The 'Bone' is a fixture in Anchorage. Known for their pan fried chicken (which is excellent) they also make some very yummy burgers (try their Jumbo Swiss Bacon). Although the Bone is on the expensive side the food usually always makes up for the ~$12 - $17 individual bill. The only sub-par item IMO are the fries. They are shoe-string fries much like McD's but greasier. Some people love them, while others don't.
Recommendations:
Onion Rings
Milk Shakes (strawberry - best in town - much better than City Diner's $6 shake)

Jumbo Swiss Bacon Burger
Hot Fudge Sundae
What's the big deal...? I got a pan fried chicken combo, which includes fries and a small roll. The fries were bland and too soft, and the roll was mediocre, almost like from a grade school cafeteria. The chicken was ok, too many bones and not enough meat. And their tuna sandwich is absolutely horrible and definitely not restaurant quality!
This was one of the few places open in Anchorage late at night, so thanks to Lucky Wishbone we didn't go to sleep hungry.
My mom is a huge fan of fried chicken, so we got an 8 piece when they were in town. I thought the price wasn't bad until I got home and saw how tiny the pieces were. Yikes. That's easily the smallest chicken breast I've ever seen. I thought it was a thigh until I saw how tiny those were. Three of us who usually only eat one piece each finished off all eight pieces and were still hungry.
The chicken itself was good, but not very moist. Definitely not worth the price. If I go back, I'll try something new and get one of the Oreo shakes that my friend raves about from there.
I vacillate between 4 or 5 stars when thinking of Lucky Wishbone, but I'm going to give it a 5.
First off, the fried chicken here is excellent- possibly the best in the world. It's not good for a small town or good for "Anchorage standards," it's just damn good. I'm sure there are places in the south that can give it a run for its money, but Lucky Wishbone is certainly unique and excellent.
According to my bf's family (they're from Anchorage), the chicken is flown in to Lucky Wishbone everyday and is never frozen. Members of my boyfriend's extended family worked here when they were younger (including his aunt, I think), which should give you an idea of how long Lucky Wishbone has been around, and how much the locals love this place.
I've never had a burger, but hear they are killer. The chicken is too good to pass up. I'd also recommend a hot fudge shake or malt (my favorite!). Nothing compliments fried chicken like ice cream.
The best thing I can say about Lucky Wishbone's chicken is that it doesn't make you feel bad eating it. It's not heavy, greasy, or a gut-buster. You can almost pretend it's healthy.... almost....
WOW... what can I say about the chicken?? It was AWESOME! Very, very flavorful and not greasy tasting at all. I ordered the Mom's meal which came with a cornbread muffin and fries. The muffin was good (not a huge cornbread fan) and the fries, for the most part, were pretty good (a few soggy ones in the basket). My only one complaint, and the reason I didnt give it 5 stars is that one of the three pieces of chicken was a back. That is a rip off if I ever found one!
It was really nice hitting this "diner" with its home food and pictures of Anchorage back in the day. Ill be heading back in a few months hopefully and hope to try out the milk shakes.
I ate here a few years ago because all of the drunk Anchorage locals told me that it was a good place.
I should have known better than to listen to the drunks, abusers, users, dealers, and losers in Anchorage.
I ordered the chicken I believe it was the 5 piece meal.
Well, guess what grandma?
They served me 2 backs!!!!
That's right backs!!
What restaurant in America serves backs in a fried chicken joint as a piece of chicken?
OK, at home maybe with grandma cooking them it is ok BUT COME ON NOT TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
THAT IS A TOTAL JOKE!
Use those backs and make stock or chicken soup!!!
That along with the expensive anchorage ripoff prices and I was not happy at all!!
I heard that they do make good shakes though but never tried them or the burgers.
If you order chicken and they give you a back as one of the pieces please tell them to go F*ck themselves please!!!!!!!!!!
This place was not good. Do not be fooled. My brother and I ate two incredibly unhealthy meals that did not taste good. What is the appeal?
Great chicken! I pretty much always get Mom's meal. Chicken piece sizes are kinda hit or miss. Sometimes they're tiny, sometimes they're pretty large. But always the best fried chicken in Anchorage.
Milkshakes and Malts are excellent, sometimes go there just for the shakes.
Not the cheapest place, but try it at least once. I'll see you there.
I enjoyed my lunch here. I don't eat fried chicken, but it smelled lovely. I had a jumbo burger, which didn't look all that jumbo to me, but tasted wonderful. The fries are a separate order, but the half order was plenty for me. I didn't finish it.
They didn't mind mixing flavors for me when it came time to order my malt, and the service was very, very good. My only complaint is that they don't seat incomplete parties. There were more than half the booths empty when I arrived, and I'm pretty doggoned pregnant. I had to stand there for ten minutes while my friend who was meeting me arrived and parked her car. They could've made a tiny exception. I mean, the place didn't even fill up til we were ordering dessert.
Anyhoo, decent place, a tad bit overpriced, and great service.
I've just been the one time, but this place is pretty neat, a run down diner for an atmosphere, super friendly waitresses...she screwed up my order, normally I'd whine about it and get it fixed, but she was nice, I was rushed and it really didn't bother me at all.
I haven't had chicken which I know is the main reason to go, so maybe I'll go back when I'm in a fried chicken kind of mood, I wanted chicken strips, but all I saw was actual pieces of chicken? I hope they have chicken tenders of some sort otherwise I likely won't go often.
I do, however, want to go back and get a t-shirt hah
We went to the Lucky Wishbone to check out the history, and to take Yelp pictures for the review. We weren't even hungry, I believe we just ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and a soup to share. The food was food, grilled cheese & chicken noodle soup. Nothing more, nothing less.
I believe the other reviewers when they speak of the fried chicken, but the trip to Anchorage had already been so filled with eating, I just couldn't bear dipping into the Lucky Wishbone in that way.
I did like the homestyle ambiance, and warm greetings from the wait staff. It was surely filled with regulars - you know, Anchorage locals. I'm sure we were the only tourists in there.
The Lucky Wishbone does diner food like some of the best, exceeding the expectations. The portions are large and the price is reasonable. I have only had lunch there and is always very good.
I'm no longer a meat eater but I consumed many, many pieces of fried chicken here as a child. I love the old school diner atmosphere, complete with lots of families and cops, and all the vintage photos. The thing that keeps me coming back anytime I'm in Anchorage is the milkshakes! They make a strawberry shake with actual frozen strawberries in it - still the best shake anywhere I've ever eaten. I'm a bit of a milkshake connoisseur, I don't mind telling you, and this one's a winner.
Great "diner food" and a piece of nostalgia. Built in the 1950's and perhaps best known for its fried chicken, which is freshly brought in each day (by way of the Cook Inlet?) and pan fried intead of deep fat fried. I had the pastrami sandwich, which was very good and the onion rings were outstanding, a sweet, melt in your mouth flavor. Many of the restaurant regulars are probably those who've been coming for 20-30 years or more. Unlike most of today's restaurants, they stick to the old fashioned ways, meaning they give you glasses of water when you're seated, portion sizes are sensible, and you pay at the register
Hands down the most delicious chicken of all the Northern Hemisphere, maybe the world! A local favorite, this diner retains its charm with aviation memorbilia and original architecture circa 1960. It's everyone's lunch destination from the city official to the Air Force guy stationed nearby.
I hear the burgers are good too but I'll never know.
Yummmm...burgers are great !!! Nuff said.
best burger joint in america, hands down!
Overpriced, mediocre food. Sadly, Anchorage has little competition of quality diners and restaurants other than fast food. I go to the Bone a couple times a year for a fix of a decent malt (a large is about $4.50 and it's not very large) and greasy chicken that is pan fried. For Anchorage, this is good diner food. For the rest of civilized America, it's sad.
