going into cripple creek for the night, we didn't realize we we're entering into a coal mining mini vegas. that said, you make the best of what you've got. we stayed across the street at the imperial and after taking one peek at their overpriced and limited menu, we dashed out to see if we could find something with a little more variety and a lower price tag. we stumbled into maggies.

the interior was nice, especially considering it's in the basement of some old timey casino. it had clearly been remodeled some time ago, but seemed well kept. our host brought our drink orders and our server was over shortly after. i decided to go with the reuben and onion rings (usually a safe bet) and my mans decided on the cheese tortellini.

i'm not sure why he was expecting anything other than frozen, but i think he was slightly disappointed. in his defense, the sauce was rather bland (a butter base with parmasean). my reuben was satisfactory, but lacking in the hefty serving of kraut that i've come to expect. the onion rings were pretty damn good though.

the price was right, the service was spot on and i'm sure it was a hell of a lot better than what we'd have gotten across the street.

So, my boyfriend and I visited Maggie's on a Friday night. I had read some reviews on other websites that touted this place as being one of the better in the area and someone mentioned that it was one of the few restaurants in Cripple Creek that wasn't actually in a casino. WRONG. The decor was nice, but this place was really quiet and probably for good reason. The prices are pretty high, which you sort of expect in a mountain town but for the quality of the meal they should have been significantly lower. The food was okay... our service was pretty bad. Our waiter seemed to be avoiding our table for most of our dinner and actually didn't even write down my boyfriends order. So my food came out and we had to wait another 20 minutes before he got his. I would have been willing to overlook the high prices had the service been decent, but given there were very few patrons in the place and it still took forever to get our food I cannot. Our waiter did offer to make up for the not putting my boyfriend's food order in with a free dessert but at that point we had already wasted an HOUR and a HALF waiting for what little we had asked for and decided against it since we did actually want to try to see a little bit of Cripple Creek before midnight. I think that just about the only thing this place has going for it is menu variety. I would not go back.
