This is a nice sandy beach which is pretty close to Arcata. It can be a nice drive through cow pastures (or bike ride....just be sure not to touch an electric fence--it will knock you on your a$$!).
At the beach there are some nice dunes to play around in, and then there is a loooooong beach to hang, walk, jog along. Some people have been known to have bonfires out here.
Many good memories on these sands.

Miles of Beach to Roam Before I Sleep
Mad River Beach is a county park so you can bring your dogs, horses, kids and even build a fire on the beach. This is a huge beach with sand dunes teaming with birds and miles of sand to run or explore. A good assortment of small rocks washes up on shore which made a fun addition to the sand castle we built. Parking lot was free and a bit of a hike through the dunes brought you to the large expanse of flat open sand. Since it's so open it can be quite windy at times, but certainly a roomy sand box to place to play or ponder.
Dog Friendly - Five paws for a huge dog friendly beach with lots of room to romp and play in the surf or chase a stick.
