I don't get this place. Since it has the word "authentic" in the title, plus has actual Mexican people preparing the food, I thought it was going to be amazing. Instead, I had a bag of frozen mixed vegetables (lima beans, green beans, carrots, and corn) in my burrito - mixed in with some weird kind of sauce. I'm all for incorporating different items into plain old boring food (like burritos) but come on. It was a freaking defrosted bag of vegetables, not grilled fresh veggies or anything. I can't complain about the decor, I like kitchsy things. I really liked that there's a counter to sit at so you can people watch on South Street. Basically, I wouldn't come back here unless they did a complete overhaul of the menu.

I really WANT to like Lucky's, but unfortunately the one time I've eaten there was a let down. I think it may have boiled down to menu choice on my part, but then if one item is prepared poorly it doesn't speak highly of the entire menu at large. I went on a Wednesday afternoon with my husband and a friend. As I'm trying to keep my calories down I ordered the chicken taco salad, which looked like a healthy option.

Unfortunately it was both healthy and flavorless and seemed to be about 80% shredded lettuce. The chicken was just fine taste-wise but there was very little of it, and the only other ingredients are a tomato/onion mixture and some sour cream. (I asked to hold the guacamole.) I specifically asked for extra tomato and onion and if that was "extra" that I got then I can only deduce the regular portion is one tiny piece of each.

The decor and service are really great here and I was expecting to be put off because I don't really like these sort of rickety-chair order-at-the-bar places, but had the food been good, I would have really enjoyed myself. I'm going to give it another try because my dining partners seemed to really enjoy their food, but for the time being I would say that my experience at Lucky's was rather UN-lucky.

I remember being one of the first customers at Lucky's a few years back. There was only bare sheetrock on the walls, a few dangling lights, and a counter with a blender and small griddle behind it. On that day I ordered a platter for $7 and got enough food to feed a family for days.

Seven dollars can still get you a lot at Lucky's, although the environment has changed drastically. In the past few years they have upgraded a few times to compete with the changing style of South Street and have been able to fight off litigation with representatives from the market next door.

The place is now sponsored by Coca Cola, which, in my opinion is just plain tacky, but they offer glass bottle of Coke that actually DON'T have high fructose corn syrup in them. Amazing! The food has remained pretty consistent in terms of portions and taste since their opening and many of the employees have also stayed on since then as well.

My favorite Lucky's meal so far has been the shrimp burrito with a side of chips and salsa and a real cane sugar coke. It will cost about $10.00, but compared to a lot of the other Mexican fares I have sampled in the neighborhood it is divine.

This place is pretty damn good, especially the burritos and taquitos. Generally really fast delivery/takeout.

I love me some Mexican and was not near La Lupe one day at lunch time. Lucky's on South Street had sombreros on the wall and said they sold tacos. So I gave it a try.

This place definitely needs some interior decorating help, but it's good if you are planning on taking it to go. THe burritos and tacos are okay. They aren't really authentic and nothing to go crazy over, but if you need a non-sandwich lunch, it's a great option.
