Walnut Creek, CA
I had heard a lot about this place as people remembered their college years. When I was in town visiting, it was a must to stop here. Although I had heard about the jiffy burger, I opted for the papa bear burger.
The place has tons of decorations to look at, the kids working the counter and kitchen were having fun with their job. I enjoyed the booths and atmosphere. The food was good, I suggest a side of their amazing ranch to dip your fries in! -

Burgers and fries are delicious. But, seriously, eight bucks for a Caesar salad with (maybe) a couple ounces of chicken? Seriously? I could scrape up more chicken from the puke that lines your sidewalks at 2am.
Other than that, I always enjoy myself and the drink specials when I come here and the patio is great in the warmer months as long as I ignore the giggling, bromance wrestling that will inevitably occur as the night progresses. -

Great burgers!
The staff is, well, unique. It's good to see people having fun, but I've seen them mock customers openly, and at times the "frat-boy" shenanigans are overboard.
This place is a bar first, and everything else second. So if you can remember that, it all works out. -

Chico, CA
The good:
-Three levels with something for all types. Booths up front for friends, open area out back for chilling, pool tables and a dance floor up top.
-Cheap drink specials. The back bar pours the shots for mixed drinks in front of you, so you know they are legit. Adios Mf*ers!
-Overpriced, but randomly good burger. Varies from flavorless to tasty - depends on who is grilling.
-Next to campus and multiple tables to eat at.
The bad:
-Dance floor is crowded and small. Music is eclectic. Mostly hip-hop with the odd dance song.
-Better off getting bacon wrapped hot dogs down the street from the crazy-eyed, bearded dude. Mmm... bacon.
-Bartenders at front tend to rip you off. Pricey drinks when not on special. Much of the staff seem to have an attitude problem. The outside bartenders are cool, though.
-Not enough bathrooms. Even a wait for the men's.
-Pool tables are always in use or missing balls.
-Random, instant closing times. Have had friends buy a drink and get kicked out seconds later. Did not even let them use the bathroom! One of the bouncers even apologized for it, said it was management's decision.
-Met a self-described "drug dealer" last time. Seriously.
-Age range: 21-21. Nearly everyone older has graduated to better bars.
This place is decorated like PeeWee's playhouse and is generally either dead or rocking. Been there a few times and generally end up scratching my head why I came there. This is probably one of the first bars CSUC students go to when they turn 21, so I think the Yelp! ratings have a nostalgia effect going on. The Beach or La Salle's offer better dance floors, University Bar offers a better place to chill, The Banshee offers better food (so I have heard). I look at the Bear objectively and give it two stars, because it is one of the only places in Chico with a dance floor and it is definitely unique. -

As far as Chico burgers go, the Bear is still the best. Better than Nobby's, Big Chico burger, Burger Hut, etc. There are a ton of specialty burgers to choose from. My personal favorite is the Jiffy Burger. Pepper jack cheese, bacon, and peanut butter (I usually tell them hold the mayo).

Camarillo, CA
Chico scares the shit out of me.
I attempted to go to college in said town. Unfortunately, I fell victim to the constant influence of drinking and sleeping with strange women. Seriously, what would you do? Go to class or party and get laid? After all, I was 19-21. Who wants to be responsible at that age? Not me. Oh, and I forgot to mention my roommates worked at the Bear and Woodstocks so I basically got everything for free.... Way too much temptation.
I'll describe my eventual downfall at the end of this review. My purpose on earth is for people to learn from my mistakes....
Back to the bear. As I touched on earlier my roommates worked here. Climbing up the ladder some eventually became bartenders. This was a very bad thing. This meant more fuel for my alcoholic fire. This also meant I would eat a lot of 1/2 off bear food. Say bye to 6-pack. To this day I still can not acquire said physique.
Here is an example of what I had to endure at this establishment...
I decided to go with my roommate to pick up his paycheck on Valentines Day. We both had beautiful/loving/caring girlfriends. We planned to make dinner for them that evening. I've always been a romantic, and this was a cheap way to show my affection. After all. We're young. No 1 on 1 dates. You always have to party with your friends. Plus, it gave us an excuse to clean our filthy house (compliments of glade air fresheners)...
So we walk into the bear, one of his managers was bartending. Evidently when you become a manager you can supply drinks at no cost. Manager (name withheld/this was 10+ years ago) asked us what we were doing for our girlfriends for V-Day. We described how we were going to make a lovely meal, drink wine, see if they would be into anal... (by putting their fingers in us) He saw this as an opening.... Knowing our weaknesses for saying no to free booze. He proceeded to pour the stoplight shot. You know. The green/yellow/red one? 3 shots? And they always use 100 proof crap there..... Bad beginning to our MORNING.
As always we could not refuse. We took the shots and said thank you. Tried to leave when a large bouncer (who was a busboy also) told us to sit down or he would kill us. Basically we ended up, at 11am, drinking a god forsaken amount of hard alcohol. We literally had a crowd around us and the bartender/manager on the PA announcing our shots, 15+, and how bad we were going to ruin valentines day for our girlfriends.
Once the crowd grew to an unmanageable amount I decided this was my time to make a break for it. I grabbed the glass tip jar off the bar and tried to run out. Only to drop the jar, smash it all over the floor, try to pick up the money but instead slashing my hands on the broken glass. Our friend, the bouncer from before grabbed me and asked if I was ok. My hands were gushing thin, alcohol laced blood. He wrapped my hands and told me to leave, that I had enough. I think people cheered for me but who the hell knows?
To make this story short, we left the bear at approx 2pm. Drunk off our assess. We lived a few blocks away on east 4th street so walked back. Didn't get food for dinner. Decided to take a nap to sober up... Did that go well? Well, judge for yourself....
Our girlfriends showed up to see us still passed out. My girlfriend thought it was funny. (she brought roses and a framed picture of us for valentines day) She was so cool. Taking my lead she walked into the kitchen, grabbed a bottle of whiskey and coke, came back in the room and drank until she was intoxicated as I. My roommate? His girlfriend was very upset. After enough munipulation she came to the conclusion this was not our fault and we meant well. She ordered a pizza for us. Valentines dat pizza. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. That's love in a greasy circular form....
Nonetheless, at the end of the night all was forgiven. These were awesome times. If I tried to pull that shit with my wife? Good luck. She would be serving divorce papers instead of pizza. And no way would she stick her fingers in my bottom.....
Moral of this story is... Stay in school. Alcohol, all be it fun, causes problems later in life. If you're going to drink, be responsible. Total oxymoron but just try it. Learn from me. Due to me being the most incredible partier in Chico Circa 1999 I can say it comes with consequences. I had to move to FRESNO to finish school. FRESNO. That should scare you straight.
Enjoy Chico everyone. It is a fun place.Listed in: A few of my favorite places.

One of my favourite place in Chico!
Good to watch games
Good to hang out and talk
Good to dance
Good to have good burger and good beer for low rates!
Good to celebrate
They have a special offer everyday, so everyone can find something nice when he comes.
The place is huge!
2 levels inside and one giant patio outside.
4 different bars, 1 pool-table area, 1 dancing spot up-strairs.
The EPIC decoration is unique and make it very special...
They make this Jiffy-burger based on Jiff peanut-butter... sounds weird and fat... and it is! But it's a must-try.
The classical Bear-burger works perfectly and is a good value!
You have to go there! -

Chico, CA
The food here is terrible (except for the fries), but the reason they get people in is because they pump the smell out into the streets. Who doesn't love the smell of burgers on the grill? The smell does not reflect a good burger though, because I am ALWAYS disappointed. I have been there a dozen times and each time, I only went because I was leaving class and could smell the grill. I was disappointed each time after.
Also, no one likes going to a place to get a burger in the middle of the day and having to wait in a separate line at the bar for a soda. I get that this is a bar at night where people get drunk, but most people going in there at noon would like a soda or even a water to drink, but you'll still have to wait in a bar line and pay separate from your food.
And um, can you say filthy? The tables and seats are, EVERY SINGLE TIME, grimy and gross and sticky to the touch. I feel like you can get hepatitis from just sitting here. -

My Confession:
Location: The Bear- 2nd Floor
When: Saturday Night
Yes, the girl grinding against the giant speaker was me..
Generally, The Bear reminds me of an antique shop on acid. The ceiling is cluttered with random things (things like a carriage, antelope heads, and life-size ceramic horse).
I'm not going to lie, it smells foul inside The Bear. Really, there is a rank stench that come from the woodwork that screams health hazard. Don't be put off, there is an outside patio, mm yes, got to love that fresh air.
What more can I say? Saturday nights, you'll notice most of the men wear collared shirts from Buckle (oh yes, they most definitely purchased those shirts at Buckle) and the women only trust three men: Jack, Jim and Jose.
Enough said. -

Chico, CA
Oh THE BEAR...you gotta love this fixture of Chico. Its not 5 star food but that's not the point. It is fun and relaxed. you could sit there all day and just talk and drink some beer. I love their funky decor and the beer garden outside setup, totally cool. This has been one of my favorite places to hang since I moved to Chico years ago. They have low priced and tasty food and a good selection of beer. I know this sounds weird but my all time favorite burger there is the Jiffy burger. Sounds gross and crazy bur ties a cheeseburger with thick bacon and peanut butter. I was afraid to try it for years but once I did I fell in love. Add some garlic curly fries to it and you got a winning meal.
It's also a crowded yet fun nightlife place to hang. There are 4 bars a dance floor and ample places to chill with your friends. It isn't a relaxing adult cocktail lounge so expect the college ages crowd at night and long lines outside. -

This place is amazing. My boyfriend and a couple friends came to Chico to celebrate my 21st. This was our first stop. Had the Bear burger in Paradise with Jack cheese. Soooo good.
Its great to go with the family during the day but they have a curfew for minors. They'll come around and ask to see ID's and make sure everybody is 21. Try the Nuclear Kamikazee. The upstairs dance floor annd bar is a lot of fun, with actual good music and you can talk to your party without having to scream. It gets a little crowded, but that just shows you how good it is. :) and if you have a little "too" much fun the night before at the Bear, go on over to Mom's Brunch Restaurant. They own the MBG and are the nicest people. -

Ahh, Madison Bear Garden, or "The Bear," as the locals know it, is probably one of the most famous bars in NorCal. It is a must-see for anyone visiting Chico, and a staple for frugal bar-hoppers.
Friday and Saturday nights are especially busy, so avoid the Bear if you don't like large crowds. Otherwise this is a fun place to get a drink and hang out with friends. There are always lots of good drink specials, and the staff is friendly and professional.
Avoid the food if possible. It's cheap, but guaranteed to disappoint. -

The Bear is my favorite place in Chico. Any time of day, any day of the week, I want to be here. It is my happy place.
Food- Delicious burgers. A burger with peanut butter on it? Yes please.
Drinks- Beer is all I need to be happy. And they have it here. I've seen some good specials/deals too. They also have great drinks (besides just beer, if your a pussy and only drink cosmos or some shit).
Dance- The back patio on a spring/summer night is perfection. Great music out back to just sort of hang out to and drink, sit around etc. Up stairs is where I GET DOWN. Always a good time. And another bar. What could be better? Oh, the fact that there is actually FOUR BARS. One upstairs, two downstairs, and one outside in the back patio. You will never be thirsty here. -

I love the BEAR but am giving it one star because I went to the Trike Races back in 2010, got the fastest time, but some chick named Rozzy (I think that was her name) was being a complete b*tch and decided to hook up her friend(s) with the t-shirts and bear bucks. when i politely confronted her on this, she said, "fuck you, asshole" and threw 7 bear bucks in my face.
i emailed management and got an apology, was told they would "discuss" this with their staff at the next meeting, but never got a shirt.
overall, this place rocks, i still go here with my friends, but try not to spend any of my money here.
funny how a one-time negative experience can ruin a place for you.
the sad thing is i still recommend this place to others because its a Chico landmark and I have so many memories there, but I'm still sticking to my one out of five star review for now. -

It's the Bear. It's awesome. Duh.
I like being able to come in on a Saturday afternoon, have a few shots and drinks with friends while munching on some fried zooks, and people watching. The adult crowd that comes in can be pretty humorous sometimes, they all can't handle their liquor like us youngin's.
The Bear is a good place to go pretty much anytime with anyone. I can go here when my parents are visiting or on a Friday night for a more "fun" time.
The people working here are always nice too, never had a grumpy bartender, bouncer. -

Holy crap, I liked this place when I was just drinking. And then I tried the food. With Chico being my hometown, I could not believe that it took me this long to actually get a burger here. After hearing so much about it from my peers around me, I decided to try the food.
The burger I had was AMAZING. It was cooked perfect and it was so juicy and tasty. The fries were my favorite part, I could eat these ALL the time.Listed in: Best Happy Hour

Glad I finally was able to visit MBG. After catching a morning flight into Sacramento, my brother and I drove directly to the Bear to get lunch. As experienced eaters, we agreed more of the menu could be conquered if we divided our efforts and shared half of each meal we ordered.
We chose the Jiffy burger, and the blues burger- appropriately topped with peanut butter, and blue cheese respectively. Hot, fresh, delicious, and the perfect amount of flavor from all components coming together inside my mouth. We had sides of fries and rings to share and a pitcher of Lost Coast Great White to wash it all down.
Overall a fun atmosphere and good food, will definitely be returning! -

My husband is originally from Chico, and he kept telling me about the Jiffy Burger at the MBG. I always thought it sounded absolutely disgusting, so when we were in town visiting from Vancouver, BC, we had to stop by so I could check it out.
Well, I'm happy to say that I was wrong. It was delicious! Peanut butter on a burger -who would have thought?
The MBG itself is interesting. There are tons of knick knacks to look at, and it has the standard dirty feel of a college bar. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing -it is what it is. While eating, I was thoroughly amused by this guy that was hitting on some girls at a table near us. Good times. -

This was a really cool place to hang out. I went with my family. Yes it's ok to bring your family. It's really more of a hang out spot for college students. The place is set up really fun. With all sorts of odds and ends. Big bar and Menus on the wall. The food was pretty great. Not 5 star! In all a pretty awesome burger joint. You should definitely check it out! Too much fun and lots of cute singles if you're looking!

Really, do you need to rate it? This place is iconic...known by many as THE spot in Chico...Came here for the first time in 1999 with my family for my Chico State tour....little did I know I would have many lasting memories here along with meeting my man....(I know). Recently here realizing that I am the only one getting older (that horse hanging from the ceiling is dead). You can eat mass amounts of curly fries and drink more than you ever thought for around $12. Sound appealing? Get yourself over to the Bear!

Ahh the good ol famous Madison Bear Garden of Chico Califo.
This place has your good ol American dining food. The burgers are delicious and fatty with the best fries and it's awesome.
but when 1000pm rolls around, the restaurant changes...
It's awesome
Theres a whole outside area with a bar or 2, there is tons of seating, tons of people and tons of mingling which is nice on a hot summer night. The inside has lots of bars... so pretty much you will not have a hard time finding a spot to grab a drink, every where you go there are bars. There's an upstairs for dancing and the trike races ( I have yet to see but i hear they're awesome and fun) then there is also a few pool tables and a toilet for the ladies which reads at the top "You look fabulous" which is a definite confident booster when you are feeling and probably looking like you have drinkin way too much.
This place is good for both a good ol burger and a good ol time. -

I really miss the Bear since I moved out of Chico. I've had so many great times there. First, before i get carried away talking about the great nightlife there, lemme talk for a minute about the food. The burgers at the Bear are ahhh-mazing! They are meaty messy goodness, and the curly fries that come with?! Perfection! I also love when they have the kitchen open late so you can get your grub on while you get your drink on!
Speaking of getting your drink on... the Bear has a great selection of shots and specialty drinks and there are 4 bars in the whole place (2 downstairs, one upstairs and one on the patio) so you usually don't have to wait too long for a drink or a shot. And the shots, they have some great shots, the Scooby Snack, Woo-woo, Stoplight (that's 3 shots, a red, yellow and green one, so it looks like a stoplight, get it?) I remember back in the day (2004) when the shots were only $1 each on Saturday nights, but nothing lasts forever you know. Anyway, I still go back to the Bear when I'm in town and it's always a great time, and even tho some of the prices have gone up, you can still get drunk there for under $20 (and have money leftover for some cheese fries!)Listed in: Hometown Faves!

I liked this place because it was spacious so even on Halloween Eve, when there were swarms of people, I didn't feel like I was smashed in between a Snookie and a pirate. Never tried the food, but coming from San Francisco where tiny cocktail costs $8, I appreciated the good bang-for-your buck drinks.
Props to:
-The bartender that agreed to fill my whole pitcher with water so I could stay sufficiently hydrated
-good Drink prices
-good music
-the friends that i came with
-no cover
Poops to: (poops are the opposite of props btw)
-the jerk who elbow-ed me in the chin on his way out (you deserved that punch to the neck!)
-the bouncer who wouldn't let me sit on the sidewalk outside the bar (Ok, I know it's not cool to sit on the sidewalk next to ANY bars, but at the time, I would have really appreciated sitting down!)
Wouldn't mind returning! -

Best buffalo wings ever!! I mean the whole extremity included. You order them in pounds. Have yet to hear of a better spice, size and price in all of Northern Cali.
Plus DJ music as they're being served later into the night. Nothing like dancing and licking your fingers simultaneously. Warning: this could be taken as promiscuous gesturing, be sure to point to the wings on your table; which could possibly make the matter worse, or better depending on the nightly goal. -

Everyone who has been to Chico, CA has seen or been to "The Bear." Madison Bear Garden is great from lunch time burgers and fries to night life drinks and dancing. Their wide range of variety makes for a premium place to be, while visiting!
The atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights can include a wait to get inside, however, there is never a cover charge at the Bear! The floor plan includes a large indoor area with lots of seating! There is a front Bar, back bar, and a bar upstairs! There is also a large patio area with seating and its own bar! So there is rarely a wait to get a drink! Upstairs can get very crowded because the dance floor is there. At times there will be a line to get inside the door, and a second line to get upstairs... so if you aren't looking for a crowd, be sure to be there early.
The decor is pretty spectacular! From local pictures to taxidermy horses and deer...
When visiting Chico, its a MUST!!! -
Review from john d.
As a business owner myself and a Chico Alumni I think that this will be the last time I visit "The Bear." It's unfortunate and breaks my heart that I may never return to this place where I became part of their very own renowned "Mug Club." In my opinion and as a business owner myself customers are first priority(behind employees) that make or break a business.
I will first say that the food okay and probably the only good thing that the Bear has going besides the history of it being a classic Chico Bar. I was holding off to write this review but wanted to voice my opinion because enough is enough, and I want to make them aware of what is going on internally. To make it clear the following comments are not the first time I've seen problems with the bear but it seems that it happens time and time again, and personally it makes me upset, so thanks to YELP here it is:
This last weekend my buddy's and I were visiting Madison Bear Garden for a weekend on the town. We were having good time just like the rest of the crowd and enjoying ourselves as we would be. The upstairs bouncer then approached my buddy(we'll call my buddy "JOE") and told him he had to leave. (after just arriving about 2 hour before hand) We looked at each other with a sigh thinking he was joking, but he wasn't. We then asked the young bouncer, "what was the problem?" He replied "the management said he looks too drunk, so he must leave." Being dumbfounded we said okay and proceeded downstairs because the younger bouncer said the manager whom made the observation was downstairs. We then were taken to the front door where Joe was escorted out, I was left in because I was totally fine and not intoxicated. (At least that's what they said, but the funny thing was that I had only 1 beer more than my friend and he had only had 4 up until that point of the night, over the course of 4 hours) The following is the conversation I had with the night bouncer Manager named Grant.
ME: The younger bouncer said you had made the call to kick my buddy out?
Grant: Yeah, he's too intoxicated.
Me: How can that be, we just got out on the town about 2 hours ago, and Joe hasn't done anything wrong?
Grant: If that's what the guy(younger bouncer) saw then that's it.
~The younger bouncer told us earlier that management(Grant) made the call. Grant didn't see my buddy do anything wrong but instigated his removal. As far as I'm concerned the younger bouncers are just told that if they see anyone that needs to leave then just tell them Management made the call just to get them out the door. By the way if it;s one thing I hate more than anything in business it's, LIARS. Lying to Customers is one of the top ways to lose business, even if it's about something miniscule.
Me: How is he intoxicated?
Grant: I don't know, if that's what they saw then that's what they saw.
Me: That makes no sense, because the bouncer upstairs said that the manger bouncer whom made the call was you, Grant.
~the young bouncer(YB) enter the conversation, this is where it takes a twist
Me: Young bouncer, why did my buddy have to leave?
YB: He was too intoxicated, I saw him trip walking up to the elevated area.
ME: When we got pushed by the crowd near the dance floor?
YB: I saw him trip, so that's it.
ME: So you made the call, not Grant?
~nothing was said after that and the YB left to back inside.
Me: Grant, so thats were your co-worker made an honest mistake. He mistaking didnt see my buddy get pushed so lets just call it a day a go back inside to see our friends.
Grant: (pulls out the famous safe card script) Hey man I just want this place to be safe because it's a liability for The Bear.
~I find that very interesting that he made that comment but kind of knew Grant was going to say that. So, just to make it aware IF The Bear wanted to "make it safe" then they should kick out about 50% to 70% of all people in the bar. On any average weekend it's more than apparent to anyone that most of the people at "The Bear" are over their limit however, the bar tenders can't get the drinks out fast enough.
Grant: Sorry man, I can't look at your friends eyes, they're all squinted and again he looks intoxicated.
~My buddy Joe has eye's that look like sylvester stallone, kind of like the droopy type. There's nothing Joe can do about it but in our opinion this could kind of be seen as discrimination by the Madison Bear Garden. But, again its unfortunate to see it happen like that.
At this point we just walked away and waited for the rest of our friends to come out so that we could just leave. This is where my party at The Bear ends. I've put up with their "pick and choose" attitude long enough. Especially when most if not all people I've seen get kicked have been Males, not Females.(again discrimination) If you'd like me to elaborate or tell you about other upsetting experience's please message.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I love the mug club that they have on Tuesday and Wednesday. You get to try a large selection of beers and eventually get the giant mug at the normal price. Tends to get pretty busy as it gets later and sometimes there is a large amount of bros. Couple of the bartenders suck but the majority are nice and take care of you. Also have some great food and chili cheese friends. Try the jiffy burger...it is awesome!

Hilarious, eclectic and kitschy interior... good burgers, tried the jiffy burger - which was surprisingly good... hated having to dig back into my pocket to come up with the 86 cents to cover my side of ranch... luckily, the ranch was tasty and worth the additional charge... hmmmmm, but the principle of it... icon of Chico that is worth checking out.

I change my mind, the Bear is going to downhill. Do you know they don't serve Veggie Patties after 10pm? Why? Are you suddenly not accepting of alternative diets after 10pm? Don't get me wrong, I understand closing down parts of the menu to save time and money, but it takes no extra money or effort to fry a veggie pattie than it does a meat pattie. In fact since Veggie patties are cheaper than meat patties why wouldn't you allow this? You could have made 6$ off me, instead you've lost my patronage. Also, whats up with that bartender who acts like its a chore to make you a drink when the bar is EMPTY. Dude, thats your job!

Chico, CA
Great bar with an interesting collection of decorations! The food isn't bad either. Try the Jiffy Burger (a peanut butter bacon cheeseburger) its amazing!!
The bar tenders and bouncers can be total dicks tho.
Crazy crowded on weekends, especially when Chico State is in session.
