This place is great! The Pasta dishes are really good fav of mine is the baked ziti with a Chicken Parm on top. Also  when getting this ask for extra cheese and sauce if your into that and they reheat it for you. Def the way to go. Also the Pizza is very good NYC style. The heros are also very good. Staff is nice and quick and the food is the right price.

    I would say Maffei's is above a 4 but not a 5

My first grandma slice - life altering.

I tried the fancier slices too - but the cheese and the grandma slices are still the best.

Really good pizza here. The "gourmet" slices are a little on the pricey side but the cheese lover's, meat lover's and vodka slices are all well worth the money.

Maffei gets pretty packed at lunch time but the service is super quick.

I used to LOVE this place! I used to work across the street at the old B&N back in senior yr. H.S./freshman yr. college and I would always jump in here for food that actually fit my budget.  All I gotta say is GRANDMA SLICE- great workers too! YUM!!!!!!

Maffei's has recently undergone a facelift, but despite the new facade the pizza is still awesome.  Honestly, I really only go for the grandma slices (smallish, but tasty and always made fresh because they turn over so often) and white slices (dense and with a crunchy crust, almost like a deep-dish pizza).

If I'm anywhere in Chelsea or Union Square and craving a slice, Maffei's is my go-to spot.

This is real deal fold-in-half NY style pizza. The place is no frills and the pizza rocks. The sandwiches are huge (enough for two meals) and are super cheap. I'll continue to be a regular here.

Ambiance - Few places to sit and dine. Ok if its not busy though.
    Prices - reasonable.
    Slices - decent sizes.

Had the deep dish pizza w/eggplant and ricotta. Price was $4/slice. Was excellent!

    Will definitely be back.

The food here is pretty much par for the course for a New York pizzeria.  Basing on food alone, I'd probably give 3 stars.  They lost 1 extra star however for the poor service.

During a lunchtime rush, the place can get pretty packed and it becomes something of a free-for-all when ordering.  What makes this worse is that they will give precedence to their buddies who have just walked in the door over somebody who has been waiting quite awhile to make their order.  That's just not good business, especially when there are so many other pizzerias around with food that is just as good if not better.

I saw the sign enforcing a $10 minimum for card purchases and had little reason to hope, since I only had two dollar bills and a quarter stuck in my billfold.

Still, the fragrance of this place at 10 a.m. compelled me to walk right in and ask how much their plain slice costs. $2.50, the man informed me. Thinking aloud, I mumbled, "Man, if only I had one more quarter. I totally did, but I left it at home!"

Without letting a beat go by, he interjected,
"Aw, if it's a quarter, I can live with that. That's good enough."

Hesitating at this completely unexpected gesture of largess, I started stammering that I would come back and bring that extra quarter someday. "Nah," he said, dismissing the whole idea with a casual but not flippant wave of the hand. Merrily, he went along, heating my slice, throwing new orders into the oven, turning over plump calzones, and shoveling out garlicky broccoli and other sides for the meandering morning customers.

Feeling like a newsie who was having his day, I looked up with moist eyes at a giant board overhead that housed paper money from all over the world, printed with immortalized ink portraits of iconic leaders of the past and present.

By the way, the cheese and chili flake shakers were the first free-flowing shakers I have found, well, anywhere. Ever. The slice was delectable in its own right, but further enhanced by the intangible sauce of positivity dealt from a hand of kindness and contentment rather than impatience and avarice.

This is the Midtown, old-school New York that I used to idealize - where you can get a homegrown slice on an electrified avenue and where a surviver will give you a break on a coin.

I'll definitely be back with that quarter and more business.

Great pizza.  I came here courtesy of the free pizza from  Tenka: http://www.tenka.com/w...

I never would have set foot in this place just because it looks like every other joint around.  It was a pleasant surprise.  I had the grandma slice, and it was pretty good.  Not the best (I think Bleecker St Pizza has them beat).

I'm also surprised to see that they serve other dishes other than pizza like Hero Parmigiana sandwiches, and they're not that expensive either!  I'll have to come back to try those!

Not the best lookin' place, but I got a free cheese grandma square and it was quite tasty with a lil' crunch to it.

There's some barstools and cameras, though what can a customer really steal from this place?  I guess it's for the workers, which can be harsh...

When I worked on 23rd street a few years back I lived at this place, gained a lil weight because of it too. The grandma's slices are flavourful crispy thin crust olive oil-mozzarella cheese-season- and plump tomato laden portion sized rectangular shaped examples of what a real old school Southern Italian New York style pizza should look, taste, and smell like. Do they still have the lil pasta buffet as well? The buffet's fried calamari, ziti, with a side of sauteed vegetables held me down back in the day.
Maffei's is all about the grandma's slices                                                                                                                                           like Spumoni Gardens is about the squares. All in all though good stuff over all and they open late for all you Chelsea/Meat Packing dist. club heads.

I had an eggplant slice so here we go..

    [eggplant parmesean slice]
What they do is bread thinly sliced eggplant, pan fry it, and then put it on a deep dish pizza.  The first bites were really good, but it got really heavy really fast.

I would read other reviews on how their regular slices are though.

Good though not great. Better than your run of the mill pizzeria, but certainly not one of the best.

Note: Their two slices and a soda for $5 is a great value.  Compared to some of the other places that offer the same for less (but give you truly awful pizza) this is a real bargain.

A slice of pizza in New York City is a lot like a women. Some are soggy, some are burnt, some are doughy, some are greasy and others just don't have any flavor. I used to think the old saying "Sex is like pizza. Even if it's bad, it's still pretty good" was true, until I moved to NYC.

That said, Maffei Pizza's plain slice was actually pretty good. The sauce was tangy with a slight sweetness to it and the dough was on point. Top the whole thing off with a 1/4" of gooey cheese and I think we may have a winner!

Three stars for the slice... now let's try a whole pie!

Not the best NYC slice I've eaten. Too heavy on the cheese and no char on the bottom of the pizza either. Service was quite slow for a pizzeria like this too.

$5 for 2 slices and a small drink (fountain or can)

About 10 bar seats against windows.

I love variety and Maffei's lets you have it mix and match anything on the steam table. Great value. Gorgonzola Pasta!

Grandma slice is great as is the Bacon Cheseburger slice

The Sicilian Margarita was very very good! hot and flavorful, cheesy and greasy good!
The baked eggplant ziti was very cheesy with lots and lots of eggplant inside.

This is a small pizza place with bar stools for a quick lunch in a convenient location.  The little shop was busy during the lunch hour, yet service was fast.  I had a warmed up square slice of the Grandma pizza.  Although the texture and crust were good, the pizza was much too salty and I had to drink a couple bottles of water afterwards.

    I LOVE MAFFEI'S

The pizza is amazing - I love the grandma slice & they make a mean eggplant parm.

I used to work in the neighborhood & visited Maffei's on a regular basis for my morning regular: 2 eggs, sausage, egg and cheese on a roll + a cup of coffee...swear to god these make the best breakfast sandwich ever! They told me they get their bread from Brooklyn and use Italian sausage (no patties for me!) Every morning you'll see many other familiar faces: construction guys, cops, a priest, delivery guys all stepping in for delicious food & friendly conversation.

The guys are super friendly and made me feel at home one of my first winters away from CA.

I still make it a point to step in and grab a bite after running errands in Chelsea & they even remember me after bring away for a few years. If you are shopping @ BBB, Filine's, Container Store, the new Limelight or Home Depot - step in and enjoy a a damn good slice (or the best sausage-egg-and-cheese).

    I miss you MAFFEI's!

    Seriously awesome pizza!

Talk about getting creative, today Maffei served up a cheeseburger slice and a lasagna slice, and combined I must have consumed more meat than any other dish could deliver.  The experience was fantastic.

In addition to the pizza, I was very impressed with the cold and hot dishes on display. There was an uncommon array of seafood dishes and rich looking dishes that will warrant another trip back very soon to investigate.

If you're in the neighborhood and need to get a slice, this is the place to go.

Two choices - grandma slice or pie.  That's all I ever eat here and it's all I want.  Love it either plain or with a couple of toppings.  While I'm glad of the artisanal pizza wave I will always keep Maffei in my rotation.

FYI, they also have a pizza truck (@pizzatrucknyc) with $1 grandma slices.

Bait and switch fraud.  Maffei Pizza offered a "deal of the day" (not Groupon, but from a site which offered numerous offers from other merchants who did not conduct fraud.) type offer where you paid $10 upfront for a voucher for "$20 at Maffei Pizza".  When I went in to use it, the employees had no idea about it and phoned the manager who told me (over the phone) that they would not accept it.  Do not patronize a business which conducts fraud, and a bait and switch scheme.

DELICIOUS. The pizza is a treat. The dishes (broccoli, lasagna, etc) aren't exactly of the low cal variety, and you'll enjoy every second of it.
If you're even THINKING about going into one of those crap pizza chains around NY, STOP and walk over to Maffei's for a proper slice. the Grandma slice is divine.

When I get the munchies, I need food quickly, and it has to be filling. On one such starry night, I found myself out of dinner ideas, and just walking around waiting for something to jump out at me. Then the craving hit me, and it hit me hard. I had a craving for spaghetti with meatballs and sausages. The total was $9, expensive for fast food, but not expensive for dinner, or for how large the order was.

First to plate was two humongous meatballs. Next to plate was the spaghetti. Last to plate, sliced up Italian sausages. It comes with free bread too. The order was massive. I knew that I couldn't finish it. But, I was hungry, and I was craving this really bad. I knew the experience would be incredible. And, so it was.

A bite of spaghetti and meatballs, a bite of spaghetti and sausages, a bite of meatballs & sausages. Cut, skewer, and repeat. And, so I continued until I started feeling bloated. At which point, my plate was 80% done. But, the food was soo good I couldn't stop. I slowly forced myself to bring my plate to 90% completion. And, that's how you conquer a craving.

The meatballs themselves seem to have contained more breading  (or whatever filler ingredient they used) than actual meat itself. However, they were disguised well with the spices.

FYI, Rated #12 Best Italian Pizza Restaurant in New York by the Village Voice, or so it says on their menu. Irrespective of that claim, I'd still go back.

I enjoy the Grandma's Slice here all the time . It never fails to deliver. Believe me Maffei's has its loyal followers and i'm one of them. I had to stop there last week after not eating there in almost 16 months.

The Grandma's: Still a square piece of delicious gastronomy!
The Croquettes : Tasty and Filling!
The Owner: Still personable and in his dirty apron!
The entrees/sides: As 'stick-to-your-ribs-good' as the  first time I tried them.

A nice lil' New York Pizza Joint endures, oblivious to the changes constantly taking place around it.
Businesses come, businesses go. Maffei still stands.
Lets hope it stays that way.

In a rush to grab something to eat while I ran some errands, I jumped into this joint to get me a slice...and boy, was I surprised.

They have this slice style called 'grandma', which is a median between a sicilian slice & a deep-dish. I had the the one with ricotta on top...let me tell ya: me loved it long time!

Their food bar looked sooo tempting as well. I can honestly say that all that I saw displayed I would have requested, if I was in a gluttonous mood.

I'm definitely going back to try a lil some of this & a lil some of that.

P.S. the fact that my Mexican brethren run this place does not make me biased at aaall...ha!

There is a part of the American brain, nestled next to the centers for humping and sleeping, that is activated by cheap Italian food. This little pleasure center was absolutely detonated by Maffei's.

No, but seriously, this place is killer. No frills, just big cheap portions of hearty Italian fare. Ziti, meatball subs, sausage and pepper hero sandwiches, and the best damn slice of pizza I've yet to try in this city (and I've had a few).

It was inauspiciously hiding around the corner from the office, so we took notice of the $.50 off board outside and ventured in. Cramped but prompt, I got a massive sausage and pepper sub while my coworking compatriot got a $2 grandma slice*. We both scampered back to the office toute suite and merrily devoured our catch. Bread, marinara sauce, sausage, peppers, onions. Simple, yet well executed and cheap ($6 for enough for 2 people!). We will be going there again, believe me. But now having satiated that part of me, I need to hump and sleep. So be warned. Maffei's will make you tired and horny.

*No grandma's were harmed in the making of this pizza.
