Fantastic Brunch!!! If you're looking for a quality, affordable, local, and friendly place in the GrandLake area, this should be a top brunch choice.
We had the whole wheat pancake and the vegetarian omelet. Both were very well made and enjoyable - to some brunch is standard food tossed on the grill, but L&L is definitely a step above.
It's a simple place with about 10 tables - perhaps not fancy enough for a date, but the food, location, and price is terrific. Sidenote - i'm a bit of a coffee snob and the coffee here was terrific!
Will certainly return more often... Thanks! -

WHY DO PEOPLE LOVE THIS PLACE? I am so confused.
The dishes were overpriced, and not that good. I had the famous Huevos and was like, wtf? I thought this was supposed to blow my mind (mind was blown with CONFUSION)
Service was abysmal.
My really nice/kind boyfriend agreed, and he hardly has anything bad to say about anyone/anything. We came here due to the high reviews, but will not be coming back. -

Ambiance: The indoor seating is a bit crowded, but similar to most American diners during brunch time on a weekend. I preferred the outdoor seating area on the rooftop. Very casual. Nice smiley staff.
Food:
1. Huevos Rancheros- my friend who lives in Oakland comes here regularly for this dish.
2. Italian Fritatta with italian sausage- I was glad I ordered this as I wanted a decent portion of vegetables. It didn't feel too heavy and the sausage was tasty. Decent portion.
3. Avocado salad- Decent size and taste. -

Love eating here! The Eggs Benedict is goooooood! They have an outside eating area. The only drawback to this place is parking. Only reason for the 4 stars. Other than that, I would of given 5. This place will always be an option for breakfast.

Nice little place, was glad to find them open on New Years Day. Eggs Benedict are always good, did not note anything particularly unusual about the menu.

It's the bud of a flower which makes my experience at Lynn & Lu's Escapade Café an enjoyable one. The typical acidic taste of this bud is lost in the cooking process and replaced with a creamy texture similar to avocado with a hint of green. The combination works surprising well with the hollandaise sauce and the poached eggs (which look like cream puffs). The incorporation of artichokes into Eggs Benedict is a must if you eat, have a pulse, drink water and/or breathe air. Artichokes are serious underrated vegetables which can be transformed and made to please the large spectrum of taste buds we've been given. If you are in love with Artichokes (as I am) and would like to know more about its awesomeness check out wiki's info.
Walls
Have you ever been to the little cafes of Amsterdam in which you could sit back and smoke "tobacco"? The cafes are usually housed in old buildings with high ceilings and chipping walls. The tables tend to be small, the room cold and the view none existing. No? Me neither... but I have seen many French films (Amélie & The Professional) to know what I'm talking about. In Paris (& Amsterdam) I would be known as a spécialiste. Lynn & Lu's Escapade Café has the feeling I described above. The walls tend to be covered in local art that is usually bad, not framed and tagged for sell with post-its. I get that we must support local artists, but let's only support good art that enhances the ambiance. I say "good" art because I took an art history class at Laney eight years ago and...I know art.
Fin
I return to this café because the food is good, affordable, the service is quick and the staff is attentive. You should check it out.

more like a diner than a cafe
Got the job done and fast.
Breakfast all day = extra star
Huevos Rancheros = bonus round
Huevos were amazing. Tastiest beans and most generous avocado serving I've received yet. Breakfast potatoes, so good.
Tuna melt (open face) - flavorful but bread a little soggy. Side salad swimming in oil & vinegar.
3:30 PM Sunday lunch for 2 under 20 bucks = we have a winner -

It is as you would expect. A diner. Had the pancakes and they were yummy. The sausage is Italian and not breakfast.
Overall - It's a decent cheap breakfast spot. Vegan options are available if you are into that.
Breakfast all day is a highlight. -

The food at Lynn and Lu's earns five stars: it's fresh, filling, and more flavorful than your average American diner food.
The scrambled eggs, bacon, and pancakes I ordered were cooked to perfection, but the true star of the meal was the blueberry pancake sauce -- I swear they put drugs in it because I have no other way of accounting for how incredibly tasty it is!
Coffee gets refilled automatically for free as one would expect. Service is relatively efficient and quick, despite how busy they can be....
Which brings me to my final point: I can't give Lynn and Lu's a perfect rating because there is simply too long of a wait on weekends. While I would agree with the statement, "it's worth the wait," I'm too hungover or grumpy on most mornings to have to deal with a line. Also, seating is a bit cramped and I feel rushed to get out when I'm finished eating (I should mention that the waitstaff did not rush me, it's just the general atmosphere of the place that gives me this impression).
While I prefer a more relaxed atmosphere at diners, the phenomenal quality of food that Lynn and Lu's offers makes it a great place for a special occasion. -

One of my favorites breakfast or brunch places to go. I always get the eggs escapade with potatoes w/sour cream on the side and the hubby gets the eggs benedict he says it the best he's ever had. Patio area is a wonderful area to enjoy your food when the weather is nice. Great place to eat!

Lynn & Lu's has just a few tables downstair in this converted house. the stairs leads to the patio where there is more seating. menu is short and pricing lingers around 7.95-8.95 for the egg items.
happened to walk in when they were clearing a table and scored a table instantly. yep, they, 2 people, one wiped and one carried the dishes away.
eats: "willie" omlette (7.95)
-3 eggs with chicken sausage, green onions, and provolone cheese
green onions nice touch, more flavorful, crunchy and less bulky than white onions
-large cubed home fries: nice, not soggy, not burnt
-4 halves wheat toast with margaine and butter, didn't see jam. didn't care
coffee(1.65)
-initally a little harsh but cream and sugar cured that
-coffee way better than average.
leftovers:
-omlette came out in about 5 minutes.
-relatively inexpensive, not a mountain of food, enough to be filing.
-entir+e parties must be present to be seated.
-sunday parking is easier and cheaper than weekdays.
-nothing awesome here. everything's done right.
-would return here as a fall back option.Listed in: breakfast

One of thee best Egg Benedict I've ever had!!
I actually had the one with avocado and tomato. The English muffin was crispy yet soft and chewy (just the way I love it!) and the tomato slices and avocado were very fresh. They give you a whole avocado as well... so definitely not skimpy on ingredients. The eggs were poached to perfection and hollandaise was great. I'm definitely a fan of this place, and plan on coming back for more!
On another occasion, I ordered the Eggs Benedict with Mushrooms and spinach, and although it was good, I didn't quite enjoy it as much as the one with Avocado and tomato.
My friend who wasn't in the brunchy mood, ordered the Santa Fe chicken sandwich and said that it was super dry! So, I'd probably only recommend going here for breakfast/brunch. -

Lynn & Lu's is a favorite spot for me. I love their Eggs a' la Justin! (Eggs Benedict with avocado instead of meat). They have homemade muffins & coffee cake. Really quick service. Patio in the back. Long wait, at times... But, I don't fault them for that, because they have brought on more staff to deal with the volume. When you''re in... you're good.

Nice little restaurant for breakfasts at a moderate price. Their coffee is strong and the staff is quite nice and attentive. The Eggs Benedict w/ lox changed my entire view on lox and its uses in the breakfast world.

O M F G, I love this place. I love breakfast at noon and bacon and eggs. I also love coffee with lots of sugar and cream and I LOVE home fries and sour cream. This place has all of this and then some. I think it is safe to say Escapades is "all that and a bag of home fries!"
The staff is extremely responsive and even anticipates what one will be needing. Your coffee and water cup will never be empty. They won't bug you but will appear spontaneously when you need something. They are like little jedi-servers.
The food is off the hook. At other places home-fries are usually at least so-so, it's hard to screw up fried potatoes with seasoning. Escapade's home-fries are tender, savory and all-around delish. Their omelets are good, their eggs benedict are good and they always have specials. NOM NOM NOM!
The restaurant ambiance is excellent. The place is hip, comfortable and friendly.
I got shti to do so I can't keep ranting about the Sistine Chapel of breakfast but in closing I highly recommend and will be there on Saturday! -

Sunday was my first time at Lynn & Lu's, and it was my first time having Eggs Benedict. It was fantastic!! It wasn't exactly the Benedict, it was another version with tomato and bacon. I usually eat turkey bacon because I can STAND fatty meat, but it was super delish. The bacon was nice and crispy. The potatoes were good, but could have used a little more seasoning.
I'll speak for my son and say he liked his breakfast(s) as well.... two pancakes with blueberry and maple syrup, a blueberry muffin, potatoes, two strips of bacon and two scrambled eggs. No he does not have a tapeworm!! He's a 6'2" 16 year old football player. He cleaned all his plates and gave them the thumbs up.
Will definitely make this one of my weekend brunch spots. -

Lynn and Lu's was one of my first eating experiences when visiting Oakland, before I eventually moved to Oakland. It was also the first place I ate when I moved, so Lynn and Lu's has this strange function as a constant in my life. Anyway, onto the review.
I love Lynn and Lu's. It's exactly what I want out of a breakfast restaurant - small, homey, no frills. The staff is great. They're always friendly and never leave me thirsty. The food is quick and hot every time, even when the restaurant is slammed on the weekend. The menu is relatively small, but has a variety of egg scrambles and omelets. My hands-down, favorite dish is the Eggs Escapade - eggs, avocado, tomato, green onions, and cheese. Comes with toast and seasoned red potatoes, with sour cream of course! I recommend spending Saturday morning at the Grand Lake Farmer's Market, then walking up the block to Lynn and Lu's. Talk about a perfect day! -

Went to Lynn and Lu's right after moving to Oakland. The cafe is super cute with a great atmosphere. I went on a week day so it's hard to say how busy it is on the weekend. We were seated immediately and the waitress was super attentive. After we ordered, the food came in less than 10 minutes.
I ordered a simple egg breakfast. The eggs were well-prepared and the potatoes were delicious. My friend ordered a frittata which also tasted great. The only complaint would be that they tend to chop their vegetables very thickly so if you prefer thinly sliced veggies in your omeletes/frittatas this might not be the place for you.
A great experience overall. I'll definitely be going back to try the oatmeal pancakes. -

Frankly, I can't understand how this place has been rated so well by almost everyone else. I'm not hard to please when it comes to breakfast, but this was incredibly disappointing. The food was bland! There was practically NO flavor. I ordered the Eggs A La Justin (an Eggs Benedict with avocado/tomato instead of meat). I had to salt it...the dish was covered in "hollandaise sauce" but I still had to salt it. That's ridiculous. The portions were really large, but the food wasn't inspiring enough to want to finish. I tried my boyfriend's eggs/sausage/pancakes meal & it was so-so. I know there are better places to eat in Oakland, so I will not be wasting my time, money, or appetite at Lynn & Lu's again.

Lynn and Lu's is adorable, delicious and there's rarely a wait. I really love sitting on the back patio on a sunny afternoon for brunch. This mom and pop place has excellent service.
The menu is kind of plain but there are a couple specials that are really spectacular. The eggs escapade are delicious and have a helping heaving of avocado and hollandaise sauce. -

Got the Eggs Escapade $7.95.
-absolutely delicous
-huge portions, i could not even finish it
-I was stuffed
-they give you ALOT of avocado, they do not skimp on ingredients or portions
-fresh ingredients
-good service, really nice and attentive.
-QUICK to get my food
-not a elegant clean restaurant, more of a hole in the wall Berkeley like place.
-only con is street parking and the toast was a little hard
Advice: Get there a little early around 9am. The place was packed by 10am on a Rainy Saturday.Listed in: Cheap Eats

Super speedy service- if you are hungry come on over
i love this place! after moving to oakland this was one of my happy discoveries. the place is reasonably priced, the service is top notch- quick and efficient, and the location is just above lake merritt where there are plenty of little boutique shops you can check out before or after.
i recommend trying their specials. there are of course the brunch staples but i like coming in and checking out what's new. if nothing new strikes your fancy then have a classic eggs benedict. :)
until next time

This place is adorable, super fast, cheap, and delicious.
The restaurant is fairly small and has a homey, country feel, which was a bit unexpected in the middle of Oakland.
We went for a brunch on a Sunday morning, grabbed a seat inside (I think if I had thought about it, we may have tried for the back porch, but there's always next week). Within two minutes, we had a waitress at our table taking our drink order. As soon as the coffee arrived, we placed our order (the oatmeal pancakes, a side of potatoes, and the eggs escapade). It felt like we sat for all of five minutes before the food was on our table, piping hot.
The eggs were wonderful - well prepared, with delicious veggies (including a TON of avocado!) strewn throughout. The potatoes were a delight (slightly charred and earthy tasting, if that makes any sense) and the blueberry sauce you're given for the pancakes is amazing. The pancakes themselves have a really hearty consistency, much denser than they look, which I know won't appeal to everyone, but was really, really good for the boy and I. I ate until I was stuffed, but damn, was it good.
If you need a quick brunch, this is a great, great place. In fact, by the time we left, it looked as if the line to get in was longer than the amount of time it'd take to eat here. Don't miss it, just get in early! -

Love this place. Super cute, but small place to enjoy a good breakfast/brunch. I went here before going to the farmers market last Saturday and can't wait to go back. I had the egg escapade and it was delicious. My friend has the strawberry and banana waffle and it was good as well. Can't wait to try the oatmeal pancake. I heard it's the best.

San Francisco Bay Area
Let me start out by saying breakfast/brunch is my favorite meal of the day. We have several brunch spots that we tend to stick with in the Oakland area because they're awesome. Today we decided to try something new and went to Yelp for direction. I have no idea how this place possibly has 4 stars. This was one of the worst meals I've ever paid for!
The menu has a fair amount of options. I went with the frittata and added diced chicken apple sausage for an extra $2.50. When my food arrived I had no Idea what it was, but it for damn sure wasn't a real frittata!! The best way to describe it would be a bottomless omelet. There was a plate with big chunks of green bell peppers (like a ton of them, every time I ate one it seemed like another appeared) tomato, sliced mushrooms, green onions and salsa soaking in a watery flavorless broth. On top of it was a thick pancake shaped egg with melted cheese. This came with a side of greasy, unseasoned potatoes and dried out whole wheat toast.
For my 3-year old son I ordered the oatmeal pancakes with homemade blueberry sauce. The pancakes had a weird consistency and lacked flavor as well. My son enjoyed his breakfast, but he'll eat just about anything with syrup on it. The fact that he cleaned his plate is a non-factor in my review.
The staff was Ok, nothing special and the bill was $30 + tip for 2 adults and a child pancake. Overall this was a disappointing breakfast:( -

Lynn and Lu's Cafe is a really small cafe hidden near lake Merritt. This is what you call a hole in the wall. Once you walk in, there is a little tiny eating area with maybe 10 tables. However, they have a "patio" area located in the back of their store that you can sit at with maybe 15-20 more tables. The chairs and table outside are really ghetto rigged. The table top are two pieces of wood put together, so when you push down a little, 1/2 the table rises up. The chairs are the white plastic ones which really clean or anything.
The service here is one of the best i have EVER had. They are SO fast and prompt. They are always ready to get anything you need. The food comes out almost instantaneously, but not fast to the point where its like fast food. In the patio they have their own mini kitchen in the back with drinks and utensils which makes it easier for them when you need something, versus them having to run back inside to get it.
My dish that i ordered was honestly REALLY good. I had the Eggs Benedict with a side order of pancakes which i shared. Both were VERY good. The pancakes had a crunchy layer on the outside which made it taste even better. The eggs Benedict was absolutely exquisite. The flavor, the sauce, the English muffin, everything was just so fresh and tasted so great. Other orders on the table apparently wasn't so great. I tried some of my cousins dishes, and they didn't taste as great as the Egg Benedict, which was by the way only 8.95! (rough estimate, i forgot). They don't have hashbrowns here, however they have their house potatoes, which were pretty good, but could have used some improvements. I felt like they could have had a more crunchy outside moist inside. The potatoes were almost like mashed potatoes, very mushy.
The price here is really cheap. Almost all the dishes were under 9 or 10 bucks. No where have i been has Eggs Benedict for under 9 bucks.

Ive lived blocks away from L & L for 10 yrs. I still on occasion go there. The location is convenient & they have a nice outside patio in the back. The service is normal, BUT... here's the problem. The food is bland, the coffee is bland. If it wasn't for location, I'm sure this place would rarely be visited. Sometimes I feel like talking to the cook/owner to tell him, hey I love where this place is and the people working here are very nice, but do you realize the food is very boring. I'm not even a person who usually likes a lot of seasoning but they are, in need of help. If you don't care about having flavorful taste and want to sit outside with decent service then this is the place for you.
Otherwise, skip L & L. -

Bay Area
I have had this place bookmarked forever. The hub and I set out this morning for brunch and finally came here for our first time.
Time: Saturday at 10AM.
Location: Off Grand, easy to find and parking can be difficult especially on the weekends.
Place: It looked small and dark when I first walked in. It was very busy inside. We were asked if we wanted to sit out on the patio which we decided to do since it was a nice day. Lots of seating on the patio in the back. I would opt for the patio seating since the dining room looked jam packed with people.
Menu/Food: Lots to choose from they have their regular weekly breakfast options and their weekend brunch menu. I ordered the Willi omelet which was 3 eggs with chicken apple sausage, green onion and cheese. I asked for egg whites. Their breakfast/brunch plates all come with grilled red potatoes and your choice of toast. I subbed my toast for the apple coffee cake which was $1.00 extra, well worth it. The Hub ordered the frittata which is their open face omelet that takes up the whole plate with tomatoes, mushrooms, cheese and green bell peppers. The food was good, the portions were large, the ingredients were fresh and the only waited 10 minutes we were very surprised how fast it came out. We both agreed that the potatoes were a little on the bland side it could use a little more spice. We used some hot sauce and ketchup to help give them some flavor.
Price: Most of the menu is around $8.00-$10.00. Our tab was $18.05 with two meals, extra charge for egg whites and coffee cake. Not bad at all and worth coming back to.
Service: The waitresses were great very attentive with refilling our waters and asking if we needed anything through out the meal. We didn't feel rushed and they wait until you are finished before putting down the check. I hate receiving the check with the food. -

my new fave breakfast spot.
eggs are jumbo
they have really good homemade bluuberry sauce if you want that instead of or in addition to syrup. their waffle isn't belgian but still hits the spot.
the only weird thing was the oatmeal pancake. good... but you have to be a fiber-loving mood and ready for a thick, dense pancacke. i liked it but only ate 1/2 of it. -
Review from Vicky L.
President's Day morning brought us to Lynn & Lu's for breakfast in Oakland, since neither of us had any desire to get up early and battle SF crowds for a table.
Lynn & Lu's is one of those places that's just simply adorable. It's a small place, but they're quick, so people are in and out pretty fast. We were seated, and they took our order: Lynn's Breakfast for him (waffle, eggs, bacon) and the Eggs Benedict for me.
I've definitely had better Eggs Benedict, but this was such a huge portion for the price that I really can't knock it at all. The hollandaise sauce was really runny and sparse, so it wasn't able to adequately flavor the entire dish.
I'm totally a fan, though, of the place in general. Good prices, great portions, and excellent service. Because of the business (and the quick service), this isn't really a place for you to kick back and enjoy your coffee and conversation, but it is a good place to get some pretty satisfying grub in the AM hours. -

Two words: Buttermilk Pancakes
For some reason, creating a fresh batch of pancakes seems to elude most brunch restaurants in the Bay Area. Not so for Lynn & Lu's. The Buttermilk Pancakes here are soft, fluffy, dense and cooked thoroughly. I'm not sure about the review that challenged Mama's in S.F. (still the best in the Bay to me), but with a side of blueberry sauce these pancakes are the best in Oakland.
The bacon and scrambled eggs were ok, decent for breakfast but nothing impressive. My partner had the Lynn Special (Waffle/Eggs/Bacon combo) and she was less than impressed with the Waffle. It was a bit overcooked and crunchy. I've only had a few visits here so I haven't tasted everything in the menu.
Overall, Lynn & Lu's get's a three for a good quality breakfast place that isn't too pretentious - it's a basic dinner-style restaurant with dinner-style quality. Except the pancakes: They are awesome! -

This place was a delightful surprise one Sunday after some Lake Merritt exercising. The back patio was pleasant and the food came out super fast. The servers were upbeat and pleasant and accommodated our high maintenance LA style special requests. My eggs came out exactly the way I asked for them and the coffee was really good (unusual for a diner). The bill was very cheap and we left happy.

When it comes to nursing a hangover on a Sunday morning I drink a big Green Smoothie in the morning, and then head over to one of my Oakland spots and have some coffee with an order of Eggs Benedict. There are some places that don't serve veggie bennys, but this isn't one of them.
Lynn and Lu's eggs Benedict (eggs a la Justin) isn't the best I've had, but it's consistent and has avocado on it. I LOVE avocado!!!! Thank you Lynn and Lu's for knowing what a California girl loves!!!
I also really like their patio in the back. I love eating outside and they have a really nice, covered patio in the back that keeps me out of the sun! Woo hoo! For these reasons, I will continue to come back.
