We (my family and I) tend to enjoy coming to this place. I is great, nice bar, great atmosphere, and the play area (outside) for the kids.
It's nice to sit outside, and really enjoy the nice houston weather, adn keep and eye on my nephew (as he plays in the sand).
The food it great and i love the fact they hae dos equis on tap. I just wish they had more parking, at times. Definately try this place.
Since visiting Lupe Tortilla for the first time yesterday, I've been debating whether this establishment deserves 1 or 2 stars. For now, they get 2.
When you have an active toddler, and you want to meet up with friends who also have a toddler, the list of restaurants that can accommodate hyper little boys are not vast. Lupe Tortilla seemed like a winner....sandbox for kids - check. Adult beverages - check; food - check.
We arrived at 5 pm on a Sunday evening - way before any type of a dinner rush. The good news? We could pick a table on the patio while watching over the kids in the sandbox. The bad news? It took the servers / busboys over 15 minutes to clear the table off from the last patron's dishes & food. We asked numerous times, both at the bar and directly to servers and the lack of service is really appalling. If we had not arranged to meet our friends there, our family would have left.
But since plans were made - fine.
After waiting over 15 minutes to get a clean table, we didn't have much confidence in the cleanliness of the restaurant overall (including food handling), so my husband and I stuck to drinks (meh, nothing to write home about) and queso (ditto).
I wanted to like this place, but as it stands, the best thing about Lupe Tortilla from my perspective is the sandbox area for kids.
Best fajitas in the world!! Can't even comment on anything else since I've never had anything else. Ok, maybe their chips and salsa. But seriously, I crave these fajitas, that's how good it is! I personally like the beef but my husband likes the chicken so we usually share the mixed fajita platter.
A side note on the chips and salsa, it's true that you could judge a Mexican restaurant by their salsa. Lupe's salsa is fresh and yummy, with a little kick to it. I like, give me more!
BTW, 5 star is for the fajitas only. Service is hit or miss, depends on your waitstaff. I've had good ones and not so good ones. I've had to wait for a table and not wait, it just depends. I usually avoid this place on Friday and Saturday nights. Having said that, I did go on a Friday night once and got a table immediately.
Best beef fajitas I've ever had, though overall, I'd say Lupe Tortilla's is over-priced for what you get.
I'll be like the 100th person to say it - these are some of the best beef fajitas around. Whatever they do to their beef works cause thse are just great. The homemade tortillas are burrito sized. The queso, drinks, ambiance, etc are very typical for a tex mex place in Houston and it definitely has that chain restaurant feel. I would definitely return for a tex mex fix!
It is difficult to know what I find most offensive and insulting about this place:
1. The unreasonably long lines for (you find out later) the most underwelming food in Houston;
2. The menus which use that cheesy blend of bad Spanish that white people like to use when they are talking about their maids and gardeners ("Es preety spicy gringo", etc);
3. The waitstaff that seems to not really care whether or not you eat, as long as you do it fast and leave a tip;
4. The INTENSITY of kids everywhere; seriously, I feel safer from H1N1 hanging out in a pre-school than going here where every parent is letting a restaurant playground entertain their kids while they drink badly made machine margaritas filled with cheap tequila and everclear;
5. The food, which is solidly and completely average at best, sloppy, goopy and completely not Mexican. This stuff is as Mexican as King Ranch Casserole.
6. The political beliefs of the owners, who tried to talk to me one evening about my church, their church and who I was voting for in the elections.
All it all, that is 6 reasons to never go back and I only have 5 stars to use for deductions. I could go on, but the concept, service and execution of this place are already in Star Bankrupcy.
Best beef fajitas EVAR!
Best tortillas EVAR!
They add lime to the tender beef fajitas, which make them so savory. The homemade tortillas are huge, so you're really eating a fajita burrito when you actually stuff that thing to full potential. They're warm, hearty, and so tasty that they're addicting.
I hate that they bring out charro beans as an appetizer dip for your chips because I'm always full by the time the fajitas come out. That stuff is a flavor sensation.
Chicken and shrimp fajitas are solid, but don't even compare to the beef fajitas. The margaritas are also good.
They're a great place for to-go orders and catering orders. They're quick, very friendly, and very accommodating. They do a great job of packing everything up for you for transport too.
There's a playground and sandbox in the front for your kiddos, which you can take as either a positive or negative.
The downside of this place though, is that the wait is horrendous. ALWAYS. There never seems to be a "slow" hour, except right when they open in the mornings, which is why to-go orders is the way to go.
Truly their tortillas are a signature item of the restaurant. Basically the fajitas and frozen margaritas are what I come here for. The only downside is the wait on the weekends, but I guess that can only be a good sign.
Ate here with some out-of-town friends over the weekend. I knew this place was notorious for long waits especially on a Friday night, but my crew didn't mind waiting for the 1.5hours we were quoted. Had we not found our way to the back bar and chugged a few beers, I doubt we would've been ever-so patient.
Whenever I come here, I usually order the yummy beef fajitas. However, I had no one else in the group to share it with me this time (darnit), so I changed it up and ordered some tamales instead. The tamales came with rice and beans, plus the obligatory chips and salsa. I think I was too stuffed from the beer and chips/salsa to fully appreciate my tamales as I was only able to eat half my platter. Still, I was happily content with whatever my belly could hold.
Still a fan of this place, although my first pick for scrumptious Mexican food is still El Tiempo.
We met friends here on a Friday night a few weeks ago and holy man, it was packed! Thankfully, our friends were able to get there early and put our name on the list, so the wait didn't end up being too bad. And, somehow all five of us managed to snag seats at the bar -- there's nothing that makes a wait fly by like a (or two...) margarita(s) on the rocks with salt!
Once seated, our server was friendly and efficient. We ordered a mix of chicken and beef fajitas to share since that is clearly the dish to go for here! The fajitas were very good. The tortillas were the best part -- very thin, which was different and delicious. I can see why this is their signature dish. I wouldn't say I was wowed, but the execution was solid.
I don't think I would brave the crowds again of my own accord, although I wouldn't complain about going back if others wanted to eat here.
3.5 stars really.
The hostess was perfectly accurate in her estimate of 30 minutes for a party of 6 at 7:00 on a Friday night. The sand box was full but no over flowing (to my surprise). Our waitress was mostly attentive. My youngest kid threw my silverware, so the rest of my party was about 1/2 way through their meal before I started mine (thanks Gavin). I wish the waitress would have checked on us just a little bit earlier. I really like the way they present their margaritas with the little carafe of the drink and the separate glass of ice.
The food is a little better than average. It is on about on par with Pappasitos. Much better than Ninfas, not as good as El Tiempo.
But, the kids LOVE it. The sandbox is a huge hit. Lupe's is always replacing the playground equipment in the sandbox. This is mainly what brings us back. It says a lot that they take the time and energy to keep the play area safe and clean. Also, they recently posted signs on the outdoor seating area to please not smoke around the kids, which is another really nice touch.
Lastly, when we were leaving, a security guard walked us to our car. That was yet another really nice touch.
Lupe Tortila is great for families or groups with kids to go and hang. It is NOT good for dates, period. Also, do not go to Lupe Tortila to break the news to your husband that you are pregnant. All the bratty, maniacal children will probably cause him to drop his silverware and go running for his life.
I LOVE Lupe Tortilla's beef fajitas. I think in Houston you are either a Pappasito's fajita fan, or a Lupe Tortilla fajita fan. I am the latter. They have the best flavor, and the meat (perhaps its macerated, a la cube steak?) is not chewy at all, but tender. Mmmm, I'm drooling thinking about it. The fajitas for 1 is big enough for 2 people, so my boyfriend and I always split it. My only complaint on the food is that there aren't enough onions- I love that they do the green onions versus chopped onions, but I just want more! The order also comes with tortillas, beans, cheese, pico de gallo, guacamole, and sour cream.
I don't usually eat in the restaurant, as it gets crazy busy from all the families that come for the outside play area. Which I would come for too, if I had kids and lived in West U. Instead I order to go, and although they always say 35 minutes until it's ready, I just order on my way and it's ready when I arrive 15 minutes later :)
I love the fajitas at Lupe's; I think they're the best in town. But the prices have been inching up, and at $17 for beef fajitas for one, they're excessive, and the portions are not huge.
So Lupe's loses a star. Value matters, especially in these tough economic times.
I love me some Lupe's! This is by far one of my favorite places to eat. The fajitas are great and the tortillas are to die for! The flour tortillas are about the size of a baby diaper and the corn tortillas are the greatest. There's a sand box located in front of the restaurant where kids could play while you wait. There's also a full bar which also makes good margaritas. It's a very casual and homey feeling family oriented atmosphere. Definitely a must try if you haven't gone yet.
Everyone goes to Lupe's for the beef fajitas. I grew up in Houston and love Tex-Mex. There are no better beef fajitas in town. The tortillas are by far the best. I love the flavor of the beef. Their queso is one of the better ones I have had also. It is a little runny, but it is good. Maybe a bit bland. I hated the salsa the first time I went there. It has grown on me and is one of my favorites now. The only thing I don't like about Lupe's is there are so many kids there. Depending on where you are seated it can be no big deal though. For people with kids it is great. Every friend that I know when they come back to Houston from out of town wants to go Lupe's.
Ninfa's on navigation is probably my second choice, but it is a pain to get to. It is not as good either. El Tiempo is just a different flavor. It is good, but just not my thing.
I also have never had any problems with service. I have been to Lupe's many times and even with a party of 20. Service has always been very good. It is a crowded place to eat too.
I have noticed that I have been giving all 5-star reviews, so I decided to review a place that is not a favorite of mine. I would have given them one star but there were 3 things I liked about the place so 2 stars it is. No wait, because of my last visit it is back down to 1 star.
This place is so over-hyped I can't believe people will wait up to two hours to eat there. The beef fajitas are the worst I have ever had, they do this weird tenderizing thing w/the beef that reminds me of what they do to the cut of beef they use for chicken friend steak (skirt steak?), some weird pounding thing they do that leaves the texture all weird and icky. The best thing about the place is the chips, salsa & beans. And that is it.
Ambiance is very family oriented and expect a bunch of shrieking, crying kids if you sit any where near the sand pit. And expect to see plenty of adults ignoring their shrieking, crying kids. I am sure not all parents are like the many I saw the last time I was there. To those of you who actually pay attention to your kids, good for you. For those who don't the sand pit is NOT a babysitter!
You can get far better Tex-Mex just about anywhere else, like Chacho's for one and pay a quarter of the price.
Convenient and nice Mexican food within 5-10 minutes from the office. What more do you want for lunch?
During lunch time the place is very busy and you usually have to wait about 15 minutes. We were lucky there was one table outside that nobody wanted. I don't know why as it was low 70's and sunny. We enjoyed it and for being outside, which is the forgotten service spot in many places, we had excellent service.
We decided to go for the "world famous" beef fajitas. While waiting we filled up on the usual chips and salsa and an order of queso. The chips and salsa, one of which is a side of warm beans, have a good bite beyond the regular crunch and grease that you get served all over town. The queso has a nice flavor and is spiced up with chillies, a very pleasant way to kill time while waiting for the fajita's.
Then it is time for the main course. A big skillet is put on the table and is sizzles and smells great. It's covered in beef spring onions and chillies (whole). Then the side keeps being served. Little bowls keep filling the table. Rice, beans, guacamole, chopped tomato's and onions, sour creme and a basket with three large tortilla's per person. Time to build!
Mixing it all in a tortilla I can't wait to take my first bite. It all goes very well together. The beef is well done, crunchy, rich in flavor, a bit greasy and very limy. It all tastes very nice to me, but even though I like lime I can see why this would not be everybodies favorite. If you don't like your meat acidy, don't try the fajita's.
The meat keeps cooking on the skillet and you have to work hard to get your last pieces as they are stuck. I don't mind the scraping, the meat it good. The tortilla are another surprise too, they taste like way more than just another bite of carbs.
All is all good and satisfying. Add a margerita and I could have stayed all afternoon, but work is calling again ...
Good can be simple, but it's not simple to be good
Lupe Tortilla is another one of the many "staples" of Houston Tex-Mex.
If someone were to ask me where my favorite tex-mex in Houston is--I'd have a hard time telling you. There are too many good one's to pick from. I will tell you this--These are the top dogs in no specific order: Lupe Tortilla, Cafe Adobe, El Tiempo, Los Cucos, 1308 Cantina and Chuys.
Lupe Tortilla is cheap, quick on the food--but service can be hit or miss. Also, if you go on a Friday night, expect a long wait. But that's usually okay, because you can go to the bar and order a couple margaritas to keep you company. :-)
All-in-all, you can't go wrong with Lupe.
I love Lupe Tortilla's fajitas. They are fantastic! And there's always enough leftover for lunch the next day. I went at 8 on a Wednesday night, and was pleasantly surprised that the wait for a 2 person table was only about 10 minutes. I don't think I have ever had such a short wait. The waiter was at our table shortly after we sat down, the beers arrived quickly, and so did the food. The chicken and beef fajitas were awesome, and their homemade flour tortillas can't be beat. All in all it was the best experience I've ever had at Lupe Tortilla.
Delicioso!
My colleagues and I came here for dinner & margaritas last night, and I was a bit skeptical, since the first Tex-Mex place we went to was so disappointing (Ninfa's in the mall next to the Houston Center bldgs downtown). However, I was pleasantly pleased with Lupe Tortilla!
Tasty chips & salsa. Smooth margaritas (on the rocks, with salt). And a very yummy combination dish - crisp tortilla with queso, beef enchilada with ancho chile sauce, and a puffy beef taco. Naturally I couldn't eat everything I ordered, but it gave me a good sampling of the menu options.
Next time I'm trying the Fajitas!
Why are people so high on Lupe? I've heard several times that they have the best fajitas in Houston, and both times I've been there it's been way, way less than stellar. Try skirt steak with more fat than meat. How about service for my friend's birthday party that didn't even rise to sub-par standards? When you can't even get a glass of water, let alone a beer, this is a problem.
I guess I'm spoiled - we have Ninfa's on Navigation and Irma's in town: who needs Lupe Tortilla? Granted, this review is based only on the location near Kirby on 59S, so other locations might be better. Just reserve your judgment for the "best fajitas" competition until you've visited the Galvan family at Irma's or Irma's Southwest Grill, or at least have tasted the fajitas of glory cooked daily by the descendants of good ol' Mama Ninfa.
First off, I love the menu! - The play on words is simply genius! I also love the house-like set up, although there can be a lack of elbow room if it is crowded. - The food: I enjoy the Cilantro Jalapeno "Cheekin'" and it is delectable! I've had a few other dishes and have never been disappointed.
Steak fajitas were as advertised. Split them with my equally not-all-that-hungry friend and we were both content.
Soooo good! I had the red spicey cheekin enchildas they were so bomb! the red jalapenos were the perfect level of hot too!
Love this place for the fajitas and the sandbox. The sandbox is WAY too crowded in the evenings to take my toddler so we end up getting there pretty early (like 5). Last time we were still there around 7 it got pretty crazy in the box. I remember saying "It's like Lord of the Flies in there!" I also wish they would fence in the sandbox a little better so I wouldn't have to go chasing H around so he won't run into the parking lot. If you are going to place a playground with an entrance that is 10 steps from a parking lot, it should be closed off and gated. There is a fence but it doesn't go all the way around the play area so the kids run through the bar area at will.
Lupe T's is great but go when its not peak hours. If you go when its crowded expect craziness and overwhelmed staff. Even then the staff is extremely courteous to us moms, even if we are stopping a sand fight with one arm and swilling a marg with the other.
What can you say about Lupe Tortilla, arguably the best Mexican food in Houston?
To start off with, I always get their queso with taco meat. Pair this with some incredibly light and yummy chips and you're ready to look at the menu.
The beef fajitas are some of the best beef you can get in Texas, bar none. The lime marinade is tasty, giving just the right kind of zing to the flavor and the meat is always very tender.
There's really nothing else that I order since most beef (be it in a steak or in a hamburger) can't compare to the beef here. Add to this some of the biggest, freshest tortillas that you'll ever eat, and these fajitas are as close as you can get to perfect.
Since I love a good frozen margarita, the drinks at a Mexican restaurant are a big part of how I rate them. Lupe Tortilla's margaritas (especially the Platinum Frozen ones) are the best in Houston. You never taste the tequila in them (like you do in bad margaritas) and they are always perfect and a tiny bit strong. True, the wait here can be long some times, but at least the margaritas give you something to occupy the time with.
I've seen a few reviews mention bad service, but the staff has always been very nice and helpful, even when we've had parties of twenty-five or more people. We've even shut the restaurant down several times and no one was rude or made us feel like we needed to leave immediately.
Also, they've recently introduced a rewards card program. It's free to sign up and you get a discount off your meal every so many points. Since I get fajitas and a few margaritas, I pretty much get money off at every meal.
Recently, I used my card when my parents, my brother, his girlfriend, and I went to dinner and our bill went from $115 to $85. Not bad for just carrying around a free card! You can sign up either at the restaurant or online:
http://www.lupetortill...
Bottom line: best fajitas, tortillas, and margaritas in town. There may be a wait, but relax in the bar with a margarita and soon it won't matter. Don't forget to sign up for your free rewards card so that you can save on your meals too.
I've never been the one to write about my horrible experiences at restaurants, but last night's experience was just enough to throw me over the edge and jump on the bandwagon.
I love Lupe Tortillas, I think their food is amazing. But I went to this location for the first time for a birthday dinner. Besides the waiter taking an incredibly LONG time serving us water and then disappearing throughout the night (we didn't even know his name), our experience at Lupe was ruined by an uninvited cockroach. Yeah, who cares right? It's just a bug, but the way we were treated by the staff AND manager was by far the worst customer experience I've ever experienced. The first encounter of the roach was when it grazed my friend's shoulder and then she saw it on the chair. We tried to kill it but it was no where to be found. We let that go, but it made quite a scene that staff should have checked to see what was wrong.
2nd encounter was when we saw the roach on the other side of the wall, which resulted in making a bigger scene and screams, knocking over glasses, causing quite a stir. During this time, staff just walked by and didn't bother to even ask to see what was wrong. We then asked for a manager after waving down a waiter.
What was worse was when the manager finally approached us, he treated us with no respect and no sincere apology. Instead he gave us poor excuses of how they can't control bugs coming in and out because the doors are open at lupe tortilla during business hours. He then asked us, after seeing that we were all standing and unsatisfied with our dining experience, if he wanted us to go under the tables and find the cockroach. But the thing is that the way and attitude he offered that suggestion, seemed purely out of sarcasm. He moved on with an insincere apology. He didn't even offer to move us to another table. I was determined to fill out the comment card explaining the horrible dining experience we have had at Lupe Tortilla and the way we were treated.
After we sat back down, with NO appetite left whatsoever, and conversed casually for a while, the cockroach came back and landed on my other friend's shoulder. This was when I drew the line and called for the manager again. After complaining of asking the manager, how they expect us to pay for our meals after this type of experience, especially when the restaurant is violating health codes, he came up with even more excuses of how he cant do anything because we already finished our meals, he can't do anything about the bugs coming in and out, how the exterminator comes weekly, if we expect him to stand at the doors and guard the restaurant from bugs, that he had asked before during the 2nd encounter if we needed him to kill the bug (which was poorly handled), that the waiters are trained to escalate these issues to the manager and in this case, he was not informed about the situation, the whole 9 yards.
Our goal was not to get a free meal, but honestly to get a sincere apology from the restaurant that promises great customer service. The manager treated us with disrespect and I believe he treated us as if we were college students. Clearly we were all working professionals, OUT of college. And even in that case, he should have still treated us with the utmost dignity and respect. Towards the end, he then offered to take care of the bill. Even though we got a free meal, he still kept giving us excuses and not owning the situation. I don't think he realized what we were trying to express. Concerns of health violation, poor treatment of the customers, and lack of respect.
Lupe Tortilla, we will never go to that restaurant again. Poor customer service and attentiveness to our party from the staff/waiter, and disrespectful and rude manager.
EXCELLENT tex-mex and the crowd reflects it! That is really Lupe's only downfall. I won't repeat what I think others have already said pretty well, great fajitas, chips, margs, etc. However I do want to add that I've had an incredibly positive number of experiences interacting with a chef, manager, and waiter at Lupe's about gluten. I'm happy to be able to report that EVERYTHING on their menu with the exception of the flour tortillas (and you will not feel deprived because the corn tortillas are really awesome) is gluten free. They do not use soy sauce or MSG on the meat and the chips have their own fryer. So, those of you with Celiac Disease looking for some good tex-mex, look no further. You will have a great meal and more importantly you will not get sick!
I come here for one reason only: Three Pepper Cheesesteak! Jalapenos, Serranos, Habaneros ... and cheese.
My mouth waters just thinking about it. Remembering how this trio of chiles burns my mouth brings tears to my eyes.
If it wasn't for this I wouldn't bother fighting the crowds, the kids on the playground and the cheesy lingo.
If you're thinking about having Lupe Tortilla cater any special event...please look elsewhere!!!!!!!! Save yourself the time! I contacted these people via email and phone and got NO RESPONSE whatsoever to catering inquiries. I left voicemails, I called several times without ever getting a live person, and my email never got responded to and it has been almost two months. Of course, we went with a different catering service. But on top of all this, two weeks after leaving a "dissatisfied customer" voicemail to their corporate office, the lady, although very nice and very apologetic never followed through with a dining certificate she said she would have mailed to me as a courtesy for the lack of response from Lupe Tortilla. It's been a month and I still never received it. So much for gaining a reputation...
This place has the meanest fajitas I've ever had, and I've lived in TX for a while... I've tried the one out by Hwy 6 and the one off of 59 as well, and the quality of food is the same. We always get the beef fajitas...there's so much that there's always some leftover! (And believe me, you'll want to eat the leftovers). The meat is tender and flavorful. I love the caramelized onions that goes with it, as well as the spicy huge green pepper! Yum.
Come to think of it though, the service is really sub-par. I agree with Shana P. that the staff do act like they're doing you a favor by giving you proper service. I guess being super-crowded all the time doesn't help (this is weekday lunch and dinner). But it took forever to get our food, and even longer to get our check! I think our dinner was stretched out by an extra hour just because of all the waiting, and we were starving (it was already 8pm!). It is also not a good place to catch up with friends (man, why do my friends always pick the noisy places??) because of the crowd, crying babies, drunk people.
Even with all that said, I would still put up with it just to have some of their beef fajitas... *sigh*.
I don't get it. With all of the great places to get Mexican Food in Houston, I'm not sure where you get all of the love for Lupe Tortilla.
All of the food is okay and my husband likes the Chicken Fajita Nachos but nothing here is really anything special. We can get Fajita Nachos closer to home with better service.
I would have to say, my biggest gripe here is the waitstaff. Every time I've been there, the servers act like they're doing you a favor by showing up to take your order. And when your food finally does arrive, everyone we've dealt with here acts so put out to have to deliver it to the table. Oh, and if you're thirsty, don't count on getting a refill of something like water or soda. You'll only get them hopping if you're ordering alcoholic beverages that run up the bill.
I have to say, I've been disappointed by Lupe Tortilla and once you've tasted something bitter like that it flavors everything you've ever eaten there.
Get the Fajitas! You always know what you are going to get at this place. It stays busy for a reason. Its good. Don't kid yourself people don't just come for the huge sand pit. Man, I'm sure we will bring our kids (only twinkles at this point) to this someday as well but it looks like a mess. The first few times I tried this place I ordered enchilada's. They are ok but that is a mistake. If you want good enchiladas go to Chuy's or Cadalac Bar. Smoken good. Lupe's is all about the Fajitas and they have decent margaritas and Dos XX's on tap. Tip: If you want to save money the Fajitas for one can usually feed two if you are not overly starving. Now, Its all about the Bengeman's baby!!!
The food is great but the people who go and hang in the sand box are very undesirable to put it nicely. We love to go and sit and let the girls play after a hard days work and eat their fajitas (beef and chicken) YUMMY! the RITA is great also. Service is good. And the girls love the lady that's there on the weekends giving body art.Fun for the whole family.
I had been looking for a place where I can enjoy a great meal, the best time with my family and a place where the kids can play while Mommy and Daddy enjoy time together. I was reluctant to come to this place, but I finally walked into the door of a family sanctuary. I do not understand why I refused to step into Lupe Tortilla. I believe I just found the perfect margarita. You might ask why perfect? Well the best thing about it is: Walk in to a restaurant that has the playground next to the bar.... yes, I already know what you are thinking. What kind of parent are you that you need to go to the bar enjoy a drink and let the children play? Well you can come and enjoy my children for a few hours trust me you will ask for a drink with in ten minutes of being with them.. (Joking) I can only say that this is parents' time to have a time for us and not think about the home issues. For now on you will find us at the bar tables at Lupe tortilla!!
I like the atmosphere at this Lupe and the one on 45 and Bay Area. They have cozy "rooms" with 4 or 5 tables so you get a more intimate dining experience than the huge loud areas in some restaurants. Also, there's a sand play area just off the patio for the kiddos, so as long as you don't mind having to bathe the kiddos as soon as you get home, at least they won't whine through dinner right?
As for the food, it's hit or miss. I absolutely loved the Steak Lupe, my sis had the Fajita Trio which was good but didn't come with sauteed onions or peppers like we expected. And to add the six shimp for $10 was a little high for $14 fajitas! The enchiladas have an unusual green sauce, so you might want it on the side or try salsa or queso instead. Oh and they bring beans for dipping with the salsa and chips! Yum!
I've heard good things about this place, but maybe I just came at the wrong time. I ordered the steak fajitas and they were really nothing special. It was a little cold and the beans were so-so. I did like the dirty rice, but I don't go to restaurants for their sides. I'll try to come back some other time to see if this was an anomaly, but until then I think I'll stick to Ninfa's.
It started out promising. They had good, warm chips, a great salsa, and, also for dipping, a bowl of pinto beans. It was all very good.
Perhaps we had too many chips. However, everything just tasted...greasy. I had tacos, in a shell that was somewhere between what I expect for a taco and a tostada. There was nothing special about it, but nothing particularly bad about them. My wife's flautas were about the same.
The service was also OK, but felt a step behind where they needed to be.
All in all, not a bad place to go, but not somewhere I feel the need to rush back to.
I've been coming here for over 10 years. Much more so when my daughter was younger so she could play in the sandbox with the other mugglers. Becareful to keep an eye on your kid I witnessed a few sand fights...and it wasn't pretty. Anyway moving on. Like anything else if your picky about service then arrive before the big dinner crowd. Otherwise, you'll find yourself getting annoyed & perhaps wasted from drinking all those Margaritas while you waited, lol The chicken & beef fajitas are the way to go here. The meat will melt in your mouth. They're marinated to perfection! Oh and did I mention those margaritas?? Gotta have at least 2 of those!~
I was in Houston for a business trip about a year ago, when some of the locals pointed me to this place. In Chicago, most Mexican food here tastes pretty much the same, even in the nicer restaurants. Lupe Tortilla changed my opinion about that, and I ended up coming here almost every day for lunch during my trip!
