Oh my gawd, vegan sundaes, for reals? While I had heard of Maggie Mudd's before and had tried some of their ice cream at Herbivore, I had no clue about what Bernal Heights was like, so when i got an invitation from a CouchSurfer visiting from Australia to get some vegan ice cream, it was an adventure. It turned out Bernal Heights was extremely charming, has a great view, and a few blocks down from Maggie Mudd's is a vegan bakery (which has always been closed the few times i trekked up there so the jury is still out on that one.)
The Messy Marcie is either the best thing on earth or the death of me or both. Amazing death by sugar. They have vegan versions of everything, including fudge and marshmallows and whipped cream, which is hard to come by. I was really excited when one of those coupon daily dealies had a huge discount, so i could share this with my friends.
It does smell sickeningly sweet in there though. -

As a surprise at my birthday dinner, a few of my great friends planned to have a cake delivered from MaggieMudd. They chose the Banana Split cake (description below) and it was DELICIOUS! The bits of waffle cone inside were particularly great! The cake was cute too but not a work of art and my name was mis-spelled on it which I would guess is a MaggieMudd issue and not my friends' spelling... I'd definitely recommend their ice cream cakes though!
From their website- "Waffle Banana Split: The Grandaddy of them all! Vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate ice cream stuffed with fresh banana slices, cherries, fudge and caramel swirls, and waffle bowl pieces on white cake." -
Review from Ravena F.
Green tea ice cream was a hit at the work pot-luck, so I appreciate Maggie's help in making me not feel badly about not actually making something. To my taste, the texture was gorgeously creamy, but lacking the strong green tea flavor that you can sometimes find (usually at good Japanese restaurants).
And also, I could only have one teeny-tiny bite. This is because all of their ice creams (including vegan options) contain corn syrup. Since I've learned that all corn products cause me migraines, I could not partake the way I gluttonously normally would.
So.
One star for the creamy texture
One star for the super friendly and helpful afternoon employee (who double-checked the ingredients for me)
One star for offering vegan options
Minus a star for a sticky, dirty sort of ambiance
Minus a star for no corn syrup-free options
Altogether 3 stars for a solid ice cream option, though I won't be back unless I develop some sort of twisted fetish for some serious migraine action. (Something tells me that's not a big one in the sex-club world . . . yet.) -
Review from Ken G.
I was at Maggie Mudd twice last month and while my first visit was pretty good, my last visit was very disappointing.
After a nice hearty meal of Filipino comfort food, I thought I'd top my day off with a milkshake from Maggie Mudd, since it was on the way back to the city. I got the Tarmac - a milkshake mix of chocolate ice cream, peanut butter and Oreo cookies. It was a rich and tasty treat - sweetness from Oreo cookies, with some nice bitterness from the cocoa and a slight hint of salty from the peanut butter.
Last weekend I was there and wanted another milkshake - by the way, if you've never been to Maggie Mudd, milkshakes consist of basically half of their menu offerings. Their blender was broken (weird!!!!) so no milkshakes; instead I went for a sundae. Unfortunately they had no chocolate ice cream, no brownies and no chocolate chips...really strange...what does that leave you with??? I mean it's a Sunday afternoon, really cold outside and the place was not busy. I settled for a random sundae that was sloppily put together and honestly didn't taste all that great...it was okay.
While I still enjoyed an ice cream cake I got there last year and really enjoyed my milkshake a few weeks ago, all-in-all the ice cream isn't all that great. With Mitchell's, Bi-Rite, Swensen's and Mr. & Mrs. Miscellaneous, there really isn't a need to go here. If you're vegan or prefer dairy-free ice cream, then this is definitely a place to visit since they have a ton of options...if you like good, old-fashioned ice cream, you can get better quality elsewhere.
Also, this place is dingy and messy and not really a "fun" ice cream parlor, so be prepared.Listed in: Best Ice Cream/Gelato/Frozen…

I really needed and ice cream cake for my husbands birthday. Time was getting close and I couldn't find anywhere else in the city that could do it.
What was perfect is that they could personalize it with my own photo.
That's where they get the one star.
I did everything on line which I loved but was a little hesitant because of some of the bad reviews on YELP. I added my email address in on their website to get deals emailed but have NEVER received any. I chose a chocolate cake with choc peanut butter ice cream and cookies and cream. I should of had it delivered because I was prepared for what I saw when i got there and I wish I hadn't seen it.
It was dark and dingy and very unlike any ice cream place Ive ever been to. No signage and no ice cream for you to look at oh and really dirty.
I stood there for a while and watched the girl wash dishes with her back to me. Messy soapy water with stainless steel ice cream containers up to her elbows. After a while she realized I was standing there an apologized. Fair enough......
Then she asked me to hold on one sec while she grabbed a waffle that was cooking with her wet hands and tried to roll it. whats worse was she was rolling it on top of a really dirty surface and I thought to myself hope that's a practice or for her and not some poor customer!!
I told her that I was here to pick up a cake...She grabbed my details out of a binder and went to grab the cake...lucky the cake was already in a box because if it wasn't I may of asked her to wash her hands properly! The cake was tiny for what they claimed fed 6-8 people and the photo that I sent in wasn't even covering the entire cake. The side of it was sticking up.....But I wasn't going to make a big deal of it I just wanted to leave.
As I was leaving the girl asked me if I wanted the info sheet that they had for the order. I said sure.
I was shocked to see that all my personal details with my name billing address, phone numbers, email address and COMPLETE credit card information WITH security pin was on here for all to see. I thought it was illegal for business to have information like this out for anyone to get? I wont be returning.
Its too bad . I really wanted to support a local company. Looks like Ill have to start hunting for a new cake place :(
As for the taste? Meh, wasn't anything special :( -

I passed by MaggieMudd a few times and was always intrigued by the huge ice cream cone sculpture they have in the front window. The five foot tall ice cream cone makes the place look inviting from the outside. It made me think the place would be a fun and clean ice cream shop, but to my surprise I was wrong.
A few months ago I finally made it to Maggiemudd, and boy is that place a dump. The shop is small and dank, and my immediate impression was the place looked like a public bathroom with a hot dog cart as a counter. They do not keep their ice cream in a display case, the lighting is poor and when I asked for my ice cream in a cup, I received it in a small paper tray similar to the ones In-n-out uses for their fries (but only smaller and flimsier). Now in this hipster/yuppie day and age I notice businesses trying to be creative to give themselves an upper hand... But three scoops of hard frozen ice cream in a small paper container?!?! Come on, lets be practical. The spumoni ice cream itself was OK... but when I spend money I like to receive value in return and I honestly feel MuggieMudd is not worth the value.Listed in: Bernal Heights

Ummm...Serious?
The look of this small place DOES match the taste of their products.
.....Pretty muddy indeed! Actually, messy is more like it.
One star goes to their vegan-friendly menu. Sadly their menu was very very limited.
Their Soy-based green tea lacked the green tea flavor.
Peach was too tart for me.
The Tar Mack was a peanut butter mess!
I expected their shakes to be a little more thick.
Monkey Jitters....with vanilla ice cream, bananas, and a double shot of expresso....sounds better than how it tasted.
When we got there after lunch, they were running out of ice cream. Selection was minimal across the board. Thanks to a friend, we used groupons. Now I wish we didn't even use them.
Humphry, here I come! -

I've never been to the actual storefront, but my sister got a Townhog deal worth $50 for an ice cream cake that was expiring at the end of January so she gave it to me to use for my birthday cake. First of all, it is super duper easy to order a cake online. There are so many options though. What size? What design? What flavor? Yikes!
I finally decided on a Princess Aurora 6" hand stuffed cake. I believe we went with the Goodie Noogie which had vanilla ice cream, chocolate-hazelnut swirls, chocolate chips, and almonds on chocolate cake. I asked for the cake to be delivered between 9:00am - 9:30am on the day of my birthday. My mom and I were anxiously awaiting and were super excited when the doorbell rang at 9:31am. Yes, a minute late!!! But well worth the wait.
When we brought the cake out after dinner, it was a huge hit! Of course, our big problem was how to cut the cake. Seriously, big dilemma. But the cake was delicious. I'd order the Goodie Noogie again. -

Finally a worthy ice cream shoppe in my neck of the woods. I mean techically Mitchell's is a couple of neighborhoods away, but Maggie Mudd is a short hop over the freeway.
The line wasn't deep, maybe 6 people ahead of us but the fact that there was only one person there caused us to wait about 20 minutes to get our ice cream fix - a wait well worth it.
I got the Brooklynne's Twisted Mind - a shake made of Vanilla Ice Cream, a dollop of peanut butter (not the cheapy stuff but JIF), marshmallow creme, chocolate syrup, and a freshly made waffle that the nice lady crushed with her bare hands then put into the blender which made the greatest milkshake i've ever tasted. EVER TASTED!
David got the cookie bowl which was enough for 3, Hailey got the rainbow sherbert, and Maxey boy got the vanilla which all devoured in less than 5 minutes.
I just wish they had more people working, but hey, i'm only a customer. Anyway, I love you Maggie Mudd! Keep on Truckin'! -

I've dreamed about visiting their store for a few months.
I've salivated about eating one of their shakes again for a few years.
I first tried a shake back in 2006. A co-worker who was vegan introduced me to some chocolate explosion concoction she was eating and I fell in love. Alas, it was a small sampling and I've finally found the same bliss again on my own.
Today, I had the vegan Chocolate Peanut Butter shake and it was thick and delicious. Choosing between the several options was fun in a way, because I figured I'd return several times in the future to try each of them. Several can be made vegan.
While, I'm on the subject of wonferful things, I was equally pleased with Cortland Ave., and Bernal Heights in general.
Having moved to the City back in 1999, this was my first official visit to the Heights. Does anyone call it that? Great neighborhood and great store front offerings. I can't believe I've never visited prior to today but I'm so glad I now live close by.
The service at Maggie Mudd was friendly and she seemed to know the customers. I think Bernal has a small town feel and I look forward to going back.
God, I love this City!!! -

Discovered MaggieMudd through groupon, a $40 8' inch cake for $20. The deal was such a steal that I had to buy it, despite never having heard of MaggieMudd before. I love icecream, and I especially love icecream cake, so what the hell. If you're getting a cake, they expect you to use the website, which is extremely convenient and user-friendly. I even uploaded a picture onto the website and make personal touches easily. They email you with confirmations and to tell you that your order has been "locked in", which basically means you can't make anymore changes. You also have to choose what time you want to pick up the cake. I found that the most annoying because I really didn't want to schedule my day around what time I want to pick up a cake. I went during the time I said I would but I don't imagine you'd lose your pre-ordered cake if you go after the time you signed up for.
So, excitedly, I trekked to Bernal Heights. When I got to the store, i was extremely disappointed. The yelpers were right, the store looks small and messy. You definitely don't feel like a happy child walking into an icecream shop at MagMudd. It definitely sucked the happiness out of my endorphin flowing veins. But the waitress wasn't too bad. She was somewhat disorganized and could not find my order but she wasn't rude. She went to the back, the dark abyss, to fetch my cake. As I was waiting, I noticed how few flavors they have available to customers who want to buy a scoop. And, you can't tip toe at the counter to look at the various sweet, icy goodness. The icecream is kept somewhere in the back, far from the public eye. That's definitely a minus, minus. Icecream shops, by definition, should have large, glass counters so that adult children like me can stare, wide-eyed and innocently.
So on to the cake, I wasn't disappointed by how it looked. The picture came out perfectly, which was the highlight of the cake. Everyone was so amazed (yes, our first photo-cake [we are noobs]) by the picture. Unfortunately, the cake itself didn't measure up...especially since we had all had a Bi-Rite icecream cake just three weeks before. The cake was soft, even right out the freezer. And the oreo crust tasted sandy, nothing like a cookie pie crust: dense and delicious. The icecream didn't taste spectacular either. We got cookie and choc. chip cookie dough. I couldn't really taste either flavors, both resembling like vanilla.
So, we were disappointed. Props and kudos to easy to use website and great groupon deal, but boo to lackluster icecream and disappointing shop. -

Got a groupon for an ice cream cake at Maggie Mudd that I thought would be perfect for my girlfriends birthday. Ordered the 8" ice cream cake online and went to pick it up....
Customer service was horribly slow....when I got to Maggie Mudd there was only 1 other customer in front of me it took us over 15 minutes to just get a cake PICKED UP and they had no idea how to process my groupon and finally ended up telling us that we couldn't use the groupon for that purchase.
The ice cream cake itself was below average for $40 price. The frosting was disgusting. That's when I thought I would never try this place again. Very disappointing for a "good time" business. -

I ordered a cake with a 50% off coupon. For $25 I got a $50 cake! It was quite good, except on the order form under special instructions, I wrote to have the white cake replaced with a graham cracker crust (which is also an option) but they must have not noticed.
I like that you are able to upload a picture and they'll print it on the cake...
Overall, I'm happy with my order and with the cake. I will probably come back and buy ice cream, but probably not a $50 cake - unless, of course, it's 50% off. -

It was my nephews birthday and he's in love with thomas the train. Problem is..he's not a big fan of cakes. Question was..where am I going to find a thomas the train ice cream cake. I prayed wouldn't have to make one myself. I saw on groupon a coupon for MaggieMudd for $20! SCOREEEEEE!!!
The thomas train cakes was a hit. He absolutely loved it! The cake has toy thoms the train on the cake. We requested the cake to be stuffed with strawberry ice cream, and the second layer with mango ice cream! It was great!
Note: Special requested ice cream cakes, some require notice in advance. I would call or look on their website! -

I really hate to complain, but here's what happened on my first (and quite possibly my last) visit to Maggie Mudd.
I was super excited because I had been wanting to try Maggie Mudd's for some time now. It was a beautiful indian summer evening in San Francisco. There was a wait of about half an hour (no big...).
We decided to order a waffle bowl but the kid behind the counter said that he was closing in about 10 minutes and it would take to long to make a waffle bowl. Boo. (Still, no big...)
So we opted for a scoop of Caramel Praline (I believe that's what it was...). So we got our scoop and looked at it. It was as if it came from the melted bottom of the ice cream barrel, that was sitting under the sun for 15 minutes. I walked out, looked at it and decided this was unacceptable. So I brought it back to the kid and asked for my money back (nicely...).
I really want to like you, Maggie Mudd...but alas, I'll stick with the likes Bi-Rite, Humphrey's, Mitchell's and Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous. -

Groupon reminded me that I hadn't been to Maggie Mudd's in a while. I forgot how much I liked them!
I intended on getting just ONE scoop, but their sundae menu sparked my interest. I like that their sundaes are not massive or overdone with toppings, so you can actually enjoy each ingredient. I had the Banana Mambo - banana nut ice cream (two scoops), in an eco-friendly reusable flower shaped cup, crowned with banana slices, topped with whipped cream, caramel, walnuts and a cherry. You actually get to choose your own ice cream and sauce but I love the banana and caramel mix. The banana nut ice crea was soy-based but you'd never know the difference :)
My husband had the Isha's sundae: cookies and cream ice cream, topped with two oreo cookies, chocolate sauce, whipped cream and a cherry...served in a chocolate-lined waffle bowl. I tried a bit of his and the chocolate was a bit too overwhelming - I would have probably swapped the cookies and cream ice cream for vanilla since it's already topped with two oreos. But then again, I don't go ga-ga over chocolate, either. But since you get to choose your own ice cream and sauce, you get to tone up or tone down the flavors in the sundaes so that you can personalize it the way you like.
Maggie Mudd's is able to give you this personalized service because they're not overcrowded. In fact, wen we arrived, a small group was leaving and we were in the only ones in the shop for a while. So we had the luxury of muddling over our choices while they patiently waited.
Other things to note:
They have a bathroom and it's clean.
Parking is tough on weekends, but on weekdays it's fairly easy.
They sell ice cream cakes.
They have a large selection of lactose free ice creams
Maggie's definitely has a personality all it's own - bright, fun, unique. It's definitely worth a try. It's a refreshing departure from the crowded ice cream shops we're probably all used to.Listed in: Creamy Crack!

These guys know how to do ice cream.
I got a deal on one of their photo ice cream cakes, and they went above and beyond.
I ordered the birthday cake online a week or so in advance, sending in a picture featuring my boyfriend in his Satan halloween costume on Muni with beer can in hand. An epic photo deserves to be on an epic cake, with the caption: Hail Satan!
And Maggie Mudd Delivered. Quite literally, and figuratively. The cake was brought to my house right on time and the cake itself was a huge hit among everyone at the surprise birthday party. It was deliciously coffee-flavored and couldn't have looked any better. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to go the extra mile for somebody's birthday. -

I love sweets. I love ice cream. I love MaggieMudd.
Seriously, MaggieMudd's vegan ice cream is awesome. I'll buy it at Rainbow when I see either Tarmak or Memphis Mudslide in stock. Whenever I go in to the store on Cortland I feel like a kid in a candy store... or ice cream shop. They always have at least 5 vegan flavors written up on the wall, since they do run out sometimes...
One star off for not having at least an organic flavor sometimes... I guess I shouldn't rag on them too much for that, but seriously. I'm a vegan who likes organics -- and I'm sure as hell not the only one out there. -
Review from Carol L.
Really thick creamy ice cream here. I'm a little unimpressed by the actual store, and also the variety of flavors. Its your typical cookies & cream, mint chocolate chip, strawberry, etc flavors. BUT, the quality of these normal flavors is really good.
I had the cookies & cream and mint chocolate chip. Huge chunks of cookies and choc chip in 'em. -
Review from Eric A.
This place is cute and nicely located off Cortland.
I don't know if I can say it's better than BiRite or Mitchell's, because their menu items were original.
I would recommend this place if you're looking for normal items, if you want something more creative, walk down the street and try Mitchell's -

-1 star for stale cone -0.5 star for limited soy flavors = 3.5 stars for my most recent experience
I've been craving Maggie Mudds and was so excited to visit them again. However, I was pretty disappointed in my most recent visit. They only had 3 soy flavors that night: bubble gum (gross!), chocolate, and mexican chocolate. I tried the mexican chocolate and it wasn't great so by default, I picked the chocolate which was good.
I raved about the waffle cone during my first visit but was thoroughly disappointed that the waffle cone was super stale this time. I even gave it another chance and bought a second cone, requesting for a "fresh" one. I ended up with another stale cone...which ruined my ice cream experience. However, the taste of the soy waffle cone was still delicious and I still give them props for making a non-dairy waffle cone!
Even though my last experience wasn't great, I'll probably still come back. Hopefully, they'll have more soy flavors next time and they'll actually make the waffle cone fresh!1 Previous Review: Show all »

South San Francisco, CA
Why does this place have so many good ratings? There is nothing about this place that stands out to me. This place was small and looked messy. The service was horrible. The employees knew nothing about their own product. I asked questions about certain flavors and all three of them seemed unsure. I also asked, " What kind of nuts do you guys use in the banana nut ice cream, walnuts?" The employees didn't know. The asian kid goes, "It's probably pecans." Scoops a little spoon of ice cream and hands it to me. He says, "Actually, it's almonds." I taste the ice cream, and it's walnuts!
The manager/owner, I don't know who he was but looked important, never acknowledged the customers, nor payed attention to how his employees were handling things. It was really unprofessional. They were talking about their personal lives and acting as if it was their little hang out spot.
The ice cream = Meh! 2 stars for this place. -

The ice cream is pretty good.
I like the cotton candy and bubble gum flavors. I usually get a sundae so I get to pick whatever 2-3 flavors they have for the day with whatever toppings. Decently priced and open til 10. I usually stop by whenever I am at my boyfriends house craving ice cream and don't want to wait in line. -

The place is small & if you come here on Wednesdays for $1 kids scoop you may be waiting in line for a while since there's usually 1 person working the counter/scooper.
The flavors are impressive although I'm expecting more organic and/or natural ingredients from them since they do carry vegan & lactose-free ice cream, but I've seen buckets of Peter Pan peanut butter by the machines. hmmm. -

I have got to say that this is the best "ice cream cake" I have ever had (but I have to be honest this is the only one I have ever had). I say "ice cream" because I am not sure you can classify dairy free ice cream as real ice cream.
However, we did get two cakes from Maggie Mud and my family tried the dairy free cake (stuffed with heath bar *not dairy free and they let you know*, marshmallow cream, Graham cracker, and Mississippi Mudd dairy free ice Cream) and they said mine was better then there real ice cream cake. I am a little biased as I can only say mine was BOMB!! the "ice cream" consistency was the best that I have had and there was no after taste as most dairy free ice creams have (believe me I have tried most).
We ordered the cakes on Monday for a birthday and originally were going to have them delivered, but we changed our minds and picked them up. The store was completely cool and refunded us the delivery fee. Although the order form online gave specific times to pick up the cakes, the store worked with us so that we could pick them up at a more convenient time. Overall very yummy and can't wait to try more dairy free cakes from them!! -

It's painted piss yellow and is about the size of my walk-in closet; but as it turns out, Maggie Mudd has some of the best ice cream--and definitely the best vegan ice cream--I've ever eaten.
The non-dairy ice creams are creamy and refreshing with a very smooth texture. They're soy milk, coconut milk, almond milk, or hazelnut milk based, and freshly made in the store. They come in lots of unique flavors like Black Tea, Coconut Lychee, and Black Sesame... and they're all fucking great.
The service is also outstanding. The girl was really nice and helpful, and she let me buy one of the prepackaged pints intended for retailers. She also told me that she liked my nail polish, which, of course, earns her ten stars, irrespective of the ice cream. -

If you are too closed minded to appreciate ice cream made without 10,000 pounds of cream, perhaps you should move somewhere more your speed, like say, Des Moines (I joke! I love the Midwest! But it is a totally different beast out there and not acknowledging that is just silly.)
On the non bitchy tip, Maggie Mudd has become the only ice cream I ever look forward to actually eating. Something to be said for not feeling like you have to throw up after consuming a tasty dessert. I recently found heaven on earth in the form of peanut butter & jelly ice cream with oreo (actually vegan friendly oreo cookie knock-offs hydrox) cookie shavings in a waffle cone. Their sundaes are also an awesome dinner replacement. Cookie base is the way to go, my friend. -

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream....or at least some variation of it, since this is a socially conscious town and lots of people are actually screaming for animal rights instead of dairy and can't eat ice cream as a result. This place screams right back at you "No animals have been harmed in the making of the right side of our menu board".
There are lots ice cream flavors here, half of them are vegan for you lactose intolerant or slaughterhouse intolerant individuals out there. The vegan ice cream doesn't have that stale ass taste some vegan ice creams have. Still, I ordered the real dairy variety last time, because, though I respect everyones right to choose, I sometimes choose cow. Either way you get something tasty.
Unfortunately, and minus one star for this, you may not get what is on the board. The gal behind the counter may tell you they are out of cotton candy ice cream, even though, clear as day, the little magnet on the board says cotton candy ice cream. You will think to yourself that cotton candy is not a very grown up flavor and only a kid would want it anyhow, as you order the very grown up coffee flavor. The entire time you are there she will not take the magnet down, thus disappointing at least two more customers. You will get over it, as you sit enjoying your coffee ice cream, but in the back of your mind you will be thinking cotton candy is a kids flavor and a kid might be very upset when they get their heart set on it and thier dreams are crushed.
MaggieMudd, please update your flavor board when you sell out so that my dreams, um, errr, I mean some kids dreams, are not crushed. -

After passing by MaggieMudd's for years (really, years) without having ever tried it, I finally decided it was TIME. Down Cortland I go with a friend by my side and I strut on into MM's (it's messier than a Jamba Juice during a summer slam). I got the the mint cookie chocolate vegan whatever it's called ice cream and my friend got the vanilla (what a Plain Jane).
My scoop did not disappoint, however, I would advise you not to wear white.... vegan ice cream melts really fast... :*( ***

After our dinner and with the nice sunny weather still hanging around, we took a drive to the quiet Bernal Heights area and check another one of my targeted businesses. I also like to say the name with the deep southern accent:
"MAGGIE MUDD!"
This small ice cream place makes their own blend of ice cream with the freshest organic ingredients of soy and lacto-vegetarian. A very unique ice cream place like this one can fool any diehard ice cream-lovers. This vegan-delight parlor also services many of the popular vegetarian restaurants and businesses throughout the Bay Area.
With us being the only one there, we sampled a couple of the available flavors. I had a spoon sample of the Butter Pecan and the Bear Claw ice cream. Bear Claw is a chocolate ice cream with bits of vegan brownies and caramel sauce. Wife had the Rocky Road and the tropical Coconut Pineapple. All these samples are really good as well as tasty and might be our proposed and likely choice on our next visit.
Since our sweet taste-buds are now awake, I had a scoop of the Caramel Apple and she had the Lemon-Meringue Pie. For $3.60, the adult-size scoop is a pretty good-size scoop in a colorful small 5oz bowl. The Caramel Apple is a green colored ice cream with the taste and chunks of the apple and the swirl of the caramel sauce. Her Lemon-Meringue ice cream tasted like slice of Lemon Meringue pie from a bakery with the citrus taste of the lemon ice cream. Our treats were so good, man, "who are they trying to fool?" This frozen delight does not taste anything like vegan.
I used my Visa for this sweet purchase.
Every Wednesdays, kids get a scoop for $1.00. I'll definitely bring my ice cream-cadets on Wednesday and fetch some of those ice creams and hopefully give them some money to get their parents some of the tasty vegan ice cream. I'm not a kid no more, but I feel like one.Listed in: Matt's Summertime Frozen…, Reviews from 800-900

MaggieMudd sounds like a bespectacled, bottom-heavy debutante with shellfish allergies...but no, it's an orange-hued, SoCal-looking ice cream parlor in Bernal Heights. When we entered, things didn't seem promising with urban rap blaring from somebody's radio in the back where a gaggle of low-trousered teens were saying bon mots like "WHASSUP?" and my favorite, "Fo'shizzle".
There were quite a few selections on the overhead menu, and I didn't realize until later that they specialized in non-dairy vegan options. OK, that's interesting...NOT. As the rare Asian who has no residual effect from downing a quart of milk, I went for the full-throttle ice cream. The root beer float flavor caught my eye probably because I noticed Safeway hasn't been carrying the cartons of the Breyer's A&W Root Beer Float ice cream I crave.
I got a small serving for $2.50, and it came in the same plasticine blossom cups that Gelateria Naia uses ...so of course, I wiped it down to add to my useless collection at home. Regardless, the ice cream itself was good, creamy though a bit too frozen to fully enjoy. But I liked it...and I wouldn't kick Maggie out of bed if she was lying like a corpse after faking...oh never mind.
ICE CREAM - 4 stars...not nearly Bi-Rite level but it'll do in a pinch
AMBIANCE - 3 stars...like you were on Venice Beach during an arctic cold spell...except for the urban ghetto sounds...and that big, standalone ice cream cone display looks awfully real
SERVICE - 3.5 stars...OK, nothing special
TOTAL - 4 stars...rounding up because it's a long climb down that hill to go to Mitchell's -

My husband surprised me with a DELIVERED ice cream cake for my birthday!
It was delicious. He said the process and ease of ordering were simple and smooth. -

Hi, my name is Bucky, and I am an addict. It has been 4 days since my last shake. This is how it played out-
Bucky: Yo yo shorty. I needs to get a shake.
Girl behind the counter: What kind?
B(itching and twitchy)-Ch,ch,cherried away.
GBTC- Vanilla or Chocolate?
B- Damn, vanil, no choc, no, uh, no, uh, hit me wit chocolate.
As I watch the blender, I feel myself getting more antsy. Finally she turns, shake in hand, I snatch it and throw my money onto the counter. I head out the door for my fix, which brought me to my earlier confession....
Good shakes, good sundaes, even soy based ice cream for the lactose intolerant and communist crowds.Listed in: The Heights of Bernal...., Ice Cream Addict!!!!

I was (perhaps fairly) labeled a fatty during our visit to Maggie Mudd this weekend.
In my defense, I was on vacation, and there was lots of really amazing-looking non-dairy ice cream, and I am a skinny vegan, so I thought taking "one of everything" would be totally acceptable.
(...I did not really take one of everything.)
Just six gargantuan scoops. Three of them in a "Tarmack Sundae," ("Chocolate and peanut butter flavor with chocolate cookies and peanut butter swirls") with whipped (faux-)cream and nuts and chocolate sauce.
Plus a scoop of Mint Cookie Swirl. ("Mint flavor with chocolate cookies and fudge swirl.")
And two scoops of coconut-milk-based Dubliner, ("coffee flavor with chocolate cookies, fudge swirls, and Irish Whiskey.") The flavor of the Dubliner was a little subtle compared to the mint, but once I got into it, it was all really remarkable.
The service was great. I met a fellow vegan yelper.
The grand total for my gluttonous orgy of ice cream, including the sundae, was under $12.
I ate every last spoonful (and complained bitterly when the bus came before I could finish drinking the chocolaty dregs.)
There are pictures.
I have no regrets. -

Keepin' this short, it's all been said before, but I needed to toss my 5 stars on top of the pile.
Best vegan ice cream I've ever had, ever. Not into soy? Lucky you, the vegan options made with coconut milk are amazing.
Where else could I possibly get a vegan ice cream birthday cake, with vegan brownie crust? No where. Not to mention at no added cost they added a photo on top of the cake.
I love you Maggie Mudd, and if I lived closer to you I'd certainly be a happily indulged 750 pound vegan.Listed in: SF: Vegan spots

Crazy. Fresh. Excessive (?)
Such a quaint outward appearance for such outlandish treats! The moment you walk in, you're greeted by a human sized ice cream cone!! It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!!
Despite my gf's taking 10 minutes to decide which masterpiece we wanted, the guy behind the counter a)was extremely patient and kind, and b) probably thought we were high out of our minds (we were not).
Important life choices that will cross your path at MM's:
1. Which sundae has the most scoops? (Waffle sundae and Banana Split)
2. Which flavors should I get?! (this could take a while...)
3. Do we want fruity or chocolate-y??
and most importantly....
4. ARE THE WAFFLES FRESH?!!? --- HECK YES!
A third of the Waffle sundae put me in an intoxicating coma. Couldn't shovel down one more rainbow sprinkle...but could certainly have had 100 more fresh waffle pieces!!
$8 - cost of putting yourself in the best kind of coma imaginable. Best when shared with friends :) -

One time when I thought I was giving up sweets for Lent, before I realized that because no one holds me to particular religious beliefs anymore, I don't have to go through the motions of abiding by the behavioral dictates of a particular time of year (sorry, Jesus, but I'm done), my boyfriend took me to MaggieMudd for one last stomach-filling sugar binge, ostensibly to tide me over until Palm Sunday.
During dinner, I had the aforementioned epiphany, leading my boyfriend to note that this was not getting me out of an enormous ice cream sundae. As if I needed to be talked into it. What's up, gluttony. We ate at a mediocre Italian place up the street (review to come later, mediocre Italian place with a misleading menu), and then walked down the hill a bit to the teeny little nook that is MaggieMudd's storefront.
We walked in, and we stared. We stared and stared and stared. Look, I said, Look at all the sundaes they can make vegan! Look at all the varieties of soy- and coconut-milk ice cream! O the anticipation was high. See, vegan ice cream is generally, well, off. If it doesn't have a weird soy-aftertaste, it's grainy, or more icy than creamy, or any other of the myriad problems you can have with food imitation. The best soy-cream product I'd had before our venture to Bernal Heights was Tofutti Cuties, and those things are so full of weird chemicals and saturated fats you might as well be eating Kraft Dinner with a bacon spoon.
Right, so, the flavors, they seemed limitless. The sundaes, decadent. I had some peanut butter-chocolate-cookie bits concoction with peanut butter and chocolate syrups. I couldn't finish it, though heaven knows I wanted to. I let my boyfriend slurp up the last melty bits of it and wished I were as bottomless a pit.
Their lemon-poppyseed coconut-milk ice cream is perfection in the realm of frozen citrus desserts. They make the waffle cones in front of you so they are hot when you get them and cool and harden in your hand while the ice cream gently melts.
Minus points for the "non-dairy" whipped topping, which seemed suspect. Of course it could have been the gorging that gave me and my boyfriend both upset stomachs, but you never know with dairy. It's sneaky and totally out to get you. Plus points for the pints being (nearly) as good as the ice cream in-house. Minus points to every grocery store that doesn't carry it, though I don't think that's MaggieMudd's fault.Listed in: Mr. Rogers, my boyfriend and…

I want to roll around in maggie mudds amazing vegan ice cream and then lick it off of myself for days at a time. I am serious. I dream about it.
This is the kind of place you have to go when you are ready for a sugar buzz and have friends to share it with. The sundaes are massive. I thought I was going to have to dive in and swim in all the goodness. -

I was eating across the road at Moki's when I noticed a large, fibreglass icecream cone hovering in a green doorway across the road. On further investigation, I realised it was an ice cream joint. Oh yawn, I'm thinking, another place I can drool over from afar while my meatmouth friends get their jollies. But then something caught my eye: dairy free. What? Dairy free? It can't be true. No, surely not in San Francisco where good vegan restaurants go out of business and Herbivore is held on high. Approaching the counter with trepidation, I asked in a trembling voice, Please sir, is your dairy free icecream vegan? The answer came as if from the trumpets of gilded angels: yes.
Since that sweet day, I have only been more and more impressed with Maggie Mudd and the owners of the place. They are so kind to us poor vegans, even going so far as to offer vegan marshmallows and agave syrup as a substitute for honey. Vegan chocolate brownie banana split with whipped cream and a cherry on top? NO PROBLEM! Vegan Cookies and Cream milkshake with chocolate sprinkles? OH HELL YES. Vegan lemon and poppy icecream in a hot n' fresh waffle cone? Good lord, it's like they're a wet dream plucked from my deepest piggy desires.
Maggie Mudd got everything right. I worship at their altar. I kiss their feet. But most importantly, I scarf down their icecream at any chance I get. -

Yesterday I woke up in a nasty funk, and couldn't snap out of it.I tried going on a bike ride on a beautiful day, but I couldn't stop hating: hating traffic, hating pedestrians, hating Harrison Street Fair for making me go around, hating GGP for having too many hippies in it, hating my girlfriend for being so understanding, hating the sun for being just the wrong shade of bright, hating BM for emptying out the city of all my friends that I was hating...
And my girlfriend and landlord took me to Maggie Mudd, where I had two giant scoops of mint chocolate chip ice cream, and then poured a bunch of beer in me, and then got me stoned and fed me homemade anchovy pizza and fresh fruit and made me watch Family Guy and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, all of which made for a 100% recovery.
For serious: periods suck.
