Review Highlights
Liked it- Not loved it- But if I lived in the area consistently I could see myself stopping here for needs and wants...
Cute bare style bakery with a seating area, tv, and espresso. Stocked small produce, dairy, and fish + meats section. Salad bar and olive bar that sells by the pound. Typical grilled sandwich section, hot bar with things like jojos, and the required urban market sushi to go section. Cut up fruit and prepackaged meals. Stocked wine section and chilled beer section with lots of local options. Couple aisles with typical grocery selection.
To put the store into perspective- I saw a woman(downtown suit style with status bag and jewelry) with a cart and it was full (they only have half style carts) and I instantly though "You have got to be kidding me" to her doing all her shopping here... It is just not that kind of place... due to prices(can be outrageous on a few things) and to the style of store... You can judge for yourself though! Also, when I left I had two Cascadia Fresh yogurts, a LARA bar, cooked butternut squash(last one packaged- checker told me the deli was on a butternut squash kick), & a piece of chocolate.... M Street Grocery was perfect for this randomness of lunch and breakfast needs...
FYI's~
* Deli closed at 7:30pm
* Small Indian, Asian, and Thai sections
* Good ice cream selection- organic, random brand, ben & jerry's, hd, gelato, mochi, dryer's etc
* Great food and nutrition bar selection
* Amy's organic products sold(even frozen)
* The vegan/vegetarian meats(products) are next to the cold cheesecakes and other desserts
* Bavarian Meats is sold here
5 Stars for the fact that it's a "full" grocery store on First Hill! Why are there not more grocery stores in the area? While they may not have every item you're looking for, they have a pretty decent selection, especially since the store itself isn't that big. Their produce is fresh and I'm pretty amazed at the quality of their deli. In general, their pre-made food is delicious. Mac and Cheese FTW! Additionally, if you're looking for a decent bottle of wine, M Street's your place.
-1 star for not so great coffee. Sure I probably shouldn't complain because 90% of the time I get a Vanilla Latte and the Vanilla (in theory) should cover up any bitter tastes, but their coffee isn't so great and a burnt, bitter taste always comes through. What's up with that?
-1 star for relatively overpriced merchandise. Sure, prices have gone down since when they first opened, but I occasionally cringe seeing the prices of items I can get for far cheaper elsewhere....
Minus a few gripes, M Street is pretty sweet. The free wi-fi almost cancels out the bad coffee and the good service counterbalances the high prices.... plus, where else can you get your grocery shopping done in the area?
THE HIPSTER GROCERY STORE!
haha. Everyone who works here is super fly. I've always had great customer service too, as far as cashiers go.
I think they should have a larger frozen food section for us poor, cheap people, and LOWER THE PRICES. I was so glad to leave Red Apple behind when I moved from the CD but this is like it's little sister. All the same signs and high prices are still there.

I like it, I like it. It makes my new 'hood feel homey. I can't believe First Hill didn't have a grocery store before this!
I also got an awesome juicy peach there yesterday, along with some cherries. Both were delectable. Amen.
It's very nice to have a stocked grocery store in First Hill. They have a pretty good selection of fresh produce,a deli counter, coffee shop, and a nice wine selection. The cashiers are always nice and the store is always kept up. There is free wifi for customers in the coffee shop. The only down side is the high prices but I guess that is to be expected for a grocery store on First Hill.
Also they grill out on Tuesday and Fridays, I think. Half chickens or ribs for $5. Pretty rockin deal. Free validated parking next door in the parking garage.
The only good thing about this place is the friendly staff. Other than that, prices are significantly higher than QFC or Fred Meyer's. They do have a decent, if not cheap, cooked food section in the back.
I went to the coffee shop to get some work done because I had seen the sign for free wi-fi. The place is really small and pretty loud so it's not the best working environment. The drip coffee in the coffee shop was unpalatable. It may have been the worst coffee I've ever had, and absolutely unacceptable for Seattle. It was still grimace-inducing bitter after I had laced it with copious amounts of sugar (and I normally don't need to do this for decent black coffee). I choked down about a quarter cup before giving up.
They offer 20 cents off your purchase if you bring your own cup. Hopefully their espresso drinks are better than their drip.
When it first opened, it was an overpriced, ishy disaster.
It's gotten better...much better. The coffee's good; it's improved markedly, though it ain't Dutch Bros, it's decent drip. The grocery selection is targeted and trends a bit spendy but isn't outrageously priced; prices have gotten more reasonable since opening. The staff is nice. They're open until 10:30 now. The prepared food is pretty good. The wifi works nicely if you're out to connect in this upscale minimart on steroids.
I like saving money by bringing my own cup for my coffee. I adore the service at the meat counter when i need some weird amount of something, they'll make it so.
The quality of the produce and the deli is superb.
The staff is always friendly and helpful.
The selection is a little limited and the aisles are a little narrow.
Great convenience. This little store has everything that I need for a quick stop. Fair prices and you cant beat the location (at least for me). I love the hot soup bar and the salad bar. Cafe Vita is a nice addition but I usually make my own java.
Think I need some milk, and maybe a banana to go with my cereal this morning...guess it's time for a quick walk!
M Street continues to get better and better. They have almost everything I need in a grocery store.
When it first opened, I thought it was a little expensive, but all I need is the occasional trip to QFC to remind me that it's not. If you live in First Hill, you can't beat the convenience. And they recently extended their evening hours and are open until 10:30 most nights.
The hours are good, as is the coffee, and the employees.
It is a great grocery for the occasional needed item and even better for a nice bottle of wine. Love the produce section and the deli areas are great. They even have some good options for lunch on the go.
30 minutes of free wifi with purchase and they have great hamburger meals Wednesday.
There's FINALLY a proper grocery store on First Hill! Found on the corner of 8th and Madison, M Street Grocery is a brand new, small grocery (not a convenience store!) located on the bottom floor of the M Street Apartments. They have all the departments (though abbreviated due to the small size of the store) that a normal grocery store has as far as I could see.
Highlights: a good showing of organic produce, a fully staffed meat/seafood counter with made-in-store sausages, a staffed deli (you must partake of their mac and cheese found in the cold counter) with a lovely-looking salad/olive bar and hot pizza to go, a Caffe Vita coffee shop with luscious pastries, a bakery, cut flowers, a totally decent wine section (reasonably priced) and aisles full of good food, from the basic and cheap to the shee-shee and pricey.
A couple of small disappointments: they don't carry Earth Balance (yet) or Cholula. Other than that this store is small but packed with good stuff to eat. This is my new happy place.
And best of all, you can now come home from your downtown job to your First Hill home without having to drag your sorry ass to QFC for dinner makings!
What a handy little shop! What makes this place stand out for me is the service. Wow! I forgot what it was like to have that small-town grocer feel. Emily, the checker, was really nice.
They have free parking and a decent selection for such a small place. I popped in real quickly for some bbq supplies and they had 1-2 of everything I needed. I was especially impressed with the fruit selection.
Also the bathroom was clean.
This is my second review of the M Street Grocery. I have to say...they have improved immensely! The prices are lower, the cafe is faster, and the staff is more helpful every time I go here (which is everyday since I live upstairs).
After spending quite a bit of time working from the coffee shop (which gives you all day free wireless with purchase of coffee), I realized this is the best of both worlds: deli food, coffee, easy parking, and wi-fi. At lunch time it is all hustle and bustle with construction workers, medical professionals, businessy people, people on blind dates, etc. Very exciting!
So, if you are on First Hill, check out the M Street Grocery and Cafe. I take back everything I said in the previous review!:-)

M Street gets 2 stars because of the awesome wine selection and the deli. Oh, and the fiesty… Read more »
I think this little grocery store is great! but a little overpriced. I guess you pay for convience and it's way better than a 7-11.
They have a great fruit and veggie selection, lots of cheeses. Kind of like a healthy food store, a small version of Whole Foods. And my favorite is the beer and wine selection. They have a great beer and wine section. I never know what I'm going to end up taking home!
I live and work just a couple blocks away so it is super convinent.
I have only 2 dislikes. That is is a little overpriced. And that it closes at 10pm. I get off work at 10 and many times I've wanted to stop by on my way home and then I remember that is is already closed. Bummer. Stay open til 10:30 for me please!
This is a beautiful new store, and it's neat and super clean. The staff seem to be pretty friendly--and I was there at 7am, so I'm sure they get more talkative as the day goes on. The only thing I bought on this trip was a latte at the cafe, and this is the reason for only 3 stars. The service was sooo sloooow, and my latte was so bad it was almost undrinkable (but the need for a caffeine fix got the best of me!). The rest of the store also seemed a little pricey, but it would be a great option based on its convenience/proximity to home or work and/or if you just need a couple of last minute items.
EDIT: i went back and looked more closely at their prices, and they're actally really really good! the lattes still suck though.
I want to add to the M Street love! I just returned from my first visit and I have to say for a small store it really packs a punch. It had everything I needed and some things I didn't realize I needed!
I have a cold so I went in search of soup. They have at least 4 different types in the deli area and I went with the Mushroom. Boy was it ever tasty!
I'll definitely be back. Another tthing that really stood out was the service. Everyone was helpful and friendly. The lady who checked me out was extremely friendly and offered more suggestions in the store. We actually had a conversation! WOW!!
Hey, it's a real grocery store a block and a half from my apartment. They have a pretty good selection for their size, and the produce is great. I go there almost every day since it's so close and my favourite checker Penny is always great to me.
Oh and the review about there being too much alcohol (social ill wills?) needs to get over himself and just go to QFC.
The prices seem to have gotten a little more reasonable than when it first opened. Apples 99 cents a pound!
I agree that the produce here is really good quality--much better than some of the other places around here.
There is a nice local feel--I asked the butcher if they carried spicy italian sausage out of the casing, and he seemed excited that he'd made it just that morning. The sausage made some yummy spaghetti and meatballs!
I'll continue shopping here. Especially because the grocery that was supposed to go in under my building in Spring 2007 is looking less and less likely by the day.
The other day I came here and got two bags of groceries for $30.00! And the checker was nice too. Whoo Whoo.
Found myself wandering through the First Hill neighborhood (why is it called First Hill??) this weekend and ended up at this really cool little market...M Street Grocery. Looks kinda' like a small version of a Whole Foods (though NOT as pricey). I decided to grab a bite to eat and had a great sandwich on the recommendation of the "deli guy" behind the counter. After chowing down outside, I had a pretty good cup o' coffee in their cafe. Overall, a good experience--good food, good coffee and nice staff.
Very convenient, good selection, enjoy the prepared food section, especially the breakfast samosa, which as we all know is nature's most perfect food. The free one-hour parking is ample and safe. Nice to be able to pick up food on the way home on foot. The only complaint, and it's minor, is the coffee is not quite on par with the competition. I think this will improve as it goes on though.
Great little place to shop. They are expanding their organic selection, which will be nice. I am partial though, since I can walk to it, but it is the best place to walk to. Although some of the people that work there are in your face rude. But, you just learn who they are and don't get in their line. =)
M street is the greatest place on earth. Everyone here is so friendly. I find myself making many trips here in a day. Prices are a bit high and the selection is slim but it's right in the middle of downtown so what do you you expect? Some of the best bagers in town work here. I always get the fresh sushi.
M Street Grocery makes my life a whole lot easier, esp. since I live nearby. I can just pop in for anything I need whenever I need it. While it's not quite Whole Pay Check and tries to be better than a Safeway, it doesn't always hit the mark. I can't whinge too much though as it's so soo much better than most corner stores. Their produce is pretty good, they've got a really good prepared foods/deli section, wide variety of big brand and gourmet foods and they have Caffe Vita at the espresso bar. The one thing that is a little spotty is the meat/poultry section. I've often seen brown meat and fish that looks 'not so fresh'. So, I've strayed away from that. That aside, I'm glad this market is here as it definitely adds value to the local community as well as to my daily life.
the location is great. the prices are slightly high. but i figure not having to drive somewhere or take the bus is worth paying a little more. the selection is good for a small place and the produce much better than at the larger chain stores. i will definitely return if only for the fact that it is the closest grocery store to my place...convenience is worth something.
