So, I have a brand new New Years resolution: to gain at least 10 pounds this year by coming to Lulu's on a very regular basis.
This place is everything I had dreamed and more. My friend (who is not vegan) and my vegan self walk in and the super-friendly girl behind the counter was happy to let us sample as many flavors as we wanted! We tried the maple ice cream and cake batter soft serve (both delicious), before settling on a sundae with cookies and cream and chocolate ice creams, hot fudge, rainbow sprinkles, whipped cream and, of course, a cherry on top. My friend was extremely skeptical of "cashew ice cream," but this skepticism promptly went away when we had our first bites (and then proceeded to inhale the rest of the sundae). "How do they do it?" was then the topic of conversation, along with plans for me to become obese by 2011.
Everyone should go and if you are lactose-intolerant or vegan or simply looking for delicious ice cream--run there as soon as possible, even if it's freezing out.
The ONLY downside: there is barely any seating available. The shop is absolutely adorable, but there are roughly 6 stools (and barely any standing room).
I'm not going to lie - vegan scares me. The phrases "dairy-free" and "all-natural"? Well, while I like to pretend that I am all about healthy, eco-friendly eating . . . those phrases tend to be sort of a turn-off too, especially when it comes to dessert. But I was so very pleasantly surprised by Lula's.
Walking into the shop is like taking a step back in time . . . you know, if they had used the term "gluten-free" in 1914. They're generous with the samples and in all honesty, even this suburban-raised palate enjoyed every bite, maybe even more so than regular ice cream. Shocking.
I have to thank Lula's for really changing my perspective about vegan food. I'll definitely be a bit more open-minded now when it comes to those scary phrases.
This is a favorite spot of my fiancée's and mine. It's worth it to go out of the way to drop by, even in below freezing weather. All the flavor are amazing and hand crafted and mostly use a cashew base instead of the usual soy. My fiancée always gets a malt with cake batter soft serve. We finish that in about 10 seconds. Would be worth it to savor more, haha. Anyway, the staff is extremely nice and friendly and you can sample any flavor before you buy it. I also love the old fashion cups and silverware, not to mention those Eco freindly reusable and adorable metal straws for your shake.
Go here! But just make sure you don't get in line before me.
The ice cream and many of the toppings are made in-house and they are extraordinary. There is a rotating menu of i/c flavors (soft serve and hard) that numbers at about a dozen options on any given day. The available toppings vary as well, ranging from dark chocolate peanut butter cups to caramel sauce... with all kinds of hot fudge, marshmallow, and crumbled cookies in between. You can build a completely different sundae every time you visit!
It is a true ice cream shoppe: complete with a counter, stools, silverware, and glass parfait dishes in every shape and size. The atmosphere is an updated throwback, with rows upon rows of delectable goodies lining the shelves in sparkling jars, enticing you to create an impressive concoction. The owners and staff complete the welcoming vibe with their warmth and friendliness, as well as their beautiful preparation of edible masterpieces.
Lula's is at once two things:
1) A simple, neighborhood shoppe where you can grab any traditional ice cream treat you crave: cup, cone, shake, float, egg cream, banana split, flurry, etc.
2) A veritable salon where you can settle in to dig into your imaginative creation while discussing whatever you fancy with the friendly clientele.
Vegans: rejoice, non-vegans: be amazed. Lula's Sweet Apothecary is like nowhere else.
"Yo, I hooked up with that cute girl with last night. Homie, great kisser."
"Brah, you see "her" Adam's apple? That was a dude."
"Meh, she's still an awesome kisser."
I guess I cannot always trust Yelp. Like some others, I see 4 1/2 stars and dessert. My sweet tooth is actually gone these days. Everything I suggest needs salt. You can call it a 'savory tooth.' I prefer calling it 'saber tooth.'
I split my favorite flavor, rocky road, with a friend. It was really good rocky road. Almond, marshmallow, and chocolate ice cream. Can anyone complain?
Not until I came home and read the reviews did I find out that the Lula's is vegan. Wow, that's really surprising. I seriously could not tell. However, am I vegan? And are most of the people that go there vegan? Nope. So the place doesn't really need to be vegan to make awesome ice cream. I'd imagine that the ice cream would be better or just as good if not vegan.
Even though 'she' was a really good kisser, I'd prefer if it was actually a girl instead of a guy.
The price wasn't bad at $3.75 for a scoop. You can get awesome toppings. The place has a great old school decor. The server looked like he had taken a time machine from 1920 and brought old time folk and blues albums with him to play as the music.
A cute place to bring a date for dessert. The ice cream is very good, but nothing to cream your pants over.
i *l.o.v.e* lulas!
it cracks me up when people bitch about the offerin's here not tasting like, say, cold stone...
people! this is VEGAN ice cream..
if you don't want vegan ice cream, than don't mosey into a vegan ice cream shop and order vegan ice cream! i mean, really?
now that i've got that off my chest.
this place has my heart....
it's vibe is that of an old time ice cream parlor... and the flavors.... ohhhhh, the flavors....
i have not yet had-a-one that i didn't love.
lula's... how i think of you often... but can only visit every so often...
if you want less guilt from a guilty pleasure... prepare to be wowed at lulas...
it is damn delicious non-dairy ice cream.
the service is always with a smile... and the product is top notch.
that's all i can say.
This is the best random find ever for me in NY. Initially I hadn't even realized that I was eating vegan ice cream until I looked it up later! The ice cream was smooth and flavorful and the interior of the place really lets you unwind and feel like a kid again sitting on the barstools. Not to mention the owner is super friendly and easy to talk to.
Recommend it to any and everyone.
I miss this place. I never get to go... been just twice, and somehow the people around me keep persuading me to go to 16 handles for the 120,948th time.
I'm not vegetarian, and definitely not vegan, but i love their peanut butter fudge and the mint chocolate chip. Creamy, rich and sweet... the way ice cream should be. And yes, I looked on yelp to see what I should get before I went. I'm so good.
I also prefer this stuff over Stogo (sp?)... and I like the old school decor.
I'm not a fan of eating ice cream in the winter, but Lulu's hits the spot every time.
Hands down the best vegan soft-serve I've ever eaten (especially the cake batter flavor!) in addition to many cashew based flavors. They also make banana splits and sundaes.
All of this served to you in an early 1900's - style sweet shop. The service is always friendly (if a little slow) so have patience if there's a line - I promise it's worth it.
3.5
Server was very friendly. Kindly offered samples of whatever, I choose the cake batter (made with soy)...really good. He offered to see if I wanted to try anything else, I just stuck with the cake batter and got a cut of that. Very smooth, nice creamy ice cream and love that its vegan friendly. Cool little spot lots of vintage signs on the wall, and older coke bottles in the front. I will definitely stop by with the girlfriend sometime again soon.
This place has the best ice cream in all of New York City. Homemade, mostly soy-free, vegan, and always delicious. Try the cake batter soft-serve (usually the only ice cream made with soy), you will NOT be disappointed.
Service is wonderful, atmosphere is charming, the price is right (for the quality of ice cream you're getting).
Don't be a chump. Go to Lula's.
Vegan + Ryan = No thank you.
However, Lula's is hands down the finest ice cream I have ever tasted. The cake batter soft serve has proven to be consistently scrump (all 10 or so times I have eaten it), and this place has earned me major brownie points with my vegan friends.
Try it. You'll love it.
I'm not even a vegan, but I get cravings for the cake batter soft serve. I also love the peanut butter fudge ice cream, and I've had yummy fresh-made cherry sodas here too. I love that they will let you sample little spoonfuls of EVERYTHING if you so desire! My roommate loves to go here, I got a giant sundae once went I went with him and I couldn't even finish it. I will probably go a lot more once it's warm out again...
Yes - it really is that good. It doesn't taste like something vegan, just like really delicious ice cream. My boyfriend and I shared the mint chocolate chip. It took us 3 tries to get here - it's closed Monday, and closed at 10 on Wednesday. But finally we made it, and it was so worth it.
Lula's serves the best ice cream I have ever tasted, and it happens to be 100% vegan. They offer a wonderful variety of flavors daily, including delicious soft serve options. Their ice creams are either nut based, or soy based; I have tasted both, and cannot tell the difference.
Being an enthusiast of anything old-timey, Lula's is my ideal atmosphere to enjoy an ice cream sundae. The staff is warm and welcoming, and always prepared to give excellent flavor combination suggestions, sample flavors, and give ingredient information.
I usually go for a regular sundae, which includes two scoops of ice cream, one topping, one sauce, and a (coconut milk based) whipped cream, with a cherry on top! It never fails to make me happy. My favorite flavors are cookies and cream, a delicious vanilla with big chunks of chocolate cookie, peanut butter fudge, a rich peanut butter ice cream laced with the perfect amount of chocolatey deliciousness, and root beer (which is strange, considering I don't really like root beer very much). I usually choose marshmallow sauce, but last night I went with Lula's caramel sauce, which is made in store, and I was blown away. Toppings range from vegan gummy bears to a variety of cream cookies to nuts to good old fashioned rainbow sprinkles. In addition to my favorite double scoop sundae, Lula's offers brownie sundaes, banana splits, hot chocolate, malts, and sugar cones.
It is impossible for me to be in the East Village and NOT stop by Lula's to enjoy a sundae, listen to 1950's tunes, and chat with the wonderful people consistently occupying the vintage stools.
We went of a food tour of the area, and when choosing another place to go, we decided on dessert at Lula's. Man, what a terrible idea. I have a monster sweet tooth, almost nothing phases me and I like my ice cream sweet and flavorful, "alive," I like to call it. Generally homemade icecream is tops, especially places like the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory. We didn't know this place was vegan save for the things they had around in the store, and even then, that shouldn't be any reason to skip it, right? Wrong. I tried the Toffee Popcorn and ended up with the Cookie Dough, which caught me off guard because the Cookie Dough flavor is actually flavored like cookie dough, it isn't like normal ice cream that has cookie dough chunks. So that sucked. On top of that, the ice cream was not sweet at all, and had a very dead, "meh" attitude to it, sort of like "here's the flavor, now eat it," not like mango ice cream at CICF, where it's mango, it's sweet, full of flavor, a treat for the whole tongue. In all, I would heartily warn anyone who likes good ice cream to stay far away from this place unless you like boring, soulless ice cream (or are a vegan, but then you're used to this sort of thing).
2 stars because the dude serving ice cream was a time warp and the decor was clean and clever. Still never going back though.
Absolutely delicious vegan ice cream and treats.
The staff, interior and vibe are all cute as a button. The mint chocolate, banana walnut, and red-eye ice creams were all freaking awesome. A banana walnut malt came in an old-fashioned soda glass with a stainless steel straw. How classy is that?
As for the price, 3.25 for a scoop (which is generous) and about $6 for a malt with three scoops of ice cream? You can rack up that much in no time at the Stinkberry and nobody even blinks. I don't mind paying for vegan treats of this quality and neither should you! YUM!
Lula's is amazing! Everything there is super adorable and the ice cream is amazing. Cake batter soft serve, you gotta be kidding me! I'm all about it. I almost got seconds to take back with me.
It was a little bit tricky to get to late-ish subway-wise because some stations weren't running and it was already a bit far from any line, as far as I could tell, but the trek was SO worth it. I can't wait to come back!
They're also super gluten-free-friendly, with gluten-free cones and actual knowledge about little hidden things that celiacs can't have.
I love it here! I'm really into vegan and raw food and have been hunting for vegan dessert places every since I moved to NY. I still haven't gone through my list yet, but out of all the dessert places I've gone to so far, Lula's is definitely the most surprisingly delicious. Most of the ice cream they serve are nut-based, and I think the flavors are constantly changing. I've had the brownie sundae both times (I am ice cream fanatic) and loved it! The best part of it is, it has the creamy texture and sweetness of regular ice cream but is much healthier and lighter on your waistline.
The only downside is the incredibly cramped space inside the store. There's barely room to stand, much less sit down and eat. It's not a problem if the place is pretty vacant, but I can only imagine the mayhem during peak hours.
But vegan or not, definitely try this place! So worth it!
I'm not vegan.. not vegetarian.. so therefore me the ice-cream taste a little bit weird to me...how can you make ice-cream without milk?
Vegan ice-cream just doesnt sound or taste right to me. I do want to give credits to friendly staff and they allow you try everything.. so for all the vegans out there.. you might want to check it out.
Personally, I'm not a fan simply I because I have an option go for regular ice-cream
I relied too much on Yelp this time, I didn't really read anything beyond "ice cream" and 4 1/2 stars. Had I continued to read I would have found out that this is vegan ice cream, for those of you who don't know vegans don't eat dairy so this is actually not ice "cream" but rather made by blending water and cashews (or occasionally soy beans). This if you're wondering doesn't make the ice cream any lower in calories so it's not anymore diet friendly then regular ice cream. I had two scoops, one was pretty creamy (though you wouldn't mistake the taste or texture for regular ice cream it was still fairly similar) and the other had more of an icy texture (which is what I expected having one of the main ingredients as water). They did have some inventive flavors like pb&j but it wasn't too appetizing looking at the ice cream containers in the case and everything was kind of crumbly and falling apart (not like any ice cream you'd typically see).
In addition to hard ice "cream" they also have soft serve, flurries, and some hot drinks. Prices are also pretty reasonable.
Lula's is a tiny place but it's really quite elegant and classy, the people are really nice and for what they do they do it quite well. If I was a vegan I'd probably give them 5 stars.
I immediately loved this place from the second I walked in. The old school feel with the built in bar stools, glass ice cream dishes, and metal shovel style spoons not to mention the guy behind the counter with the big glasses and bowtie on. I'm not a vegan but I've had vegan desserts before and they can be very hit or miss. Lula's definitely hit--in fact they sank my battleship. They're very generous with the samples so feel free to ask to try some before you make your decision. Just follow Larry David's rule of no more than two samples or risk being labeled a sample abuser. I'd recommend the soft serve style ice cream as the hard ice cream is a little thick and can be tough to finish. Both pack a wonderful flavor and are a nice treat for anyone vegan or not.
ALLERGIC TO NUTS?.... BEWARE!!! Most of their ice creams are made of NUTS!
But after that said...this place was very cute! I loved that you can try as many flavors as you wish and the staff were very nice :)
This place reminds me a of old fashioned fountain soda shop :)
A little disapointed that they open only from 3pm onwards...a little too late for my taste.
I liked their cake batter and their strawberry cheesecake swirl! Yum!
I'd make a terrible vegan.
But then again, if being vegan forced me to have regular dessert infusions from Lula's Sweet Apothecary, it might not be all that bad.
With only eight diner-style stools inside - plus a bench perfect for balmy outdoor weather - it can get tight in this East Village ice creamery. Waiting in line, I couldn't help but notice the old-time feeling about Lula's: from the signage hanging, to their classic glasses, down to even employee uniforms, Lula's invokes memories of a bygone era, yet, they've only been around for a year.
Lula's dishes out organic, vegan ice cream in a cone or cup. Vegan ice cream may sound strange to ice cream purists, but my dairy-free cup of mint chocolate chip ($3.75; cash only) was sweetly pleasant and refreshingly minty, with a soft consistency, even for ice cream. While indulging, don't forget fixings! Cookies or sprinkles never hurt anyone. (There's a carafe of water if you need it.) I finished my ice cream in no time, and wished I had more.
Like their ice cream, service is outstanding. My friend got a cup, then headed to the washroom. Right away, co-owner Blythe offered to put it in the freezer until she returned. Staffer Brad shared a bit of the place's history with me, along with a sample of bright-pink bubble gum ice cream. When I tasted it I had a flashback, baseball cards filling my mind. I told Brad, and he mentioned that I wasn't the first to say that.
Lula's took me to a happy place for a moment, and for that, I'm grateful.
Love, Love, Love this place. Vegan ice cream that is so yummy it makes you wonder if it's not vegan. The ice cream is made from nuts. The staff is very friendly. You can sample a taste of 1 or all of the ice creams before you make the big decision. The space is tiny, but otherwise I highly recommend this spot.
This place made me feel like a kid again! Everything here seems so authentic and almost 'magical' even. At Lula's you don't just get an ordinary scoop of ice-cream, you get an ice-cream celebration. I had a root bear float (with organic root beer - yum!) with butter pecan ice-cream and it was, needless to say, amazing. The foam from the organic root bear mixed with melt-y ice-cream was a concoction in and of itself.
The owner is also super sweet and both her and the other staff are very generous with samples, as one other person mentioned. I didn't want to feel like I was abusing their sampling privilege, but they were happy to let me try a bit of whatever caught my eye. I got a sample of a special flavor they had, I believe it was something along the lines of vanilla/lavender/raspberry... it was amazing! I need to go back and get a full serving.
So. Much. Fun.
First, the place is absolutely darling. From the old soda-fountain signs to the high collared employees.
Second, those employees are courteous, patient, and generous with the samples. The lad that helped me while I wrote down nearly the entire menu to take to my mum waiting in the street (not wheelchair accessible, kids) was just a delight. He even helped me carry our sundaes outside.
Third, uh: Delicious. Really, I could have just left it at that. Two of those stars are for the Maple and Waffle flavour alone. Plus, hot fudge? Hello, dream-come-true. (Have to admit, however, I was not a fan of the cake-batter soft-serve. Texturally, it missed the mark. A bit gritty, and too soft. Stick to the hard pack, which they have nearly mastered.) Ooh, and those glazed walnuts. Get those.
Fourth, they had Go-Max-Go candy bars, which I have literally sought across the country -and they were worth the search.
Last, Delicious. Again. Yes. And Fun. Fulicious.
Yes. Fulicious.
I want to bathe in Lula's ice cream. It's just that good.
The shop is adorable-- tiny and it can get crowded, for sure, but I love the decor. The proprietors are very sweet and will give you as many samples of the different flavors as you desire. I love that they have nut-based and coconut-based ice creams, as well as a few soy flavors. The flavors have been different every time I've been, which is both exciting and sad when you get too attached to a particular flavor.
The most important part, of course, is that the ice cream is mindblowingly creamy and delicious, and loved by vegans and omnnivores alike. Whether it's in a cone, a sundae, or just in a dish (with a topping at least, come on), I'm pretty much in love with it and if I could afford to move to New York right now so I could eat it every day, I would.
(And yes, it's better than Stogo.)
Tasty. Interesting and inventive flavors. Friendly service and cool old-timey ambience.
Cake Batter soft serve was surprisingly good. Will go back to try other menu items ...
El-Yew-El-Ay LULLAAAAAA!!!
Man, I was wandering the east village craving some soft serve and yelp did not let me down. The cake batter / chocolate soft serve swirl with hard sprinkles was fan-friggin-tastic. I sampled some of their other ice creams and I'm definitely coming back to get some chocolate with chopped hazelnuts.
I was so excited walking into this place. It is the epitome of a tiny old fashioned ice cream parlor with several swirly stools, a menu with so many deliciously questionable flavors, and really nice employees.
After trying sample after sample (which they were more than happy to offer), I settled on a random combination of Peanut Butter & Jelly ice cream with gummy bear topping. All the samples I tried were yummy. They keep all their toppings a vintage-y chest of drawers behind them and apply them on in such a way that you feel like your ice cream is super special .
They had more complex options like flurries and shakes, but I probably wouldn't be able to finish them because they are ha-uuuuge. Love this place! I am also not vegan.
Wait the mint chip ice cream I had here was vegan & gluten free? That usually means bland cardboard flavored stuff but the ice cream here was delish. I love the quaint little spot it inhabits and it feels so old timey. Next time I'll have to try the soft serve and/or a float b/c I saw others with those and they made me wanna order more but alas, my visit here was just a personal appetizer before a meal with my sis and friends so I couldn't indulge like I plan to the next time!
Organic and veggan ice cream for the sweetest tooth. I still prefer my favorite brands Häagen-Dazs as well as Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, but after a fellow avid Yelper who were in town I decided to give it a try. Despite of not being a fan of organic and vegetarian ice cream as I'm a proud carnivore, I admit Lula's is quite tasty.
Service is friendly and personable. There is one tiny restroom for patrons. After I placed my order of bubble gum flavor I immediate need to utlize their facilities, the staff put my paid ice cream in the freezer until I was ready to consume thus it was did not melt. Wow, now that is service!
The decor is set to an old fashion ice cream parlor of black and white tiles and round built-in stools. There is free water to clean one's palate when it comes to tasting different flavors. Free sampling is also available.
The man behind the counter grinned as I walked in, anticipating my cold confectionery craving. He already had a hobbit spoon in his hand, looking down at the array of choices beneath him as if he himself were ready to sample one or two or five. Maybe he already had throughout the day, but needed an excuse to sample more? One for the customer, one for himself, and so on and so forth? {This is what I would do if I worked here.}
There were few recognizable flavors, and they all sounded appealing, so he went to work scooping sample after sample for me. I must have tried half a dozen flavors* before settling on coconut fudge. No toppings, no syrups or sauces. Just pure, unadulterated nut-based ice cream. It was delicious.
* Do you remember as a little kid those little tubes of plasticky goo that came with a teeny stick that you blew into delicate balloons? The rum raisin that I sampled tastes like the smell of those balloons. Unreal.
Minor update 10/4/09: The lemon meringue flavor is also delicious!
Super super cute shop! It was very crowded but the line went quickly.
Super nice people working there-
I had the chocolate and cake batter soft serve twist. It was seriously better than real ice cream. The only problem is that I am allergic to cashews and had a bit of a reaction to the chocolate, which is nut based. Completely my fault- I knew it was nut based but I didn't ask what kind. Next time I'll just avoid the nut-based flavors, which they note in plain sight on the menu.
Amazing what you can do without using dairy. They have soy-based, nut-based, and coconut milk-based ice creams that taste just like the real thing (and certainly no healthier)! Unfortunately, my psychosomatic lactose intolerence also seems triggered by fake cream, so I still leave feeling a tad queezy.
That didn't stop me from coming back a second or a third time.
Lula's has an energized staff ready to explain the details of ice cream making. They understand that it really is necessary to try each of the offered daily flavors in order to make an informed decision (yes, it is. At least sample one each of the different bases), and they are happy to oblidge.
If you too suffer from fake lactose intolerance, go for the nut-based; it seems the least 'creamy'.
Went in with somewhat low expectations, but Lula's was a pleasant surprise. I thought that being dairy-free, the ice cream would lack flavor or creaminess, but the opposite was true.
Tasted:
The Toffee Crunch: terrifically crunchy, but a tad too sweet for my liking.
Banana Cream Pie: Not a fan. The flavor was intense, but strangely un-banana-like. Tasted more like dates than bananas.
Cake batter: Gritty texture, but super tasty. The flavor isn't overpowering like some of the others here. Best to pair it with something else subtle, NOT the chocolate like I did. Chocolate was delicious, but overwhelmed the cake batter.
Four stars for fantastic service, cutey/quirky decor, unique flavors, and excellent soft-serve cake batter ice cream.
utterly ridiculous ice cream! i frequently visit NY, n whenever i'm in town, no matter the season or the temp, i have to go to lulu's. the fact that it's vegan came as a surprise to me, though it ultimately didn't matter to me one way or the other. if all vegan food was like this, i'd have no problem going vegan...
Great creamy taste ice cream but it is gluten free!!!! Wow I was so in love with it. The only thing is it is a little pricey... I feel like i am dropping big bucks for the organic and gluten free fad... LOL
this place is great!!! i love nut-based ice cream and usually get my fix from pure food and wine or quintessence - but the variety (and price!) at those 2 spots just doesn't compare to this awesome cute adorable ice cream parlor fit for the raw/vegan palate!!
They have soft serve options and then the hard ice creams. I got 1 scoop of chocolate and 1 scoop of mint chip. The mint chip had a really strong mint flavor, not artificial like usual mint ice cream - this one I could tell was made with real mint.
The ice cream here is made from cashew milk (they also have a few soy options) - which makes it sooo creamy and decadent, but still healthy unlike dairy options!
For 2 scoops of ice cream - I spent 3.75 - which really isn't bad since that's about how much it costs for a small tasti-di-lite (which is total artificial flavor - ugh) - plus ice cream at pure food and wine or quintessence ends up being 10 dollars for a serving which is crazy!
anyways - delish - and very cute place - with old school ice cream parlor charm. We ate our ice cream at the shop - it started to get really packed around 10ish which was fun and the music is cute/old school stuff.
bring anyone here - vegan or not - its a great spot - and i need to go back to try their brownie sundaes!!!
