Pulled pork sandwich rivals my fave at Baby Blue's in Sf.
I'd say I'm a fan.
Too bad it closes so bloody early though. -

Mack's moved across and slightly down the street. But the positive vibe of the first visit was gone, it has become more about production less about warmth. The ribs this time were so falling off the bone as to be mushy and slimy, the sides had moved to the average or even sub-average. Not sure what happened. Maybe Mack's got discovered and is struggling to keep up mood and quality in the face of increased quantity, but this was a disappointment. Damn, where is the good BBQ on the Peninsula (other than through a caterer). Supposedly Gorilla BBQ in Pacifica let Guy Fieri go to their head and quality has slipped while attitude has peaked.
Where is the Beach Bully Barbeque (Virginia Beach) or even Blue Ribbon BBQ (Newton, MA) of Burlingame? We are in need of a fix!1 Previous Review: Show all »

We tried this today - I'm only giving it a "meh" because the experience was so uneven. I liked that it's a little divey place with quirky decor and the guy behind the counter was nice.
The pulled pork and slaw was pretty good, but the brisket wasn't as tender as it should've been, not to mention a bit cold. The mac 'n cheese was decent but not spectacular and the baked beans I didn't even bother eating because rather than having the delicious smokey flavor baked beans should have, they tasted like beans covered in brown pepper gravy. Overall, it was decent - no more, no less. -

This place is not all it's cracked up to be. They ran out of ribs an hour before closing, charged an arm and a leg for the food which is mediocre at best, and gave horrible service.
Basically, go somewhere else for BBQ. Had high hopes for this place, instead came out disappointed to say the least! -

My son just had his first child and we wanted to take the new parents dinner. Mack's came up on my iPad as a good BBQ rib place. We purchased ribs ,slaw, beans and corn bread. We all loved it so much that there was nothing left over to leave them for those mid night feedings. We shall return again and again.

Review from Mona W.
Ordered some BBQ rib takeout for a potluck party and they were pretty nice. Tender fall off the bone texture and seasoned with flavorful BBQ sauce. Not the best BBQ rib I have had but highly likeable.
The Yelp business hour listed seem to be incorrect. They actually close from 3pm - 4pm. If you get there when they just open, there could be a short wait (15-20 minutes) before the ribs are ready. On the bright side, everything will freshly made and you won't be disappointed.
$10 minimum for credit card charge. Bring some cash if you are eating alone. The ambiance is actually nicer than I have expected. Love the natural sunlight and tastefully decorated self served dining area. -

3.5 really.
Yes, we were one of those people that another person posted about - waiting until the last weekend to use our Living Social coupon!
My husband was coming back from the city and picked up a to-go order. He was standing behind a woman who ALSO had a coupon and the lady told her the order was limited to one order of ribs. No, that wasn't stipulated on the voucher, but I suspect they were overrun with people with coupons and their rib supply dwindling. That's ok, it's their business and it's not like there aren't other yummy things to order on the menu.
We got one full slab of ribs, brisket and pulled pork. All the meat was tender, with good flavor, my only criticism was too little sauce. Now, my husband is a "saucy" person (pun intended) - sauce, gravy, dip, you name it, he slathers it on! Me, not so much. But even I had to add some of our bbq sauce from the fridge.
He was puzzled by one reviewer's comment about the staff being rude - complete opposite of his experience; he said the lady who took his order was very nice. -

Ribs fall off the bone and it's seasoned well--not overpowered by a smokey flavor--Need I say more? If you're looking for great bbq, this is the place. It's small so I can imagine that it gets pretty packed during the rush hours (lunch? dinner?) We came on a Saturday around 2pm and had no trouble with service or finding a table. Only been here once but we'll be back.

Mack's is amazing. I have gone there a dozen times over the last couple years and they never dissapoint. I have gotten all of their sandwiches and they are all great. Compared to other sandwich places, they put on a ton of meat.
They also offer several draft beers and quite a few rootbears and other sodas (all glass bottles).
I suggest you ask for extra sauce onto the bun. It's too good! -

I've had bbq all around the bay area, and this place is easily the best bbq place in the Peninsula and top 3 in the Bay Area.
I was blown away by their brisket. Absolutely tender and flavorful! -

I usually go to Mack's after my paddling practices out of Bair Island Aquatic Center when I get the chance. They have a delicious pulled pork sandwich. Their mac and cheese was REALLY good the first time I tried it. but the 2nd time the mac and cheese wasn't so great. I think it depends on where they scoop (the top better - drier, the bottom - wetter/less cheesier).
This is by far one of the best pulled pork sandwiches in the bay area, and I highly recommend that. The only reason I'm giving them four stars is because they aren't open on Sunday. But that's a personal choice and I respect that.
They also have some imported beers I've never heard of. Overall, great place to chow down for less than $10. -

I absolutely *love* Mack's BBQ, been going there since they were in their original location on Laurel. Great meats for catering, take home, dine-in, etc.
What's the true mark of a great food place? It's where all the cops and firefighters eat, and that's certainly true at Mack's (also Speederia).
It *is* a BBQ place. (What does that mean, you say?) That means if they run out, they run out! Try something else, come back another day. Not like they're just throwing a hamburger on a grill (that's a grill, not a BBQ joint).
As to some reviewers who have commented negatively, the attitude of the customer will be reflected. If you come in grumpy, expect that in return. If you come in with a smile and a laugh, you get that! -

Brisket, pulled pork, tri-tip, ribs, hot links - they're all good here. I think the only meat I haven't tried is their chicken.
I love their baked beans. Very peppery.
Pretty good cole slaw, but it's chopped-style rather than my preferred shredded-style. That tends to be messier when you're eating it atop the meats (which I totally recommend.)
Solid mac & cheese, too.
My biggest problem is controlling how much I order. Being a fan of variety can be dangerous at Mack's. Consider yourself warned. :) -

Out of ribs, out of pulled pork before 7pm. FAIL. This has been the case our last 4 out of 5 visits here. Never coming back!

I eat at Mack's *at least* once a week and love the food, and everything about the place. All of the meats are delish, but my usual is the pulled pork sandwich, Carolina style (cole slaw on top), with spicy sauce. It's a sizable sandwich and a meal in itself, but it is so good I sometimes eat two (burp - wait until you see one). I tend to be particular about what I eat, but it is a particularly awesome sandwich.
As I mentioned, all of the meats are tasty, and the Tuesday night special of southern-style fried chicken is worth a trip. The sides are all good, and the cornbread and the macaroni and cheese with bacon are down-home treats. You'll taste and feel the love in this wonderful spot.
Highly recommended. Just about my favorite place to eat regularly on the peninsula. For a little foodie cred, I also like Baume in Palo Alto and Providence in LA. Mack's is right up there in its own delightful way. -

I wish I could give a better review...
1. The door said "closed" and it was only 6pm on a Tuesday night
2. When we got in the lady behind the counter simply yelled "the door was locked for a fu****** reason
3. Looks like she does not have the business sophistication to handle a living social promo - which is why she apparently closed early - coupon buys you are SOL
4. I am skeptical of a restaurant that has to rely on a coupon promo to survive on a weeknight
5. I did not even go there for any type of promo, just wanted to try the place out
6. They have a fantastic sign out front - I hope it fits in their garage when they close down in less than a year
7. They need to start a fund for lessons on hospitality, customer service and business acumen - proof of this is their non-working website -

The meat was excellent, ribs, pulled pork and brisket. I loved the cornbread.
The sides were awful, coleslaw too sweet, beans drab, mac and cheese dry and not really cheesy. I think next time I will skip and just get a salad.
I found the service to be excellent and the ladies behind the counter to be very sweet and accomadating - so not sure why other people have had a bad time with this. -

A LivingSocial deal drew me into Mack's and I've gone back since. Just about every comfort food item you could dream of is on the menu. Macaroni and cheese, corn bread, brisket, pulled pork, and OF COURSE, babyback ribs. The second time I went, fried chicken was a daily special. Mm.
Funny signs, cute ambiance and friendly employees. My favorite thing about the place was the back porch. I can't wait to come back and spend a hot summer night hanging out back there. -

Yummy!!
Heard about this place a few times and when I saw a Groupon for it I bought it right away because 1. I've been wanting to try it for a while 2. You ever know when you don't feel like making dinner and it just so happen you already have money to spend at a yummy place.
Well, now to the food...YUM! My Mom and I went in and got the ribs plus a side of coleslaw and I got some baked beans. BBQ for me goes both ways...either I really like it or I hate it! Mack's got it right on the money for my taste!!
The meat came off the bone so easily, and meat was juicy, there was just the right about of BBQ not a lot but but a bit, had the right sweet and spice to it, all around they were awesome!!
I couldn't have the coleslaw but I did have the baked beans. The first spoonfuls were great but after that I realized that they were too sweet for me!
It's a but out of my way but I would still go back! Plus, my parents really liked it as well and they are some picky eaters! Haha!
Oh yes...I thought the price was decent! Thought it was going to be WAY more than what we got charged for! Got 2 racks for 4 people and we had enough left overs for 2 people for the next day! -

Ribs, brisket and their hot links are phenomenal! There just aren't many "BBQ only" restaurants here in San Carlos and they do it well. The menu is on a chalk board, the sides are limited and the beer on tap is great!
If you love good food and a casual atmosphere, this is your place. -

Good food but the lady at front is very rude and very condescending. I was a little bit overwhelmed when I first came to the restaurant and took awhile to order. She gave me an attitude and was rushing me like there was a long line. I would recommend the food, but the owner needs to teach this lady about customer service.

Good BBQ. Pulled pork sandwich is fantastic. Ribs are fall off the bone good and the brisket was good as well. We didn't like the potato salad. It was too peppery. It would be great if they wrote down the orders and called you up when it was ready. I ended up telling people next to us that there order was ready because I almost took it. I most likely won't be going back because it is not worth the drive from SF.

Would have given 4 stars [food] but deducting 2 stars for the service. Lets go in order from best to worst.
-pulled pork sandwich. Moist, full of flavor, dripping with bbq sauce and the meats natural juices
-the stupid mobile app. downloaded it, expected the free side of mac. then the caveats came pouring in "oh, you have to check in"... couldnt find the restaurant within the app...finally found it in manual search mode... could NOT check in. cashier would not honor the free side. this side of mac n cheese better be good...
-grumpy lady serving the food, talked in to ordering the mac n cheese that would be given free if mobile app was downloaded*. first off, it was the worst mac n cheese i've ever had. kraft from the box would have been gold in this scenario. it was super wet, almost like a soup, with no cheese taste.
overall: the bbq was good, but the service left a bitter taste... -

Ok, here on some thoughts about this place.
The food is excellent from their chicken to the meat. I am convinced each night God descends from the heavens and kisses their food, and I am NOT a religious person by any means. The only place I know that has as good BBQ is in SLO County.
The hometown feel is once again alive. This is a typical mom and pop shop, with locals in and out each night. None of this corporate BS.
What makes this place great is that they are strictly about the food, and it shows. Nothing fancy to take your mind away from what you came here for , THE MEAT !!!!
And lastly, I have read a lot of reviews about the lady runing the restaurant. Some people even complained about her attitude. Here is my opinion on this topic. QYB, which stands for QUIT YOUR BI$%HING !!!!!!! When food is this good, the owners have the luxury of NOT having to act polite if you come in with your expecation's all high in the sky just because you are "the customer". Its kind of like the soup nazi episode from Seinfeld.
I should say that I have never expereineced any negativity from either of the owners, but then again I am not one of those easily offended people who needs positive reinforcement by putting other people down because "my feelings got hurt" (insert an obvicously pampered stuck up self centered accent here)
If you want great food at a great price, and the feel of hometown atmosphere, go to Macks. -

Outstanding!!!!!! Ok for starters this is the best BBQ in the bay area. I went in tonight and was appalled by all of the living social patrons who were demanding to say the least. First off if you have six months to claim your voucher then why wait until the last night and then yell at the workers when they run out of food. It was packed and I don't think they could of been more accommodating. Hey, you are getting your food for half price geez. Reality is when you get a great deal be happy. Now the food. Ribs are off the charts, tender and juicy. Brisket and tri-tip tasty and very proportionate. Bottom line is give this place a shot. You will not be disappointed. 5 stars all the way..............

Marginal - at best....
In a nutshell, the ribs were overcooked and slathered in bbq sauce (overpowering). We also ordered a lb. of tri tip - which they were out of, cornbread was supposed to come with our meal - which they were out of....need I say more as to how our ordering and meal went? Oh - - and the macaroni and cheese tasted dayzzzzzzzz old - very soggy and also salty in patches...
Though I love the idea of bringing in local talent, the "music" was extremely loud for a place of that size and the hawaiian talent was a bit on the tacky side (love Hawaiian music, but this was not so good...)
Lastly, the lady behind the counter (think she was the manager) was extremely rude and frazzled-appearing. - - - she is not the person to have interfacing with customers.
There are many good bbq places around - - unfortunately, this was not one of them...Comment from Jason M. of Mack's BBQ 7/25/2011

Stopped here the other day on our way back from a Bday party.
We got a few different meats and sides to tri.
Brisket/Tri-Tip was really good. Tasty and had a great flavor to it.
Mac/Cheese and Coleslaw were good.
Pulled Pork and Beans/Potato Salad- Ok
If im in the area, I will definitely go back for the meats. -

For the longest time, I held off on going to Mack's because I always brought food from home to take to work. I used to feel left out because I didn't share the same smiles that they had after coming back from Mack's. Now that I've tried it, I can see why they smile so much.
The first time I came here, I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. If you like cole slaw, make sure you order this "Carolina Style". The meat is tender and delicious, and the slaw really adds a nice crunch to it. My only minor gripe is that I wish the bread was toasted a little. Nothing too major; just a thought.
The second time I visited, I ordered the ribs, on my friend's recommendation. Some of the most tender ribs I've had (that honor still goes to Gorilla BBQ). STILL, Mack's has got some very good ribs. And they lather it was a lot of BBQ sauce, which I like. If you don't, then just ask for it on the side. They won't get mad at you.
I myself haven't had too many of their sides. So far, I've only tried the cole slaw (delicious) and their peppered potato salad. If you are a fan of black pepper, then you will LOVE their peppered potato salad. Otherwise, just get the regular potato salad.
Service is really friendly. Clean interior. Overall, really good place.
NOTE: Most of the time, they have a huge tub of Dubble-Bubble as your exiting the restaurant. For FREE! It's AWESOME! I remember trying to chew 8 of these at once. I really hurt my jaw...and teeth. So I don't recommend it. -

Finally a good peninsula bbq place!
Went here on a livingsocial deal and shoot I should have bought two or three!!!
Came here mid day on a saturday afternoon with just a couple people inside. No traffic and a ton of street parking.
All the bbq smelt great and had a simple menu. I was excited to spend my 40$ in food!
I had got a combo with 3 ribs and tri-tip with a side of baked beans.
Well, she gave me 4 ribs, yess and they were great. Sweet and spicy sauce, tender meat. I had to get extra sauce just to dip my tri-tip into which was also super good.
They also have good big sized sodas and a good selection of belgian beers in their little cooler which was a nice surprise. Good taste in bbq and beer that's a nice combo to see.
The staff consisted of the cashier and cook. Both were very nice and got you taken care of fast and efficiently.
The prices were a little high to me, but from what you have to choose from in this area. It is well worth it and I will be coming back here for sure! -

The atmosphere is not very welcoming. The place was empty and workers at the counter are not very friendly.
Food was blah which means i rather have the subway BBQ pulled pork than this food. The ribs were very very very saucy could not taste the flavor of the meat, the cornbread was very dry and nasty and the mac and cheese tastes old and worse than Kraft's!!!!
would i come here again No. Why i went--i had a living social deal..
unless you have a coupon you have not used please don't come here. -

Wonderful and friendly service! Good food with very reasonable price.
We went on a Saturday night around 7pm, ah hour before their closing time. Got the pull-pork sandwich combo and half-slab combo, with mac n cheese and corn bread, also a slice of sweet potato pie. Total was $38, food was more than enough for three adults and a baby.
The meats were succulent, juicy, tasty. Mac n cheese has bacon bits, which makes it more tasty. I ordered a slice of sweet potato pie, and the lady at the counter gave me a free one just because the whipped cream on one of the piece was smushed. I didn't even noticed that until she pointed it out! Before we left, she also gave us half a dozen of cornbread for free.
The reason why I'd come back is definitely for the food though. If I crave ribs I'd come here. It's close by, it tastes good, it doesn't cost an arm or a leg. -

It was either ribs or Dojo Ramen in San Mateo. We were afraid of the traffic and long wait at Dojo, so ribs it is!
We had the pulled pork sandwich and combo 3, which was 3 pieces of ribs, 1 lb tri tip, side of mac&cheese, and corn bread. Sandwich was $7 and combo 3 was $13. The combo was such a good deal!!! The ribs itself was not bad, not enough BBQ sauce so we had to ask for extra sauce. I think the meat was a bit hard as well. Pulled pork was good but my fave was the tri tip. Mac & cheese was just EH and I didn't try the corn bread. It was a lot of food...be sure to get stuffed and expect food coma. -

Was looking forward to trying a new BBQ place when I bought a $40 Living Social voucher, but when I went in and ordered 2 full slabs of ribs and a couple side dishes, Vicki, the owner, said "we're not doing ribs with the Living Social deal". When I calmly reminded her that there was no such restriction on the voucher, she just said, "well, we've changed it." I walked out. A competent business person would not turn away business in these economic times, especially when the MAIN REASON why business owners do the Groupon/Daily Deals/Living Social deals is TO GET NEW CUSTOMERS TO TRY THEIR BUSINESS. I'm going to make it my personal mission, between now and, say, April 1st (i.e., April Fools Day...in honor of Vicki) to tell my family, friends, business colleagues, grocer, hair cutter, dry cleaner....well you get the idea...of the customer service experience I had at Mack's BBQ. Because of Vicki, I didn't get to try the food, but if is the quality of their customer service is any indication of the quality of their food preparation, I can only imagine what goes on behind closed doors in the kitchen.
P.S. for what it's worth, the place was empty on Friday at 7pm...gee, I wonder why.Comment from Jason M. of Mack's BBQ 12/11/2011

Ain't shit.
The prices are coo I guess for the food but it taste alright. The mac n cheese taste like tofu and water...meaning nothing. You got to put like the whole salt container on the mac n cheese just to taste it; so that means you can't finish it or else your end up with hypertension.
There are big TV's in the restaraunt but then there's one problem...they don't turn it on, so I had to miss Panda's return RBI.
Traffic is horrible getting to the place. Horrible.
The servers were nice though.

Succulent ribs, BBQ sauce, baked beans, and potato salad. I got the number 4 meal (6 ribs, a 6-oz. side, and a corn muffin) and was satisfied by the end. Their beer selection is impressive containing many unusual labels. I had a Flemish Red Ale that was delicious but for $5.75, seemed a tad high for an establishment like this: it was either choose a boring, domestic beer, or something totally unusual. I didn't see a beer price list anywhere.
The new, back patio is a nice place to eat, with a fire place, a fountain and some nice chairs for lounging. I'd probably want to eat in the main dining room or in front of the restaurant next time since the tall fence and awning kind of make the back patio a tad claustrophobic.
Mack's does an excellent job with making Southern cooking in a friendly, non-pretentious atmosphere. I like that you order at a counter and eat off paper-lined plastic trays. I went with a Living Social deal but wonder whether the prices would be a little too high otherwise. -

4 star food, 2 star service. Mack's has great BBQ pulled pork and Mac n Cheese. The ribs were a little dry but I got them close to closing time so I need to try them again during prime time. Beware that they often run out of things so go early.
Finally, as others have mentioned, the service can be poor not because it's slow but because of the "attitude." -

we went on the 50% deal from living social.
Ordered 3 ribs, 1 pulled pork sandwich, mac-N-cheese, cole slaw and cornbread.
The ribs were great juicy meat, pulled pork was fantastic. I wish the BBQ sauce is more marinated into the meat, than to be smothered on top.
Cole Slaw is average tasting.
Mac-n-cheese is overcooked, but great cheesy flavor.
Will I come back? Maybe not -

First impressions are always important. Here at Mack's BBQ I guess you can say that their first impression was pretty good :)
My boyfriend and I both ordered ribs but my boyfriend's meal was a combo that also had tri tip. For our sides he had baked beans that he was really pleased with and I had a simple green salad. I would have loved to try the other sides but I figured salad was the healthiest option for me. We each also got a corn muffin.
Everything was good. Food was worth the price. The ribs were very tender and the sauce was sweet with just the right amount of spice. I noticed that different people complained about this place running out of things but that didn't happen to us. We came for lunch so I guess that's the best time to go.
Service was fine. The lady who put together our order was nice and always smiled. Mack's BBQ was pretty good. Definitely somewhere memorable because it's hard to find a place with good BBQ in the area that I live in. My boyfriend was very pleased with our visit so I expect that we will be coming back.
