Reading through all of the other reviews makes me absolutely cringe.  My specific experience gets 4 stars as I saw this store as a place to buy trim and buttons and I am not super price sensitive.  I'm yelper, though so it's not like it's fun to get fleeced.  That said, I'm only able to shop for stuff on the weekends when most of the other stores are closed.

There are are a few places that are open on Saturdays for cloth and carry limited selections on trims.  They are definitely cheaper.  if you're like me, can't show up in the fashion district except on weekends, and are looking to make-over a piece of clothing rather than toss or donate it, then this is your spot.

If you need a seamstress, I would probably get stuff here and then take it to someone else on my Fix, Mend, Sew list.

The selection of buttons and trims is excellent.  This is probably the most organized, approachable, and well presented fabric store I've been to, with the exception of the bridal area which does seem a bit hoity-toity.  That I would skip.

I found the service to be quite helpful.  There is one tinier hispanic girl, who is amazingly patient with me as I ask her 1001 questions on how she thinks something will look.  I really should learn her name, because she is so friendly in remembering my various projects and asking about how they look.

Aside from buttons, you can get stuff to fix your belt with, various ribbon for arts and crafts or for sewing, tassels for curtains, random fringes of rossettes, feathers, rhinestones, pearls, etc.  I even found a hook to replace on my purse.  They have everything but cloth. It's pretty awesome.

Oh, and currently, Yelpers get 10% off for checking in as long as it's under $100 Weird, since you could always just have them charge you twice, but not docking them anything for it.

As for folks that have complained ordering on phone or online, I can totally see that happening.  This place is extremely busy.  The poor manager is constantly being asked questions. I've seen poor store attendants try hard to get his attention for the phone only to put people on hold. They probably need to figure out a better system.  I would definitely go into the store if I had an issue.  They just don't have their on-line or phone business set up properly as of yet.

They aren't super cheap, so I doc them 1 star.  That said, they are my favorite so far to go to regularly and if you care more about unique then price, it's totally worth it to stop by.

    "#DuhTrimming!!"

Nothing to hide here folks, this place is definitely all about trimmings.  Buttons, lace, piping, snaps, fringe, feathers...you name it...they have it.

Literally floor to ceiling trimming options.  Plenty of staff on hand to help you.  Like, literally, there was upwards of 16+ people on staff.

Although they didn't have what I was looking for, the service was very pleasant and the associate who helped me asked multiple people to ensure that he was thorough in his response that they indeed did not carry the item seeked out.

This is a big place with all sorts of trim. I remember when it was just a tiny store but over the years, it has grown to a behemoth. The prices in here are kind of pricey but they have everything you can imagine in trim under one roof from ribbons to tassels, to fringe and beads, from flowers and feathers and pins, to buttons and bows.
I find their swarovski crystals here a pretty decent price.

The staff is helpful at times but you should have a keen eye when shopping here as with some other reviewers have noted that you should watch what they give you to make sure that it hasn't been opened or cut before and taped back together to look new.

If you are on a budget, check out Daytona Trim in the heart of the Fashion District.

yes, everything they sell here is beautiful, but the prices are crazy high and today i got my trimmings home and saw that one of them (which was $20 for a yard) had ripped and been taped back together in the middle of my piece. i took the tape off, because obviously i'm not going to sew the tape on to anything, and the whole fabric ripped apart. so now i have 1.5 ft and 1.5 ft, which is NOT what i need or what i paid for. it's partially my fault for not watching but you should have to watch your back cause mean employees are always trying to scam you!!!!

    thanks for nothing m&j trimming!

I will echo everyone else's sentiments - M&J has everything you could need for trimming needs. I spent over an hour deciding which purple ribbon would be perfect to decorate my friends wedding cake because there was that much choice. Everything is neatly organized, but yes, it is slightly pricier than other places; however, sometimes you can't find some of the stuff M&J has anywhere else. Staff is brusque but not snobby, and efficient.

All the trimming you can ever imagine, it is here. Super organized, super clean and staff everywhere to help you out.

Value wise, some things you can find at a better price online but then you'll have to wait & pay for shipping....

This is the go to store of the fashion industry for all sorts of trimmings.

If you need something and don't have a lot of time to hunt around for a good price, or can't find it anywhere else, this is the place for you!

Prices are steep and the store is usually jam packed. It can also be difficult to get help because the designers who work in the neighborhood tend to hog the sales staff.

Though I know I can get what I need here if all else fails and that it will be of good quality, I kind of dread going into this place because even though the staff are helpful, it's always a headache to navigate the store and battle for their attention. Which, by the way, you have to do because nothing is out for the public to help themselves to. Everything is affixed to the walls and you have to ask someone to get whatever it is that you need.

This place really does have a selection of everything: buckles, zippers, ribbon, snaps, Swarovski crystals, feathers, iron-ons, etc, etc, etc.

Need trimmings and other sewing notions?  Of course not, no one does.  At least if you're not in the costume design business or a professional seamstress ;-)  But M&J has many things you never thought you needed before, many of them covered in sequins or beads or lace, and what could be more fun than that to look at for 1/2 an hour?

Staff reasonably friendly, given that they have to pull small boxes full of strange small objects off the shelves endlessly for tiresome lookers like me.

I dare you not to buy something.  It's really hard.

This was my first time in this store mainly in part because im not a arts and crafts kind of guy. I was looking for buttons for one of my suits and after some goggling I found it. I was greeted by an associate when I came in and since I work in retail I know how important that is. She pointed me in the direction of the buttons where there was another worker waiting there to assist me. They had a very limited selection of buttons for what I was looking for, but for more feminine clothing they had a huge variety. I wouldn't recommend it to a man looking for buttons specifically but I would recommend it to anyone else that needed to get a button or other fabrics and materials other than those you would use on a traditional suit for a male.

This is trimming heaven. You will find tons of trimmings here. The cost is well, the price. It is a bit expensive for the trimmings but they do have a wide selection. I really love this store when it comes to shopping for the best trims for my custom outfits.

Everything is very organized and finding something is not difficult at all.  They also sell swarovski rhinestones and I believe they take commission if you want them to fancy up your phone, shoe, wallet, etc. with rhinestones. The staff is very helpful but ultimately you have to decide what you want.

These are one of those places where you got to look around for hours if you want to see everything unless you go in there knowing exactly what you want.

This review is for their online store.

Avoid at all costs. I ordered a few buttons to replace on my suit for my wedding. When they came in the buttons were a completely different size from my order. I tried to contact them several times via email and phone to resolve this over the course of a week and a half. I couldn't get anyone to call me back or answer their phones.

Their customer service is absolutely terrible. The shipping took FOREVER to get here, and I never once even got notice that it did ship.

I ended up evoking PayPal's dispute system to get my money back. I won't ever buy from this company again.

Is it just me or do others hear a choir of angels when they step inside this store? I suppose that is a bit of an over-statement, but M&J Trimming does seem a little bit like button heaven.

I'm not sure if my desire to visit this store had more to do with its mention on Project Runway or my slight obsession with having a decent button collection. Every gal who sews and knits needs an interesting button collection, though. I was impressed with the selection because it far surpassed that of any fabric or yarn shop I have previously visited. They stock all manner of buttons in all manner of materials: leather, metal, wood, glass, shell, plastic, etc. They have a rainbow of colors and sizes of buttons as well and the selection is extremely well organized. I was (unpleasantly) astonished with how expensive some of the stock is. It just seems wrong to think of spending $3 or more dollars for ONE tiny item. I found the staff to be really helpful and courteous despite the fact that I had them running up and down the shop tallying my purchase for me.

There are many, many other "trim" and notion stores in the fashion district, but M&J actually looks friendly and inviting. The store is spacious, clean, and bright. I've popped into other, hole-in-the-wall places and felt oddly uncomfortable, been pressured to buy merchandise I neither wanted nor needed, or just simply could not find what I was looking for because of a complete lack of organization.

I really like this store, but my wallet does not. M&J will probably fall into the category of stores that I only visit when in NYC because, well, it's NYC and spending money seems to be built into the trip.

A great place for browsing and get ideas for dancing costumes or items for coats and belts.

I love this shop, it has everything.  The ultra-high ceilings and good lighting make this a pleasant place to spend some time, and the organization makes it a functional place to shop.  They have an amazing ribbon selection, and quite a lot of feather trims.

My only beef with this place is that the prices are too high.  You can find most of this stuff with some searching on the internet at much lower prices (sometimes 2X-3X less).  But, in keeping with many of the other reviews, that's what you get with a famous shop in an amazing location.

They have a great system for ringing up your purchases, you get a bag with a barcode.  So instead of having to carry around a slip of paper with your items written on it, it is all recorded electronically and the sales clerk just scans your bag's barcode.  The downside is a higher likelihood of sticker shock when you do manage to wrest your self from the shelves and pay.  And then it's too late to change your mind, as your items are considered purchased at the time of cutting.

Being a newbie to sewing and such, I am also still not totally sure of the protocols in the shops.  So, I am too afraid to actually approach the bridal trims section.  I desperately want to go in, but I am irrationally afraid that you have to have an appointment (like everywhere else in the bridal industry)!

    Was this review …?

I have been going here for years. If its on the corporate card, I buy my samples here. If its on MY card, I don't even dream of setting foot in this place!

They have an AMAZING selection of buttons, trims, feathers, fringe, ribbon, stones, and beading and enything you can need for trim in every fabrication BUT its SERIOUSLY overpriced. Like ridiculously, zomg, pwned, overpriced.

If you have money to burn and an hour deadline, come here to fix your problems at a steep price. But if you have the time to shop around, check out pacific trimming and B&Q (next door to eachother on 38th/7th ave) for half the price.

    what a rip off.

AMAZING. They had EXACTLY what I needed. I came directly after work to get a length of ribbon and a length of sequin trim for my Halloween costume. It was crowded, of course, since it is close to Halloween, but I found EXACTLY what I was looking for. There is an enormous selection, and I can't wait to come back when I have more time to just browse. I spent $10 for my 2 yards of trim, but it was exactly what I needed.

They also had lots of buttons and appliques. Aside for the regular and cutesy appliques, there were the kinds you can use to make a police officer or military costume -- really complicated, accurate, and complex!! There were also the iron on "rhinestone" or "crystal" appliques that spell out words, or form images such as skulls, etc. VERY COOL.

I'll definitely come back when it is time for my next costume project!

Some day when I have a huge loft and tons of space for sewing, I shall have walls of trims organized by product type, size and color just like at M & J.  My space will have a library ladder though.  SO much more fun.

It really is heavenly in here if you are at all magically inclined (and by magically I mean design).

The prices, though, are shockingly expensive.  18 bones for a single fake flower on a pin?  Umm, no thank you.  I think I'll just make my own with $4 of royal blue satin 1.5" ribbon from your ribbon wall.

Only in NYC would I have to go to a specialty shop to buy thread. I miss Joann Fabric and Craft Stores. It's a good thing M&J Trimming is conveniently located in the heart of the Garment District and just a few blocks from the convenient 34th street subway stop.

M&J Trimming is really a specialized store for ribbons, buttons, crystals, trims, etc. They sell basic crafting supplies like silicone glue, glue guns, needles, rulers, etc. They offer classes. They have samples of designs you can create using their products. If you used to bedazzle, this is the place for you. While crystalized jeans and rhinestoned cell phones may be a thing of the past, M&J Trimming will still inspire you to jazz up your creations. I walked out with the three spools of thread I needed to hem my pants. One is the wrong color, so I'll be back in a few weeks to do some more shopping.

Prices can vary. I recommend coming here only on a need basis. A lot of designers come to M&J Trimming during the day to buy supplies and the place can be a zoo. But the colors and options are endless and they have a station for everything.

Mj trim has the greatest selection of trim, ribbon, buttons, feathers and appliques anywhere around. Michael's doesn't even come close to the selection here.

Be sure to check out their Venetian lace trim. They have an amazing variety of black and white laces of different thickness and patterns.

Also, they have a small bridal selection that can help you with a veil.

A very cool place - with every type of button imaginable. Luckily, the button I needed was very simple, thus towards the front of the store. To be honest I was a little scared of what the back held!

The selection is absolutely impressive, and the prices seemed reasonable, but the service left something to be desired, which is why I'm subtracting one star.

Most trim shops on not on trend, and you will often have to make your own trimmings to create mood boards or garments to represent what is currently happening on the runway.  However, with M & J trims everything is very current and they even have trim boards representing the latest runway shows or color palettes.

The prices are a little higher than most places and they are always slammed with customers, but that is the price you pay for an open, clean atmosphere and quality trims.  All cut items are sold by the yard only, unless they are over $20.00 and you can purchase a foot.

I mainly go here for appliqués and buttons, since they have a selection of items that are more unique than most.  That is why I come here to visit every time I am in New York.

This is one of those stores that makes living in NYC so great. Walls and walls of trims and buttons to choose from, and way lower in price than if you bought them from knitting stores or button shops. I get almost all my buttons for my projects there, and have bought other trims like ribbons and hook and eye tape from them, too.

Sometimes the staff isn't attentive but if you ask for help you always get it. Watch out for them charging tax on non-taxable items like buttons, if you're going to use it for a sweater bring a piece of your sweater with you and insist that there is no sales tax on buttons for wearable items!

M & J has been around for years. The building burnt down a few tears back enabling them to rebuild a bigger, more well organized store.
One section has buttons, another trims, beads, fringe etc.

Beware that prices can run a little steep and you may be able to get a deal in bulk if you open a business account for wholesale buying.

My lord, words cannot express how much I love M&J Trimming.  I came here near daily when doing a bitch fashion internship under the guise of a legal/business internship during law school, and literally get inspired by everything in this place!

Now that I'm back in San Francisco, M&J is one of the few trimmings stores with a GREAT online site.  Obviously matching trimmings via the internet is still nearly impossible, BUT I still have ordered from M&J online about a gazillion times in the last year.

Moving back to NY and plan to come here near daily. Literally, if you like design, there are infinite things here to inspire different pieces.  And I LOVE their swarovski sew on collection.

Only negative thought-the Heavy Ostrich Fringe.  Super expensive, turned out to be WAY more brown than the website demonstrated, and single handedly pretty much screwed me over last fall. Another reason why visiting in person is incomparable.

    Meh.
Too expensive. For hardly anything I always end up spending 30 bucks. (i.e. two buttons, a few inches of ribbon, and a packet of beads.)
    Too many plastic buttons.
Not enough old-school buttons made of materials other than plastic and thin metal.
    Disappointed.

***Note: This review is solely for their bridal section!***

No bride should ever set foot into this place, based on the horrifyingly stressful experience I had here.  And I wasn't even the bride.

    (However, to be fair:
    1. if you're simply purchasing an already made item OR
    2. have the pleasure of working with a different sales lady other than Lori, I think is her name, your experience may be different.)

Saks had sent us here to have a custom veil made.  Saks should NEVER recommend M&J's bridal section for custom veils.  It looks bad for Saks, sending brides who have spent a tremendous amount of money on their gown.

The product is fine.  It's what you would expect.  However, it's the huge lack of professionalism and customer service that makes this place a hell hole.  No bride should have to experience this kind of emotional distress.

We came here to have a very simple veil made, I promise you it was simple, it's just that it had to be a specific length for the dress thus custom.  We also requested that the hair comb be assembled slightly different.  Still, nothing complicated, and as a designer/sewer myself, I can vouch that it was so simple I could have done it myself.

Her response entailed phrases such as:
    "No I won't do it."
"Trust me, you won't like it."
    "It won't look good."
"I have x years of experience, I've worked at so and so, (continues to list her resume...I can tell you it won't work."
    "You're making a mistake."

...and so on.  This conversation goes on for over an hour.  Not fully understanding why OUR CUSTOM veil cannot be made to our request.  Imagine this same conversation back and forth for an hour.  The frustration is unbearable.  We even patiently explain that we will pay the full amount up front, and if necessary write a letter explaining that whatever the outcome of the veil, we take full responsibility for the result.

If Saks did not recommend this place, I would have walked out.  Where else are we supposed to go?

She even had the nerve to say, "Hmm, let me find you one of the CHEAPER veils to show you what your veil would look like...Oh, I don't have one."

Trust me when I say this dress, the wedding, the 5-star int'l resort location had nothing cheap.  It was tasteful and elegant, and if anything perfectly simple.

Long story short, the bride understandably requests to speak to the owner, since Lori cannot give us full confidence that even if she makes the veil she will even write down the info correctly and convey the right message.  The owner okays the veil in less than 5min, agrees that it's simple, and we have our veil request completed!

    *

If you're not already sick of reading this lengthy experience, it doesn't end here.  We go pick up the veil.  Even discussing that human nature cannot be so cruel as to make someone so disturbed that she would sabotage the order, right?

Lori is not there, but the veil is.  And guess what, it's too short!  About 5" too short.  And it's 2 days before the final dress fitting, and off to the airport for the wedding.  The bride gets on the phone with Lori, who as expected, was incredibly rude.  She actually says, "I don't have to be polite to you."

Nothing is done to correct the mistake.  Except more arguing, self-aggrandizing speeches, and more insults.  It's one thing if it was made as requested and was ugly, but if it doesn't even meet the basic requirement, length!?  We end up BUYING another veil (with a slight discount, still, money was not the issue but the stress).

I have never experienced such a scarring experience.  It was exhausting, beyond frustrating, immensely insulting at times, and simply horrifying.  She should definitely not work in the service industry, let alone bridal.  M&J should not employ someone so extremely emotionally unbalanced.  I have many friends with up-coming weddings and will warn them all of this experience.

If you must go, request that you don't work with Lori or go on a day she is not there.  I'm sorry to write such an attacking review, even naming names, but no one should ever have to experience this.

This place has pretty much anything and everything you are looking for, but this place breaks the bank!

If there is something specific you are looking for in the trim or button department definitely check this place out, otherwise I recommend scavenging China Town and thrift shops for affordable stuff. Additionally there are so many tourists at this place, and you have to battle the midtown tourist gang bang to get here, its just not worth it.

If you've been here you probably won't believe that they didn't have the one thing I needed... they have everything else!

It was really fun to browse the store but the sales people are unfriendly.  Good place for inspiration.

Evil, yes this place is evil! Loaded from floor to ceiling with every conceivable button, bead, trim, crystal, ancillary objects (glue, scissors) that will make your head spin and your wallet empty.

I adore this place, obviously, and every time I go in this shop, I get an incredible urge to create things. My only problem is that I am a klutz. So I go in rarely and grab things I need like fabric glue, snaps etc.,

I just like to walk in there and look around; it's like a gorgeously appointed museum where you can buy the art.

This place is like the "Charlie and the Cholate Factory" of buttons and trimmings. I was oohing and aahing the entire time. If you need to find a button, you can probably find it here.

All I wanted to do was replace two buttons on my coat, but wound up plopping down $45 for eight shiny, sparkly buttons. It was hard not to resist.

I'd give it another star if their rhinestone collection was better. I was looking for pointed-back rhinestones (not the sew-on kind), but had difficulty finding them.

This is the cleanest funnest and most complete of this type of store, but it is not the least expensive. There are alot of trim stores deep inside the garment district, but you have to know what you are looking for when you go hunting for it. This is an easy breezy shopping experience that actually at this point feels spacious and virtually suburban in contrast. I love this place!

I didn't know what I wanted to do to an old vintage hat I bought but I new I would find the answer at M&J.

I love M&J because you can walk in and just start looking around and inspiration really is all around.  If you get stuck hope that Atyia Seck is there because she knows what is in the store and she is wonderful at pointing out what you may not have noticed.

There may be cheaper trim stores but M&J is bright, open, organized and I find the staff helpful.  I walked in with an old beat up hat and walked out with the makings of a fashion forward masterpiece in my bag.  If you are a crafter or just want to play or actually just want to be surrounded by color, beads, bows and feathers it is worth the time.

I'm not sure how I forgot to review this place after falling in love with it this past fall.  I don't sew anymore (no space in my tiny condo) but I do a lot of crafting - particularly jewelry making.  I use a lot of buttons in my projects and wish there were someplace like this in Chicago.

They have an amazing selection of buttons and trimmmings and I think that everything is pretty well organized.  Not only did I find some pretty buttons and some cute/funny buttons (a cat wearing a fedora, AWESOME) for crafting, but I purchased replacement buttons for my winter coat.  I brought them back to Chicago and even my tailor fell in love with them.

I also purchased some great silk chord and lace trim.  I spent a lot of time just looking, too.  The place was packed even at 2:00 on a weekday but I was able to get waht I wanted, what I needed, and then some.

If you like glitz and glam this is the spot.  A bit pricey compared to what you can find in the area but M&J has been around a long time.  I come here to buy rhinestones but they have everything from buttons to appliques.  The website even has a blog, right now they have "do it yourself satin ribbon hairband" which is pretty cool if you are crafty.

Walking in this store is a great way to get inspired.  There are so many pretty sparkly things everywhere!  I think it is very well organized and shopable.  I've never had a bad experience but I make sure to go after work and not on weekends.

M&J is large, airy, spacious... the first time I walked in I thought it was the best candy store ever. Then I quickly realized that all the pretty things cost a little more than those dingy places. BE AWARE - once it's cut, you pretty much have to buy it. I accidentally got $40 worth of lace. Woops. It is the best damn black Italian art-deco style lace you've ever seen though...

Their button supply could be larger, and if you're looking for some basic notions like bias tape, not the best place to look. If what you want is great trimmings and you're willing to spend slightly more, definitely the place to go.

I don't even use trimmings or buttons in my work, but I love coming here when I'm in the area, just to experience the fact that these ribbons and buttons EXIST.

Who would imagine that anyone had bothered to design/manufacture a ribbon with chickens dancing on it, much less 5 or 6 other ribbon designs featuring chickens?

I did come here looking for reflective tape for a project for a bicyclist friend, but they didn't have any (I later found it at a random fabric shop several blocks away).  So this place isn't perfect.  But if you're looking for something specific I'd recommend that you stop here first anyway.  Not only are there just reels upon reels of ribbons along the walls and a stunning variety of wonderful buttons in the other section of the store, the salespeople are helpful and M&J is just an attractive store to explore.
