just wake up looking awesome!

Finally! I gave in and got my lashes done...and Mason did an amazing job. I was quite impressed since years ago I was scarred from a really bad experience with my lashes and they all went missing. But nonetheless I'm so happy with how they turned out! I was really excited too because when I went in they had a special on their lash extensions so instead of the normal $80 they're going for $50! So get them while they're hot ladies because they are well worth it.

I can't believe I haven't yet wrote a review for this place..But let me tell you all that my rating is only based on the eyelash extentions, since I've only came to Magic for that purpose. I'm sure their great in their hair aspect's as well.
So I've gone here for a couple of year(s) for my eyelash extentions. I started out coming here and getting them done with Mason - He's amazing, and boy does he have alot of interesting stories to tell ya! Mason is very precise and gets every individual lash I had. They always came out looking nice and natural, best part is they don't feel or look heavy! A few months into it Sonia started doing the lashes as well, and of course I gave her a try. She does a great job herself, I love the work of them both!
The prices are very reasonable especially for eyelashes ($80 of intial extentions $40 for fills after). You can't beat the price they charge, elsewhere they range from 100 and up. I've always left pleased with my lashes and what's even better is they stay late for my appts knowing that I get off late. Sonia has waited to see me at 5pm before and even when she's on her last client she still manages to squeeze me in if need be, last minute that is.
I've come to realized though $40 a month to get fills add up espeically when the lashes tend to fall of quite quickly for me after getting them done consecutivly every 3 weeks =( I'd get fills atleast twice a month if not 3 times, so I've stopped going for awhile to let my lashes grow back to its natural length and i've also switched to Latisse which is working amazing well for me. So i'm sad to say i won't be going to Magic anymore for my extentions since latisse works - it's natural, and the maintence on it is well...much cheaper - $120 for a box that lasts up to 5 months. However if in case I need it done again or choose to get them done Magic salon will definately be my place to go! I love you guys all at Magic, keep up the good work!! -
Review from Nisa N.
I've been going to Magic for a few months now, mainly for eyelash extensions. I'm an Asian girl with lash envy; blame it on my cousin with the long, curly lashes (I hate you Dena!!!). That being said, I've had eyelash extensions twice before at Mosaic salon. Real talk... they sucked! Mind you, my lashes are naturally short and straight so what is the point of putting longer, straight lashes on me? they were just long and in the way of my vision. Mason at Magic uses pre-curled lashes, and he is meticulous about getting them on correctly so they adhere for as long as they can. I usually see him every 3-4 weeks. I love the lash extensions because as I like to put it, "I wake up pretty". I rarely wear makeup so these give me the little "pop!" I need on a daily basis.
After growing out my beautiful balayage highlighted hair for over a year now, I woke up one day with the urge to cut my hair and color it red, and Mason was the guy to help me achieve it. Everyone went crazy over my new cut and color. My only gripe was that afterwords, I found a small snippet of hair that he missed. I fixed it with some fabric scissors.
Given how much time I spend with Mason (at least an hour every appointment), I find the conversation is never dull. He's a pretty cool guy. We talk about all sorts of stuff (fishing, Tea Party, shrooms, etc.) and he's really easy to get along with and talk to.
The best part about this place are the prices. $40 for lashes and my cut and color were less than $100 total! That's unbelievable but not so much considering they are not in the grid. He even gives me free bang trims, and if you book your next appointment while you're there you receive 10% off your next service.
And Magic (receptionist) is soooo sweet and cute! I love chatting with her before and after my appointments and she's great with getting back to you if she misses your call. -

Love my hair. I came to get my haircut last weekend, and always Justine does a great job. Magic salon is open during the weekend, but usually by appointment.
If you're unsure how you like your hair, just come in and talk to Justine. Describe what you like and she will do it.
Walk-in are welcome, but you might not get Justine b/c she is usually booked...Just call in. If they don't pick up the phone, then leave a message to book with Justine and they will call you back. It usually mean that everyone is busy cutting someone's hair. You wouldn't like it if your hair stylist stop in the middle and pick up the phone....
The experience at this salon is great...1 Previous Review: Show all »

I really like this place. No one gives you attitude or think they are some kind of hair elitest like some posh salons in midtown. They even offer you coffee or tea while you're there.
Sonya usually cuts my hair and she does a fine job but i recently decided i needed a trim right when i woke up so i just walked in without an appointment and Christina was my stylist since Sonya was busy.
Christina is the new stylist and she was awesome! She was really friendly and even gave me tips on how to style my stupid flat hair so it gets a lot of volume. The price is very reasonable compared to other salons, too. $35 for a wash & cut. -

I went in yesterday to get my hair cut for the first time in a year (I have trust issues when it comes to someone chopping off my locks!). I wasn't sure where to park because the only sign I saw was a long banner that said "Magic" and I couldn't see the sign inside the salon. But I eventually figured it out and went in, where I got teased a little because of it :)
I had asked for Mason, due to everyone's praises about him on Yelp, and I am very happy I did. He took in everything I told him about what I wanted and succeeded in giving me a great haircut! I like it even more today, especially because I can really see the texturing he did to the ends.
Mason's great to talk to (we discussed clowns and circuses and Halloween shenanigans!) and the whole salon is so unpretentious, which I love! I hate salons where all the stylists have their scissors shoved up their you-know-whats and think their shit don't stink. Just because they're charging me $70 for a cut doesn't mean they can do a good job. For $35, I got an awesome haircut in a chill, fun environment.
I will definitely be back here, hopefully sooner than another year! -

I've been to many salons and even more stylists over the years, but it wasn't until I had my first cut and color by Mason that I knew I was done looking - and that was almost a year ago.
Is it horrible to admit I was reluctant to post on Yelp in fear I would have to wait in line for my next appointment? (-=
Mason is truly gifted with color and cut, he's a great listener as well as an interesting conversationalist. His wife, Magic, oversees the front desk and is truly a sweetheart - the two of them make a great team!
Besides loving my hair and the people behind it, I love this salon. It's far from the pretentious, uptight salons I've been to in the past (so, if you look for that in a salon, this is not the place for you!)
Overall, a great value and experience! -

Oh Justine, how can I ever let you know how much i just adore you and your mad scissor skills. oh! i know! ill come back and be your regular each month! Done!
Justine is the bestest. Each month I come in, she knows exactly how to cut my hair and what length to cut it to. I never seem to remember these little details that are so important and yet she remembers each time. Saves the umms and hmmm..how short was it last time's for another time with a different person.
She introduced me to new hair products that I love...and as soon as my costco sized shampoo is used, I'm so getting that teatree shampoo. she didn't push me to buy products, rather she let me try out a sample at home so i could use it for a couple showers and see how my hair and scalp benefits after a couple uses.
go justine! and please, dont' be crazy booked whenever I'd like to see you. -

These guys are what I've been looking for my whole life. When my stylist moved out of town I was very sad. I knew I needed to find someone but am a little picky when it comes to my hair. Plus I wanted something affordable. I would rather have a cheap haircut than a fancy salon that gives me a glass of wine. I don't even like wine.
A friend recommended Magic. I was able to get a same-day appointment with Casey. He was so sweet and when I saw his bitchin' haircut I knew he was my guy. He was attentive and totally paid attention to everything I said. If I asked for advice he gave it happily but ultimately my haircut was totally up to me. The salon has a very laid back atmosphere and there was a couch where my daughter was invited to play video games while I got my hair done! PLUS they gave me water PLUS it was affordable ($35 plus tip). I will never look for another salon as long as I live in this town.
Thank you, Casey!! -

Got my hair cut here by Jennelle in September I think? I know...I'm late as always. I like to get my Yelp on in bursts, all-nighter, case of red bull bursts. Jennelle was awesome. I told her I wanted to chop it all off and send it to Locks of Love. Magic Salon already works with this charity and she bundled up my hair neatly and lopped it all off. See I was just going to braid it and use garden shears. Thank goodness I didn't take matters into my own hands, though I'm sure she's talented enough to fix even the craziest of messes. I'm glad I let her handle things. They even helped me mail it to the charity, which was a double plus. Mailing hair always makes me feel like psycho stalker chick, not that I've ever done this before...
Anyhow, Jennelle made my hair lighter and more appropriate for that sticky, sweaty heat that I just couldn't stand anymore. She did an amazing job and I had fun chatting with her during the process. She also told me that they do free bang trims in between appointments. Too bad I'm kind of a once every year or so salon girl. I should really make a habit of getting groomed. When I was growing out my hair for Locks of Love, I was trimming it myself. It was a hot mess. If I ever find the time, I'll be sure to come back and make an appointment with her. Just want to leave a shout out for her here so others can know how awesome she is.
Oh yea, I was also pretty desperate that day for a cut because of the crazy heat. They fit me right in on the same day within 30 min from when I called. Pretty sweet! -

No, it's not enough.
You knock down someone's rating, someone who has worked his ass off to learn his trade and start his own business, over something so arbitrary? Ridiculous!
I've had Mason cut my hair for years now. He's cut my hair in his basement, at a salon in Oak Park, at Alley Cuts and now at Magic Salon. Mason can do any style. He worked hard to learn how to cut EVERY type of hair. He can give great advice and help you figure out what you want to do with your hair. And he'll cut it how you want it, even if you go in and ask for a foo-foo haircut on your head, as I've done many times. This guy is the real deal. Service, style, artistry and he is a great guy as well.
The salon is the coolest. Hang out with Magic, have an espresso, read MAD magazine and you'll end up wanting to hang out even after the cuttin' is done.
Maybe they'll build a proper website soon. I could really care less.Listed in: My Neighborhood

I have been wanting to write this review for months but kept putting it off because I felt like I was the ONLY one that had a bad experience at Magic.
Magic and her husband are AMAZING and sweet, kind and loving and the atmosphere is so laid back, and I so loved that, yet I really needed a great cut and color. What I received instead was the most jacked up hair color/cut I have ever had!
When I came in, they didn't have me scheduled, and then gave me to the new girl, even though my appointment was with Mason. She FUCKED up my hair. I was there for FIVE hours and all I wanted was a little more blond and a a-line cut. When I was done my hair was orange and choppy. I had to leave, I mean five hours?
I called the second I was able to get to a phone and they were really nice about fixing the cut and color. I came in a couple of days later and the owner sort of fixed my hair, but made a comment about if I would have stayed longer she could have fixed it. WTF? five hours isn't long enough?
It took months to get over my scalp burn, screwed up orangish hair and totally uneven hair cut. I would never go back. I was really pissed off at the attitude that it was somehow my fault. They tried to correct my hair, but it still was horrible and they never offered to refund my money. It as a huge waste of time and expense, which I don't have much of. -

So, I decided to try out Magic Salon after having a bad experience at another salon downtown. I actually got an email from Magic telling me about this new cool down-to-earth salon. I say hey, what the heck and I make an appointment with a stylist named Michelle. It was a little awkward at first sitting there and only three other people actually in the room.
When Michelle takes me back to her chair, she seems a little uncomfortable and clueless. I was hoping for some cutting ideas, but it wasn't coming. We decided to do an A-line type cut with layering in the back and red highlights. I guess they call it "stacking". So during the cut, my stylist is nervous and keeps dropping her scissors. She also hit me in the nose multiple times. I guess I wasn't really thinking when I asked for red highlights because she proceeded to place them directly OVER my old-regrowth. Even on top of my grays! I guess I just never realized I always did a base color before or something. So she cuts the stacking into the back, and I can tell she is having trouble with my difficult hair. She stacks it WAY too much and I end up with a shelf like thing on the back of my head. Not good.
I try to give it a few weeks to see what happens. The red highlights completely wash out and the cut looks even worse when it grows out a little bit. I call to make another appointment, and I express my dissatisfaction with the cut/color. There is really no response or an apology from either the receptionist or the stylist. Even when I tell my stylist that I am not happy with the highlights, she basically just shrugged her shoulders. So we go ahead and dye the whole thing red, and she ends up cutting the back even worse. At this point I know I will not be coming back. If I am going to blow $150 bucks on a hair cut with highlights, it needs to be done right!
I had to walk around with a Christmas Tree hairstyle for almost a year as it slowly grew out, it was awful.
Edited to add: The stylist's name was Michelle B which is NOT related to the Michelle currently employed there now. Just want to make that clear! -

I found Magic Salon on Yelp, when I was desperate for a haircut and needed a change from the stylist I'd been seeing for quite some time. I was eight months pregnant and HAD to have a change. Magic was able to get me on the schedule really quickly, and Mason gave me a haircut that I LOVE. It has been so easy to take care of -- and looked good through my last month of pregnancy, labor and birth! Now that I'm starting to get back to everyday life I will go back and see what Mason can do next for me. This haircut has made me feel sexy and pulled together despite all the post partum hormones!
The salon was hip and urban, tucked away in a little building off of Franklin Blvd. and Freeport/12th Avenue. There's a lot of original art and decor, and the funky, comfortable vibe was welcoming and relaxing. Not as relaxing as Mason's head massage, though! If I won the lottery, I'd book Mason to wash my hair every day.
Something I really like about the salon is that Magic and Mason are open on Sundays -- really rare for a salon of this quality.
In short, I'm a loyal Magic Salon client now, and can't wait to go back for my next cut.Listed in: Salons & Spas

Review from Lisa C.
So after getting my haircut here, I didn't know how to feel...disliked it? it's ok? it's shorter than I hoped? why'd I do that? I had mixed feelings.
I'm really particular about my hair, since I think I look ridiculous with hair shorter than my shoulders, which was the mistake I made last August. So after months of growing it out, I was starting to dread the hairballs in the bathroom, the blow drying, the outgrown bangs, the dead ends....it's always a love-hate relationship with the hair. Since I have a wedding to attend and a Hawaii trip coming up at the end of May, I decided I really need a cut.
My sister is a regular here and sees Mason for her cut. I also did my research on Yelp. I originally wanted to come here for the recession Wednesday deal ($20), but really wanted to try Mason, who doesn't work on Wednesdays. I decided to pay the regular price and I'm glad I tried Mason. I showed him a few pictures, told him what I wanted, and he gave his opinion. I felt comfortable, as he understood what I was asking. I still wanted to keep the length, but he suggested a trim all around, and to lose some of the bulk.
After working his magic and seeing my hair on the ground, I was quite sad (every time I lose hair, I get a little sad just because my hair doesn't grow fast). Mason did a good job blowing my hair out and even styled it. He even gave tips on how I can style it at home.
Immediately after leaving, I wasn't blown away with the cut. But it's been a week now, and I do like it. I guess I found my own way of styling it. It definitely is easier to maintain since I lost bulk. It's not a dramatic cut, but it's also somewhat different. -
Review from Jess C.
I was tempted to hold back a review of Magic Salon for fear of having Mason innundated with customers, but I feel like for the good of the community I have to concur with every other 5 star rating. Mason is wonderful and he has given me newfound trust in stylists other than the one I had been going to for the past 10+ years.
The salon is much more hipster, punk-rock than you'd think. It's a little hard to find, but it's on the intersection of 12th and Franklin. While Mason owns the place, he rents space to all the other stylists - so don't assume that you can just pick any person to cut your hair. Hair color seems to be their forte here, but I loved my hair cut and it was super affordable.
Also, they have free espresso drinks - what more could you ask for?? Thank you Mason for an awesome haircut!! -

Mason is the man. In five minutes, he took my suggestions, showed me a few pics in a magazine, and then presto - he was on his way to giving me a quality cut.
I'm not sure what exactly it was, but I was never as nervous as I usually am when I go to a brand new place to get a haircut. He is very chill and better yet, pretty damn talented. None of the chainsaw-massacre-like approaches with clippers here...instead, he worked like Edward Scissorhands for a solid twenty minutes to give me the cut I wanted. All in all, I ended up with a cut that looked better and better with each passing day and I never regretted going here.
It's just too bad that I can't talk myself into putting this much change into every cut, mainly b/c my hair grows faster than weeds and I need to get it cut literally every 2.5-3 weeks. That being said, if I win the lottery, or finish my training (whichever comes first), I'll be sure to dedicate my winnings to the Magic Salon, a very worthy cause indeed. -

I have simple requests when it comes to my hair. But, for some reason it's hard to find people who listen to you and just do as you ask. Not here! I'm so happy to have found Justine who is super friendly, did exactly what I wanted and didn't take all day doing it! I totally feel confident going back to her if I ever decide to take the plunge and add some color to my mop.
The vibe here is also really laid back and relaxed which I love! -

This is only an eyelash extension review! I'm sure all the reviewers have gotten fabulous haircuts and scalp massages, but the eyelash extensions are pretty bad.
I have been to several places for eyelash extensions, and I'm just not impressed at all with Magic Salon's. They look sparse and and seem to all be the same length (even thought your natural eyelashes would taper off nearer to the bridge of your nose. They are less expensive than a lot of the posh midtown places (which also don't do eyelashes particularly well) so if' you're choosing between fancy J Street places and Magic, it's not a bad way to go. But my recommendation is to venture further into South Sac, and find a Fancy Nails location - they do a great job for $60. -

They did such a good job on my hair..the lady who did my hair is named Ciara and I had black dye in my hair and wanted blond high lights and she got the black to lift out without killing my hair or turning it orange...and then she gave it a cute cut with layers and pretty bangs...ooo la la!
I am definitely going to be a regular :-D -

I normally LOVE Magic Salon, and Mason does great work with my hair! He even agreed to do some more experimental things with it that he normally doesn't do. Obviously, I was super excited to go in for this new look!
Unfortunately, someone dropped the ball in rescheduling my appointment from a Friday to a Monday and never actually changed it in their calendar. As bad luck would have it, the salon's harddrive crashed the day before my old appointment, so no one ever called to confirm. Concerned I didn't get a confirmation call on Sunday, the day before my appointment, I called to make sure everything was still okay, only to find out I had popped up as a "no show" for a Friday appointment I had rescheduled over a month ago.
I have a really tight schedule these days and purposefully made appointments around my Monday appointment because I was so excited to have this new look. I'm really sad that I had such a bad experience on the phone, mostly because I was made to feel as if I had done something terribly wrong, that it was my fault for not showing up, and that I was lying to try to get out of a "no show" tag on my appointment. I explicitly remember rescheduling my appointment because as soon as I got home (happy with my cut!) at the beginning of August, I looked at my calendar and realized I would not be able to make an appointment on this past Friday.
This experience combined with a friend's lackluster cut after lackluster cut (that has necessitated a return to fix) has made me question whether I can go back to Magic, which is a huge bummer because I normally love this place!
UPDATE: I just got off the phone with Magic, and she was very nice -- the treatment I was expecting the first time around. My appointment is rescheduled. Just as a note, I still think Mason is a great stylist, and this review was simply about my experience with an appointment mishap, which can be useful in evaluating the customer service of a place.1 Previous Review: Show all »

So i was in a total slump about the status of my overgrown A-line, and anyone who has ever dealt with one of these cuts grown out knows how miserable it can become. My front layers were literally down to my chest while the back was on a limbo between my neck and shoulders. awful.
On a whim, i visited my best friend who lives in Sacramento. My persistent hair disaster was nagging in my mind when I woke up, and the sticky Sacramento heat wasn't helping either. I made the decision to face the ax right then and there.
Thanks to trusty Yelp I found this UHH-mazing little gem in a totally conspicuous neighborhood of Curtis Park. I walked in, all the stylists looked pretty rad, and the owner of the place even made me some extra dark iced coffee to sip while i got myself nice and renovated. My stylist Mahriya (with a name as cool as that, how could I resist!?) was fun, quirky, and listened to exactly what I wanted. The thing is, my wishes were so vague ("I want it boysih but not TOO boyish" lol) that it was clear Mahriya had to take matters into her own hands. Or shears, for that matter.
The end result was gorgeous, I pretty much went from below shoulder length to an ultra sexy pixie with side swept bangs. Rihanna eat your heart out!!!!
Its been a month and my hair is even growing out nicely, and that alone makes me yearn for a 6-star option here on yelp. But alas, the conclusion is that magic salon really can do magic to your do. And Mahriya is amazing, I havent found another stylist who can do such a daring cut on me without hesitating.
(damn---would be 7-stars for the little old school nintendo system they had sitting in the corner---aka your impatient friends will wanna live here while you get your cut.) -

Awesomeness. Simply put, I walked in with a mop of hair that I was not very pleased with, gave Mason a general idea of what I wanted, and left the salon with EXACTLY the style I have been wanting for a long, long time.
I found the place to be inviting and not off-putting at all; very un-salony in that regard, which I liked. Mason not only showed that he is a wiz with the siz (did I just say that?), but he is also a very friendly and interesting cat as well.
Magic indeed, and very recommended. -

Update: I was contacted directly by the salon's owner within an hour aftr writing my review. She was very concerned about my perception of the salon. She explained the circumstances that had occured, and got me for a bang trim within a few hours - and didn't charge me as a show of good customer service. Further, when I went to book my haircut for a few weeks from now, she told me about a special they have - "Recession Wednesdays" where haircuts are $20 and hair color is 20% off. So I am very impressed that she addresses my concerns immediately. That is rare from businesses these days.
I hate to give a business 1 star before I have even GONE there. Here is the deal, I decided to try a new salon because I am just over Lush. I actually just moved to Curtis Park, so I am less than 5 minutes from Magic Salon, and saw all of the great reviews on here, and even referred my boss there from the reviews (she loves it). So now that I am all settled from my move and ready to focus on my hair, I gave them a call. Granted it was on a Saturday, and I know they are by appointment only, so I got the machine. I left a message. It is now Tuesday, I have not received a phone call back, and have tried calling twice, and received the answering machine both times (both calls were between the hours of 9am and 5pm). Do actual people work there?? Sucks because I really need at least my bangs trimmed before this weekend :(. I guess I have to suck it up and go deal with Lush. -

Bad haircuts can reduce me to a weeping mess, which makes me ultra picky when finding a new stylist. I read all the amazing reviews here on yelp and scheduled an appointment with Mason at Magic Salon. They were able to schedule me within the week.
I had a great experience here. Mason was efficient, friendly, personable, knowledgeable, polite, and a good listener. The salon is clean, eclectic, filled with great music, and has tons of fun reading material.
I came on a Monday and even without the Wed specials, prices are ridiculously awesome! $35 for a cut.
The neighborhood is perfectly fine. The Salon is awesome, and Mason was amazing! I'm am so happy that I finally found "my" salon. -

You may question why my review is rated so low, the truth is Justine lost me as a client. I have skimmed over the many positive reviews she has received and rightfully so, she DOES deserve them. She is infact a good hair stylist. But I simply want to share my experience as I never thought it would happen...
Over my year and a half of being her client, I thoroughly enjoyed coming to her. She's an awesome girl with some mad scissor skills topped off with great conversation. I have never been disatisfied by her services, until now. Like all of these people that have given such positive reviews, I too felt just like them! Justine can do no wrong! I take my hair very seriously as well as my relationship with my hair dresser, because lets face it, its very difficult to find someone with talent. Justine has the talent. Last night I was scheduled for an appointment at 6pm, and I got off work 10 minutes early so that I was sure to get there on time. Unfortunately, life happens and there happened to be a major traffic jam on the 5. So here I am in stop-and-go traffic, finally deciding to cut off on J street to get to 99. Well unfortunately this entire ordeal made me 15 mins late. I arrive somewhat flustered after trying so hard to get there. When I walk in she looked at me and said "You're going to kill me, I called my next client and they're already on their way." I was so upset that I was speechless, because I've never been in a "customer service" sort of situation where I've actually been mad. But because I care about my hair so much and the fact that I have waited a week for this appointment, I was mad. I was also wondering where my phone call was? She was certainly able to call her next client, does that make her incapable of calling me and asking me where I am at? In my defense I did text her, but it turns out she had changed her number. And anyway, I am the customer, and I am also a paying customer... oh and I tip, therefore it's on her. She immediately had a second appointment set up for me on Saturday, and because I was so shocked and appalled at what just happend, I took it and left. I am the type of person that prefers to handle a situation as diplomatic as possible. That being said, I did not create a scene. When I got home and stewed about it, I remembered the few times that I have had to wait at least 15 minutes for her to finish on a client. No big deal to me! I also remember when she called and canceled on me when she was sick after I waited two weeks for that appointment... again, no big deal, life happens! And lastly, I CANNOT remember a time when I've actually been late for her.
My point is, Justine showed to me that she really didn't care, and to be honest, that hurt. Her level of service that she wishes to provide is at her discretion. I do understand she too was probably frustrated with me, but that's the nature of the business. If you want to keep your clients, treat them well, if not, then don't. Unfortunately it had to come to this, but I canceled my appointment and thanked her for everything. I have since scheduled a new one with someone else that is highly reviewed, and I'm very excited. No hard feelings to Justine, I just wanted to share my experience.
P.S. I will say one thing that absolutely irritates me about this salon, NO ONE EVER ANSWERS THE PHONE. So if people want to ask me why I didn't call and say I was running late? Welp... there's your answer folks. They don't answer the phone. -

So, I have now lived in Sacramento for 3 years and finally I have a great salon in Magic Salon!
I have tried a number of salons in mid/downtown and the frilly atmosphere really gets on my nerves (and high prices for not-so-good haircuts!), so when I saw the reviews on Magic Salon on Yelp, I decided to try them today when an appt somewhere else got canceled. I got a last minute appt with Michelle who was really nice and did an AWESOME job with my thin straight hair (I have a very hard time getting people to cut my thin, yet bountious hair!). She was very patient with me in getting the cut that I wanted (two rounds of, "can we take off a little more length") and she obviously knows what she is doing.
I have to say I was a little nervous going in because I'm a 40 year old not so trendy gal .... looking for a good hair cut, but no pink stripes (yet), and I was worried that the salon might be a little too "hip" for me, based on the web site. The salon does have a hip feel, but as another reviewer stated, it's also more casual than some of the stuffy mid, downtown and East Sac Places. Also much better music!!!! (bluesy tunes on the sound system while I was there). And best of all, a GREAT haircut for a reasonable price ... and from what what I read on Mason, and from talking to Michelle, I'm sure this salon can get as hip as you desire for those wanting to go beyond the basic cut. To get all this in a nice, welcoming place is great (Mason seems very nice also).
The extra added benefit of this salon for me is that, since I live in Tahoe Park (South of 50 on the other side of Oak Park) I didn't have to venture across the freeway to the parking madness of mid/downtown. I enjoy supporting businesses that are growing on this side of 50.
Anyway - A+ on this one! High, high recommendations! From what I understand, this salon is a new (March 2007) venture for Mason, so get in there and get a great cut, color, or whatever, and support this great new salon! I already made my December appointment ... -

I torn between putting a review up here for the sake of adding it to my Yelp list and to make sure that this place stays in business... and not putting one up so that you people don't make it any more difficult to get an appointment with Mason.
I can only write for experiences with Mason, which have been great. Twice I've gone to get my haircut, and each time I've had great results. The place looks really uh... un-salony?.... but it's not fuss, no frills, and good cuts and good prices. I'm never paying $70 at an expensive salon for a haircut again. Not worth it when my hair is thin and fine. Here I think the cuts are only $35 or something.
I don't know about getting anything else done here thought. I'm a fan of AVEDA colour, so I go get that done elsewhere. But for a cut, I always travel here. -

I just returned from Magic and I love it. My hair looks awesome and (I'm so going to butcher my loverly stylists name..and I asked her twice. Sorry) Sierna was FAN-FRIEEKN-TASTIC!! I have finally found a place that will give my head the attention it deserves!

So okay, I have a problem. I am a cutter ...of my own hair. I use carpet razor blades to just kind of thin out the giant mass of hair that is frowing out of my head in a football helmet like fashion.
I had a great hair lady for years and years and now she is gone so the hunt has begun for a new one.
Well I believe I have found her at Magic Salon. Let me jsut say that the atmosphere is great. Not that uncomfortable silence or weirdness that can accompany some salons or hair styling facilities.
This place is cool and you feel kinda like you are in some hangout spot getting your hair done. Eclectic music spanning a large expanse of genres, perhaps not all your exact cup of joe but just wait, there is something new just moments away.
So I had resorted to managing the "do" on my own sometimes successfully and sometimes not so successfully. But here they simply repair the damages done and judge not.
THANK YOU Sonya!!! I will definitely be back. -
