I have simple requests when it comes to my hair. But, for some reason it's hard to find people who listen to you and just do as you ask. Not here! I'm so happy to have found Justine who is super friendly, did exactly what I wanted and didn't take all day doing it! I totally feel confident going back to her if I ever decide to take the plunge and add some color to my mop.
The vibe here is also really laid back and relaxed which I love!
Awesomeness. Simply put, I walked in with a mop of hair that I was not very pleased with, gave Mason a general idea of what I wanted, and left the salon with EXACTLY the style I have been wanting for a long, long time.
I found the place to be inviting and not off-putting at all; very un-salony in that regard, which I liked. Mason not only showed that he is a wiz with the siz (did I just say that?), but he is also a very friendly and interesting cat as well.
Magic indeed, and very recommended.
If you are thinking about getting extensions, look no further than Justine at Magic Salon. Although I hate to admit it I can be pretty picky when it comes to my hair- but I knew I could trust Justine to do a beautiful job with creating my longer locks after she did such a great job with my cuts and color on previous visits.
Justine is a true pro at doing extensions. The whole process was much quicker than I had expected, and she always makes sure I love my hair before I go. The salon is also very comfortable, relaxed and fun--just like the people who work there.
I have received many compliments on my new "do", and if you go see Justine I think you will too! ;)
I went back to Magic Salon, and was a bit disappointed. I guess I was only booked an hour and half, and my stylist was rushed to finish. My color didn't turn out as I wanted it, (I wanted platinum highlights, they are still more golden, not much of a difference) and the cut was extremely rushed, and she put WAY too many layers in it.
Not to mention, she didn't even have time to style my hair, which is the BEST part of the experience!! I don't think you should sacrifice one client for another, even if pressed for time. Not to mention the guy after me was a DUDE - his hair would take 20 minutes to complete, if that. I walked out sad, and went home to try to actually "style" my hair. It's not horrible, by any means, it doesn't look like Edward Scissorhands took a hack at me, but It's not what I wanted, and I didn't get the personalized experience I had the first time. I'm not sure if I'll be back. Or next time, make sure they book enough time for me.

I have one word for you: JUSTINE! She is simply amazing. I walked in, showed some pictures, told her… Read more »
After reading all of the amazing reviews for Mason, I was excited to make an appt. My appt isn't until December, but if the great customer service I received over the phone is any indication of the shop itself, I am really looking forward to a great experience!
So I had the wonderful Justine do my hair. I had extensions done. I was a little skeptical at first because I had never had extensions done this way. I had either had them sewn or glued in, but this time I got the fusion type extensions. I had a really good consultation with Justine and even got a free edgy bang trim. After that I felt really comfortable and excited about getting the extensions. They day I came in to get my extensions, I was sick with a cold. Justine made me some hot tea which was really nice of her. I felt like she really cared about her client. The hair was amazing quality and she gave me some soft layers to help the hair blend. I received so many compliments on my new hair via facebook and at school. If you're looking to get extensions done, Justine is your girl!
I tried Magic Salon based on the yelp reviews. I have curly hair so it can be difficult to find a someone that can do a good cut. Mason did a great job! The cut was age appropriate and cute. I love the way he styled it too. He also gave a wonderful scalp massage during the shampoo. I will be going back!
I normally LOVE Magic Salon, and Mason does great work with my hair! He even agreed to do some more experimental things with it that he normally doesn't do. Obviously, I was super excited to go in for this new look!
Unfortunately, someone dropped the ball in rescheduling my appointment from a Friday to a Monday and never actually changed it in their calendar. As bad luck would have it, the salon's harddrive crashed the day before my old appointment, so no one ever called to confirm. Concerned I didn't get a confirmation call on Sunday, the day before my appointment, I called to make sure everything was still okay, only to find out I had popped up as a "no show" for a Friday appointment I had rescheduled over a month ago.
I have a really tight schedule these days and purposefully made appointments around my Monday appointment because I was so excited to have this new look. I'm really sad that I had such a bad experience on the phone, mostly because I was made to feel as if I had done something terribly wrong, that it was my fault for not showing up, and that I was lying to try to get out of a "no show" tag on my appointment. I explicitly remember rescheduling my appointment because as soon as I got home (happy with my cut!) at the beginning of August, I looked at my calendar and realized I would not be able to make an appointment on this past Friday.
This experience combined with a friend's lackluster cut after lackluster cut (that has necessitated a return to fix) has made me question whether I can go back to Magic, which is a huge bummer because I normally love this place!
UPDATE: I just got off the phone with Magic, and she was very nice -- the treatment I was expecting the first time around. My appointment is rescheduled. Just as a note, I still think Mason is a great stylist, and this review was simply about my experience with an appointment mishap, which can be useful in evaluating the customer service of a place.

I've been looking for a salon that would meet my picky needs ever since I moved to Northern… Read more »
So after getting my haircut here, I didn't know how to feel...disliked it? it's ok? it's shorter than I hoped? why'd I do that? I had mixed feelings.
I'm really particular about my hair, since I think I look ridiculous with hair shorter than my shoulders, which was the mistake I made last August. So after months of growing it out, I was starting to dread the hairballs in the bathroom, the blow drying, the outgrown bangs, the dead ends....it's always a love-hate relationship with the hair. Since I have a wedding to attend and a Hawaii trip coming up at the end of May, I decided I really need a cut.
My sister is a regular here and sees Mason for her cut. I also did my research on Yelp. I originally wanted to come here for the recession Wednesday deal ($20), but really wanted to try Mason, who doesn't work on Wednesdays. I decided to pay the regular price and I'm glad I tried Mason. I showed him a few pictures, told him what I wanted, and he gave his opinion. I felt comfortable, as he understood what I was asking. I still wanted to keep the length, but he suggested a trim all around, and to lose some of the bulk.
After working his magic and seeing my hair on the ground, I was quite sad (every time I lose hair, I get a little sad just because my hair doesn't grow fast). Mason did a good job blowing my hair out and even styled it. He even gave tips on how I can style it at home.
Immediately after leaving, I wasn't blown away with the cut. But it's been a week now, and I do like it. I guess I found my own way of styling it. It definitely is easier to maintain since I lost bulk. It's not a dramatic cut, but it's also somewhat different.
I torn between putting a review up here for the sake of adding it to my Yelp list and to make sure that this place stays in business... and not putting one up so that you people don't make it any more difficult to get an appointment with Mason.
I can only write for experiences with Mason, which have been great. Twice I've gone to get my haircut, and each time I've had great results. The place looks really uh... un-salony?.... but it's not fuss, no frills, and good cuts and good prices. I'm never paying $70 at an expensive salon for a haircut again. Not worth it when my hair is thin and fine. Here I think the cuts are only $35 or something.
I don't know about getting anything else done here thought. I'm a fan of AVEDA colour, so I go get that done elsewhere. But for a cut, I always travel here.
So, I decided to try out Magic Salon after having a bad experience at another salon downtown. I actually got an email from Magic telling me about this new cool down-to-earth salon. I say hey, what the heck and I make an appointment with a stylist named Michelle. It was a little awkward at first sitting there and only three other people actually in the room.
When Michelle takes me back to her chair, she seems a little uncomfortable and clueless. I was hoping for some cutting ideas, but it wasn't coming. We decided to do an A-line type cut with layering in the back and red highlights. I guess they call it "stacking". So during the cut, my stylist is nervous and keeps dropping her scissors. She also hit me in the nose multiple times. I guess I wasn't really thinking when I asked for red highlights because she proceeded to place them directly OVER my old-regrowth. Even on top of my grays! I guess I just never realized I always did a base color before or something. So she cuts the stacking into the back, and I can tell she is having trouble with my difficult hair. She stacks it WAY too much and I end up with a shelf like thing on the back of my head. Not good.
I try to give it a few weeks to see what happens. The red highlights completely wash out and the cut looks even worse when it grows out a little bit. I call to make another appointment, and I express my dissatisfaction with the cut/color. There is really no response or an apology from either the receptionist or the stylist. Even when I tell my stylist that I am not happy with the highlights, she basically just shrugged her shoulders. So we go ahead and dye the whole thing red, and she ends up cutting the back even worse. At this point I know I will not be coming back. If I am going to blow $150 bucks on a hair cut with highlights, it needs to be done right!
I had to walk around with a Christmas Tree hairstyle for almost a year as it slowly grew out, it was awful.
Edited to add: The stylist's name was Michelle B which is NOT related to the Michelle currently employed there now. Just want to make that clear!
Update: I was contacted directly by the salon's owner within an hour aftr writing my review. She was very concerned about my perception of the salon. She explained the circumstances that had occured, and got me for a bang trim within a few hours - and didn't charge me as a show of good customer service. Further, when I went to book my haircut for a few weeks from now, she told me about a special they have - "Recession Wednesdays" where haircuts are $20 and hair color is 20% off. So I am very impressed that she addresses my concerns immediately. That is rare from businesses these days.
I hate to give a business 1 star before I have even GONE there. Here is the deal, I decided to try a new salon because I am just over Lush. I actually just moved to Curtis Park, so I am less than 5 minutes from Magic Salon, and saw all of the great reviews on here, and even referred my boss there from the reviews (she loves it). So now that I am all settled from my move and ready to focus on my hair, I gave them a call. Granted it was on a Saturday, and I know they are by appointment only, so I got the machine. I left a message. It is now Tuesday, I have not received a phone call back, and have tried calling twice, and received the answering machine both times (both calls were between the hours of 9am and 5pm). Do actual people work there?? Sucks because I really need at least my bangs trimmed before this weekend :(. I guess I have to suck it up and go deal with Lush.
I have been wanting to write this review for months but kept putting it off because I felt like I was the ONLY one that had a bad experience at Magic.
Magic and her husband are AMAZING and sweet, kind and loving and the atmosphere is so laid back, and I so loved that, yet I really needed a great cut and color. What I received instead was the most jacked up hair color/cut I have ever had!
When I came in, they didn't have me scheduled, and then gave me to the new girl, even though my appointment was with Mason. She FUCKED up my hair. I was there for FIVE hours and all I wanted was a little more blond and a a-line cut. When I was done my hair was orange and choppy. I had to leave, I mean five hours?
I called the second I was able to get to a phone and they were really nice about fixing the cut and color. I came in a couple of days later and the owner sort of fixed my hair, but made a comment about if I would have stayed longer she could have fixed it. WTF? five hours isn't long enough?
It took months to get over my scalp burn, screwed up orangish hair and totally uneven hair cut. I would never go back. I was really pissed off at the attitude that it was somehow my fault. They tried to correct my hair, but it still was horrible and they never offered to refund my money. It as a huge waste of time and expense, which I don't have much of.
I generally am not picky about my hair cuts; I would go to Master cuts or Regis and not really care because I'm too cheap to pay $40+ for a haircut every month. This place turned all of that around, not only did I get a reasonably priced hair cut, it was amazing. I walked in to this funky little place, the atmosphere was completely relaxed. I was offered coffee and some biscotti while I waited. Justine sat me down in her chair, took one look at me and said that she knew exactly what I needed to have done. She gave me one of the best hair cuts I've ever had, it's been over a month and I still don't feel shaggy.
My hair has just been so unmanageable lately that most of the time I put it up in a ponytail. I needed someone to work their magic and sure did. Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a hard customer to please- which is usually why I bounce around from stylist to stylist because I can't find one that works for me. I am proud to say that shall never happen again! The search is over and now I can sit back and enjoy my haircut
So okay, I have a problem. I am a cutter ...of my own hair. I use carpet razor blades to just kind of thin out the giant mass of hair that is frowing out of my head in a football helmet like fashion.
I had a great hair lady for years and years and now she is gone so the hunt has begun for a new one.
Well I believe I have found her at Magic Salon. Let me jsut say that the atmosphere is great. Not that uncomfortable silence or weirdness that can accompany some salons or hair styling facilities.
This place is cool and you feel kinda like you are in some hangout spot getting your hair done. Eclectic music spanning a large expanse of genres, perhaps not all your exact cup of joe but just wait, there is something new just moments away.
So I had resorted to managing the "do" on my own sometimes successfully and sometimes not so successfully. But here they simply repair the damages done and judge not.
THANK YOU Sonya!!! I will definitely be back.
This is my new favorite salon now, hands down!
I got my hair done last Wednesday by Justine (sp?) who did an amazing job. Not only did I get the exact cut I wanted, but I also appreciated the fact that she was friendly, attentive and fun. I loved how she did exactly what I wanted too (Most experiences I've had with other stylists ended up with them being too scared to cut more than an inch off, which bothered me because I really meant it when I told them I was sick of my long hair). She also makes great clip-ins with vibrant color and made out of real hair for just 8 bucks each.
The Salon in general was laid back, and just an all around nice atmosphere to be in. Not snoody or filled with super bitchy uptight kind of stylists you would normally find in a salon. (Which I have previously run into over the years, which was mainly the reason why I never ended up with 1 stylist until now.)
I came here after my sister discovered the place through a co-worker who told her about the awesome Recession Wednesday deal they do. My sister left looking fabulous, and as soon as I saw her hair I made my appointment right away.
I'm pretty sure it's safe to say this will be my one and only salon and stylist from now on.
Justine is absolutely brilliant. She just gave the best haircut I've ever had. Ever. I brought in a few pictures and she immediately understood what I wanted and made it happen - only better because she added her own twist. She definitely knows what she's doing. She made sure I was ok with everything and gave me great advice on how to use products without trying to sell me anything.
I highly recommend Justine especially if you want a short, edgy, textured cut.
omg!
They did such a good job on my hair..the lady who did my hair is named Ciara and I had black dye in my hair and wanted blond high lights and she got the black to lift out without killing my hair or turning it orange...and then she gave it a cute cut with layers and pretty bangs...ooo la la!
I am definitely going to be a regular :-D
I found Magic Salon on Yelp, when I was desperate for a haircut and needed a change from the stylist I'd been seeing for quite some time. I was eight months pregnant and HAD to have a change. Magic was able to get me on the schedule really quickly, and Mason gave me a haircut that I LOVE. It has been so easy to take care of -- and looked good through my last month of pregnancy, labor and birth! Now that I'm starting to get back to everyday life I will go back and see what Mason can do next for me. This haircut has made me feel sexy and pulled together despite all the post partum hormones!
The salon was hip and urban, tucked away in a little building off of Franklin Blvd. and Freeport/12th Avenue. There's a lot of original art and decor, and the funky, comfortable vibe was welcoming and relaxing. Not as relaxing as Mason's head massage, though! If I won the lottery, I'd book Mason to wash my hair every day.
Something I really like about the salon is that Magic and Mason are open on Sundays -- really rare for a salon of this quality.
In short, I'm a loyal Magic Salon client now, and can't wait to go back for my next cut.
What a great salon with a cool laid back vibe. Mason cut, colored and highlighted my hair and I love it. It is very hard to find someone who can cut curly hair and he did a great job. Don't feel intimidated if you think this salon is only for the young and the trendy. I'm a mom of a high-shooler and I felt comfortable and am very happy with my hair. I will definitely be a repeat customer.
I was tempted to hold back a review of Magic Salon for fear of having Mason innundated with customers, but I feel like for the good of the community I have to concur with every other 5 star rating. Mason is wonderful and he has given me newfound trust in stylists other than the one I had been going to for the past 10+ years.
The salon is much more hipster, punk-rock than you'd think. It's a little hard to find, but it's on the intersection of 12th and Franklin. While Mason owns the place, he rents space to all the other stylists - so don't assume that you can just pick any person to cut your hair. Hair color seems to be their forte here, but I loved my hair cut and it was super affordable.
Also, they have free espresso drinks - what more could you ask for?? Thank you Mason for an awesome haircut!!
Mason is the man. In five minutes, he took my suggestions, showed me a few pics in a magazine, and then presto - he was on his way to giving me a quality cut.
I'm not sure what exactly it was, but I was never as nervous as I usually am when I go to a brand new place to get a haircut. He is very chill and better yet, pretty damn talented. None of the chainsaw-massacre-like approaches with clippers here...instead, he worked like Edward Scissorhands for a solid twenty minutes to give me the cut I wanted. All in all, I ended up with a cut that looked better and better with each passing day and I never regretted going here.
It's just too bad that I can't talk myself into putting this much change into every cut, mainly b/c my hair grows faster than weeds and I need to get it cut literally every 2.5-3 weeks. That being said, if I win the lottery, or finish my training (whichever comes first), I'll be sure to dedicate my winnings to the Magic Salon, a very worthy cause indeed.
I am not a person you would consider extremely self-conscious about her looks, however, I have had some terrible haircuts. So I do my research.
I made an appointment with a specific stylist and drove the extra hour out of my way to get there, very excited with all of the good review I have heard about online. I checked in and they did a hairstylist switch on me. I made an appointment with a specific person and they gave me Ciara. I can't believe they switched my stylist on me. I noticed the stylist I wanted was busy.
Ciara was good. She was very nice and my hair looked great for about a month, but didn't grow out too well. The color was ok.
Wow. Being a recent transplant to Sac, I wasn't sure what to expect. I've been going to the same stylist in LA for about 10 years now and I absolutely loved her, until I came here and met Kaylie. Just unbelievable.
It was easy to book an apptmt, even on recession Wednesday. When I got there, the salon had a very lax, chill vibe. Not just young ppl, also middle agers there. Plenty of parking.
Kaylie was right on time, had a great vibe to her, was SUPER gentle (i felt like i was being lullabyed to sleep in the chair), and listened to everything I said about my hair. It was really a collaborative effort to make sure I left as happy as possible with my hair. She really listens and tries to make you happy. Free bang trims when needed... great haircut, she saved a botched "growing out phase" cut for me. I'm thrilled that I went to Kaylie, will be going back for certain, and will be recommending to all of my friends! I can't wait to have her try color and to let her go buck wild on my hair!!!
What a gem!
This is only an eyelash extension review! I'm sure all the reviewers have gotten fabulous haircuts and scalp massages, but the eyelash extensions are pretty bad.
I have been to several places for eyelash extensions, and I'm just not impressed at all with Magic Salon's. They look sparse and and seem to all be the same length (even thought your natural eyelashes would taper off nearer to the bridge of your nose. They are less expensive than a lot of the posh midtown places (which also don't do eyelashes particularly well) so if' you're choosing between fancy J Street places and Magic, it's not a bad way to go. But my recommendation is to venture further into South Sac, and find a Fancy Nails location - they do a great job for $60.
I love Magic Salon.
This place has the BEST logo. I mean it is sooo refined and elegant. A master craftsman must have toiled over this for days. Their excellence has really paid off. It is befitting of this wonderful establishment and its talented staff.
By the way...I designed their logo. With Mason's help, of course. It's nice to see their logo on the welcome page of this site every time I log in.
I should really get my hair cut there sometime soon.
The People here are SO nice and the cut and color were superb!!
The price was more than I expected. Worth the price, but I was still a little shocked.
I do HIGHLY recommend, but you might want to find out how much it's going to cost first.
I just returned from Magic and I love it. My hair looks awesome and (I'm so going to butcher my loverly stylists name..and I asked her twice. Sorry) Sierna was FAN-FRIEEKN-TASTIC!! I have finally found a place that will give my head the attention it deserves!
I love you so magic salon!
Nice salonmosphere. Decorative for the holiday and pretty people working it. Hair cuts are at a moderate price-- $35. Their products are standard.
I had an okay experience, nothing extraordinary.
I went to Mason after reading the reviews on him. I was looking for someone who could cut guys hair and he was great. It was a little pricy for someone who usually cuts my own hair, but worth it since I had a very important interview that week.
He was very helpful and understood what i wanted and did not mind at all when I was very picky and made him do three other things to make it just the way i wanted.
I highly recomdend Mason to anyone who know exactly what hair cut they want. He did a great job and I will be going back when i have another important interview.
Michelle is amazing with curly hair. I have never had my hair cut by somebody who really knows how to work with wild waves. She gave my hair great body without the triangle effect and I really love the gloss she gave me too!
I'll definitely be going back!
Just as described... The people were awesome, (I would totally hang out with them!) the place was friendly and inviting (Full of laughter and fun!) and the cut was perfect for me. I will be back! (Oh, and Magic's iced coffee was the bomb!)
Thanks to Mel D for the yelp recommendation.
I wasn't nervous a bit!
Everyone should be so happy with their stylist!
Edward P. wrote "Their website is a myspace page...nuff said."
No, it's not enough.
You knock down someone's rating, someone who has worked his ass off to learn his trade and start his own business, over something so arbitrary? Ridiculous!
I've had Mason cut my hair for years now. He's cut my hair in his basement, at a salon in Oak Park, at Alley Cuts and now at Magic Salon. Mason can do any style. He worked hard to learn how to cut EVERY type of hair. He can give great advice and help you figure out what you want to do with your hair. And he'll cut it how you want it, even if you go in and ask for a foo-foo haircut on your head, as I've done many times. This guy is the real deal. Service, style, artistry and he is a great guy as well.
The salon is the coolest. Hang out with Magic, have an espresso, read MAD magazine and you'll end up wanting to hang out even after the cuttin' is done.
Maybe they'll build a proper website soon. I could really care less.
When I needed to get my roots touched up I compared this place to DEEDA salon. This place won purely because the pricing was better (both salons had really good revews).
I scheduled an appointment with Ciara, and she was very nice about everything. While she was doing my hair she made conversation with me, and she offered me a glass of water while we were waiting for the color to set in my hair.
What really impresses me about this place is that when I came back two days later (because the color Ciara used for my roots were still darker than the rest of my hair), they were very apologetic for the earlier coloring. Ciara happily redid my roots, and while we waited she played some MGMT (I'd give them five stars on ambiance, they play fabulous music). After she made sure the roots and the rest of my hair matched in color, she told me that it was free because it was her mistake.
This place is definitely a my favorite salon, and what's nice is that you get a discount when you schedule your next appointment with them!
I've been wanting to stop by this place for quite some time, but hadn't decided on a cut yet. I finally got the chance to go in yesterday and was so pleased with the service and cut that I had to review it right away. The receptionist made an appointment for me with Ciara and I'm so glad she did! Ciara was really cool and easy to talk to. She understood what I wanted and even gave me some tips on how to style my new short hair. I'll definitely make another appointment with her the next time I go in.
I don't like admitting this, but here goes. Last year, I received the opportunity of a lifetime--a trip to Paris (as in France). And what did I decide to do a week before I left? An at-home dye job with products I had never used before. So, needless to say, the job turned out horribly, and when my sister recommended I call Mason, I figured I had nothing to lose. The night before I boarded the plane, Mason stayed open late to correct my color and also gave me a cute cut that worked with my extremely thick, curly hair. I walked out of there feeling super relieved and really impressed, not to mention extremely thankful. Really friendly place with totally reasonable prices and cool people.
FINALLY. thnkmfg. I know have a brilliant hair cut that I am extremely happy with! AND- I can go back for free bang trimmings in between cuts. Kaylie cut my hair and she did an amazing job! She involved me so much in the decision process. Instead of just hacking my hair the way she wanted or how she's used to, she really consulted me before and throughout the cut to make sure I was getting what I wanted. I believe Kaylie generally cares about how her clients want their hair to make them feel and look. I'm so glad I went here, and now I'm a customer for life.
My mom went here on May 6th, during the Rescission Wednesdays, and her hair was done by Sonya. She got hair cut and highlights... She took her time, but it looks amazing. Even massaged her head when she washed it. My mom wasn't sure what she wanted done with her hair, so told Sonya to do what she thought would look good, my mom is very pleased with it and will be back again! Thank you Sonya, you made my mom a very happy woman... which isn't easy to do.... just sayin... :)
Oh my GOD!! Where do I start? I needed my hair done: roots touched up and a trim post haste. I called them, very last minute and I am so glad I did. Justine is awesome. It was her day off and she was only in to do her friend's hair and stayed late to do mine. I explained what color I wanted and she gave me what I wanted, only better. Mason and Magic were lovely too. Magic gave me a lovely sample of their patented pumpkin mask and wrote out directions and everything. I live in Emeryville and will definitely be coming back when I come to visit my family.
