We've meet for quiet sometimes now.  Your modern decor absolutely kept my interests everytime I pass by you. I truly believe we will finally meet one day

That day has come and I was excited. It was a one of the true great first "date". You impressed me with what you can offer. which was more than I could ask for.

I didn't wait was a great start.  Everything I ordered came out perfect, delicious.

I'm glad we finally met and now I like you even more !!

Great place for tapas, satisfying, good portions, LONG WAIT ( was told 20 minutes, waited 1 hr at the bar, didn't leave because the food looked so good).

First off, you need to come and try the drinks here. They're simply amazing and surprising when you discover the exotic/latin elements like avocado, jalapenos, and corn that are incorporated into cocktails. Don't be afraid, it's actually pretty good! If you love berries and mint, go for the acai cocktail (sort of like a mojito).

As for the food I think they're a great portion, 2-3 per person and the whole table should be satisfied. We ordered the arepa with quail, manchego, spinach and fig. It was so full of flavor and there was a smoky mole sauce on top that added a kick. Next, roasted shrimps and mashed green plantain. This was really spicy but the plantain mash was so good, the sauce really made it taste a bit like meat. We had to ask again if there was meat, a great dish for vegetarians!
We also had salmon avocado civeche that was really great and onion rings. Almost every table had a plate of these, and I can see why. For $9, the portion is great for an appetizer. It's sweet, savory and spicy.
If you're into  sweet, savory spicy dishes, then definitely come here. It's worth the wait and the wallet.

Had yet another fun and standout meal. Lots of little dishes to explore and a wonderful wines list as well. The yuca fries are like so many things on the menu, simple and perfectly prepared.

I visited Macondo recently for a friend's birthday with a group of around 10 people.  Wait, I guess I should preface this review by saying that I hate when food is brought out intermittently throughout the "dining experience."  For some reason, everything I ordered came out before everyone else received anything. I refused to eat!  It's like cheating on your significant other in front of their face!

So, by the time plates began to appear around the table, my food was cold.  However, and I'm not sure why/how, the calamari was amazing!  Seriously!  The perfect blend of sweet and spicy.  I don't think anything on the menu wasn't tasty.

If you're in the mood for a raucous, drunken, tapas evening, then this is your place.  If you're looking for a romantic evening culminating in a "you bought me the best dinner that I've ever had blowie," then keep it moving.

Iffy service doesn't usually bother me this much. But our food was brought out separately, I wasn't about to eat my food before my dining companions got their dishes so I sat there waiting, kind of weird. Waiters were not always present, we received our menus and waited a long time before someone came to get our orders.

Shame too because the space is awesome and the food is really good. It's a great concept for a restaurant, Latin street food, what's not to love? They really just have to work on service. But anyway, so I came here for brunch after hitting up the Dumpling Festival on a rainy day near by and finding it utterly crowded.

We sat on a long table with really comfortable couch that have arm rests that you can put up or down like in a movie theater.

The Mayan hot chocolate was amazingly rich. Except you need to use a spoon to drink it. The consistency is like pudding, so rich and dense, it was really good. It was also an option for complimentary drink with any brunch entree.

I'm glad I didn't order a huge plate, I had the salmon ceviche which was served in a martini glass and a side of patatas bravas because what is better than patatas bravas? The ceviche was really tasty and good, zesty. The patatas bravas were pretty good, slightly dry, our waitress had asked me if I wanted an extra side of the sauce and I should have said yes to her. Would have been better. But overall it was pretty good.

We ordered the churros which come with a little teacup of the Mayan hot chocolate for dipping. Very good and amazingly sugary.

One of my dining companions ordered the pancakes and said it was literally the best pancakes she ever had in her life. She also repeated this several times as she was eating.

They have an impressive cocktail list, very unique drinks with different fruits and combinations. They also have what is called a "porron" which is a sort of wine decanter but with an extra beak you use to pour the wine straight into your mouth (no wine glasses needed!). And I guess during their weekly happy hour you get a free mini porron with any tapas you order at the bar. Coolness.

I wanna come back and try this. Saw Anthony Bourdain do it on his No Reservations show in Spain. Looks cool. Great place for drinks with a friend, date or with a big group! They only lose stars to service!

muy bien! las comidas era muy delicoso.

okay, i've walked past this joint a few times on my way to mercury lounge for a show.  it's always bumping with overflow of folks on the sidewalk smoking and posing.  upon heading in on a tuesday night, it was tame and the staff were uber friendly.  i was early for a bday dinner.  i had a beer - presidente from the DR. a light lager.

i find tapas places leaving me unfulfilled and hungry, not at macondo.  we ordered all the rellanos:
- mushie croquettes
- yucca balls
- yucca with ground meat
- crepe of cheese and truffle sauce

we also got the eggplant bocadillo (sammy) for our veggie pals.  i didn't have any b/c i'm not a fan of the eggplant.   the sammy came with the yucca fries which are excellent.  i will getting a side of those the next time i come by.

we were a party of 7 and had a split of $45 each including drinks and dessert.  we got the chocolate cake for the bday gal and the servers was great about doing the whole candle bit.

as for drinks, I already mentioned the presidente.  i also had teh xingu, which was as dark brazilian beer.  the lightest dark beer i've had.  we shared a  carafe of white sangria which was disappointing because it wasn't strong enough for our liking.  more watered down than actual punch. the zanahoria + gin was just right.  an infusion of gin, carrot juice, lime juice, pineapple juice, agave and combier (triple sec).

i was a little annoyed by the hourly colored light change, but the food and drink more than make up for the nuisance.

A tribute to Latin American "street food." Upscale eating with a downtown vibe. Great seating options - counter, bar, booths in the back. Everythnig is near the open kitchen and food comes as its ready. Tapas-style ordering. EVERYTHING was great. There is one thing you MUST GET.....calamari. Hands down the best I've ever had. I don't know how this works but they do a crispy outside, tender inside and with a sweet glaze. Do ask, just order.

Also this place has a nice smattering of vegetarian options and cool cocktails.

Met up here with a group of friends for Sunday brunch.  At 11:45am when we arrived, I think we were the only customers in the restaurant.  I'm a tourist, so I don't know, but is that too early for brunch in NYC?  (The place was just starting to fill up when we left around 1pm.)

Six of us, seated around a long rectangular table in cushioned sofa-like chairs with arm rests.  Nice.  Started out with a round of Mayan hot chocolate (complimentary with a brunch entree, or subsitute for OJ, mimosa, coffea/tea, or Bloody Mary)..  It was decent, though not as great as the spicy hot chocolate I make at home.  (I'm not biased...)

Pretty much the whole reason I wanted to go here was because I saw churros on the menu.  These didn't disappoint.  A plate of churros ($8) turned out to be five warm, sugared, crispy, delicious churros, with a side of hot chocolate to dip them in.  The only problem was that they were mini-churros, maybe four or five inches long.  So we ordered another round.  Problem solved.

For an entree, I went with huevos rancheros.  Served with round coins of chorizo.  Very artfully presented.  Pretty good.  My friends' dishes all seemed good, esp. the Benedict Colombiano.  The entrees on the whole were quite affordable, averaging $12.

I liked Macondo's interior and especially the comfortable long group tables.  Nothing about the place was really outstanding, but nothing was unsatisfying either.  Overall, a decent neighborhood brunch option.

Walked in on a busy Saturday night and our party was seated before we could even get a glass of wine and take in the scene. Although after an hour or so, I still don't think I "got" the decor.

I'm pretty sure we had one of everything. The yuca fries sounded amazing but were a bit bland and not the texturally exciting experience I had been anticipating.

I'm with you @Mark S., food in cocktail glasses weirds me out and feels a bit tacky, plus I get all worried about one false move of a fork and the glass gets chipped but no one notices...

I'd maybe go back and split the mini Cuban-style sandwiches and a bottle of wine sometime, and try to figure out what they're saying with the interior design.

The idea of this bar seems like a great one - a bar with street-side seating serving Latin drinks and tapas.  And I think this every time I walk by...

But every time I indulge my temptation, it sadly falls short.  I want to have a good time like everyone else there, but this has never happened for me.  My experiences with the food and drinks have been just okay.

Perhaps, the person reading this review will have a blast, but that hasn't happened for me yet at Macondo.  Or maybe I am just not trying hard enough?

On a hot summer Saturday, a few friends and I decided to stop by Macondo for a drink as we were walking past it. We sat at the bar and ordered drinks. Since we had just come from brunch we opted not to order anything. But I have to say the menu looked good. The drinks here were rather good we each ordered one of the many drinks frmo their cocktail menu. I had the sangria which was light and refreshing and my two friends ordered the Pisco.

I've been meanind to come back and trying their food. Maybe I should bookmark my own review haha.

I've passed by Macondo many times before and always thought that it looked like an interesting place. But it wasn't until a couple weeks ago that I had the opportunity to actually eat here albeit by a unfortunate turn of events at Rayuela.

Maconodo reminds me of a cross between a South American bar and a jungle gym. There are nets and vines, crates and cans strewn about the place so even if the conversation at your table is lousy, there's plenty of eye candy to glance over while sipping your avocado margarita. However, I found that during our meal, I was so caught up in the decor, that I hardly paid attention to any of my food. But maybe that was good thing as I found most of our entrees to be less spectacular than I had hoped for. I'm not sure what it was, but something about the food itself was just very mediocre. It seemed to be yet another case of style (great presentation!) over substance (blah food). In this way it sort of reminded me of my dinner at Double Crown earlier this summer.

Our cocktails however, were fantastic. Which leads me to believe that if I were to come here again it'd be for drinks and maybe some light appetizers but I'd fore go a substantial meal because the "South American Street Food" that they serve here is better left to other ventures in the city. Overall, an interesting spot-that's probably ideal for happy hour and not for food, but still worth checking out.

First off... our waiter was tripping balls, I'm almost certain of it. He was either rolling on e, had a syrette of morphine in his thigh, or just smoked a pound of weed before coming in. It was kinda awesome... and awkward.

The food was rather mediocre, nothing was quite as flavorful as I'd like or expect it to be. Nothing was bad mind you, just didn't have anything worth remembering. Also the decor made me feel like I was in an Epcot Center restaurant. It had the feel of theme park or some place perfect for a kitschy bachelorette party.

Needed a quick dinner before goin to some music in Prospect Park. Macondo is conveniently 25 fe little bar on the street and had a little cuban sandwich, mofongo with shriet from the F train.
We sat at themp, sweetbreads and fried yuca and some arros con pollo.
Everything was pretty good, but on the salty side. It's never super packed here so it is good for a quick stop. Definitely better tapas, but if you are in a rush come here.
BTW I wouldn't call this traditional spanish tapas. More like latin tapas. They have a mix of different latin foods.

They have an open kitchen here and I was watching a chef ladling sauce into a pan on the stove.  He was working quick and stumbled and dropped the ladle on the ground, looked around to see if anyone was looking, and then put the ladle back into the saucepan.

It looked delicious.

As with many restaurants in NYC, a promising restaurant could quickly go downhill. Each Macondo visit was worse than the last one. I suppose there is no point talking about good experiences in the past and my review should focus on my latest visits. Service was inconsistent - the girls who sat beside us well after we had ordered our two dishes got their 4 dishes way ahead of us. We must have waited for more than 30 minutes for our pernil tacos to arrive and a whole lot longer for the arroz con pollo. How could that have happened?

The food was okay but only if you know how to order. We must have gotten the two best dishes of the restaurant. The other food our neighbors ordered looked so sub-standard, I would have rather eaten at San Loco. The patatas bravas that the girls who sat beside us ordered was so lackluster - they looked like they were cooked in the microwave and dressed with a congealed orange sauce. Far from the tasty patatas bravas you would have in say Mercat. The other stuff that were ordered looked a lot more unappetizing.

To be fair, Macondo was not this bad in the past. The menu has shrunk and worsened over the year or two that they've been open. I mean something must have changed - maybe the economy? If they are trying to skimp on costs, it unfortunately shows.

Lastly, the final straw was that we saw one of the cooks return a dirty ladle that he dropped on the open kitchen floor back to his sauce container. If you can overlook this lack of hygiene, Macondo is an okay place where you can have a couple of drinks and something small to munch on. The Poronos are fun novelty worth a try if you are around the LES.

Not sure what all the hype is.

First the decor: I'm not sure what kind of look they're going for here. From outside it looks like some Donkey Kong jungle safari and the front part of the inside is trying to be some all uber hip lounge.  But then you get to the back and there's ivy on the walls as if it were some cheap high school production of Shakespeare.

The food was oily and not that awesome.  Not horrible, not bad, but not great. Definitely not worth the price though.

As per the "perron" carafe thing that allows you to pour the drinks in people's mouths... it kinda makes the place into like some spring break party (and not in a good way).

This seems to be a place more for bachelorette parties than a date spot or a foodie spot.  The front of the restaurant should just have sign that reads "White Hummer Limo Parking Only."

I left this place with a smile on my face. I was here on a Friday night with a group of about 10. We had a reservation, and had to wait a bit, but nothing ridiculous. The staff was uber friendly, from the waiters to the manager. Dealing with a large group can be a daunting task, but they handled it with perfection.

We were a bit unfamiliar with some of the items on the menu and our waiter was patient, courteous and carefully explained each of the items. I also had this phenomenal jalepeno cocktail. I don't remember the name of it, and it sounds a bit alarming, but I've never tasted anything so good. All around it was a great experience and it's a fun, loud atmosphere.

I've been meaning to get back to Macando for some time so as to try out their dinner menu w/ some friends. This particular time was an impromptu visit after a few failed attempts at other packed establishments. I took a seat at one of the four bar stools that are off the street, which personally I think are some of the best seats in the house as they provide you with a view of the entire place. Started (and finished) with some Estrella Damm beer, which was pretty damn good (pun intended). Not being too hungry, nor realizing their plates (at least those that I tried) were on the smaller side, I chose to get just the Pernil Pork Tacos. I was a little nonplussed when they arrived as it was a big white plate and these two little soft corn tortilla filled tacos. Where's the rice? Where are the beans? In Macondo's defense, the menu didn't say the tacos were accompanied by anything, but for $10 I guess I would have just assumed. But maybe it's just that I'm used to Southwest Mexican food where you can get enough Mexican food (beans and rice included) to feed a family of four for $10. Either way, the tacos were quite tasty and I thought about ordering two more, but instead opted for the Vieras Con Toronja Ceviche (bay scallops). For this particular ceviche, I guess I was expecting some side chips, or anything to spoon the ceviche on to. But alas it came in a martini sized* glass and with a spoon, however I didn't hold back and dove right in. Similar to the tacos, the ceviche proved to be very tasty.

Overall, I would say that the food at Macondo is tasty, the restaurant is quite energetic and the outdoor bar seats are fun. But alas the prices were a little high while the dishes a little small.

*I don't know how I feel about foods, particularly liquid based foods, being served in drinking-like glasses. I fortunately caught myself in time on at least half a dozen instances of reaching out to grab the martini glass and pour down the few remaining ruminants of ceviche juice. Wait, maybe that wouldn't have been so bad...

My favorite restaurant in New York.  Super friendly, warm, fun staff, great location for fresh air and people watching, and amazing food.  I had huevos rancheros there for brunch last week and didn't know eggs, salsa, and tortillas could taste sooo good!  It came with a free Aztec hot chocolate, when mixed with a shot of espresso, was probably better than any coffee I'd had in NYC.

Their drinks are top-notch.  It might not sound great, but I had an avacado/honey blended drink that I am currently craving at 10:30am on Monday as I write this.(....does this mean I'm an alcoholic?)

Went there in a group of 4 on a busy Friday night without a reservation, and they were very accomodating to get us a table.  When we were seated. we got the best assortment of tapas I've ever had.  So fresh, so light, but still filling.  The best was a tomato/shrimp/sausage dish.

One of the most unique things about this restuarant is that the bathrooms have chaulkboards for walls and graffiti is encouraged.

I had brunch here this past weekend with a few friends and I was so pleasantly surprised by everything from the food to the service to the decor.

Four of us went on a Saturday at about 1pm and there were plenty of tables open. We sat at one of the tables with barstools at the front overlooking the street through the large front window that was open. The lighting, the music, and the decor all supported a nice casual afternoon dining experience.

We were promptly served by a nice waiter and our food came out in a decent amount of time. I had the Chilaquiles and it was delicious! An entree and a glass of fresh OJ for $13 is not bad at all, especially for the LES. My friends ordered the skirt steak with yuca fries (kind of small), chimichirri chico (delicious), and the omelet with chorizo and home fries (delicious). We were all happy with our brunch.

I will definitely come back here again. I'm know that it's always packed for drinks and dinner, but people are missing out on the brunch aspect!

Came here in a large group of hungry, bachelorette-invigorated women. I was forced to employ the elbowing techniques I learned from the jerkoff on the plane ride over to make sure I got a bite of every tapa we ordered.
Cocktails had jalapeno in them, and I mean this in the best way possible.
Manager introduced himself, checked on our progress, acted like wearing a tiara out of tiny pink penises was run o' the mill.
Thanks for making us feel welcome and feeding us well. If you open one in LA I will work for food.

Macondo is named after the mythical village in Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "100 Years of Solitude." That means its name has something in common with its service, which is so bad it may as well exist only in myth.

I'd been once before with a group of three. The wait, which we were told would be about 30 minutes, ended up being more like an hour. The waitress was on auto-pilot and pushed us into over-ordering. But the food was interesting and good enough to make a second trip, which we attempted last night.

We showed up around 9pm with a group of five. The hostess assured us we'd be seated in about 30 minutes. We grabbed some (weak, watery, and overpriced) drinks and nuzzled into a corner of the crowded waiting area.

An hour and a half later we left the restaurant in disgust, still starving and mad as hell after being lied to for the previous hour.

Round about minute 30 of our epic wait, the hostess told us that our table was nearly ready -- the group had paid the bill and was about to leave. If you end up going and hear this excuse, DO NOT BELIEVE IT. Over the next sixty minutes, we received some form of this excuse over and over again:

"They just finished dessert."
"They put on their coats and stood up to leave, but then sat back down. Any minute now."
"The manager is over there talking to them now, urging them to hurry it up."
"I'm handling this personally" (this one from the manager).

We were too gullible and ate up the lies for a full hour, bringing our total wait time to 90 minutes. Worse still: We had at some point snagged a few stools in a corner of the waiting area, so that at least everyone could sit. Round about minute 45 of our Odyssey, a server came over, and ASKED MY FRIEND TO GIVE UP HIS STOOL. Yes, the one he was sitting on. "We try to make you as comfortable as possible--once you have a table," the waiter said.

Un-freaking-believable.

Circa minute 60, I get fed up enough to talk to the manager, and tell him that my party is starving. "Oh, absolutely, I totally understand, I apologize wholeheartedly. We'll have some appetizers brought out to you immediately. On the house, of course."

I feel at this point I don't even need to say it: the appetizers never materialized.

Skip this place. There is no excuse for this kind of service, especially in a recession. Businesses should be going out of their way for patrons willing to spend money -- not driving them into starvation-induced comas.

The food wasn't terrible at Macondo, but what we ordered wasn't worth $100. For starters, if the menu is designed to be shared and some of the items on the menu include Iberico ham drizzled with oil, or meatballs submerged in a chipotle sauce, then you better have some bread on the table. And if you don't, which Macondo doesn't, don't look confused when everyone at the table you're waiting on asks for it, and maybe put two and two together to realize, "Hmmm. That's a weird coincidence that everyone at that table asked for bread, yet none of them are together."

The menu gets its cues from varied Spanish influences, and it seems that the restaurant sharing motif, which is explained when you arrive, is no laughing matter. But are three -inch meatballs a) something fun to share between two people, or b) easy to share for that matter? "No, go ahead, you eat it," or "Why don't you cut that one in half?" Please. How often do groups of people eat in threes?! And do I want to pay $2.30 per fucking -inch meatball? If so, that meatball better be at least 1-inch, and fried in truffle oil. And if you're cues come from Spain, it's worth mentioning that three meatballs come with your beer order, at no charge.

Strangely enough, the drinks were much cheaper than the food; Sangria for two costs $12, and you get about 3 drinks out of the carafe. Again with the fucked-up math! The only good thing about Macondo is that it reminds you that if you're looking for tasting food, at very reasonable prices with an adventures and sensible approach to sharing, avoid Macondo and hurry over to Mercadito Cantina.

I went here this past Friday on a date.  First, a great date place - fun to share and the food is great to talk about.  Interesting cocktail menu.   I love the space & the various options of where to sit.  The staff is very warm and friendly.  We sat at the bar which I enjoyed because we got to see the kitchen sending out tons of dishes.
I recommend the crispy oysters.  The flat bread pizza was very good too.  The mushroom fig olive croquets were okay.  I am usually a fan of anything w/ polenta but the polenta w/ chorizo, manchego and egg was just too rich.  It was difficult to eat too bc the polenta was so liquidy.
Everything that came out looked really good.  I would love to go back to try the cubano. I'd recommend this place for large parties.

I've been here twice, first just to have a cocktail and then for dinner at a later date. First time it was cool, it's nice and summery how they have the bar open to the street. We were sat in the window which kind of felt like we were a visual display. Acai+Ron is yummy and watching all the characters go by on E. Houston is entertaining.

For dinner I had more acai+ron, and we ordered meatballs, salad verde, mushroom croquetas, and amarillo. We asked about strange beer drinking contraptions and they showed us the glass serving carafe (it looks like an oil separator) for their wine + soda or beer + soda concoctions. I asked for a side of chorizo, could they accommodate? Hot please? They did and it was the perfect last dish.

If we had more room we would've tried the sweet breads flat bread dish. Only complaints, someone at the table recommended they should serve bread so you can mop up the sauces (good suggestion) and they seemed like they were keen to get us out when we were just chilling and finishing up our cocktails at the end.

I don't have a true 'eating' experience here, but only a drinking one and I was very pleased with their bar. If you're looking for something different and are tired of always having to resort to your default 'go-to' drink when you go out, then this is a good place to try. All of their cocktails seem innovative and different. I had the Aguacate and Mezcal and it was delicious. I never thought I'd have a drink with honey + avocado, but I'm glad I did. Also, I think that compared to a lot of places in NY where a drink runs up upwards of $9, for $7.50 their drinks are pretty reasonably priced. I definitely want to go again and try out the rest of the menu.

Went here for drinks & dinner last night with a group of 5 others.
Red Sangria: delish. Not too strong and not watered down.
We ordered sooo much food, I was surprised we finished it all. There were a couple of dishes that we ordered -- when they came out we had no idea what they were. Not the best thing but we were being adventurous and tried them nonetheless.
Loved: mushroom croquettes, Buenos Aires (steak) flatbread, Yuca fries that come as a side or with the flatbreads and sandwiches
Not in love with, but ok: Salmon Ceviche, Peruana salad -- with quinoa, Arepa w/ quail...
I'd go back if for nothing else than the drinks and the mushroom croquettes.

Huge fan!
Love the environment, the service was good.
There could be quite a wait to be seated but it's worthed.
Since it's tappa style food I recommend it if you're not too hungry, the interesting thing is to try a little bit of everything.
I love the drinks, hands down for maracuya + vodka and the banana cachaca which is my favorite! YUM

Don't let the fancy exterior fool you, the service at Macondo is one hairsbreadth away from that of your local McDonalds-- wait-- Duane Reade. Atrocious. We waited over an hour to be seated after being told by the inept hostesses the wait was 20 minutes.  $9 cocktails that taste like watered-down popsicles, bland, lukewarm tacos, a spacey waitress who only materialized every 30 minutes... save yourself the headache.

I would sooner shoot myself in the foot than come here again.

1) Food - Mushroom croquettes! The menu has some options that you don't see all the time, since it's supposed to be street food. What really made the dishes stand out was the sauces. The red sangria was good. I want to go back to try their cocktails.
2) Service - Exceptionally friendly service from everyone, the hostess, cute waiters, busboys.
3) Price - Quite reasonable for the quality of food and the atmosphere.
4) Ambiance - It looks modern but still warm because of the wood tables/bar. Love the back area which is lit up in deep pink lighting and has vines climbing trellises lining the walls. The booths in the back would be good for a group. The bathroom walls are chalkboard so you can get your graffiti on.

Pan Latino spot near the Landmark Sunshine Theatre.  Brunchy options sounded good and include a drink.  The Mayan chocolate with it's subtle spice and rich flavor is killer.

Shredded short ribs on rounded sweet pressed toast was tasty, but oily.  A side salad with not too red tomatoes had decent flavor.

Service is cooly indifferent, in the I am too fab for doing this variety.  The musica is lovely though.

Great drinks actually, the twist of putting jalapenos in the drink added a nice oomph. The sangria was good as well. The polenta was great, as well as the mushroom croquettes. The Cubano probably could use some more mustard but you can never go wrong when you double pork anything. Good place for groups with the large tables/booths.

It's a really busy tapas place. But you won't be disappointed. I've been there twice and the service has been good (rare in NYC!) The atmosphere was a bit too energetic for me, so much so that I had to yell to my friends when we chatted.

I had Bacalao - cod fish with tomato, peppers and fried egg, de chimichurri - short ribs, monfongo - pork, etc. I drank the pomegranate drink called acai + ron (virgin) and loved it too!

Great place to have a big party, except that they don't like to split checks, so be prepared to do some calculation in the end!

RIGHT OFF THE BAT: The "perron" is a must for groups; it's a special kind of carafe that has a long narrow spout that, when poured right, shoots out a steady stream of liquor into the drinker's mouth from 3, 6, maybe even 12 inches away. A gimmick, but a fun one at that. I recommend a game I have dubbed the "perron-around-the-rosie"-

1) Everyone takes turns drinking the perron until somebody spills
2) That person has to hit their side drink
3) Inevitably everybody spills and starts side-boozing
4) ...which only makes the perron harder to handle
5) ... which leads to more side-boozeage
6) ...which makes it harder to handle
7) ...which leads to more side boozeage
8) ...and around and around we go

Not much to say; it's a tapas bar (i.e. showy, overpriced, mini-sized portions that are friggin delicious nonetheless). The Brazilian vibe is cool and the street-side bar inevitably leads to big crowds ideal for people watching...the sort of hip place that makes her want to put out.

Plus my waitress was definitely drunk, which is always plus.

For this price, I expected better. The food was poorly seasoned and everything tasted like it came out of a can. Also, there was a 2/3 dish minimum per person and that is just lame. Sigh, obviously things aren't great when you are forcing your customers to order more than they want to eat.

Don't come here, seriously, if you want tapas go to Xunta.

I went to Macondo on Wednesday to catch up with a girlfriend and bitch about work.  This was a good place to have a bitchfest...with the lousy service...it just made it all the easier for me to complain.   :)   The server could not explain the menu items, spilled our wine and the manager charged me $3 for bread to eat with shrimp ceviche.  (And they best not try to pull that authentic /pretentious shit as an excuse... most places give some nosh to cut the acidity.)

The wine selection is decent, food was interesting and presented well.  The decor borders on trendy/tacky.  I liked the netted hammocks cradling coconuts overhead, but I'm not a fan of canned food being used as decorative pieces.. but hey that's just me.

I could be convinced to come back for drinks/drapps... but that's about it...

Friendly service.  Nice atmosphere though you may end up sitting pretty close to another party at high table tops.

Cocktails are great.  You can get them by the glass or by the carafe.

Tasty small plates.  Great to share.

Started with the bacalaitos (little codfish cakes with spicy mayo) which were very good.  Had the willianco arepa (one of the signature dishes) with figs and quail, also great.  Arroz con pollo spicy and tasty with a side of espinacas with apples, pinenuts and raisins.

This place was a lot of fun and I'll definitely be back.  The whole menu looked good.  Will definitely be back to try other dishes!
