I was worried that I wouldn't find a place in my new 'hood to try out new lotions and soaps, so I was thrilled to stumble upon MadKat. How cute is the claw foot tub upstairs full of the brightly colored loofahs! Love it.
Now if only they carried my beloved Bumble & Bumble...
Sadly, this lovely shop closed its North Beach storefront. Their store in Cole Valley is still going strong, and the empty storefront on Grant remains vacant.
I'm so sad that this place closed down. I saw some Sale sign a month or so earlier...next thing you know the place is empty and now For Rent sign on the window.

I thought all they carry was hair products and accessories because that's all I see when I walk by.… Read more »
I adore this little beauty shop. Now, since I like northbeach so much anyplace is just a little shinier and nice to me if it's in this neighborhood so i might not have the same attachment to it if it were in say, the marina. Anywho, it was a great addition to Grant. Very cute inside, nice decor and nice staff. I love the loft affect and all the brands they carry are pretty top notch. I like to get gifts from here, but also my own hair care products. I always leave with something that makes me happy. They also carry a few guys lines which is good so the boy doesn't mind stopping in with me. I really like their yummy smelling candle selection, that's always an instant hit as a little hostess gift or a nice pick me up present to a friend that's feeling blue.
I looooooooove MadKat in Cole Valley and was thrilled when I passed by this location in North Beach, only a block from my office! The staff is always friendly and extremely helpful. I came in to get some Dermalogica cleanser yesterday, and the sales associate didn't try to talk me into the larger size. She even agreed with me that the small size was sufficient to last for a long time. Love it!
Well-stocked beauty shop while still being very cute and personable, with friendly and knowledgeable salespeople: MadKat is the best of both worlds!
Great people who work here! The staff are sweet, caring and aren't too pushy with products. And man, do they have a lot of products! Here's just a few scenarios:
#1
Crazy break out face that's resulted in me looking like a 15 year old again...ah! Run downstairs to MadKat and sweet salesgirl shows me to the Dermalogica section and she not only provides me with a complete overview of their products as well as some other lines but also gives me some free samples to try out. I no longer look 15, thank goodness!

Friday night and the girls and I are getting ready in my apartment. Music bumpin, bottle of wine already open and girls at every mirror trying to put on make up and do hair. What happens? My freakin curling iron breaks in half in the middle of my hair session. Boop a doop I run downstairs and once again sweet salesgirl explains to me which one to buy (aka didn't break my budget cause i didn't need to) and i buy the curling iron that's right for me. Sure, it was kinda pricey, but I know this one will actually last me awhile! The thing works great btw. I went back for a straightener just the other day...
MadKat is the only high end beauty supply store in North Beach. Sure, there's plenty of salons that sell stuff, but they usually only carry about 2 or 3 different lines. And those are not stores. MadKat carries everything from hair products to moisturizers and candles, lotions, bags and even men's deodorant.
Possibly the best thing about this place is the service. The girls that work there are extremely friendly and will help you find the right product. They will even get on the phone to their coworkers for second opinions. Most of the girls that work there have curly hair, as do I. So they can really recommend a lot of stuff for curly hair problems. And they always ask that you come back let them now how the product worked for you. Now that's a sure sign of a store that cares.
Tips:
*They have a frequent buyer card. Fill it up and you get $10 off.
*Don't go in there when it's hot, it's a furnace in there.
*Go in there when you're bored, they're super friendly and they'll chat with you.
*Go place for last minute gift buying.
*Doggie friendly
Minus 1 star because they really don't have too many environmentally friendly/ animal test free products
Mad Kat is a great addition to North Beach for people like me who are mildly OCD about their soaps and body products. I was walking around the hood on the hunt for a store that sold natural soaps and stumbled upon Mad Kat. The salesperson was very friendly and pointed out their extensive collection of soaps. I recommend trying the Roger & Gallet line all of the fragrances were mild and pleasant and the soap feels great on your skin.
Glad to see Madkat, but sad to see the cute little beauty supply place on Columbus going out of business. Ah well at least it makes Grant smell like sweet tarts, which is always welcome.
I would give them 5 stars if they carried bumble and bumble. Also, the girl there, while friendly, was pretty off in her recommendations. I was having an oil issue and the tea-tre shampoo while doing nice things for my scalp just made my hair MORE oily, and the hair product recommended isn't for me either and at those prices it's a bit of a bummer.
Still, I appreciated that she took the time to call the owner and double check her selections which is really tops in customers service. So i'd give it another shot.
Lots of high-end beauty products, which I like. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of non-tested on animals beauty products. MOP brand is about the only one I saw that specifically said NOT tested on animals.
I'll be honest. If hooking a monkey's brain up to a car battery will cure Alzheimer's, I've got two things to say: the red's positive and the black's negative.
But I'm not willing to spray chemicals in a bunny's eyeball just to have *possibly* shinier hair. I'm shallow and vain. But not THAT shallow and vain.
This is San Francisco. I thought this city was filled with people who care about that kind of thing. And there are plenty of high-end products that don't test on animals (Bumble & Bumble, my go-to hair products, are coming to mind). So why doesn't this shop stock them?
But they do stock Dermatalogica, which I love and doesn't squirt chemicals in bunnies' eyes. And their purses upstairs are cool.
Plus, they have all kinds of cool hair clips, and since I only like to wear my hair down if I'm going out on the town, this place comes in quite handy.
Another star because it just looks so cute in my neighborhood.
Reminds me of PureBeauty .They sell a lot of hair products , hair straighteners , lotions , candles , etc . I think it's really cute how they have a little bathtub on the second floor as decoration . It's really cool how they have drawers labeled A - Z each containing a different candle / smell . Oh , and they carry OPI and Dermalogica too !
Ya not all of us need $50 face wash all the time - but when you do they got it. And if you need a quick present on the go - you are set. NOW the real hidden beauty of this bright little store on Grant is the upstairs purse section - Ladies (and gentlemen who are inclined) there are some cute bags upstairs in the $20-$40 range which should not be missed, Unless you get to the little green clutch before - back off that one it totally mine!
A welcome addition to the ever growing shopping mecca of Grant Street. This store carries tons of hair goodies, including dryers, straightners, tongs, tigi, mop, denman and lots more lovely shiny bottles...oh and dermalogica too
Cute small space with a plethora of beauty needs. I was going to go to the Cole street store but because it was raining cats and dogs outside I decided to venture to North Beach and explore. This store carries prestige hair products for all, men's skincare, skincare, delicious bath and body scrubs, soaps, and lotions. Although the space was small and the lights were out I ended up spending a substantial amount of time smelling every candle and realizing I wanted everything in the store. They have the top of the line hair , manicure, pedicure, and bath tools you would need to primp and beautify. The customer service was great and the rep gave me my own time to browse without the badgering like some others. On the first floor the carry the hair products including tools as well as manicure, pedicure, skincare, and some bath time needs. The upstairs loft area carries more candles, bath products, jewelry-YES there is jewelry -and linen water.
Madkat is a great place to buy gifts and indulge yourself with some-me- time.
great place for hair products. i like the little hair clips =]
Great selection and the sales people are very friendly. I went in to look for a specific type of product and teh sales guy got on the phone to ask a co-worker. Now that is a hit with me! Will be back!
