9 reviews for Lucky's Chinese Take Out
I'm pretty sure that my friends and I kept Lucky's in business this weekend. After a long Halloween weekend full of dancing, drinking, and who knows what else, we certainly worked up late-night appetites. Thank goodness Lucky's is just around the corner from my friend's apartment and she has the number on speed dial.
Thinking about those steamed dumplings I devoured while watching The Shining might give me a stomache now, but they were just the thing I needed. Opening up the fridge and seeing a half-eaten cheeseburger someone ordered could have given me an upchuck reflex at the time but i remember how clutch that food was at 3am.
Yes that's right, Lucky's was still open. All we needed was someone to collect the left over drinking/cab money we all had (or didn't) and walk over to pick it up.
Thank you Lucky's for being a crucial part in our sobering-up process.
P.S. I've had this food sober and for being a bulletproof window late night Chinese food store, it's actually pretty tasty.
Lucky's always manages to have me walking the tight rope between 2 and 3 stars. So since I covered the the three star rating the last time I may as well cover some of worst, while covering just a little bit of the good.
Lucky's is so not a place that you want to experiment in! As I've covered before it's so damn cheap that you generally have an idea what your getting yourself into. But if you take it too far you might just find General Tso thrusting his wrathful bayonet through your sternum. and personally I'll admit that I've found myself clutching the porcelain throne and gazing upon the cloudy waters of my devastation more times than I'd like to admit because of here.
BUT if you keep it simple within moderation, than Lucky's can be pure bliss, albeit still on a devastating level since it's also still open well within the drinking hours (I've lost track of how many cheesesteak egg rolls I've ordered past midnight. Is that Bad? Yeah maybe it is - http://www.youtube.com...). Their small fries which go beyond the super sized are only $1, thus adding up to the best $1 ever spent! And hell, I already covered cheesesteak egg rolls and the fact that it's open past midnight. So if you use Lucky's sparingly it can be wonderful. But otherwise it could get ugly - http://www.youtube.com...

GOOD:
The sesame tofu is like crack (request it extra spicy) - great for vegans and vegetarians
Cheap, cheap, cheap ($4 for a good size portion)
Open very late
Friendly and very fast service
BAD:
Panhandlers approach you while you wait inside the take-out place
You think the tofu actually has crack in it? Hmm.
This is the most disgusting place to eat in all of Philadelphia. It is the worst. Ever.
Nothing here taste like Chinese Food. Especially the General Tso's tofu. It taste like gum balls in syrup. BLAGH!!!
I know I am committing West Philadelphia blasphemy here but fuck it. I am not drinking the Lucky's Kool-Aid.
Dear Lucky's,
What the ef do you put in your sesame tofu to make it so I can no longer enjoy any other sesame tofu in the world without longing for your sauce? No, don't tell me. I don't even care.
I think you should know you are the #1 reason I am sad to no longer be sleeping with the person in West Philly that I was calling on last year. It was always you, Lucky's. It always will be.
Four stars for the unmatched delicious yum that ensues when you eat their sesame tofu. I don't know if any of their other food is good.
Wow, I can't believe there are no 5 star lucky's reviews...so here goes. Lucky's General Tso's tofu is delicious, and currently $3.65 for a portion that feeds 2 people. You just can't beat that. You can find enough spare change in your house to get a meal there, and they're open till 2am on weeknights, 3am on Fri and Sat. Seriously. If you want gourmet food, go to Whole Foods in South Philly and you'll quit whining and get the same amount of their take-away for $25. What Lucky's lacks in ambiance it makes up in special sauce.
A typical late night hanging out with my friends usually ends up like this;
"I'm hungry," I will say, after finishing off a 40 (usually of Miller High Life, cause I roll classy with the champagne of beers.)
"It's too late to get pizza." It doesn't matter who says this. Someone ALWAYS says this.
"But we can get pizza ROLLS from Lucky's!"
"I'd rather have a cheesesteak roll." Again. Someone ALWAYS says this.
So to Lucky's we will trek, usually passing the back deck of Dalek on the way. Evil, evil malcontents will beckon us to join them and partake in drink, but no, we are on a mission for food. Our stomachs growl louder than their invitations. ONWARD!
To the neon yellow lights and the women in too tight tube tops spilling over the counter as they yell at the equally sassy cashier behind the bulletproof glass. I've said on many occasion that the glass is there for the customer and not the establishment. Some of the sights I've seen in Lucky's have inhabited my usual bag of stories. They always end with the cashier yelling at someone. But she always smiles at me, but that's cause I am nice.
And nicely, I will ask for my order (usually a small chicken and brocolli AND a pizza roll) and nicely I will receive it. My friends and I will skip home with our assorted rolls and whatnot. We will devour our food quickly.
And eventually someone will say, because someone ALWAYS says it.
"Why did we do that? I feel awful!"
And awful we will feel, because the food isn't great. It isn't horrible. It's your standard late-night, nothing else is open- type of joint. It is a place of late-night cravings and beer induced desperation. And we keep going back, because it beckons us like an evil beacon. And how I love that it's there, even if I hate myself after it's all said (gobbled) and done.
I am writing this review to balance the 1 star review that Erin G. just left. It is clear that that 1 star was intended to be a review of her level of self control and not the delicious cheese wantons and pizza/cheesesteak rolls they offer up during the post-drinking hours. Lucky's is delicious (albeit extremely unhealthy) and perfect for that late night snack after some time at the bar.
Oh god. If only they would close earlier. Its so hard to ban yourself from post-drink Chinese binging when Lucky's is RIGHT THERE!
