We spotted this place last year, when we rode by on bikes and saw folks lounging in the sun, ice cream cones in hand, on the chairs and benches that dotted the Madison sidewalk. Very cute, very chill.
They serve coffee drinks and lots of baked goods and they offer a few paninis, which the sign defines as grilled sandwiches - nice touch. We had a chocolate chip cookie and it was excellent and I feel like next time we'll try something more ambitious from the bakery.
The Beanery sells Gifford's Ice Cream and I got the raspberry yogurt with chocolate chips. It's tasty and well-made and not just some low-fat afterthought. The ice cream we got - caramel cashew, maybe - wasn't as impressive.
But why am spending so much time on this ice cream info when the new Ashley's (located in a bland courtyard nearby) will surely put the Beanery's ice cream counter out of business? Well, we can get Ashley's anytime we want and we never do.
And I have a sense that the Beanery will survive on the strength of its coffee, bakery items and charming location. At least, I hope so.
