Mac's is a wonderful bookstore in Coventry.  I was going to write that it's a wonderful "little" bookstore, but it's actually not that little.  OK, well maybe it is.  But actually, it's not.  It's got the perfect combination of being cozy and cavernous--as in being meandering and multi-leveled like a cave--and they actually have a poetry section.

I don't think I bought too much stuff from here, but I was a lowly volunteer at the time, and what was lacking in actual financial support was made up for in the hours I spent browsing the used paperbacks, strange history books, and chapbooks.  Yes, they have chapbooks.

This used bookstore is awesome. In particular, I loved the magazine selection they had. After looking at the selection, I had about 4 different magazines that I haven't seen at any other bookstore ready to buy them, each with different topics I had never heard of. Every neighborhood should have a great bookstore like this and I'll definitely return if I ever get a chance to come back in the future.

Mac's Backs is my favorite bookstore in Cleveland, no doubt about it.  You can always find something fascinating.  On my final trip, I found a first edition of Ntozake Shange's Sassafrass, as well as a book of Talmud commentary in Hebrew from 1922.  The Talmud commentary is one of the loveliest books I've ever seen, and it only cost $5.  There literally is something for everyone there.  I never come away empty-handed, but can get lots of great books and avoid overspending.

I recommend subscribing to Mac's email newsletters to keep up with bookstore events.

I heart this place...been to bigger spots, been to better organized spots, but I will always walk out of this joint with a few books and only a few dollars short in my pocket.

Obscure sci-fi stuff? They have it. Those novels you couldn't be bothered to read in high school? They have it. Wacky crap you can't believe anyone ever noticed, much less wrote a book about it? They have it. Sure, tall folks (like me) will have to hunchback-it a bit downstairs, but its worth it. I get annoyed when locals get down on places like this...I've been to several other, bigger cities, and with few exceptions none have anything like this. Savor it.

I went to this cute little old bookstore last night with a handful of friends, and I absolutely loved it.  Selling used and new books alike, I was surprised with the somewhat limited-spacing store had to offer.  The woman that worked there was very friendly, and a creepy old guy hanging out by the door was as knowledgeable as the bookstore's database.  I kept asking the worker who authored some book I had in mind, and he knew them all.  Thanks, creepy old guy!

What a great place! I love indie bookstores. Heck, I love all bookstores, but I really dig the independent stores. Probably because I wish I had the nerve to open one up.

Mac's Backs is a classic independent bookstore. I moved up here about 3 months ago and during that time the store has been widely reputed to be something akin to the indie bookstore headquarters of Cuyahoga County.

The store itself is cool, spanning 3 floors, well-organized, and flush with high-quality poetry and prose by local authors and artists. Most importantly, the owner Suzanne is incredibly delightful and kind. Although Visible Voice strikes me as better organized store with and a somewhat superior selection of books, there is a beautiful energy at Mac's that isn't duplicated by Visible Voice or any other store in town. Suzanne is also an enthusiastic supporter of the literary scene in Cleveland, and has organized and hosted events large and small that keep the community as robust as it is.

Go there, buy stuff. Everyone wins.

This is another one of those stores, like Big Fun, that I get down on my knees every day and thank the universe that it's here. What a great book shop to get lost browsing in. A big alternative literature and periodical selection. They'll help you find anything you're looking for.
