5 reviews for Lucy's Coffee & Tea
Lucy is legendary around UAB's medical center. It's always a safe bet that you'll find doctors and students studying and talking, relaxing and enjoying themselves from opening to closing, which unfortunately is far too narrow a time frame. Really, my only complaint is that when I want coffee late at night or on the weekend when I'm in lab I have to go to Starbucks because Lucy's is closed.
I tend to stick to the veggie panini, but I've been convinced to try the goat cheese and moz/tomato/basil ones as well and they stack up well. Same with the baked goods. Haven't tried any of the espresso or non-coffee drinks, but the dark roast and irish creme are delightful.
Make sure to take a look at the art on the wall from the Naked Art Gallery, some of it's great and rotates in and out.

Everything you would want from a locally run and owned coffee shop. Great pastries, good food, fantastic coffee, wi-fi, and a comfortable environment. I completely agree with other reviews in that my only complaint is that they aren't open on the weekends. There really isn't a decent substitute for Lucy's around town for your weekend study spot.

Legendary. Yummy. Thank goodness the starbucks next door has shut down.
Ah, Lucy's.
Ah, Lucy.
Any coffee shop that can share a wall with the Starbucks evil empire and survive is obviously doing more than one thing right. Good coffee, excellent food, many happy campers enjoying the place. Soups fresh daily, also the cookies and that sort of munchies are baked in the morning before the opening. Many choices of sandwiches, possibly made up on the spot if you push it a little. And regarding that Starbuck's, it's on the to-be closed list. So late night coffee drinkers will have to go elsewhere, sorry. At least one of the Medical schools (Dental I believe) has a slide of Lucy's as the last of the orientation presentation.

I have nothing but the best memories from this place. I knew Lucy when she was working her coffee cart across the street from the UAB School of Public Health. In 1995 she leased this space after the Persian restaurant that was there went out of business. She has slowly built a legendary little cafe. This place is beautifully decorated, cozy, staffed with super friendly employees, and serves superb drinks. They have everything from traditional fair-trade coffee to lattes, to herbal teas, to my favorite Vietnamese coffee... it's all very well done and served with a smile. Sit down and stay a while, play some chess or some dominoes. Lucy will be glad you came by!
