Such a cute and aromatic store! My dad loves his tea, so I wouldn't insult him by purchasing him something different, but I did find him a wonderful mug set for under twenty bucks here! The lady tore the box as she opened it and was going to sell that to me. But then she asked me if it was gift, and immediately got me a new box when I told her that it was. She should have done that regardless, but I'm glad she was nice enough to ask. I'll be back...to get some tea for myself.

I never knew this gem existed inside of Westfield Mall! All sorts of tea flavors available as loose leaf, tea bags, etc. Many opportunities to sniff out the best tea and also some great offers along with purchases up to a certain amount.
I went a little crazy in the store since I saw the "Matcha" display with some easy-to-make green tea powder "to go" packets. If I purchased at least $10 in green tea products, I could get a free tea whisk! So I caved in for the offer....now I can make my own authentic green tea complete with the whisk.
They also had chai, Chinese tea, etc. Great for the tea addict. =)
It's like a Sanrio Surprises for big kids, but instead of Hello Kitty, Keroppi, and Pekkle, they've got yerba mate, rooibos, and pekoe. Same Japanese flair, dainty packaging, and free gifts with every purchase.
Forget coffee (sorry coffee lovers) but I would prefer a good cup-o-tea over a cup of joe any day. Lupicia is to tea lover as... well I don't know but they do have a lot of teas thats for sure. I would have taken a picture of the wide variety of teas, but one of the ladies told me I could not. Another worker was saying to the other one that someone else took pictures before and it was ok. I guess the lady who told me no over ruled the other one and the decision stood, I should of snapped it before she caught me. They usually have a tea brewing for customers to taste as well as a list of workers favorites to help you make your decision. Good thing, because I had no idea what I wanted... there is just too much to choose from! I asked the worker what she recommended and I don't know if she meant it, but she recommended the ones that were about 4x more expensive than the other ones. I figured I would pass as tea is just not THAT important to me where I would pay $25 for a 2oz bag of it.

This is like a Starbucks for tea in a mall and is not your typical European cream and one or two lump type of tea shop nor is it your Lipton gourmet tea. When you step into this store, you'll take in rows and rows of drawers and bins filled with varieties of black, green, and red tea. This reminds me of the herb stores in Chinatown only this place smells better. It could be the amble fruity tea assortments offered. This establishment concocts interesting tea mixtures. Open tins of mixed assortments are displayed to nourish your proboscis. The quality tea is packaged in attractive tins and boxes. You can purchase pre-packaged varietal assortment or pick your own selection. I was attracted to the loose black tea fruit blends like grapefruit and mango.
Each purchase includes a tea bag sampling. On one visit, I got a sample of Momo tea. Its flavor was fruity, pleasant, mellow, and soothing. A sampling of tea is brewed each day where you can appraise a petite cup.
When you price this tea, it is a lesser expense compared to gourmet coffee. Tea is a healthy alternative to coffee so I drink this in the evening.
You'll also find varieties of tea service and jams here.

I really wanted to love this place - their tagline "Fresh Tea" had me eagerly anticipating my first visit to Lupicia. Why?
Because any tea company who promotes tea as a fresh food vs. dried crusty herb that can be stored indefinitely is already doing something right in my mind.
I visited on a Sunday afternoon, and I was the only one in the shop. And it's a great-looking space, warm and inviting, with lots of interesting teaware and some gorgeous (and $$$) copper tea caddies.
Where it went wrong for me - Tea samples are stored in small glass or plastic jars, giving visitors a good look at all the different types of tea. Tea is pretty. I like looking at tea.
And then I opened up one of their toasted rice teas (not Gen Mai Cha, but something similar), and it smelled...stale. Like it was a sample that had been sitting in the glass jar, getting fried by the fluorescent lights for who knows how long, losing all yummy tea characteristics. No nuttiness, no toasted rice, just...blah. Cardboard smells better.
So, I didn't buy anything this trip, but I'll probably try again...hopefully after they've refreshed their samples.

Free sample(s) with every purchase.
I love this place.
Every tea is in a little tin available for your smelling pleasure. On weekdays they'll even brew up a sample for you to taste. Any flavor you want.
Champagne Rose is great, Grapefruit is great, but the Cookie tea is off the hook.
The staff is super friendly. Every once in a while there is a guy in a kimono out front giving out samples.

They have an extensive selection of tea here. They are quite pricey. You can smell each one. I've tried the lychee tea and it is good. But to me, it didn't taste anything like lychee.
I LOVE their tea sets. They are so cute!
Staff is very friendly.
Oh, the tea you buy has a one year expiration from the date of purchase. They don't tell you but if you want your tea in a tin, it costs extra. The tea leaves is not in the tin. The tea bag (that the tea leaves are in) goes in the tin. I guess you have o put the tea leaves in the tin when you get home.
Only noticed this tea shop recently. Seems like an odd shop to be in the mall. Friendly staff and a huge selection of tea. You can spend a lot of time just smelling the canister samples. They had some good sales after the holidays.
I took one step inside this store and instantly fell in love. The aroma of the huge variety of tea is wonderful. I bought a special holiday blend for my mom, and she made a pot of the tea for the whole family every night I stayed home during Christmas break. The labels and tins are charming. My purchase came with an extensive catalog, detailed directions on how to prepare many different kinds of tea, and a free sample. Hurray for tea!

This is a delightful little corner store in the Westfield Mall. They have loose tea, tea in bags, tea accessories, and very kind help. It is all charm and calm, just like a good cup of tea should be. They don't always have the tea I want, an apricot flavored green tea in a bag, so minus one star. But, oh, I found a white peach tea that makes up for it. I just hope they will have it the next time I go in and then I will upgrade this review to 5 stars.
As an aside, their bags are terrific little pouches, not Lipton flow through bags.

Lupicia is my newest indulgence, for sure! I love the look of the store, the packaging of the products, and the quality and variety of the tea they have here. Lupicia has its roots in Japan, and a lot of the teas are fruity and fragrant.
You can buy teas either pre-packaged into tea bags, or in loose leaf tins... whatever suits your fancy!
I highly recommend the Jardin Sauvage tea, which has a wonderful mango and citrus aroma mixed with green rooibos tea. So divine!

Cute little mall tea shop. Lots of choices and they'll let you sample anything.
A tad expensive, and I'm not one of those people who get bunged up at the thought of monkeys picking the leaves.
Why are monkeys picking the leaves anyway? How do those creepy little no opposable thumb having hands make the tea better? Ack- monkey hands!!!!
I'm not too crazy about this store because tea does not particulary interest me. My friend dragged me in here the other day, and I found myself in a near-fatal situation because I was seriously bored to death. The lady who helped my friend was very pleasant and polite, but that does not overcompensate for the fact that this place is nothing more than a bunch of dehydrated leaves on display. It's probably an orgasmic paradise for tea lovers, but personally, I would never come in here on my own will. Since my friend really loved the experience, here's three generous stars.

I just got back from Tokyo today and they have one of these in Tokyu at the Shibuya station. I'm not sure if I can find the words to describe how good this tea is and how extensive the selection is. Jet lag is kicking it. I can tell you that the store clerk politely asked if I was done yet after I kept ordering another tea, then another tea, then another tea. The containers are just too cute to pass up!
Brace yourselves tea lovers, you might want to set a budget.
BTW - When is Yelp going international?!?!?!?!
Everything about this shop worked for me. The staff was there to answer my questions, but also stayed out of my way so that I could shop. The teas are INCREDIBLE! They taste so good that you don't even need to sweeten, and they have a huge variety. Plus, for such great quality the products are relatively inexpensive. I loved this place, I'll definetly be back!

I typically avoid even the vicinity of this store because even though I'm not a big shopper, Lupicia is one of the few places where I'm in danger of dropping way more money than intended. I'm a sucker for cute packaging, attention to detail and extreme organization (eew, did I really just admit that?). Oh, and the tea, very good quality and they've a ton of neat flavors and types.
So I now utilize their sale table quite often and have in the past scored my favorite yuzu green tea for only $3 or $4 for a 50 grams of loose tea. Not a bad price and it takes me quite a bit a time to go through a package. Seems like the Stonestown store has a larger selection of sales stuff too.
FYI, I always buy the loose teas and then head over to Daiso and stock up on unbleached empty tea bags for filling with my tea leaves. Much simpler than using a strainer or any other contraption and less clean up too.

This place is darling, if only it weren't located in the mall.
The teas are nicely organized in small tins that can be smelled (and sampled if you ask nicely). The staff is courteous and very helpful. It's a step up from Teavana, where they pull the huge tins of tea from the shelf for everyone and their brother to stick their schnozzes into. I don't want boogers in my sencha.
Recommendations: the grapefruit green is lovely, and the mango (green) oolong is subtle but very soothing.
Not too pricey either--I paid $15 for two 30g tins.

Oh! This store is absolutely lovely!
I love smelling all the tea samples. Sharing nose germs with strangers didn't even cross my mind - I was having such a good time.
I love the free sample!
I love the whimsical labels on tea canisters.
I love the momo.
This is Disneyland for Tea Lovers!
I came here with a friend because he wanted to get some Tea for his GF who apparently is a Tea Fanatic. As we walked though the mall i kept thinking, "Is there really a whole store that is just dedicated to Tea?" And of course there is.
Right as we walked in we were offered a sample of some iced Matcha tea they had just made. Nice, now i have something to sip on while i blankly stare at at leaves in tin cans. I was confused as to how to go about shopping for tea at this store. But then i saw some other customers opening up all the tin cans and taking a good whiff and i then decided to do the same.
Thats when things started to become interesting. I was addicted. i wanted to go down every row and smell what each tea was like. There were many that smelled absolutely delicious...but then i looked at the price and gasped! I don't care how good it smells, it should never cost that much =P
These days when the average person thinks of tea, the 20 year old drink, tapioca milk tea, immediately comes to mind. 20 you say? Well that's how old the drink is in Taiwan, but it didn't come to our shores until around 96, and then attained "cult" status until some 7+ years ago. In the meantime this drink is going through a counter revolution elsewhere. People come for the drink, but care little about the tea at the good places (and forget the mass produced artifical crap at places that start with Q or L and end in Y or Cup)
Tea definitely needs an uplift in its image. Starbucks took coffee into a posh "must have" brand without the quality to go with it, and an "African America" (aka black for you non PC conforming old schoolers) friend once lamented to me, "what's up with all these WHITE folks wanting to get BLACK drinks?" (He was referring to coffee, and he was a tea guy, and an "ass man" to boot, quite the stereotype who analyzes too much, or should I say stereolyze).
Lupicia doesn't stoop to selling frou frou fancy name drinks (although there are tea salon locations in some of the Japan stores) but they have taken tea marketing and offerings to the next level.
While many tea shops have cropped up in SF Chinatown and try to revolutionize marketing by doing tea demos of tea ceremony kind of things, sampling, and some even go as far as having a girl wearing a traditional dress sitting down and playing a Chinese harp (Goo Tzung) for that extra supposed wow factor, they don't fool me for a minute, as I watched hapless tourists get sucked into the game.
Imperial Tea at the Ferry Building has the decor down, but something is still lacking. Perhaps it is the price, location, or the fact that I know I can purchase the same tea when I got to Taipei next time for even cheaper?
So glad that Lupicia has finally broke into Northern California, with two locations in SF. I've actually been to the one at Ala Moana in Waikiki (Oahu/Hawaii) but did not try anything then.
Lupicia is a Japanese company, with locations in Taiwan, tons in Japan (of course), Hong Kong, and a few in the USA. While they might not be as wicked as what I've read about Ito-En's store in NY, this place REALLY knows how to market tea. There are literally hundreds of varieties to choose from and blends you probably won't be able to find anywhere else. On display are all their offerings in round tin cans, which you can open to sample (ie smell and get a whiff). Sales people are helpful to answer any questions and or offer the sample tea of the day. But even better is that if you want to try a tea before buying, if you have 5 to 10 minutes they will brew a sample for you to try!
While I was not terribly impressed with the Chinese oolong store sample, there were some blends that smelled really really good, such as the black tea blend with muscat (grapes). There was even one with champagne, and the rose green tea must be a hit with the ladies. Some of these teas are available as teabags in packs of 5 or 10. They even have small jars of honey that are flavored with tea, and even that cool little device for properly stirring maccha/matcha (green tea powder).
There are 2 to 3 kinds of Sencha here, as well as two kinds of sobacha blend with green tea (with buckwheat seeds in them) which is a nice alternative if you like the genmai cha (green tea with brown rice). One of the sobacha blends is available in tea bag form, which I have grown to really enjoy.
Even if you are not a huge tea fan, drop by in here to take a look and take time to try out and at least smell the samples. There's really no need to sample stuff at Sephora if you want fragrances, just come here! If you feel depressed from all that shopping and/or need a boost of energy, come in here, and take a few hits (and whiffs) of the tea, and bam, you'll be back on your feet in no time.
I probably won't get western or Chinese leaves at Lupicia, but I do believe there are some hidden gems here, such as some of the varieties of greens, Japanese teas (the sakura sounds interesting, and make sure you take a few hits of the white peach tea as well), and a few out of the box blends.

My shrink has Lupicia Tea in his waiting room. Every time I go, I make sure to have some tea to calm myself before going in to divulge all my internal turmoil. Somehow, I don't get the calming effect from other brands of tea like Lipton.
With that being said, I visited the shop in the Westfield Mall and I was amazed at all the selection. This place has more selection of teas than the aisle at my local Pacific Supermarket! It was the first time I saw flavored green teas. I really like the Grapefruit and Green Apple green teas.
When I need a nice calming effect, Lupicia Tea does the trick for me.

This is a great retail tea outlet, with a wide variety of teas . . . and only teas.
This is NOT A SIT DOWN TEA SHOP, however. There's a bench, and that's it. If you want to relax with a nice cuppa, head over to Samovar.
Dear Kind Lupicia Saleslady,
Thank you for demonstrating how to make chai tea. I especially enjoyed the strong taste of the crushed silonibari (I think it was that) and smelling the different kinds of chai spices. Don't mind the guys that hated your tea because they couldn't taste the milk. Hello!! It's chai tea, why would you want to taste the milk?!?!
Anyways, I'll back back to spend another $100 soon after my mom finishes all the tea I got for her.
PS. Can you teach me how to make iced tea?
PSS. I apologize for my friend who couldn't try the chai tea because he is lactose intolerant.
This store is so dangerous for me because I'll end up spending more than I intended to. In the end, enjoying every last dollar I spend because it's worth it. I absolutely love tea and trying different flavors of them. Lupicia is the cutest store with a fantastic selection of teas, chai, and much more. I love how they have each tin layed out for you to smell and they give you samples of hot and cold tea to try as you're looking around. The workers seem knowledgable and approachable and wear cute little outfits that seem to match their personality.
So far I've tried the Marron Chocolat, Vanilla, Strawberry & Vanilla, Cinnimon, and Momo Oolong Teas. I really like the Momo Oolong Green Tea which has a subtle peach flavor to it. This place is a definite winner.

What a cool store!!! You walk in and it looks like a chinese herb apothecary, but of course, without the rank smells.... The left wall is lined with drawers of tea. You can smell the hundred + varieties of tea they have that are organized by type (green, oolong, etc.) and they carry teas from all sorts of different regions.
Not only that, but the staff is friendly and eager to help you find 'the perfect tea for you'. I probably spent a good 20-30 minutes in there just smelling the different teas and looking at all of the different options.
This is a tea lover's dream store.

Yippee! I first discovered Lupicia at the Ala Moana Mall in Honolulu. I was so addicted to the entire layout and tea selection experience and was again today at the San Francisco Centre store.
The sales lady I worked with was extremely patient, gracious, and knowledgeable. I had my gift set all laid out, she gave me free tastings and samples, and then my eye spyed other worthy teas. So I got another round at the cash register. All in all, I lost (gleefully) one hour of my life in that store.
For those looking for such, they have a small selection of wedding-themed tea gift tins and tea-flavored honey, artfully boxed and everything. The package, in French, says "Nous ne savons comment vous remercier. Une grosse bise a vous." Roughly translated, it means, "We do not know how to thank you. A big kiss to you." Or, for the big tins, you can have it customized with your wedding name/date for free, if you're not the sort of person to blow kisses left and right. :P

This is an amazing store! Along one side of the store are tins full of tea. Each one has a descriptive name and a wonderful description of the tea. Then you can open them up to smell and decide which appeal to you before purchasing. They often have samples which is a fun way to try teas you might not typically buy.
And what variety! Breakfast Tea, Wedding Tea, Chocolate Tea, Jasmine Green Tea, Tea pearls that open into flowers as they hydrate. Some teas have special honey that match and each bring out the flavor of the other.
Additionally they have some wonderful gift sets, tea pots, and will wrap anything for you into a gift.
It is a remarkable store, clean, well lit, and always a joy to go into. This store is responsible for making my husband discover a love of tea!

Why oh why did I have to discover this place. I am normally all coffee, all espresso but on occasion a nice cup of matcha green tea appeals to me. I regretfully fell under Lupicia's spell. Whoever came up with the concept for this tea shop really deserves a raise because I ventured away from my usual green or jasmine tea. I bought one black tea/chestnut blend and one green tea/berry blend for about $12. Pricey I know...I couldn't help it, the chestnut scent from the black tea was so intoxicating. Also with a name like Chaud les Marrons!! my imagination just gets lost and I'm back there again in those Parisian markets sampling breads, and cheeses, and munching on a handful of hot chestnuts.

This place reminds me of a specialty tea place in Melbourne, Australia. Similar in which you can smell the different cans of tea....Love the champagne rose, La Vie en rose, orange chocolate, banana chocolate and marroon chocolate. Great aroma in all of them. The small bag of tea starts at $5 and the bigger tin size starts at $12-15.

tea to smell for days here!
Literally hundreds of tea canisters are lovingly splayed out for your olfactory pleasure. The store is bright and perky with special tea gift assortments artistically arranged. Just what you'd expect from a Japanese tea chain. And, just like the Japanese, it ain't cheap!
I understand that you can request to sample any of the teas that they sell, though I prefer to let my nose guide the way. The teas are arranged by style and origin, green tea, black tea, Indian tea, English tea. I love that there are specific instructions on the loose tea package with temperature and steep time.
Favorites include Chocolate, Vanilla and Earl Gray. I plan to try others, but I'm not as into green tea as black. Sis and mom loved the citrus blends I got them. I don't recommend the Darjeeling, such a disappointment.
My one real gripe is the price. We're talking $5 for about a teeny bag that would yield 3-4 pots.
I received some tea from Lupicia as a gift from my boyfriend. The packaging is terribly adorable, the tea smells beautifully, and tastes perfect!! I went in to grab some more, the sales staff was very helpful. I asked them what is that basic tea they serve in every chinese restaurant, and they pointed out a green tea with rice. This place is so adorable, and it's TOTALLY affordable!! I will definately be back again when I run out ..which will be very soon!
Wow - they have HUNDREDS of teas. It is almost too many choices to decide what you want. The great thing is they always have hot tea samples daily (easy to try something new). The service was wonderful and informative.
A wonderful place to stop by if you love tea... even if you don't, you should still stop by and hopefully you wil change your mind!

This is by far the best tea store I have seen in the US. The only place that comes close is the Ito-En store on Madison in Manhattan, but it even isn't as good as this place.
The selection is huge, the variety great, samples are available, the tea is stamped with a date so you know it's fresh (or how old it is for Pu-Erh). The staff are knowledgeable, and the prices while not cheap are not a rip-off.
I am going to have to start mail-ordering from this place when I move. Either that or fly back for tea pilgrimages.
The service here is really great. I've always gone to the store on during the off hours and during the weekday, when it's less busy int he mall. The sales staff that I've encountered were all very knowledgable and nice. Very willing to make recommendations when I asked for some and to even offer up the day's sample tasting. The little tin that they package the teas in are very nice and easy to reuse for other things. This location does not offer prepared tea drinks just yet.
I wasn't in the mood for tea, but the crowd, woman dressed in a kimono greeting customers, and the exquisite scent of the tea shop lured me in to take a look. Inside the shop, there are rows of beautiful metal tins filled with samples of all their products. It was intriguing in a visual way and enticed me to explore, especially when there was the option to open each tin to smell or touch the tea!
I will definitely return here on a less busy day when I can have a chance to talk to the sales people (the crowd in there was overwhelming). I recommend going to Lupicia when you have time to explore the different teas AND sample their selection of the day. That was the best part of my first experience, taking a break from shopping to have bit of tea...So refreshing.

OMFG.. I thought there will never be a day that I would actually enjoy going into a tea shop and looking at the many varieties of teas imported from around world. Friday was the day of epiphany
This store has almost all the teas available, except for the very, very expensive ones you can only get in select shops. For the rest of us, they sell almost everything else.
You can open the small, see-through tins and smell the tea. No.. You can't lick the tea leafs (I don't see what prevents you from doing other that), but they have other teas everywhere from Japan to India to Africa. Even all the materials to make the tea: teapot, kettle, cups etc can be purchased as well.
They had a sample of teas available for tasting too. As we entered, we were given two samples of teas. I love the almost zen like interior design of the store.
Major props to the interior designer for simple, yet functional store layout and colors.
Will be back to purchase for sure!

I love tea. Samovar is one of my favorite places to meet up with someone. Samovar ain't got jack on this place though.
As the other reviewers have already said, the selection is incredible, you can see and smell all the teas that they sell, and the decor is minimalist.
The manager gave me several samples along with my purchase. That was nice.
However, the flavored teas, my god! I sit here sipping a fresh cup of Marron Chocolat - that's chocolate chestnut black tea, with a touch of cream. It's so damn good. I can't write more.

Yay tea! Here's a welcome addition to the SF center. They have a huge selection of loose leaf teas, both flavored and unflavored. And I'm not ashamed to say that although I have an appreciation for a good Darjeeling estate tea or Yunnan, I love flavored teas. It was really hard to choose-they have a ton of fanciful flavors like Banana Chocolate, and special occasion teas like Wedding and Birthday. They also give you single teabag samples. The teas are all out in tins that you can open and sniff, to get a feel for the texture and aroma of the tea. Great shop! Unfortunately they were sold out of some of the teas I wanted and were out of catalogs. They have a website but it's all in Japanese, so no mailorder, I guess.

I went in here just to browse on Tues 10/17/06. It's a very nice teashop, though they don't have any chairs or a bar so you can't enjoy it that much. You can see and smell all the teas they have, one lady working there told me there are 400 teas!! Crazy.
They had two samples that they were serving today: Jardin Sauvage a bag 1.7 oz/50 g is $7; Tin is $2 more. and Lavender tea (a bag 1.7 oz $6.50/tin $8.50). I enjoyed them both.
These are sold out as of 10/17/06 and they don't know when they will get more:
Gyokuro "seiran no homare"-superior green tea w/ a gracefully deep & rich flavor & distinctive freshness 1.7 oz/50g is $15!
Jasmin dragon pearl 0.8oz/25 g $7.50
Happiness-blend of green tea & green rooibos flavored w/ fresh fruits & containing flower petals 1.7oz/50 g $60!!
under Genmaicha-herbal tea
Kirara rice tea-this aromatic Genmaicha is produced by roasting unhuling rice, "Kirara" in an old-style iron pot 1.7oz/50g $3
They have many types of black tea, black flavored tea, green tea, and green flavored tea. The lady said if you get a bag it'll keep for 3-4 months, a tin will keep it good for 1 yr.
I also got to try 2 other flavors that I wanted to sample, don't remember the names but they were people that worked there's favorites which they noted. That was nice.
I'd recommended it for tea drinkers and others. You'll learn more about tea for sure.
