A nice local pizza shop with character. You go here for local history and a nice meal.

Suggestion: The slice and a salad for lunch.

Remember: Cash only.

I was impressed by the mound of cheese on my salad. I was also impressed at how quickly they seated us (a relatively large group). That's about where the buck stops, unfortunately.

The server was rude and slow, the pizza wasn't anything special, and they charged me two dollars to take out cash to pay for the meal. I didn't have a good time here and I don't plan to go back.

I've eaten at Luigi's twice.  I had the ravioli the first time and they were just OK.  Had the pizza (no toppings) the second time and it was very tasty.  I prefer new york style and expected more of an "old world" style pizza, but this was almost a pan pizza.  That said, it was very good.  I also loved the atmosphere.  Nothing fancy, but a very nostalgic decor with tons of old pictures of (mostly long dead) celebs.  As far as the service, I was not treated poorly at all, they are simply running their butts off as the place is apparently always packed.  There must be a reason.

I always have to go to Luigi's when I am in Akron (even thought my Dad and Sister-in-Law really hate it). I think it is cause the pizza is usually pretty darned good. Perhaps it is just comfort food, and the familiar taste is what I crave. Every once in awhile the pizza is undercooked and soggy, though.

My Dad noted recently that after decades of not quite being able to put his finger on why he hates it here, his problem with Luigi's is that they do the very minimum necessary to get you some food and get paid. The waitresses are aloof and dismissive; they will bring you napkins, silverware and water IF you ask. They will be perfectly friendly about it, but not any more than is necessary. In their defense, once you get a beverage, they do keep the refills coming.

This really is a love it or hate it place. I'll surely return, cause the pizza calls to me like an old-timey middle American mid-century pizza joint siren that is becoming hard to find these days. It is worth the risk that I'll regret it every 6th time when the food and the atmosphere fall particularly flat.

Worth noting, they do not take credit cards, and that is not obvious till you are ready to pay. But they are really very affordable, so much so that this should not present a problem.

Mmmmmm....every time anyone SAYS Luigi's I start drooling.  This is literally the best pizza anywhere.  This is the best place to go between bars.

I'm craving the baked ravioli as I type. This place is an Akron institution - and that's a good thing! Every time I come "home" from the DC area I make an effort to get to Luigi's for a meal - either after drinking with friends at 2am or with my parents at a more "respectable" hour. I really love everything about this place - from the weird "band" above the door to the classic booths. The pizza is wonderful, but I love the pasta. Oh, and the salad - it's really just cheese with some lettuce. The bread too, it's so good.  Bring your cash - they don't accept credit cards (probably never will). They have an ATM machine just in case.

Tis truly a travesty that I haven't written this place up a long time ago.  I used to work in Akron and this place provided plenty of lunchtime "meetings".  Long lunch was the way to go.  But I digress.

Instead of repeating what everyone else has said before me, I'll just add that the Pizza D'lite is a simple gem.  The baked pasta (you pick) is also very good.

I return to Luigi's every December for a Christmas lunch with my old pals from those earlier days.

As for being the best pizza in Akron, no arguments.  As for the best Italian restaurant in Akron, I think Dontino's has a shot at that, and don't even get me started on the Italian food served on Thursday night's fund raiser at the Italian Center in the Falls.  See my review.

Yet another Akron Landmark that really hasnt changed in years and that's a good thing!

It is THE place to go for Italian in the area and the only reason it doesnt get 5 stars is the ridiculous policy of no credit cards.  To make matters worse, they'll direct you to an "ATM Machine" in the back of the joint but it really isnt an ATM at all.  It's a machine where you slide your debit card, it charges you a $2 fee and then prints a slip of paper with the amount you want to PAY the restaurant.  You then take that slip to the register.  So not only is Luigi's not going to pay the much smaller fee to the CC company for using a credit card but theyre actually going to make you pay Luigi's to use their little money machine.  I say just offer the convenience that every other business offers its customers and adjust your food prices accordingly - the current approach is just plain stupid and a nuisance.

If you can get over the silly payment garbage, enjoy yourself and come away with a ridiculously full stomach.

This place does not even deserve 2 star but how low I can go!

I went there for lunch one day.    This place was dark as if it has been closed for a while.   I was seated promptly.   I ordered lunch pizza which was for 4.99.    Now I was may be expecting too much but all I got was a store bought pizza crust, lathered with some frozen pizza sauce and some thing which is like cheese.   It came boiling hot so I knew they baked it up on pretty high temp for getting frozen crust and frozen sauce to life..

I could not believe this since it's a pizza place.   Aren't they making real pizzas anymore?

Luigi's serves up some excellent pizza which is undeniably some of the better pie in any-town, usa. Its that local place that people remember and crave and gather with old friends and family. However, I only give it 3 stars though the pizza is excellent, since the quality of the other items do not follow the leader. In addition, the selection (both pizza and others) are very limited. The wine and beer selection is also very thin, with inexpensive bottles and the regular domestics (only in bottles).

The ambiance is a memorabilia feel with simple tables and chairs. The 2 dining rooms are sparse besides pictures on the wall. You do not come here for the ambiance. On weekends, the place can get really busy with waits of 30-40 minutes not uncommon. The happy clientele don't mind the wait since the staff are friendly and quick and you usually have a party you wait and catch-up with.

If its good old fashioned no-frills pizza you crave, this is the place. But if its a quiet dinner with a good selection of food and drinks you are looking for,  then you might want to go elsewhere. Also, the venue does not feel 'local' anymore due to recent developments that has a fancy condo and some new restaurants in the neighborhood. Remember - No Credit Cards!

A landmark in Akron. Luigi's really doesn't live up to the hype the pizza is ok (I prefer the white pizza) and the service and ambiance are pretty bad. On top of the no credit cards means that we probably will never go out of our way to go here. But the salads are a thing of wonderment...the largest mound of cheese you have ever seen on a small bowl of lettuce.

Luigi's! One of the few Akron landmarks that have really withstood the test of time and economic slump. I've never been when I hadn't stood in line for a little while, but even in the biting cold and wind, it's absolutely worth it. The atmosphere is perfect--it's always packed and loud and makes me feel like I'm in a much bigger, glittering, bustling city.

Luigi's is particularly known for its pizza, which lives up to and exceeds any expectation. To some, their crust may seem "doughy" or their sauce too sweet, but if you can forgive New York its too-crispy crust and Chicago its almost overhwhelming bulk, then you'll be able to embrace Akron's own particular brand of brilliance.

In addition, their pastas are outstanding and their bread is the freshest in town. Their salads, while simple iceberg and tomato, are delightfully crispy and quenching, even if I am the type to always, always forego iceberg in favor of something with a little more nutritional value and excitement.

Their staff is as much of an institution as the restaurant and every server I've had has been incredibly intuitive, which is a quality not often seen in these parts. It's rare that I need to ask for anything, as a server is already passing by my table with whatever I'd think to ask for.

Essentially, the highest praise I can give is that when I'm at Luigi's, I feel like I'm at home. The little storefront entrance is soothing and the history of the place spans back to the days when my Dad was in college and would spend late nights there with his friends and every time we go there as a family, I feel nostalgic for those memories I didn't have until 20 years later.

Luigi could be my second home.  If they let me sleep on the floor.

Their sauce is spectacular, their service is good, their crust is nice, and their cheese is generous (if you eat it).  Their salad dressing is great, too (and if you get cheese... prepare to dig your way to the lettuce!

But, I recently discovered that you can order garlic and olive oil.
Fresh.garlic cooked in olive.oil.
AWESOMEness in liquid form.
this is great to dip your bread it.  Granted, you'll smell when you leave, but if you convince everyone with you to eat it, noone will notice.  And you will be SO healthy!

It really is good.  Promise.

I'm not sure of the goofy murals... but I don't like murals as it is, so I guess you can't judge by that.

They also have cool mechanical do dads all over the place.

But go for the pizza.
And the garlic and olive oil.

I'm a Philly girl who spent two years living in Akron, OH and Luigi's was what saved me. Their pizza is delicious, the dough is chewy and although it is not typically the type of pizza I like, Luigi's does it well. Their salad with cheese should be called the cheese salad with some lettuce down there somewhere...but that's the best part. I love cheese so this salad made me happy. I say it is the best pizza in the greater Akron area. The only reason I gave it four stars was because it is cash only. Come one, you are a sit down restaurant with a bar- you need to take credit cards.

A family owned Italian restaurant which is highly overrated. They do not have many classic Italian dishes (Chicken Parmiagiana anyone?) and their is nothing worth remembering about any of their other dishes. The only saving grace is the friendly and fun ambiance there, but that's not enough to make me want to go back.

This place has pretty darn good pizza.  They are however pretty pricey.  A small pizza is like 4 tiny triangles.  I suggest getting their pizza by slice for lunch.  The lasanga was pretty good.  I thought the service was pretty good, nice friendly people.

Luigi's is an Akron icon.  I love sole proprietor restaurants, they are more...human.  Many people love the pizza; but my fav is the meat balls.  Yes, there is a borderline-ridiculously generous amount of cheeze on the salad.  Pricing is modest.  The atmosphere is quirky, mostly because I remember staring around that place when I was little.  Only not great things...1. the wait staff seems miserable, 2. no credit cards.

Luigi's has the best pizza in Summit County. The pizza here is phenomenal.  The restaurant, located just outside of downtown off of MLK Blvd (there are signs, that's how much of a landmark it is), has been around since the late '40's and is very traditional. Many of the waitresses are older and credit cards are still not accepted (Take Note: There is an ATM in the back but it's a pain to use, so make sure you have enough cash with you). There are no reservations accepted and because of that, and the size of the restaurant, there are lines almost every night coming out of the restaurant. There are three small dining rooms plus a bar. The food is outstanding. The pizza is the main staple here. I've had it many times and love it. The selection of pizza isn't huge, but what it lacks in available toppings it makes up for in flavor. The sauce is the best part. There are other options aside from pizza though. They have a variety of pastas, as well as a few italian specialties and sandwiches. The last time I ate here was during lunch and I had a gyro with french fries. The gyro was great; I thoroughly enjoyed it. There is a good serving of meat in it and the dough was the best part. The fries were surprisingly good, considering this is a traditional Italian restaurant. Overall, if you are looking for great pizza and you are in NE Ohio, head over to Akron and try Luigi's. It's worth the drive, no matter where you are.
