25 reviews for Lung Shan Restaurant
If I want traditional Chinese take-out, I call Lung Shan. They remember me now... not sure if that's a good thing. Ha.
Love anything of theirs with the BBQ Pork. I think I like the Hot & Sour Soup and I definitely like the Crab-Fried Wontons. Super quick delivery, almost always way less than they quote you.
Also, online ordering (either through Grub-hub or their site) is a definite bonus... no need for extra human interaction! How anti-social of me. Oh well.
I really don't like to give unfavorable reviews, but Lung Shan left me no choice. I ordered online from http://eat24hours.com, so please note that this review is only for the food--not the restaurant itself.
The food was delivered in a reasonable amount of time, and the delivery person was quite nice. That's about all the positive feedback I can give. My expectations for Chinese delivery are not at all high, and I still threw out everything but the soup after a few bites.
Beef with greens and pan-fried noodles had a few pieces of gummy, tasteless beef and wilted bok-choy. Snow white chicken was way too garlicky (and I do love my garlic!), and the vegetables were limp and overcooked. The roast pork appetizer came swimming in a thick, overwhelmingly sweet sauce. The hot and sour soup (free with $15 purchase) was passable, though not even a tiny bit hot, and lacking the ground or shredded pork that most restaurants tend to include.
I've enjoyed the food from 3-4 of the other Chinese restaurants on Eat24Hours, and will order from one of them next time.
The fish in my Fish with Black Bean Sauce was tasty enough, but I didn't care for the chicken in my Fish with Black Bean Sauce.
Review based on delivery order.
Got the family dinner special "B" and it took an hour for the food to arrive. Everything was decent but a bit too greasy. I think I liked the Moo Sho Chicken best, but really nothing to rave about here.
We ordered 7 dishes for delivery for our office. It was delivered pretty quickly so from what these other reviews are saying, I'm guessing their delivery time is just really hit or miss. The food itself was about as good as chinese takeout gets. The Mushu Pork was pretty good and the fried rice was actually pretty nice - fluffy, tasty, with plenty of bbq pork to go around. Beef and broccoli was kinda tasteless though. They were nice and threw in some wonton soup for free, so I'm bonusing them an extra star. Besides, what more do you expect from Chinese takeout?
These guys are garbage. Ordered when I was to tired to cook and they tell me it'll be 35-45 mins for delivery. An hour and a half later, instead of phoning me as I requested to let him, the driver starts honking. I'm on the second floor and so it was only luck (or not) that I had the window open and heard him. The guy refuses to give me a receipt, hands me the food, and takes off.
Now I'm starving, but I'll forget about all the unpleasantness if the food is any good. It's not the food we ordered. Not even close. I call them and they don't answer their phone. Still starving I eat the wrong order. The food is terrible. NEVER order from these people.
Thanks for the menu (trash) that you left on every car in our PRIVATE parking lot. Now your menu (litter) will pepper the lot as we patronize another restaurant for lunch.
edit: being the good Samaritan that I am, I'm collecting the menus from all the cars and those discarded on the ground during my lunch so that I can cross-shred them and return them to you.
terrible, generic "chinese" fast food. we order delivery for lunch in the office once in a while, but i still haven't gotten anything I like from here yet. mu shu, bbq pork, broccoli beef: all boring and probably something you can cook for yourself at home with frozen vegetables and have it come out better. i think i'll skip it next time we do a group order.
It's the closest Chinese restaurant place near my condo and I must say its pretty decent. I went one random Sunday afternoon and ate at the place. It was pretty empty besides me and a family of 4. The lady sat her a$$ down the whole time I was there and watched TV. I think she got up once to give me a pot of tea.
The food was ok better than 29 palms. I am a sucker for potstickers. Their potstickers were pretty tasty, especially with soy sauce and the red pepper sauce on the table. The pan fried chow main I got was good too. I am so happy that I found a place that also delivers. Its not like other delivery places in the city where you have to spend 20 bucks to get food to your house. The min is 10 bucks and the dude brings you your food to your home. I actually tried the delivery service. They lady said it was gonna take 30 to 45 mins but it got their in like 20 mins. Maybe they were quick cause I live like two to three blocks away.
All in all, the food is mediocre but I'll still eat it. The service at the restaurant was not the greatest, and the delivery was quick and prompt.
I ate here once and there were ANTS on my table. When I complained, the woman working there said to me, "What? You want to move? Move over here!" as if my complaint wasn't founded.
I don't remember the food, I was so grossed out by the ants on the previous table.
I eat at this place fairly regularly, once every couple of weeks. I work across the street, and can't fight the craving for their soup when I'm sick or cold, or their chow mein when I need big food fast, or their walnut prawns when I'm feeling a little fancy.
It's totally cheap, and totally amazing, and totally weird. The best part of the whole experience, though, is playing spot the difference with the two different posters of rainbow horses carrying Chinese leaders on the wall. Or trying to understand what's going on in the shows the woman at the counters watching from where they're at and how mad they look.
I highly recommend their chicken won-ton soup, their walnut prawns, sesame chicken, and beef and broccoli. Their pot stickers are awesome, too.
Again, I am dismayed to find that a restaurant that serves delicious food has such a low score on Yelp. *boo*
This review is for their delivery experience only.
Since taking a part-time job in Noe Valley, I've been surrounded by Chinese-born Chinese (CBCs) who order from Lung Shan on a regular basis. When I've suggested Eric's or other "popular" Chinese-food restaurants, I've been told that Lung Shan's food is as close to the "real thing" as they can get in the area.
The food is delicious, and the lunch meals are a bargain! In particular, I suggest that you try their fish with asparagus lunch meal ... big hunks of asparagus and moist pieces of fish are prepared with black bean sauce and served with a heaping mound of fluffy white rice. We can generally order two lunch specials and split it between three of us for a couple days ... it's a boatload of food!
The delivery service has always been quick and friendly, so I'm guessing that people have had the misfortune of catching Lung Shan on a bad day or during peak hours. Dunno. My experience has been super positive here.
Apparently I'm the first person who's actually eaten IN this place to review it. Woohoo!
Okay, I have no idea what their delivery service is like. I wouldn't be surprised if it was awful. I definitely do not go to Lung Shan for the outstanding customer service; I go to it because:
[a] They serve consistently great, cheap food. I've never had anything I didn't like here. Their seafood is fresh and well-cooked, their noodles and fried rice are properly seasoned, and they make everything to order.
But perhaps even more importantly...
[b] This place is freakin' WEIRD. Like, awesome weird.
I've been here maybe, like, 3 or 4 times, and walked by it way more than that. I have never seen ANYone (besides myself and the boyfriend when we're there) eating inside. In fact I've only seen one person walk in for pick-up, either.
There's always the same woman in the front. She has a severely lazy eye. She's the most singularly brusque, sour-faced lady I've ever seen. That said, I wouldn't say she's rude or anything, just, well, weird and preoccupied.
Preoccupied with the giant comfy armchair she has sitting in the back of the restaurant, where she kicks back and watches degraded videotape copies of Chinese programs on an ancient TV. She appears to do this all day. The restaurant doesn't have music playing, so it's silent unless her shows are on.
Other than that, there isn't much decor. The tables have vases with cheap artificial flowers in them. There's a podium in the front of the room for no reason. That's all I really remember. The cook (unless there's more than one) is a very nice, very quiet lady who sometimes brings the food out herself.
I don't think it's possible to properly capture the weird factor here in words. You'll have to go there to find out yourself--and I highly recommend you do.
04/02/08 edit: DUDE. I just went in here the other day, and they have added some new weirdass awesomeness to their decor! They now have a seat where people getting takeout can wait, and It's the backseat from a truck. With all the base metal parts still attached and everying!
Called ahead 40 minutes on my way into the city. This was on the way to a friend's pot luck, so I decided to order a bunch of spring rolls for the event. The woman, as described in other reviews, does indeed sit and watch a TV in the back of the (empty, at the time) restaurant.
The spring rolls were fresh, crispy, and tasty. Contrary to some other reviews, the woman at the counter had no problem understanding me nor did I have any problems understanding her.
$20 for 4 orders of spring rolls may have been a bit expensive, but it was worth it for the occasion.
Wow, the other review on this place are like night and day, so I'll try to steer a middle ground on this review.
Free delivery seems like the standard for Chinese places that do so, thus we won't count that (although it is nice).
The food is pretty good. The broccoli beef is a good mix of both beef and broccoli. I was a little disappointed with their orange flavor chicken but that dish seems to vary from restaurant to restaurant. The chow mein is great and can be addictive if you've got a good appetite on you (like Juliane N.). My roommate was very satisfied with the General's Chicken.
I have a menu which has a "coupon" (think very small box, bottom corner) on the front that says free chow mein with a delivery order of $20 or more. They let you pick which kind of chow mein you want (even shrimp) and I've never had to give anyone the coupon. The prices are pretty reasonable and if you order three items, you'll find it tops the $20 limit. With free chow mein coming to you as well, for around $25, you'll have a good amount of food, certainly enough for at least three more meals.
Partial deduction for not having brown rice available.
The food definitely isn't the best and it can be very "saucey" but overall when I'm too lazy to go out and get something else or I'm hungover and really craving Chinese, this place hits the spot. The delivery has been rather consistent, albiet tending more towards the 45 minute side of things, but the delivery guys are always nice. I plan on keeping Lung Shan near the top of my list of Chinese options.
Granted I've only ordered one dish from this place I still love it. My friends all tell me I'm out of my mind.
PERFECT LUNCH:
Black bean sauce chicken with asparagus on rice. So cheap you'd think you're out of your mind too!
I agree that it's saucy, but it pools in the bottom of the container. So what?
I've sampled several chicken dishes and man... they were pretty good. The wonton soup is tasty; I could live on it, despite the broth being a little thin. I like that though because the taste is in the wontons. The portions are huge and enough for 3 meals. They have a great menu selection.
Great for take out. Average delivery to SoMa (where we're desperately lacking in good Chinese food) = 35 mins.
We've only used them for delivery which is free. We typically order the sizzling rice soup (which is good) and 2 entrees and get the free order of fried rice with our order. The woman will ask you what kind of fried rice you want.
Not the best Chinese Food, but not bad, either. Very fast and friendly delivery (35 minutes). And, no MSG is very important to me as I'm extremely sensitive to it .. this stuff gets snuck in by a lot of Asian restaurants but I can always tell (tight chest, difficulty breathing ...)
Dinner for our family (and a few days worth of leftovers) usually costs between $20 and $25.
Decidedly saucy and mediocre. Saucy-not-in-a-sexy-way-saucy. But they deliver to my house so I've eaten their food more often than I care to. Plus, how fucking often do we order from the same lady here that I have to spell my street name every time?
Luckily, we've found a great chinese place nearby that has usurped Lung Shan's admittedly questionable place in our household.
Oh and ps, thanks for the "free soup". It's gross. Won't miss it.
This is probably some of the worst chinese I've had in the US and that's saying alot. This is the only I've actually walked out of a restaurant without paying. I order a "Walnut Tofu" which was basically fried tofu covered in mayonaise sprikeld with walnuts for 8 dollars. When I refused to eat they were very unwilling to compromise to make a veggie chow fun with fried tofu; something I have never been refused before or since. Stay away, there are far better restaurants in the mission than this one.
Good hot Chinese food that's MSG free. Oh come on, how common is that, especially on Mission Street? They make your food when you order it; it's not just sitting around in one of them huge vats all day long. There's no decor to speak of, and I've only done pick-up, so I don't know about their service. But you can take advantage of their delivery service if you're busy to go there in person. They also have very bargain lunch specials. Mmmm.
OK, so I haven't actually tasted their food, but this review is more about the service provided. I decided to try this place out and ordered a simple soup, pot stickers and crab won ton's. The guy who took the order told me it would be 1/2 to 45 minutes for delivery......50 minutes later I called to tell them they might need to call me due to my ringer being out, and they said the delivery was on the way.....20 minutes later I called and they said the meal should be delivered any minute, when I complained they told me it would be any minute. After waiting 1 1/2 hours, I called to cancel the order. 10 minutes later, as I was leaving to go get dinner, they pulled up with my order.....1 hour and 45 minutes later. If I would have take the order, I'm sure the soup would have been cold and the pot stickers and won ton would have tasted old......
Terrible. The lady taking the order did not get my order correct and could not understand when I called to tell her I had the wrong item. They did not take a coupon I got in the mail one week earlier for some reason when it stated it expired in two months. The two dishes I got were not good. Only thing about this experience worth giving a star for was the delivery driver was a nice guy. Poor food and poor service. Happy trails Lung Shan.
So I have only had delivery, but the food is very fresh, the general tso's lightly breaded with great sauce, but you must pay a dollar for rice. Im new to the city does this happen everywhere? Anyway, the Hot and Sour soup was pretty good but kind of (black) peppery. But if you want some very good chinese delivery they are fast and nice. Enjoy!
Ordered delivery from here. The food is mediocre. It was edible but not amazing (as opposed to the inedible food at Red Jade). I am beginning to wonder whether other people know what good chinese food is.
