What's not to love. Soul food, friendly service and smothered fried chicken, dark meat of course. Lots of corn bread and free iced tea.
Lunch specials are great here and served fast. Three out of four of us ordered the smothered chicken, fourth ordered fried chicken. Sides: Corn, Mashed potatoes, and Mac and Cheese tasty and buttery as usual.
We were all fully satisfied and ready to sleep afterward, too bad its time to go back to work
I'll let you in on a little secret.... If you go to M & M Soul Food it is very probable that you will feel like the Violet Beauregarde character in the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in the scene where she turns into a ginormous blueberry! I think I've figured out the way to avoid this!
Let's face it. I'm never going to tell the waitress to not bring our table cornbread because I'm pretty sure the minute the request came out of my mouth, the place would go silent and every person in the restaurant would be looking at me like I had just raped the baby Jesus and I'd probably be asked to leave and rightfully so!
I don't even really like cornbread, but this cornbread is warm and smells delicious. I don't even like butter, but I can't resist ripping into that country crock and slathering that slow churned butter on to the cornbread and drenching every bite in honey! It would be futile to try to save stomach space and calories by skipping the cornbread it's simply unavoidable.
Here's where you have room for compromise. If you order an entree, you're going to get 3 sides and gorge yourself unless you're one of those peple who can stop yourself when you're full and take the leftovers home. If you're not one of the later here's what you've got to do....just skip the proteins and simply make a meal of sides (you may think this isn't filling but don't forget that you've already inhaled two cornbread muffins) but who are we kidding? I love the fried chicken with the crispy exterior and moist and juicy interior! I'm not going to skip that! I just don't have that kind of "skinny girl willpower" so the best thing to do is to share an entree with its 3 sides with a dinning companion! I know... I know.... I'm a genius!
If you can't decide which sides to get I would recommend skipping the rice because it's overcooked and under salted. The succotash is the best I've ever tasted, the red beans and string beans are fantastic (how they make gross green beans out of a can taste so good is confounding) You could skip the Mac and Cheese because it's not going to blow any yelper away, we've all had better, but the yams are a must!
Now that I've figured out how to not over do it at M & M soulfood and have to get rolled out of there by oompa loompas, I can't wait until my next visit!
Be prepared to go into a "food coma" after leaving this place.
I seriously thought the sides were my main dish since it came out first - it was piled high in their little sections of the plate, one word = humongous!!! The BF ordered fried chicken with mac and cheese, collard greens, and rice with gravy ($10.99). I ordered meatloaf with buttered corn, potato salad, and rice with gravy ($10.99). Funny how us Asians need them RICE, lol. And an order alone can seriously feed a family of four - dude, I was definitely "souled" up!
Oh I forgot to mention, cornbread was also provided. Not one piece of cornbread, not two, but a plate full of cornbread. And not on a round plate, but an oval plate, now that's a lot of cornbread!
I hadn't been to this place in a few years because, despite great food, the service was horrible. Stopped in there this past sunday and was pleasantly surprised. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. The food was great as usual (catfish, mac-n-cheese, greens and yams). The good service has made me a believer in this place again. I was even offered a free order of cobbler for the wait. I'll be back!
roscos has NOTHING on this place. its so much better than roscos. Their food is REAL soul food and a rarity in LA a place wehre soulfood should be much like in New York.
the yams here are like candy, and the chicken here is just insanely good!
its actually in culver city to be specific. and i live in burbank, its worth the 30minite drive.
1st let me start of by saying that this restaurant is NOT in Crenshaw, it's in Ladera about 1/4 mile from the Magic Johnson's TGIF's. I've driven by this place a thousand times and never thought to go in. A friend at work mentioned that she had heard it was good.
We went to M&M last night with my entire family and a couple of the kid's friends, party of 7. We arrived at 6:30 and had no problem getting a table. Our waitress was a sweetie. She told us that they were serving lunch specials for dinner... whoo hoo that knocked a chunk of the bill. Then out comes a tray of corn bread muffins. Piping hot and melt in your mouth..... they had me at muffins! For entre I had the fried chicken with Mac & Cheese and cornbread dressing... yes carb overload! The chicken was piping hot, crispy and juicy. I LOVED the Mac & Cheese. Hubby had the meatloaf, after the first bite he turned to me sheepishly, when I asked what was wrong he told me that it was better than the meatloaf that I make. The rest of the group all enjoyed their meals.
The whole feeling of the place was like eating at someone's house. Friendly patrons and a sense that everyone knows each other. M&M has a busy take out window. I think that there were more take out customers than sit down. I will be back! YUM!
WHAT A NIGHTMARE!
We, a party of 6, went there the other night at 10 minutes 'till nine not knowing what time they close. The door says they close at nine. So we go in. So the nice waitress tells us we can only get our food to go. So we discuss. Then we ask her if we can get the food to go and sit at a table and eat it. So she asks the older lady sitting at a table by herself if that's OK. It seems the older lady is calling the shots. She says OK.
So we sit down and try to order. They don't have this, they don't have that, they shut the fryer down and cleaned it so we can't have this, we can't have that.
The waitress was very sweet but the older lady was a crank. Clearly, she didn't care if we ate there or not.
So we got up and left.
BOTTOM LINE: If your door say open until nine, then you serve whoever comes in. You close the doors at nine and start shutting down the kitchen then. You don't shut down the kitchen before you close.
If you want to close at 8:30 or 8:45, you put that on the door.
We went there because I've eaten there before and all the 4+ star reviews are right. But personally, I won't go back to anyplace that treats me like that. There's too many good places in L.A. to eat.
I'm thinking they threw away at least $150.00. Plus future revenue as I like this place and often go with a bunch of people.
Oh, well...
order the catfish!!
catfish is the bomb!
the reason y I give m & m 3 stars is because,
I asked dude.. I said 'dude, there's 4 of us eating..
how much chicken should we get?'
so he answers.. 'well, u get 3 pieces,
(with the dinner)
.. but u can order 1 more a la carte.'
so I say.. 'alright, I'll just order the catfish a la carte.'
thinking this chicken dinner is just that.. a fam sized dinner.
we get back to the telly and it's not. Its for like 2 people.
it could've been our fault for not having him elaborate..
but, come on man..
I told u four ppl.
he could've suggested how much chicken we should've got..
or tried to explain the portions more.
you only work there homie, u know better than me your damn portion sizes.
anyway, foodwise..
I asked for dark meat and dudes on a roll..
'i think we have some dark meat..'
what do u mean? u think? the menu says:
dark or white.
so thinking it's gonna be some juicy white meat..
we get a mix of dark and white.
white meat was dry!
lucky the gravy was hella good.
otherwise i'd be on the cusp between 2 & 3 stars.
btw: you gotta get extra gravy on the side man..
primo.
u get 3 sides with a meal..
so reading the reviews I order mac & cheese...
and what do u know!
no more mac & cheese!
let me just add here that we came in an hour before closing.
-so I ask, 'like.. u don't have anymore at all?'
not wanting to deal with this dude and his dissapointments we opt for potato salad, rice & gravy, & buttered corn.
positive note: sides were excellent..
and did I already mention that the catfish is a must?
Unbelievably tasty, smothered fried chicken, collard greens, succotash. Not a fan of the corn bread tho, Famous Dave still the winner for that bread.
I'm so in love with southern cooking. And southern cooking loves me. My gut tells me so. M and M's never disappoints. The sweet corn is some of the best I've ever tasted. The fried chicken is always moist. I love their cornbread too. The mac and cheese was a little cheesy for my taste. The service is always friendly and I think the prices are very reasonable. I had a take out plate with fried chicken and 3 sides and I was eating on it for two days. They give you a shit load of food for the price. I'd be going back more often if I wasn't scared of weighing 300 pounds.
Remember these lyrics from the Ice Cube song Steady Mobbin'?
"Since one time's so hot
Got me stash spot in the hooptie for the glock
And I'm rollin' on rims
Eating soul food, neckbones from M&M's "
Now we didn't order any neckbones, and honestly, I don't remember seeing them on the menu, but if I can say one thing about M&M's, if it's smothered in gravy, it's probably good.
They were out of short ribs by the time we got there, so I got the smothered oxtails instead. The oxtails were almost falling off the bone and the portions at M&M's are generous.
Another great gravy-laden dish was the smothered fried chicken. What I loved about it (besides the gravy) was that the skin was still really crispy and fatty and delicious. I'm pretty sure this fried chicken is fantastic on its own.
M&M's is also very generous with their sides--you get three choices per entree. On our table, we had collard greens, green beans, dressing, corn, mac and cheese, rice and gravy, and red beans, but I didn't think any of them were really outstanding. They do a pretty good cornbread though.
Depsite the lackluster sides, I'd still go back to M&M's for the main courses, especially because I didn't get to try the short ribs.
Great Place! Just went there with my girlfriend, who also loves soul food. We loved it. Friendly service, cheap prices, huge portions (we shared & I have left overs), & it's really close to LAX. We ordered the fried chicken with: red beans, sweet corn, plus mac & cheese. Fantastic. Great house hot sauce. Fairly small dining room so maybe take out. EAT HERE!
Soul food? More like "soul full"!
Roscoe's? Huh? What's Roscoe's? This place has exceeded my expectations. The food, value and quantity is well worth checking this place out.
I got the fried chicken with collard greens, mac & cheese and string beans. Not to mention the corn muffins they give you the moment your butt meets the booth. When you get your food your butt won't be leaving the booth for a while. M & M's gives you food for days.
After punching in the address, the name, on Yelp, on Google Maps, it put me on S. Centinela Ave just North of Jefferson Blvd. Now why would this damn city have so many street names with the same name?
When I finally got here, even some of the patrons asked what took me so long. That was the funniest thing. My friends were just about finished as I was about to order. I really wanted the short ribs but the waitress was quick to point out they were out of that tonight. They were out of a lot of stuff. Fried chicken and meatloaf and BBQ chicken were among the items left. If you know me well, you would know that I would pick BBQ chicken in a heart beat. The sides I ordered was the steamed corn, mac & cheese, corn bread stuffing.
The orders come out quick and really steaming hot. I like red rooster hot sauce but I always forget to put any on my food. The BBQ sauce was sweet, a little more smokey would be really good. The chicken was certainly falling off the bone. I finished that in a quick jiffy. The corn was sweet as well naturally. I missed the corn bread but thought the corn bread stuffing would be a good replacement. I guessed wrong. I didn't like the corn bread stuffing at all. I thought the mac & cheese was just ok but all this could be because I woofed down the BBQ chicken really fast. Everything was served really hot which is good.
This place has a huge rush and then a quiet point for like 5 seconds and then they get bombarded again with customers. You're lucky if you get a parking spot in this parking lot fighting with people stopping in at the 7-Eleven also. Street parking if you can find it. It's pretty awesome if you are hungry. Food comes out fast and that's a plus. Tip your server well because they have a great memory if you want to come back. There is also a really long line for take-out.
M & M is a great spot if you miss some down-to-earth Southern comfort food. It's the mom-and-pop version of Roscoe's minus that terrible neon lighting.
Despite my warm and fuzzy proclivity towards this restaurant's namesake (my initials are "M & M"), I find the food to be IMHO just okay. However, food is just one aspect of the dining experience. Authenticity is also one important factor. And M & M's authentic home cooking more than compensates for what might be lacking in the actual flavors of the food.
Authenticity in this context refers to "Sunday cooking straight from Grandma's kitchen." It's the very fact that this food lacks the refined qualities of typical restaurant fare that gives M&M its soul (no pun intended).
I lived in Ladera Heights, which is where M&M is located, when I first moved to LA for work. I was a line cook for Spago BH. Ironically, it was my ex-gf who introduced me to M&M. You can get everything from fried chicken, waffles, black-eyed peas, grits, collard greens, corn bread, fried catfish, and BBQ. No surprises here. Again, I never ate anything that blew me away, but I do think we all enjoy a meal that truly makes us feel at home.
The service is very friendly and the prices are slightly more expensive than what you'd expect. $15-20 a person.
It's been years since I've eaten there and I'm sure my next visit will spark nostalgia. I was 24 back then! I hope M&M keeps it real.
If you like your food drenched in gravy, M&M is the place for you. My carry out order of smothered chicken and turkey wings weighed a ton - they give you so much food (and gravy) and abundance of sides I was more than surprised by the heft of the bag.
This place is big on portions, flavors, gravy, butter - all the things that put you in a food coma (and maybe a heart attack). The yams are to die for, and enjoyed the potato salad too. And the smothered chicken - fried chicken smothered in gravy - what more need I say?
What would a trip to LA be without making a stop at M&M?? Aww, I love this place, I'm kind of glad we don't have one in the Bay Area because I would be there ALL the time and gain a ton of weight!
At first glance of the menu I thought the prices were kind of high for Soul Food, (i.e. $17 for the Fried Catfish plate) but once the food came out it was well worth it. The portions at M&M are insane. I can't imagine someone finishing ALL the food they give you in one sitting. All the sides are great! The Yams, Greens and Mac & Cheese are my favorite. If you like sweet drinks be sure to try the lemonade/iced tea (mixed together)....its SOOO good. Can't wait for my next trip to SoCal so I can go back.
I absolutely love this place. I must go every time I am in LA, but let me give you some warnings.
#1. Get ready for people to call you lazy. Plan your visit. Do not eat here before planning to work around the house, going to the club, or doing anything productive. After filling your belly with this good eats... YOU WILL BE USELESS. Plan on gooooood sleep after eating.
#2. Do NOT try to eat it all. You will get A LOT, A LOT of food. 3 corn muffins (all to yourself), 3 sides!!! and your meat selection.
#3. Savor the flavor. As mentioned above, do not stuff yourself. You must NOW -N-LATER this food (eat some now save some for later). Ask for a container (in which they will gladly give you), package the goods up for later.
#4. Go early. You can get 2 meals in one. You can eat this for lunch AND dinner and get a full stomach both times.
Additional Info: Prices and the service are good, but the reason you come here is the food. Eat up.... sleep.
I finally know what white people feel like now when they visit SGV or Ktown... totally a fish out of water where eyes are staring at you. My friend had a craving for soul food on a Sunday afternoon so we decided to drive to M&M Soul Food, which has been known to have some of the best soul food this side of the Mississippi.
Well, let me tell you, after fighting insane traffic on Crenshaw and giving me nostalgia from the movie Love & Basketball (one of the greatest movies ever) we entered through the screen door to this authentic looking place.
We were greeted with water and when I ordered my tea, I should have known it was going to be brown sugar water. It was so sweet that I had to dilute the thing 10 times just so I wouldn't die from drinking all that sugar. After a long wait for our waitress that had her bottom button open exposing all her love for M&Ms (but I don't think she realized it) we finally got our orders in. Greeted us first was the best fresh warm out of the oven cornbread muffins with soft butter. Seriously, some of the best bread ever. Even if it came out of the box of Jiffy at Ralph's, I don't care. The butter was nice and soft and melted on soaking through. It was heavenly with my brown sugar water.
Next came the 4 pounds of food. Let me tell you, they don't skimp on portions at all. Look out Cheesecake Factory, I think M&Ms beats you in portions. I ordered the Beef & Dressing platter that came with 3 side items. The beef was more like 4 potions worth... a mountain of tender delicious beef smothered in brown gravy.
The Mac n Cheese was also some of the best I have ever had in my life- not overly cheesy and not boogie with all these french cheeses that I can't pronounce. It was just good ole fashioned mac and cheese the way it should be.
The greens were also delicious. Nicely seasoned, tender and great.
The mashed potatoes were nice and fresh, also delicious.
My friend got the smothered chicken that was the size of a 1/2 fried chicken, red beans and rice, greens, and yams. The yams look like baby food but again, about 50 lbs of sugar and butter in those bad boys. Only eating about 1/3 of my meal, I packed the rest to go and ate it for dinner. Let me tell you, although the prices for a platter may run you $13-16, it's seriously enough food for a family of 3.
Warning- if you are calorie counting, I would for sure skip this place. It's definitely an indulgent meal high in calories, sugar and fat, but hey, once in a while is fine right? Also, don't plan on eating for a while after a meal here. It's been 24 Horus since my trip to M&Ms and I'm still not hungry.
Minus 1 star for that damn brown sugar water and the peep show of the waitress' belly. Not attractive.
After my first time going to M&M this past New Year's Day, I would suggest 2 things...1) Don't go there if you're not hungry or you don't like leftovers because you get a TON of food and 2) Go early because when we went they were out of some things.
Hungry on New Year's Day, so where to eat? A few places we thought of first ended up being closed, so we remembered M&M being a place that we wanted to try. They're open, it's on! We met up around 5 or so and got a table right away. The dining area wasn't too crowded, but there were a bunch of people getting take out. Not sure if they do that big a take out business normally or if it was because of the holiday, but there were more people getting take out than eating there. One look at the menu and I knew what I wanted...catfish! Catfish at a soul food restaurant has to be good! Sadly, my heart was broken. Our server told us they were out of catfish, as well as red snapper, pork chops, short ribs and oxtail. Basically, all they had left were the chicken dishes, turkey wings, liver & onions and meatloaf. Not sure if this is a normal thing to run out of some of the food later in the day, but I don't see that complaint in other reviews so maybe they had just been unusually busy that day. Ok then, fried chicken it is. Can't go wrong with fried chicken. Along with your main course, you get 3 sides. They have collared greens, red beans, string beans, mac & cheese, succotash, potato salad, yams, cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes, black-eyed peas, rice & gravy, buttered corn or cabbage. I chose mac & cheese, cornbread dressing and string beans.
After we ordered, we got some cornbread (2 pieces each). The cornbread was really good, even better after putting some honey on it. After a short wait we got our sides. Now, since we each got 3 sides, I was expecting we would get a little bit of each one. Ummmm...no. The amount you would probably get of one side at a normal restaurant, we got that much of each one! The sides came on their own dinner plate and filled it up. Wow, just the plate of sides was a meal in itself. Then she brought the chicken. I got all white meat, so I got a breast and two wings. The wings were normal size, but the breast was HUGE! *Refraining from making joke here* No kidding, it was probably the biggest chicken breast I've ever seen. The chicken this came from must have been a monster! Anyway, we dug in and everything was great. The chicken was tender and juicy, even better with some Red Rooster hot sauce splashed on. The sides were very good too, but soooo filling! I got through all of the string beans, most of the mac & cheese, about half of the cornbread dressing, the two wings and about half of the chicken breast. The rest was boxed up and made a great lunch the next day.
Suggestion #3 above should be don't plan anything active afterwards, because you will not want to do anything but lay around like a sloth after eating here. All in all, great food, huge portions, good service and a very satisfying meal!
Good chicken, surprisingly not very greasy.
Also surprisingly yummy are: Rice and gravy, the mix veggie stew, and yam (sweet, the perfect dessert).
Big portion.
A meal at M&M guarantee food coma afterward.
Cornbread is delicious...and I pour honey all over mine!
Fried chicken is ok. Meatloaf tastes like cat food! How do I know? Ok...it just feels like the stuff I would scrape out for my cat, but it's bland and reheated when served.
I do like the rice and beans. No mashed potato on the weekends!!!??? Decent...just decent.
Ok so after hearing what a wonderful place this was, i had to find out for my self! My fiance and i went here last minute on a trip to LA.
Ok so the sweet tea wasnt all that great but then again im used to more sugar than tea being from GA. We added one packet of Equal and added lemon and it was good to go
The corn muffins were hot, very hot, not very sweet which is just the way i like it! They have individual servings of Country Crock in a bowl, which is always a plus.
I ordered the fried chicken, white meat of course, and mac-n-cheese, cabbage and black eyed peas. The chicken was fairly good, not as good as a favorite of mine in San Diego. The mac-n-cheese was good, very homeade tasting. The black eyed peas were very good!! Very well seasoned and hot!!! The cabbage was fair i like mine a lil bit more buttery and salty but theirs had a different kick to it!
All in all, i enjoyed it and defiintely had leftovers, 2 wings, all three of my sides and 2 corn muffins. Also they sell 2 corn muffins individually wrapped for .90 by the cash register.
Will definitely go back for more!
Good Soul Food, Inexpensive....
I was in training for 5 months down in Culver City. Found this little place. If you don't know it's there, you'd miss it. Parking is terrible, but that's not really their fault.
Smothered Chicken is gooooood. Their fried catfish is also fantastic. I didn't care for their BBQ ribs.
All their sides are pretty good. My favorites are the Cornbread Dressing and Mac & Cheese. The Yams are a little too sweet for me.
Portions are big. You get your money's worth here.
The food here is great. I had the BBQ chicken with buttered corn and macaroni and cheese as sides. The food temperature was really hot, unlike some restaurants I've been to. The chicken basically fell off the bone, and it was also moist! The buttered corn and mac and cheese were really good, too. This was part of the lunch special, which was $8.99, and you get a lot of food for it. The corn bread muffins that came with the meal were okay.
M&M Soul Food is located in a strip mall, so parking can be a challenge. Fortunately, there is also street parking. If I were in the neighborhood, I would come again.
Isn't it always cool to find a new great place that you cant wait to go to again and try the whole menu? All the while you are casually looking at what all the other diners are eating and how good it all looks.
Was going home and had M&M on my radar and just happened to pass by. So, went in and perused the menu and got 2 dinners To Go.
Basically,, you order your entree and choose 3 sides.. all of which sound tasty... I chose smothered porkchops w/mac & cheese, greens and corn... got the wife fried chicken w/greens, potato salad and string beans.
Yummy!!!... the pork chops were thick and juicy and the gravy was a bit salty but.. hell i like salt anyway.. the greens , mac & cheese and corn were all great and the wifes fried chicken was crisp and tasty.. although it would have been better had we eaten there... wanna try the catfish and meatloaf next time.... yummy cornbread too...big portions..
and definately not for the salad eating crowd..
nice friendly service.. parking sucks though...
The south teaches you two things: Mind your manners and eat 'till your heart stops. M & M's is the closest thing to southern food in Los Angeles (for the best cajun, check out Harold and Belle's). Aunt Kizzy's gets the gong, striking out miserably on the authenticity scale. Soul food in Marina Del Rey is like Kobe Bryant passing the ball... they just don't go together. Do yourself a favor and drive a bit southbound to Ladera Heights for the real deal.
Go to M & M's for the fish- if you like your catfish or snapper fried hard, this Mississippi-influenced spot will make your taste buds pop. Load up on the cornbread, but make sure not to eat too many before your meal arrives- it fills quick.
What separates a true soul food joint from a fugazi? The sides! Pick three with your grub... I always get the mac n' cheese- as good as Thanksgiving in Georgia, I tell ya. The cooks definitely don't hold back on the collard greens, either. It's like eating a bonsai tree or something (Ah, Daniel-san... always look in eye!). Check out the corn and okra side, if you're feelin' rebellious. I'm definitely partial to the yams too... candied up and aren't too watered down (like an "out of a can" sense).
I tried the smothered fried chicken and wasn't too keen on its salt-factor... it damn near ruined the natural taste of the chicken. My buddy, Marc S., was neutral on the meatloaf too (I even have to admit that Aunt Kizzy's had better meatloaf... their only trump over M & M's).
Make sure to drench everything the true Southern way- with plenty of hot sauce. M & M's - 4 out of 5 clogged arteries!
BUSINESS: RESTAURANT
FARE: SOUL FOOD
Didnt know certain economic backgrounds were scared of M & M Soul Food, thanks for the heads up Master P!
I've been to M & M Soul Food 3 times with in about 3 years. The first time I went because I wanted to get an appetizer, however, they were out of that item. 2 months ago, i went for dessert, however, they were out of cobbler. Finally, within the last month, i went there on an outing for dinner. First and foremost, Soul Food by nature is an extemely fattening food. I dont know what I expected, but I ordered smothered baked chicken, seasoned baked chicken that is lathered with a heavy gravy. Kind of kills the whole baked thing. I also ordered a side of stuffing and macaroni cheese. That sat heavy, i mean, the macaroni was mostly butter and cheese, as well as the stuffing being heavily salted. It was good initially, but quickly afterwards i felt I needed a detox, so I hit the gym and got a Crystal Geyser gallon of water.
The service was quick THIS time, however, like I said they were out of the item that I wanted twice previously. The decor is kind of family style oriented, large tables adorned with picnic print. The bathroom is located directly in the center of the restaurant in the back. So you see who goes in and out (Star subtracted).
I dont really eat Soul Food anymore, but i do like the soups such as gumbo and creole dishes. Thus, M & M Soul Food has a good product for those who can stomach it, literally.
Good comfort food.
I had smothered fried chicken, mac & cheese, and collard greens.
Buddies shared some fried pork chops, bbq chicken and meatloaf.
Big portions along with corn bread and free really sweet iced teas during lunch hours.
I spent ~$10 and didn't finish it all.
I think the cheese is stuck in my ribs still... *a good ouch*
"M&M's is the Truth."
Someone wrote that as his review for this place, and he is so utterly right it's ridiculous. This place is like soul food Mecca, so holy that I can only handle going there once or twice a year.
The first time I ate at M&M, I had just polished off my fried chicken dinner when the waitress came by, announced, "The breast is ready," and proceeded to hand me a new plate with a smothered fried chicken breast the size of a Nerf football on it.
When I make it out to M&M these days, I usually get the fried catfish or the fried pork chops. I think one of the other branches offeres fried sole, which is just divine. I've tried most of the sides, but nothing beats the red beans and rice. Positively denying the existence of vegetarianism, this is the only instance of red beans and rice I've ever experienced that includes both sliced franks and shards of pork bone.
This must be where chicken wings go when they die! Check out my complete story on M&M at http://theeatenpath.co...
I came here on a job really. I've heard about it but I don't like to drive outside of my 5 mile radius so I never been. But hey, my client requested so I'm there.
I ordered my usual southern meal - oxtail, greens, mac and cheese, and yams. Honestly, I think you have to eat the staples of every genre to get a good basis for how the place is. Oxtail was moist and a tad over seasoned but plentiful. It musta been good cuz I finished the whole damn plate. The sides complemented the oxtail well. Fattening but delicious.
The cornbread was too dry for me. I like to make mine with a more cake like texture so it doesn't crumble too easily with gravy.
If you don't like overly sweet lemonade, don't order it. It's like sugar water with a tinge of lemon.
The place looks kinda dingy but the cars outside are baller status. true story.
It's a great little place to get your soul food. Emphasis on little. It's in the middle of a strip mall between Culver City and Ladera Heights. It was the last day of my internship and the people I was working with took me out here for lunch. They told me that they've been going there for years, that the patients that work with them recommend this place. Well I was game. I like me some soul food every once in a while!
I ordered their pork chops at lunch and it was delicious. They also had nice, hot corn bread which smelled good and tasted even better! My tip is to eat them while they are hot otherwise they lose their yummy goodness! They have everything from meat loaf to fried chicken to pork chops and smothered foods too. There's a good variety of dishes all at affordable prices too! And they serve some good iced tea along with your meal at no extra cost!
So if you're looking for some soul food and you're in the neighborhood, come on by. But be ready for a wait or a fight for a parking space as it is small. Happy eating!
Like Roscoe's, this is one of those places I can only hit up 1-2 times a year because the food makes my heart go bum bump, bum bump, bum buuuuuuuump, bum buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuump, bumbumbumbumbumbumbump.
We shared the half/half smothered fried pork chops, smothered fried chicken, smothered steak, potato salad, mac n cheese, string beans, corn bread muffins, and sweet tea. MMmmmMMMMMMmm. Mississippi Mary and Venni Mac know how to cook up a meal. Sho'nuff. Naa'meeean!
Parking can be a pain, but we got some great security from some guy chillin' at 7-11 with a trumpet throwing karate chops as we (Asian-Americans) walked to our cars.
Whenever I'm down to the ground, this place is where I go search for my soul, for my mind, for my being. This is the place to go when it comes to soul food, good old comfort food. The majority of their offerings had never bring me down. I like this place more than Aunt Kizzy's because this place is low key, they keep it real and they keep it right.
I especially like how they give out their hot hot cornbread with butter on the side, compromised with their refreshing sweet ice tea. Together, they're heavenly. It's like getting a hug from mama.
From fried pork chops to fried cat fish, fried chicken to meatloaf, all of their main dishes are hearty and savory. Yams, greens, mac 'n cheese, potato salad, all are great comforting sides.
For as long as I've been in L.A., M&M seems to be my favorite when it comes to soul food. Almost every meal I had there was satisfying, heart warming and delicious. Whether you're searching for your soul, wanting to fill up your tummy, or simply looking for the real southern comfort, this is the place to dine in at. Their food just brings you up.
I just had lunch here and WOW! I knew this place would be good right when I walked in just by the sheer variety of condiments on the table as well as the relaxed yet convivial vibe. We tried the meatloaf and smothered baked chicken. The succotash side was awesome and their sweet tea (free before 2pm on weekdays) and the cornbread they give you as soon as you order that you can smother with honey that's already on the table and boy, i can go on and on about this place. I also love how it's nestled within this unassuming little strip mall, but inside is this happening little place. I took my friend who I like to call "Mr LA" cuz he knows almost everything about this town and even he had never been to this place, but was impressed by it!
Thanks yelp for another great find!!!
Smothered chicken, rice and gravy, dressing and cabbage. There's nothing better! And the gumbo on the weekends....shut yo mouth! I've been a fan of M&M's for years. I've been to almost every location including the one in Vegas, which I think is closed now.
The parking at the Cenitnela location is awful, the lines can be annoying but it is all worth it. Another favorite, the fried catfish,
I suggest you NOT go on the weekend if you can help it. I love the fact that if you sit at the tables in the middle of the room you can find yourself sitting next to perfect strangers. But at that moment you share a common bond - a love for good old soul fool. Hallelujah!
This place serves Kool Aid. How cool is that?
That's all I've got really.
Bird poop on your newly washed car?
Bird poop on your head?
Got in a fight with that special someone?
Well... forget chicken soup for the soul... you need some Fried Chicken!
If you find yourself in the need for some good old comfort food... this is the place for you...
Knowing very well that they close at 9pm, we get there at 8:45 to see all the workers watching the door intently... just waiting to lock it... Well we make it in the knick of time for a take out order and get a dark meat chicken entree with mac and cheese, buttered corn, mashed potatoes, and a chicken wing entree with mac and cheese, buttered corn, collard greens, and a total of 10 cornbread muffins... everything was great except i found the mac and cheese to be a bit bland, although very thick and hearty, and the gravy for the mashed potatoes was a bit salty and sour... perhaps it would be better piping hot...
Well... suffice to say we filled ourselves to the ear with comfort... and more...
Let me start this review by getting something off my chest; in my humble opinion; Soul Food is perhaps one of the best cuisines that Western dining has to offer! You may scoff and quip about the amount of lard and the not so choice cuts of meat, but all this brings out some of the most original flavors. Like the Rhythm and Blues that surround it, this cooking was born out of oppression and segregation and has become iconic of a culture. A culture unique to our soil and a true American treasure! That said Mississippi Marry's makes some mean catfish, just like my Granny's. Their sides are some of the best I've had this side of the continent. You can taste the Ham hock in their black-eyed peas.
This place was delicious (though some people I know would beg to differ). I got the fried catfish with collared greens, mac n cheese, and mashed potatoes (I should have gotten the buttered corn/cole slaw instead). I'm not going to say it wasn't pricey.. but this thing fed me for at least 3 meals!
If you go, definitely, definitely get the buttered corn and cole slaw
