I cannot wait to have a house to fill with unique, amazing light fixtures.

The staff is so friendly, helpful and really encouraging in terms of reassuring your style.  I also love the little hob knob stuff -- I can spend hours here!

And so began Ceiling Lamp Quest.

A friend needed a ceiling lamp and we sought after this place for ideas.  We drove by this place several times and were impressed with what we saw inside.  We decided to do something different and went inside where we found a lovely selection of ceiling lamps and plethora of knick knacks.  Firmly armored with ideas we continued our quest.

This review is for the on-line shopping site.
Ordered a LED lamp two months ago and never got any e-mails/calls from them informing us that the manufacturer was out of the model.
I got the latter information from other sites, they did not even bother letting me know. I have no intention of giving my business nor recommending them to anyone ever again.

Admittedly, the stuff they sell is lovely, but the service, from not one but two salespeople was curt and, at one point, rude. We won't be going back.

Ordered a chandelier online.  Eight days later, received a curt phone call that the model was not available.  No apology, no offer to help find another, just -- we're calling to tell you we're canceling your order.  It took over a week to send just a kiss-off?  Never again -- lots of other lighting choices on the web w/ similar or better selections -- certainly better service.

I have purchased four light fixtures here. The kitchen light was from their clearance outlet- a glass pendant regular 267 dollars, marked down to 89 dollars, perfect condition (but a bitch to install). SCORE! The hallway light was from the showroom, and the sales guy was super cool and actually talked me into it as I was afraid it was too funky. I have also purchased a bathroom light and a bedroom light. I am perfectly pleased with all of the them, the customer service, and can't wait to be able to afford more lighting- one bedroom and a hallway left. I have had many compliments on the lights. One guest was impressed as she said that Home Depot type fixtures are uninspiring.

For some reason, my installer and I have difficulty installing these lights. They are hard to install, much harder than Home Depot lights. Yesterday's install took waaaay too long. Everything has to be just so for it to install properly.

UPDATED - 2/20/08 (See Update below edited original post)

Hot merchandise. Low level customer service. As a recent transplant from San Francisco, my realtor recommended Lumens for replacement lighting fixtures for my 1930's brick Tudor. Though several larger distributors had the Robert Abbey fixtures I wanted, I thought it would be nice to keep the transaction in "the family" and even better to support a small local business. I wanted to build a relationship and use their expertise on later projects.

My first visit went OK...but the dude I worked with had a slight 'tude, appeared snobbish, and was overly familiar with the jokes and quips when he figured out that I too was gay. I didn't want a date, I wanted a chandelier and sconces.

I ordered the items, they arrived, I picked them up -- all without incident.

Even though I had a so-so experience with my initial purchase, I went back to look at other items in their vast selection of merchandise. Again, I received a so-so level of customer service. Frankly, when I'm spending top dollar for lighting fixtures that I can purchase elsewhere at a lower price (Hello Lamps Plus), the level of customer service should be stellar.

Today, I decided to go back, yet again, to try to get some info on other fixtures. I stood [at the counter] while two sales folks where dinkin' around with the computer, a third was at a desk also at a computer, and a fourth was talking with a customer. [After] receiving nothing as much as a "We'll be right with you" or "Hello," I decided to take my money someplace else.

So, while the merchandise and the showroom may be high style, the customer service needs a lot of work.

Lumens staff should not be exempt from providing a high level of customer service regardless of the number of customers in the store. Believe me, it wasn't crowded this morning. There were three customers, counting me, and six employees. It's not a stretch to expect that ONE of those employees would at least acknowledge the person standing at the counter and let that person know someone would assist shortly.

[Lumens' employees should] just say hello and, if you're busy, let [the customer] know you'll be free in a few moments.

**UPDATE**UPDATE**UPDATE**UPDATE**UPDATE**UPDATE** UPDATE**

I recently received a thoughtful response to my negative post. The owner apologized for my experiences at his store and provided an explanation of the situation. He went on to list all the changes that had been made to the company and to the space to ensure a high level of customer service.

It takes guts to respond to a negative review and takes even more guts to actually implement changes. Most folks brush off bad reviews and proceed with business as usual. I was really impressed and though I used the "three strikes, you're out" cliche, I'll return to Lumens and give them another try with my next project. I urge others to try them out also.

A great store with fabulous products. Love the people, love the displays, love the Alessi cat bowls!

At Lumens I found four craftsman-style outdoor fixtures that are the perfect blend of traditional and modern styling. In addition to the many options displayed in the showroom, I was shown many other products in a wide range of prices. The Forecast lights I chose were shipped directly to me and installed without problem.

I also love the non-lighting products. My current project has me looking for a rug and I've found a great selection of fabulous area rugs available on the website: Mat-The-Basics and Angela Adams products are equally fabulous and the prices in line with what I've seen in area department and home furnishings stores.

It's a fun place to shop - unique items and friendly people. My experiences with the staff at Lumens have been superb and I'll continue to go to Lumens for unique and interesting items for my home.

1.  LUMENS

Feeling the need to be cool in more ways than one, I was advised to check out Lumens.  The target?  An LED lamp.  Not that I'm trying to reel you in to Lumens, as mentioned in other reviews, the mere viewing of the items online will not do both the buyer and seller any good.  After cruising through their website, actually go down there and check things out.

Their showroom and inventory is mostly lighting products but it looks like their furniture and personal products are growing too.  The key words for the stuff here?  Innovation + unique design.

Merritt went out of her way to help me with my advised request to check everything out.  This meant getting us into a dark room to audition all of the LED lamps that piqued my interest.  With the meeting/design rooms fully occupied, Merritt set us up in a foyer/lunch room, which led to the bathrooms.  With the only the lamps on, we must've looked like a pair of psychos - the kinds with serious expressions, holding flashlights under their heads.  It was a blast, startling many on their way to to bathrooms.  Yes, we scared the $h!+ out  of people ;)

I finally picked the LED lamp that best suited my needs.  I thanked Merritt for going out of her way to either assemble the lamps right out of the box, or having to climb things to get the other lamps out of their nested displays.  Pretty damned good performance, coming from a woman dressed in a nice suit.

Head out to Lumens.  They go out of their way to make sure you have the right products that will fit into your building/home.

Negatives
- Obviously, with all of the great lighting products on "showcase" display, I felt like I needed to be careful, as not to knock anything over.
- Innovation + unique design here also means that most of the things here are not quite mass produced.  Basically you're paying R&D prices, which is why I docked Lumens 1 star.  Value is not part of Lumens' vocabulary.  However, as more dollars have been making its way into my wallet these days, I'm considering becoming a regular here.

Positives
+ 1/2 a block down K Street, Lumens actually has a parking lot.
+ Impressive help with selecting products when you need it.

Kudos to Gretchen S. for sending me to this corner store.

2.  THE PRODUCT ITSELF - KONCEPT'S Z-BAR LED LAMP

My rating for this lamp?  5 stars.  This IS of course, as of the date of the review.  LED lighting may be someday mainstream and the this lamp'll someday be fossil fuel...

Using the part smallest room in the house as office space, a 60W table lamp was making things a little too hot.  Cooler solutions required.  This Z-Bar LED lamp is my contribution to "global cooling."

http://www.lumens.com/...

http://www.amazon.com/...

Much much cooler than the 60W incandescent, even if the LED bar can get hot, I can wrap my hand around the light bar and not burn any of my skin off.  How's that for cool?  The room no longer heats up.  Problem resolved.

Boasting single digit power consumption, around 7 hours use of this lamp is the equivalent of 1 hour's use of the 60W incandescent.  There is NO guilt in leaving this lamp on for extended periods of time.

This lamp has a 360 degree base rotation, an extension arm, and the LED segment can rotate 360 degrees also.  The connector to the LED segment is a 1/4" stereo headphone male jack.  In English, with this lamp clamped to the back end of my computer armoire, this thing can reach anywhere within a 40" reach and position at many crazy angles.

Negatives
- With the super bright, cool white LED's, the light quality is actually a freezing cold white.  This is the kind of light quality some women have told me that they'd rather not see themselves in, such as the cool white fluorescent lights.
- Used as ambient light, it looks more like a 40W system, yet no problem, it lights up the room well enough for me to get around in.
- $139 out the door for a desk lamp!?  Bullschtein!  Wait for these LED doodads to go into mass production.

Positives
+ Used as a spotighting desk lamp, this'll turn night into day.
+ Looks better and sleeker in person.
+ This thing is fun, easily manipulating it to different angles and positions.
+ At 15,000 hours of bulb life, Merritt pointed out that I'll probably want a new lamp before the end of its lifespan anyway.
+ Now I can literally stay cool.  LED's generally don't generate a whole lotta heat.
+ Super low power consumption.
+ Does not have that high frequency, headache inducing flicker like fluorescent lighting has.

Hmmm.  Listed as black, the actual color is dark gray.

Once again, kudos to Gretchen S. for showing me all of the great websites on LED lighting.

Big, bright, beautiful, but expensive.  The lighting choices at Lumens are certainly top-notch, but the selection is geared toward wealthy people with very large houses (and high ceilings).  I was impressed with the styles and quality, but nothing here would fit in my modest living room or my equally-modest budget.  I spent quite a while wandering the aisles and craning my neck before a salesperson approached me.  She was polite, not at all pushy, and she quickly backed off when I told her I was just browsing.

If you'd rather not get a cramp in your neck, you can peruse Lumens' huge inventory on their website.  Seeing the fixtures in person, though, is more impressive.  If I ever buy a mansion with 15-foot ceilings, I'll be back.

I've been here a few times before and was disappointed with the customer service at this place but gave it another try.  It was December 24th and I was driving by.  I needed to get an unusual Christmas present for my boyfriend who has everything and, in a last ditch effort to find something, I stopped at Lumens.  I hesitated but I gave it a try anyway.

I walked in and though I was the only customer in the store, I was totally ignored - everyone seemed mesmerized by something on their computer screens.

A salesperson walked by briskly and before she went into the apparent cyberspace trance the others were in, I asked if she could assist me.  From that point, my experience was perfectly pleasant --  nothing like SFDance's experience, above.  Wait, that was until I asked about the Christmas items going on sale after the holiday.  I'm a big fan of the Christmas Crap but at a post-holiday deep-dish discount.  (Unlike others I know, I seem to remember where I put it come the following year.)  So, I asked.  The sales woman didn't know and she asked the MOD (manager-on-duty) and she didn't know either.  Frankly, she seemed quite put off that I would dare inquire about such a trivial issue.  She was dismissive and preoccupied with something on that silly computer.   She headed behind the counter and started rat-a-tat-tat-typing away.  What's with these computers at this place?

I don't get it.  In the end, I never got an answer to my question.  I guess I'll never know because I'll never shop there again.  On the way back to my car, I thought about my prior bad experiences at this frickin' place and went into a tizzy.

If time hadn't been so short, I would have demanded a refund and taken my money to Lofings, down the street.  I'm all for patronizing local businesses but not at the expense of being dismissed or ignored.  Hell, I'll even shop at Lamps Plus before I go to Lumens again.

THE ONE BRIGHT SPOT* when it comes to modern design in midtown. Once, there was Atmosphere, on J Street, but they closed, and I think became a part of Lumens. It's hard to miss the place, every lamp, chandelier, and pendant is left on. It's not all modern, though. All types and styles of lighting can be found, from traditional to modern. My tastes falls toward the more modern side, so a lot of the baroque-influenced acrylic lighting caught my eye the other day. And that clear acrylic stool designed by Karim Rashid calls my name each time I drive by! I just wish I could afford it! The thing I hate most about great design is that it costs so damn much! On the other hand, I hope that some day I will be the one selling his crap for hundreds of dollars each.

Oh, they also carry FLOR carpet tiles. The cheap way to make your own custom area rug. And speaking of area rugs, if you've got the cash/credit, you can find Angela Adams here too.

Now all midtown needs is a nice modern accessories store, like Friend in SF.

* - Get it? "Bright spot". And it's a lighting store!

Best place in town to get fixtures.   I am restoring a 1900 Victorian and have worked with Zack on each fixture we have bought.   The guy has great suggestions and the quality of the lights is top.   If they don't have it in the showroom then they can order it.

I will never go anywhere else for lights.

I have ordered a couple of lamps from their website, and I must say that their customer service is EXCELLENT.  I have worked with Amanda a couple of times, and she has always been super helpful and friendly.

I can't recommend ordering from them highly enough, you won't be disappointed in the service you'll get when you finally decide you MUST have that LAMP!
