4 stars to the produce.  Best produce section in the Evergreen area.  Always fresh and well maintained.

The fresh bread/baked goods section looks great but isn't that appetizing.  Their fresh bread has a short shelf life.

The Latte's at Pete's Coffee inside Lunardi's are Horrible.  Their Drip Coffee is good and strong though.

I am ALL FOR San Jose having a little bit of Berkeley's bougieness.  My parents, who live just minutes away from this Lunardi's in SJ, *should* have access to Peet's Coffee, Acme Bread, and fancy pastries that aren't usually found in San Jo.  I hate to admit it, but I feel at home at this Lunardi's.  It's like shopping at Andronico's right in the heart of Berkeley.

Minus one star, however, for the obnoxious teenagers who know no better than to act like the little boogers that they are.  For instance, I was in line buying some fancy cakes to bring to my parent's home(btw, the pastries pale in comparison to the pastries I can find in Berkeley), but it took forever because of these 13-year-olds standing in line buying sushi and Peet's Coffee.  They were just loitering around the register, swaggering like they were cooler than sliced bread.  I must be getting old, but their conversation made me laugh.  When did junior high kids eat sushi without their parents around?  And when did Peet's Coffee replace coke and rootbeer?  I used to stand in line to buy ho hos or twinkies, not sushi and seaweed salad!
BUT cheers to Lunardi's for recognizing that San Jose deserves a little slice of goodness from my beloved B-town.

Lunardi's is great!  They have fresh produce, fruits, meats, everything.  If you want high quality ingredients for your food, then go for it.  I would suggest getting the "fresh" raw ingredients here, like meats of vegetables, but if its just boxed food, your local grocery should do.

Lunardi's also has great soup and oatmeal in the morning. I love oatmeal (; The soup can be fresh, depends when you go, and its not that pricey either. I want to try some of their deli stuff, but as mentioned in another review, it can be pricey.

But overall, if you need something that your local grocer might not carry, or if your palate demands the types of  freshness you won't find in any store but Lunardi's (& other higher priced grocery stores) then Lunardi's is good.

Just don't go when school lets out, its full of pre-yuppies who think that because they drink coffee and pastries, that they own the place.

Ideally I'd be at Whole Foods, but sometimes I don't like making the drive. Lunardi's holds me over.

The Deli makes great sandwiches, although the bread selection isn't as deep as other Delis.

The hot foods are great. I've had just about everything on the menu. Tri Tip, Chicken, etc...

The Split Pea Soup from the Deli is awesome.

    When I don't want Starbucks, a Peet's is inside.

    Great beer selection.

oh and the Organic produce is cool too.

(Can you tell that I'm a bachelor yet?)

Generally, I like to stay away from any teenager hot spot. Since Lunardi's is so near the high school AND the middle school, all the students come over and hang out here. So if you don't want to shop around obnoxious teenagers, a good time to go is before 2.

I'm not saying I'm any better than them, but if this conversation:

Girl 1: Oh my god, she's SUCH a hoe!
Girl 2: What are you talking about?
Girl 1: Like, you know. Did you like totally see her? I mean, she's my best friend and all, but she's such a sluuuuuut.
Girl 2: Seriously, huh. URGH. I JUST HATE HER.

Is something you hear regularly, then you'd want to stay away too.

For everything else, Lunardi's is clean and tidy. Features a variety of organic goodies! I buy my vegan mints here. There's rarely sales and the prices are a tad bit more expensive, but .. the quality is absolutely stunning.

Lunardi's also features Pete's Cafe and a lunch/soup bar. Friendly staff (most of the time). I love coming here in the morning to get coffee, when it's quiet and my fellow classmates are tucked in their beds, sleeping away their dreams of grandeur.

The only annoying thing is that if you look like a high school student, they'll assume that you're going to cause a huge ruckus and follow you around. And ask you a million questions.

    You know the drill.

This place has the freshest meat department around.  The butchers behind the counter are very helpful if you need advice on what type of meat you should use for whatever dish you're making.  The other day, I bought a slab of tri-tip for bbq'ing.  I told Mike, the butcher, what I was going to do with it.  He sliced it up for me, tossed the ends because he said it wouldn't be good for bbq and only charged me for the tri-tip he sliced.  You can't get that kind of service at one of those big chain supermarkets or an Asian market.

The produce is fresh.  The deli has the best cold-cuts and pate.  The aisles are clean and orderly.  And if the line ever gets pass 3-4 people long, they immediately open another line to get you in and out quickly.  Th only downside about Lunardi's is that it's a bit pricier than your local Albertson's/Safeway.  But you do get a better quality selection of food.

I love Lunardi's and the meat and produce department get 5 stars so do the staff.......

But what I am reviewing here is the deli and actually one deli guy in particular.  I have a small child - we go for walks, we walk to Lunardis its just down the way......while I was pregnant I started eating the sandwhiches there.......really good so about once a week I will walk over to Evergreen Square for a tasty bite.  I have never had a problem ever, the lady that works there is great, even the young bucks ....

..but YOU sir, the baldish one with the glasses......I am sorry you work in the deli and that sometimes you have to make a sandwhich or two.....but SERIOUSLY are you punishing me by taking literally 10 minutes to slap some meat between two pieces of bread.  I actually heard about your anticts from another friend who likes the taste of a freshly made (by someone else) sandwhich - but yesterday was my first experience.  You took too long guy - you did get the order right so I considered giving you 4 stars but had to hold back when it was clear that you were dilberately slow becaue you had to leave you back cubby to give me service - I kinda wanted to ask if I could do it myself - probably would have been faster.

So be on the look out for this guy - slower then molasses on a cold day doesnt even come close to describing his sandwhich craftmanship.

okay, so lunardi's only gets one additional star because they have a peet's coffee inside.  there's a starbucks right next to evergreen valley college, but i rather go out of my way just for some great coffee that will keep me awake rather than some bland crap that makes me hella sleepy.

okay, so like there's an e.coli scare in spinach, yet i found spinach in my chef salad! wtf. nicole, you cashier lady, you. next time remind me that i need to get a fork or else i'll have to be eating salad with my fingers for the second time.

and like, one time, i bought two peaches from here, confiding in their products because of their reputation.  so i'm at home, thinking that i'm eating healthy but i had to throw them away because the skin just peeled off because it felt like it was bruised inside when it just tasted like beer. yeah, i had a bite of a fermented peach.

yes, to the middle aged soccer moms who can afford to shop here, continue to because i can't afford a four dollar box of kashi go-lean cereal. let me stop by whole foods for that.

    yo.
    1) peet's coffee owns starbucks by so much.
    2) wide selection of `wine`. good for wine lovers.
    3) its a cooler version of alberstons?safeway?or even luckys?
    4) fruits and veggies are a little more fresher than your regular markets but its just good service and good atmosphere.

When i heard they were closing, i was in utter disbelief. I love that place, had a lot of memories when me and my friends would go down to lunardis just to buy some chips and jones sodas and chill in that square area. lunardis was the heart of the shopping plaza, now that its close that place is a total ghost town. the space is still vacant, and i'm hoping they'd open a trader joe's or some other organic grocery store there. their meals ready to go was delicious for 8 bucks you could have a choice of freshly made pasta, chicken, steak, mac n cheese and many other choices. ahh i miss that place for what it was worth

When this location first opened up years ago, my family and I would make it our Sunday ritual to peruse the aisles of Lunardi's just for fun.  We would always find something-- a drink, a dessert, something-- that we wouldn't find at Albertson's.  We don't go there as often, especially now that our family has grown from 3 to 5 mouths (we have to go to Alby's or Costco to get things in bulk now), but if we need a specialty item, have a sushi craving and nothing else is open,  or just want to avoid the long lines at Albertson's, I'll go there.  I also go there when milk is on sale.  LOL  We go through 6 gallons a week so when they have Berkeley Farms on sale for 2 for $5, I'm there.  I recently discovered their Indian sauces in the deli.  I've only tried the Vindaloo sauce, but it's very good, mildly spicy, and quick.  The deli also has good clam chowder, and kids under 5 years old get a free cookie from the bakery (my 3 yr-old-loves that and it up makes up for her always getting scared of the gnome statues near the rear entrance).

My only complaint is that they close at 9pm but they're alot closer than the nearest Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.

I come often since it is across the street from work. Its a tiny store but the fruits are really good and their hot deli section is good too. A WIDE range of items to choose from. They are expensive but its the only thing around really. Their sandwiches are huge, enough for two people to eat off of.

I gotta give props to this place because they have some quality meats and cheeses that give life to my sandwiches.  The havarti cheese is my fav.  Also, tasty and quick dinner fixes are available here - they have stuff ranging from mac and cheese, clam chowder, roasted chicken, to even bbq ribs.  as far as the groceries go, this place is convenient for quick grocery shopping, just a few blocks from my house.  their prices are a bit higher than safeway and albertson's, but then again, it's more on the higher end, so go figure.    oh, and they have a pete's coffee inside too.

I like Lunardi's for things you can't find @ Safeway but don't want to drive all the way for a Whole Foods.  It's tucked a little bit of ways away from the main drag of East San Jose, but worth the drive.  Its new, very clean and everyone's friendly!

I live near evergreen closer to foodmaxx and i must say, quality, ambiance and service trumps a cheap cut of meat or produce any day. The management hires only qualified workers who are competent.THough it may seem a bit fou frou it is actually not. other grocery stores hire convicts. done.

Ok, this was one of those strange events that couldn't be planned, it just had to happen.  Was out with the wife one day, checking out former vineyards that had been turned into homes and found this new village being created in East San Jose, a square, shops, all of that.  Pretty interesting.  The market was a Lunardi's, my first (they don't come much to the east bay) and we were blown away.  First, they had a wine tasting bar IN the supermarket.  Now, for a couple of wine-aholics like us this is like dangling fresh, plump mice in front of our cats!  So of course we tasted (and bought).  And then, cruising the aisles of this market we encountered Faygo.  For those who don't know (like me) Faygo is a local soda from Michigan, where my wife is from.  I didn't know what it was either until my wife started screaming "RED POP! RED POP!" (they call soda "pop" in MI, go figure) and goes tearing off in the direction of the Faygo display.  Needless to say, the drink was good and we soon saw this store had everything.  Worth driving from another town for?  Maybe not, but this scores 5 stars for the memories and for the fact that IF I did live near there I'd shop there 1-2 times a week easy.
