Only really get to judge the furniture section as I don't need women clothes! Not this weekend anyway!:)
It's got a wide selection of recliners including power recliners which are these days excellent. They go back almost to flat and reminds of nice business class seats on a plane. Excellent place to relax.
Elsewhere the store is a smorgasbord of women's fashion. If you look hard enough theres bound to be something for everyone.
But going back to the furniture section - the seats are comfy and there are plenty of them!! Rest thy weary feet my friend. -

A very nice Macy's: modern, neat & clean, well organized, and has lots of stuff in stock.
I don't shop at Macy's very often, but here's a great tip for those of you who drive to Union Square and hate looking for parking: Macy's will validate your Union Square Parking Garage ticket for up to 3 hrs. Woohoo! No need to pay $$$ to park in a prime location! You're welcome :] -

Welcome to discountville, population me! I came to the sixth floor in hopes of finding new bedding. I've had the same boring bedding since my sophomore year in college, it was time for an upgrade.
I walked up to the first person I could find, his name was Raymund. I was like "Yo Raymund, I need some awesome, comfy, magnificent bedding, ASAP". Raymund was like "Hey Jason, let's get you set up", then I was all like "How do you know my name", and he was like "Macy's goes out of their way for customer service".
So, his name was Raymund, and some of that conversation didn't happen. Before I knew it we had found the perfect bedding set. All in it was going to cost around a thousand bucks. Yikes. I definitely went super aggressive and got all down pillows and comforter. We made it to the register and there was a 30-40% discount on everything I had purchased, JACKPOT BABY. On top of that I was randomly wearing a red shirt and Raymund said they had another fundraising discount for wearing read so I got an additional 20% off. I walked out of Macy's with a copious amount of comfy goodness for about $570.
...I'm going to take a nap now. -

my fiance received excellent service from Mary in the Womens dresses area. Mary helped locate the dress my fiance wanted, called the store that's out of state that had it, and assisted with the purchase and shipping questions.

We tried to buy a skirt but no one knew where to find it. Had to go to 3 different floors and all the sales people pointed us in wrong directions. Had comfy chairs though.

I'll keep it plain and simple, know what you want and get out as fast as you can. Or if you can, see if they have what you want somewhere else, usually that does the trick.
Not a big fan of Macy's, it just seems so cluttered, there's stuff everywhere, it's weird, like a mass confusion of hodge podge, like a magic trick that went totally wrong.
Although you do get a star for having a post office downstairs. -
Review from Emily V.
I was reminded this year just WHY I don't shop at Macy's.
I was given a Macy's gift certificate as an engagement gift with the instruction to buy myself "something inviting"
So, I headed to the lingere department.
Right off the bat, I wasn't impressed with the selection. Admittedly, I imagine they stock for their cutsomer base, but the combination of grannie bras and cheap offerings didn't really fit what I was looking for. I finally selected a gorgeous DKNY bra, grabbed it and headed to the changing room.
The bra which fit had a different sort of pricing tag on it, the kind you would see when an item had been returned. It also had a small tear in the strap. I asked the sales assistant if they had any others in my size and she didn't even look on the computer, she just told me that anything found on the clearance rack had no extra stock. I explained that it wasn't on the clearance rack, and asked her to please look on the computer. Turns out there were none left in stock, but she turned around and didn't even offer to sell me the (damaged) bra I wanted at a reduced price, she just refused to sell it to me. Why have something on the shop floor if you're going to refuse to sell it to someone?
As I went back to looking, a different sales assistant approached me and asked to help. I explained what I wanted and she said she would find me some bras to try on... and then turned around and started checking out other customers, as I stood there waiting.
I finally found my own bras and went to try them on, was eventually found by incompetant sales assistant 2 when she brought (read: threw at me) two bras which were clearly not at all what I was looking for.
If I hadn't had a gift certificate, I would have just left. I was faced by inferior product and neglegent and incompetant "assistance"
The absolute cherry on top of the whole experience was when the two sales assistants got in a fight IN FRONT OF ME over who would get the commission. In fact, incompetant sales assistant 2 actually won the argument, but then left me waiting (while incompetant sales assistant 1 stood aside watching, with nothing to do) while she checked out other customers ahead of me. As I was finally being checked out, 1 and 2 fought again over another customer's commission.
The whole experience was so shocking that I actually asked to speak with a manager (who mysteriously couldn't be found) and then wrote in a complaint about the service. It has been nearly two weeks since I wrote in and to date have received no response. Shocking. -

This is honestly probably one of the best Macy's I have ever been to. Why you ask? Let me tell you...
First of all...it's huge! Multiple floors filled with wares of every sort. Purses, jewelry, lingerie, housewares...where do we begin??? Actually...we began in the basement which is where the food court is. I loved the selection and the best part??? The digital soda fountain!!! Life does NOT get better then THIS! I swear my husband and I drank a ton of soda just so we could keep returning to the dispenser and try a new concoction. While at this Macy's you MUST make a stop and try it out. One disappointment...the food service area was NOT clean. There was food on the floor and wrappers strewn about. It was the end of the day and many counters were closing up shop (some early, I might add) but, I would still expect an establishment of this nature to clean.
Onward and upward we went...literally...browsing through the purses I found there to be a huge selection with the usual Macy's discounts. The customer service in this department was really exceptional. The staff was friendly, willing to help and the area was clean and well organized.
I also really liked the fact that this place was open later than most of the other stores in the area. I was so disappointed in how early everything else closed on a Saturday evening.
If you are on the hunt for something in particular or just want to shop a little later than the other stores afford you the opportunity to check out this Macy's. You won't be disappointed!
...and don't forget to check out the soda fountain! -

I haven't found anything decent at Macy's in fifteen years. I don't know why, but their mens section seems to be awesome while their women's section is lacking. I thought I'd be bound to find SOMETHING considering this Macy's location is monstrous. Wrong, just more mediocre clothes and a shoe section that is always a mess with shoes everywhere and no one willing to help you. When a girlfriend and I asked an employee if they carried Seychelles shoes, they looked at us with disgust that we bothered to ask and then walked away. Well guess what Macy's employee, you're definitely not better than Nordstrom and they're ok with carrying that brand. Also, you carry Jessica Simpson shoes for godsake.
They get two stars because I use their bathroom whenever I'm shopping in the area (including a Dyson Airblade dryer!) and they have adoptable cats in the window at Christmas time. Also, there's a super secret post office downstairs. -
Review from Julia W.
Macy*s has changed a lot in the last few years but you can't hate on this location.
The former "Macy*s West" flagship store is still as impressive. I had never seen this store in person when I was employed at the Macy*s NW HQ but had heard a lot about it.
My husband & I came to SF during December and Union Square (and Macy*s) was completely done up in lights and wreaths. It was quite impressive to view at night.
They also had a ton of food and shops inside the store itself (Cheesecake Factory, Starbucks, etc.)
We did a little bit of Christmas shopping and the store seemed to run on endlessly from one department to the next.
The only small complaint I had was the elevators were kind of spread out (one large bay in the middle/back of store and then one single elevator that was at the front). They also had Salvation Army out front doing a huge celebration of some kind that had 5+ people ringing their bells in unison at you. Not a fan of having to duck and dodge people as I try to get into the store. -

Well, it's Macy's. Delightfully overwhelming for a Macy's. Walk in from one entrance, and you will be greeted with a bombarding amount of perfume samples. Walk in from another entrance, and you will be in Makeup Heaven. Walk in from another, ... and so on and so forth.
The shoe section. Searched high and low for uggs (after staring at them year after year, and telling myself it's NOT that worth it for sheepskin, etc etc etc etc), and they were no where to be found. My friend, who works at Macy's assured me I would NOT find them here... really, I didn't know Macy's didn't carry uggs. They sell "Bearpaw"... $69.99 (ONE DAY SALE!!) , is that good? Is that real sheep skin and sheep fur? -

I just like, don't like all the drama that comes with being a girl. I don't want $300 jeans or 90 pairs of shoes. I don't want a new purse every 4 weeks or jewelry or fancy make up. I'm just not into it.
GOT YA!
I love being dramatic! And I love my shoes!!! And I love my Macy's Gold Card and coupons and giftcards and one-day sales and jeans that make my butt look better than my boyfriend's sweatpants do... And French Connection sweaters that are 40% off! Available dressing rooms and attendants who are willing to help me shop, a gift card that allows me to shop a little less guilt-strickenly, an entire floor of shoes, the aroma of the perfume counter and the hustle and bustle in the air that comes in November and December.
We are living in a material world, and I am a material girl. Macy's, I love you.Listed in: Woohoo! As good as it gets!, Shoptimist!, Me time

Dear Mrs. Macy's,
Why are you such a mess? You have clothes in the allover the floor, random trash everywhere, and really long lines. You have gone downhill. When I was a little kid, I thought you were ahead of the game. Now, well...let's just say you still carry Apple Bottoms. Didn't that brand go bankrupt along with Nelly's career? Also, what's up with your return policy? I get it, you are Nordstrom's not-so-attractive, underachiever step-sister. I mean, if you are going to attempt to copy Norstrom's, at least get rid of the pathetic 30 day return policy. I mean, all of your clothes are three seasons late anyway. I suggest you get a major face-lift. Maybe hire more workers and teach several people to clean up a bit. It's not cute seeing multiple soda cups sitting on your main display and a half eaten Mrs. Field's cookie on your woman's shoe section front display. I agree with some of the other comments, there are messy racks everywhere. Last, you really need to think about hiring better buyers for your company. I feel like I'm shopping at Coldwater Creek.
Love Always,
Jackie
+1 because you have an amazing kitchen and bedding section (I can at least give you that) -

Why do I bother coming here?
I hate Macy's customer service, it's the worst I've ever experienced. This location is a bigger version of the same old story. Trying to return something to this location is more than a pain, it borders on impossible. The staff never knows what they are doing or seem to have any interest in helping you. Plus you have to deal with all of the union square crowds, which are especially crazy during the holiday season.
Basically I hate this place. -

I don't really like Macy's, but I like this Macy's because of their large selection. I come here pretty much exclusively for their contemporary clothing on the third floor and the shoe section. Their basement level with the home goods is also very good. The sales here are often much better than other department stores, so if you can find the item here, it is usually a better price. They also turnover their items rather quickly. However, because so many people go through Macy's, sizes can be limited. Although the selection of contemporary clothing has definitely increased over the years, the quality of the lines they've been stocking recently has declined dramatically. That seems to be true of most retailers these days.
Macy's in general also has great customer service. They have price scanners located in every department, the employees don't seem annoyed when you want to return something, and even if there are lines, it's so big that it doesn't feel crowded and you can easily pay for your items on another floor. -

Old habits die hard. Such as my need to drive places that are in walking distance. Or shopping at the rinky-dink Macy's in Stonestown.
Last night I went the opposite direction and hopped on the 38 to Macy's in an attempt to return clothes I bought online. It's stupid for me to believe I am capable of returning anything, because I always end up finding $200 worth of clothes to trade in for my $100 worth of returns. It's like some primitive gatherer instinct takes over and I refuse to leave until I find something- ANYthing- worth buying.
In any case, last night was no exception and I spent hours scouring two sprawling floors of womens clothing. I used to hate this Macy's because of the tourists and crowds, but I learned the trick is to come on a weeknight and never on a Saturday afternoon. There is so much clothing here, I can't believe I have ever wasted time picking through the pitiful selection at every other mall.
PS: 3D mirrors inside every dressing room! :-D -

The clearance racks are good to me. Jeans for $15? Three cute sweaters for $13-19? My favorite necklace for $8? I'm sold.
The last time I was in, a Macy's card promotion was going on - an additional 15% off your entire purchase if you used your Macy's card. I don't have one, and the gal gave me the discount anyway. You, madam, are the wind beneath my wings. -

This review is for the lingerie dept. at Macy's downtown.
So.....there are thousands of bras here, literally wall-to-wall bra-dom, yet I found exactly 3, yes THREE bras that fit a 32A. And none with matching panties. None. I searched the entire store looking for panties to match, clutching the one bra I found that didn't have couch cushions built into it (because apparently if you are petite you are not only deprived of being able to wear a bra, but if you do happen to find one, you must need gigantic padding, because well, your little boobs aren't good enough on their own.)
This is so insulting, and it isn't the first time this has happened. I am resentful that a store this huge cannot order a larger variety of small sized bras from the brands that make them.
With the large population of Asians and Latinas (a lot of petite ladies here) in my city I can't possibly be the only one getting dissed.
F**k you Macy's for insinuating that I am not important or female enough because I am tiny, and therefore should walk around bra-less. -

This is a review for the fine jewelry department. Sally is awesome! She was really patient and pleasant. Sadly, when we went back to purchase the diamond earrings, she was away for the moment. But I wanted to give her credit where it's due! Ask for her - you can't go wrong.

I've been here several times, so here's a run down of why I'm a fan...
- they have the largest in-store selection compared to any other Macy's I've been to
- they're home to Burger Bar, Starbucks, and The Cheesecake Factory
- the view from any of the windows overlooking Union Square is spectacular (especially at night!)
- it's within walking distance from BART/Muni -

This is solely for the maintenance of the Timothy Pflueger designed 6th floor ladies room at Macy's.
As some may know he was one of the more important architect and designer in the first part of the 20th Century San Francisco.
This ladies room was design by him, everything is exquisite including the vanities, marble, gold leafed ceiling, silver backed mirror however it is sad to see the poor maintenance carried out by Macy's on something on could call a landmark.
There are cheap plastic paper tissue and soap dispensers mounted around the vanities and plain stainless steel trash cans. The original "vacant" signs at the door has been replaced by cheap and un-aestetic "PUSH" signs.
Shame on you Macy's. -

I enjoy shopping at Macys. However, I had the worst customer service at LANCOME counter at Macys. Sales assistant (HER NAME IS ALLA- she might from Eastern Europe, based on her accent) refused to help me and said go to another Lancome counter because she is too tired and busy. She said, she has been working since 7:30am and when I told her about bad attitude and worst customer service she had........she called the security with no reason.
I went to another counter and called the manager (Jennifer) and she apologized what just happened. Macys, why do you hire someone....................
- who refuse to serve customer
- complains her work shift
- lazy
- not friendly
- no work etiquette
- sounded annoyed

The women's shoe department is huge! The jewelry department is something else too - considering this is a 'chain' store. This particular Macy's is just huge all around. Long gone from the neighborhood are old time favorites like I Magnin, City of Paris, and Joseph Magnin.
This Macy's has grown and expanded from what it used to be when I used to walk up here, shop, and dash back to work in the financial district years ago. Like I said, the shoe department is something else - I feel like a kid in a candy store; it is so expansive - dizzying displays of shoes/boots/sandals. Every imaginable shoe you could possibly want is here. Well, almost.
Definitely worth a visit (but not during the holidays when its horrible, hot, and over crowded). -

What's not to love? Everything under one roof, reminiscent of old department stores of days gone by... I love spending an afternoon at Macys.
There truly is stuff for every budget. I just purchased the most amazing dress (originally $190) and shoes (originally $70) to where to an upcoming party, and with all the labor days sales the outfit cost me... a whopping $46! For a stunning dress and shoes!
I love the Christmas windows, the energy of the store and all the nooks and crannies. -

I don't know if it is just because I don't shop at Macy's much or they just have really bad clothing for young teens and even people my age (that is early 20s). Out of all the levels...the only good thing about this place is probably their shoe department. I always use my Macy's card and get 20% with a coupon. The good thing with the coupon is that you can find SOME of the same stuff at Nordstrom (Shoes) or Urban outfitters (Levi's Jeans) at Macy's save a little more money.
This place is good for older women because there are lots of clearance stuff that don't look so bad. I like their Impulse department but everything is too pricey that I just can't afford it. They have nice displays and I like the busy-ness of the store.
Not sure about this place, I like Nordstrom better.
***IF you have a platinum Macy's Card, park in the O'Farrel parking lot and get it validated for 3 hours worth of free parking! Get it validated on Macy's 6th floor. -

The store is huge and generally clean. Macy's in general is a little pricey for my tastes and they rarely have anything I want.
Sorry I can't be more helpful with the shopping. It's a chain store, so they generally carry all the same brands.
Plus, most of the time when I visit this location, it's for the restrooms of a quick snack in their "food court." Speaking of the restrooms, over the years they have gone downhill. They used to be pretty clean, but over the last couple years this distinct urine funk seems to linger in the hallway to the restrooms. If I can make it, I just use the much cleaner restrooms in Nordstrom over on Market. -

Today, July 2nd 2011 @ 11:45 am, I approached the MAC cosmetic counter to find two young girls standing around. I approached one (dark skin (filipino maybe?), black hair with blonde streaks, with teal eyeshadow) to help me with lashes. She showed me where they were and then as I was deciding she asked if she could help another customer who was looking around. I said I've already chosen what I want and I need you to help put them on (which should only take about 5 minutes) and that I'm on lunch break so I do need to be fast. She said "Well, I'm the only person here and I do need to help other people in the meantime, so if you dont mind waiting." I said, "I'm in a time constraint and if you can help me first that will be great." She said, "But I need to help other clients."
I ended up not purchasing anything because she was not accomodating to my needs nor was she willing to assist me as a customer. I'm still a customer and service should be given. Very disappointed in MAC because usually service is always good. NEVER again will I buy from this counter again! Where is the training of these people?!?! I work in a high end retail establishment and as much trouble and demanding a client would be, you always need to accomodate them. DISAPPOINTED! -

I come to this location to browse with my dog on bad weather days. I do not come here to shop. The selection in my opinion is geared towards international visitors who think a $120 t-shirt is a steal.
The dressing room was a mess when I visited. It was obvious that Macy's has cut down on staff hours due to the economy.
If I need to get my serious shopping on, I prefer to haul it over to the Pleasanton Macy's where I find most things that are still selling for full price in Union Square marked down 40% in Pleasanton. -

Macy's is required by California law to sell furniture with flame retardants that can cause cancer, sterility, thyroid disorders, endocrine disruption, reduced IQ in children, developmental impairment, birth defects, etc., even at very low doses. Like PCBs, these chemicals live a long time and accumulate at the top end of the food chain, i.e. us.
You can tell furniture has these chemicals if the label says it meets the California furniture flammability standard. Technical Bulletin 117 (TB117).
Why don't I have the right to buy a sofa without carcinogens? These chemicals don't even work! Fire deaths in states WITHOUT flame retardants declined at the same rate as California over 24 years
560 Americans died in furniture caused fires in 2003, but cancer killed more than 500,000 people. I bet these people would have died anyhow, because these carcinogenic chemicals only delay the onset of fire for 12 seconds. And hello! Iin Europe cigarettes must go out if not puffed on, why not force cigarette makers to do the same in America rather than make the 80% of us who don't smoke in California, live with furniture full of toxic chemicals, that eventually will be released to the environment to do damage to wildlife as well?
You want to know why? It's bdue to 3 aggressive chemical companies, Albermarle, Chemtura, and Israeli Chemicals Ltd, who spend millions of dollars lobbying the California state legislature.
I don't think citizens or one-time-only newspaper articles about this topic have a chance in hell of defeating chemical lobbyists who've spent well over 10 million dollars defeating legislation to overturn the flame retardants in furniture requirement.
But if everyone tells chain stores they won't buy furniture with flame retardants and orders it from out of state, then Macy's, Ikea, Pottery Barn, Costco, Crate and Barrel, La-Z-Boy, JCPenney, Restoration Hardware, Z Gallerie, and so on will lose money. We need to find corporations to fight the chemical industry, because only another large corporation has the money, clout, money, know-how, and money to counteract the chemical industry lobbyists. At this point, given the high level of corruption across all institutions, all we can hope for is to set one corporation against another.
That these retardants have been in furniture since 1980 and scientists like Arlene Blum have been unable to get them despite many years of effort, is a perfect example of the corruption of our political system.
This is not wacky pseudo-science - articles have appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, and many other papers, here are just a few examples:
Arlene Blum. 19 Nov 2006. Chemical Burns. The New York Times.
14 Nov 2009. Profiles in Later Life. Taking on Mountains--and Toxic Chemicals. Wall Street Journal.
Arlene Blum, 28 Apr 2011. Viewpoints: Flame retardants are the asbestos of our time. Sacramento Bee.
Arlene Blum. 17 Oct 2008. Midnight's Legacy. Los Angeles Times.
28 Oct 2010. Seeing Risks Exceed Benefits, Scientists Seek Limits On Flame Retardants. InsideEPA dot com
This is hard science, there are over 100 papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals (see the publications lists at greensciencepolicy dot org
Greensciencepolicy is fighting to get these chemicals out of our furniture and has the following board members
* Lauren Heine, Ph.D., Senior Science Advisor, Clean Production Action, Lauren Heine Group LLC
* Don Kennedy, Ph.D., President Emeritus of Stanford University, former editor-in-chief of Science magazine and former FDA Commissioner
* Richard Luthy, Ph.D., Silas H. Palmer Professor and Department Chair, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Stanford University

I love this Macy's!!!!! It's not as big as the one at Herald Square in NYC but it's also A LOT less crowded. The Macy's in SF is 7 stories including the basement, but the top story is just for restaurants including Cheesecake Factory.
The shoe selection here is very good and their dress selection is also very good. This Macy's has great variety with clothing at various price points.
It's right next to Union Square and near lots of public transportation. -
