The owner of this place is amazing and knowledgeable about everything aquarium related. He's super friendly and works with you to get the best home for your fish set up..
He never tries to add on things you don't need. He simply suggests things that might make your tank better or cleaner and lets you decide if you want them. He's honest and to the point which makes me keep coming back to him.
He also will exchange out fish for a discount on new fish in case you get bored, like the Convict Ciclids we had. :) -

LOA is my favorite aquarium shop.
In the SF market where stores have come & gone over the last decade, Lucky Ocean remains the best option for locals. Steve and his team are ethical with livestock, fair with prices & respected by folks in the know. Steve's store is not fancy per se. But in many ways it is above glamour. My experience is that they like what they do, do it well & basically just want folks to have a good experience.
Thank you, Doug -

The two starfish i purchased are great and doing well. However, it was not a good move on my part to have them in a small tank (20 gal) If you plan to have more life in your aquarium like i do, don't bring a starfish to a tank. They are not compatible with most sea creatures (specially coral) and i suggest doing some research before hand.

It's always refreshing to see family owned businesses not immersed in getting product out asap. Steve does a great job here. Hit or miss on fish health. New fish shipments are marked so they can get a good rest till they see a new home. Tanks are big enough and not overcrowded.
Very practical for newcomers or current aquarium owners starting a big project. He helped me find the supplies I needed at a good price. -

This place is great. Before going to Lucky Ocean, I went to 6th Avenue Aquarium. The people there didn't care to help you. They have a poor attitude, and they were just looking to sell you whatever they could.
Since I had such a bad experience at 6th Avenue, I decided to look for another place to go to buy a new fish tank. I decided to go to Lucky Ocean based off the Yelp reviews. I had an excellent experience here. They have GREAT customer service. They were informative, helpful, and friendly. They even said I could bring a water sample by to check and make sure it's a good environment for the fish. -

This place is great. It's not the biggest fish store - or the most well known in the city - but the workers here are top notch. I was rounding out my tour of tropical fish stores in SF and stopped by here last. I read on yelp that they sell T5 lighting at great prices and was saving my pennies to spend here on an upgrade. They had the EXACT fixture I was looking at online that was cheaper without shipping. Of course I bought it. The man working there also knew I would need to swap out a bulb to be better for my freshwater plants and found the bulb and gave me a great discount on it.
We were asked if there were any questions as we were leaving and I asked him to explain to my father about DIY CO2 using yeast. My father was so skeptical I needed him to hear from someone else. He was not pushy at all about selling expensive kits, but simply told us that yeast works. We do not need to buy the kits with the premade mixtures of yeast, but do it ourselves. Dad is sold. Thank you Lucky Ocean! -

Awesome store, with a wide variety of aquarium supplies, and livestock for any enthusiast!
I'd highly recommend swinging by here -whether you are a seasoned freshwater or marine/reef aquarist, or just someone looking to get their hands wet for the first time, I'm positive there will be something here to tickle your fancy.
It can be a little busy at times, but hang in there -the wait is well worth it. Steve is extremely knowledgable when it comes to the know-how and everything aquarium. Steve will take care of you, without a doubt.
I've read some reviews below about the "poor parking" situation. It really isn't that bad -there is 2-hour parking just right around the corner, and meters one block over ... Almost never more than a 2-3 minute walk to the store ... those people complaining about parking need to stop being so lazy. Yeah, I said it. Lazy. It really ain't that bad at all.
Prices on both livestock and dry merchandise are very fair, all things considered.
Support your local fish stores.
Rock on Lucky O. -

Fish store is not that big. You see stuff everywhere either stacked on the floor or stacked on the top shelves. They have a decent collection of fish.
Steve definitely has great knowledge about fishes and aquariums in general. He will give his honest opinion about his products and offer cheaper alternatives if available. His prices I believe are priced pretty competitively (at least for the equipment). First time customer there and got lots of discounts (10%, 15% & 20% off on various equipment)! -

i love this place! Steve, the owner, is so incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Every time I buy fish from him, he makes recommendations and advises me what type of fish I should buy based on the size of my tank, other fish, etc. He also always picks out the healthiest, most perfect-looking fish he can give me, just so my fish tank looks as pretty as possible :) He is more than happy to help, and is extremely knowledgeable about all things related to fish. You can tell he genuinely cares about his customers' satisfaction, and is not just obsessed with making money. So if you're a fish noob like me, you should definitely come here and chat with Steve.

I had a serious five star experience here, and it was all because of Steve. He's very knowledgeable, extra helpful, and super friendly. I was in the midst of doing a tank upgrade for my sweetheart, Stella, and I was nearly doubling the volume of the tank. I needed a new filter and a new water heater, and I was ready to spend all kinds of money to make sure I got precisely the brand that I wanted.
I called around to various shops for a Fluval 4. I was hoping to find one that was comparable to what it was going for on Amazon. Every other aquarium shop in the city either didn't have it, or was selling it for an extraordinary amount ($30+ more than it went for Amazon). I called Steve, and his price was very reasonable. We ventured to the Richmond, and when I finally talked to Steve, he sold me the filter, a much cheaper version of carbon pads to use with the filter (instead of the Fluval brand ones which cost a lot more), and answered all my questions about how to get rid of hard water stains, what to do with Stella's basking area, etc.
On top of that, I was looking for a specific water heater (a Rena heater) that no one else had (I confirmed this by heading back to the car and calling all of the aquarium shops again to see if they had it). I talked to Steve, and he special ordered it for me and promised me a price competitive to Amazon's. When it finally came it, I paid the Amazon price despite the list price being much higher.
Steve is awesome. I will not hesitate to come here again. -

One of the few non-bar places I've been to where the regulars just stop in to say hi, or see what's new. Several times I've been there I've seen that happen. People wander in to look at the fish and chat with the owner. Do they need anything new? Nope. They just love it here.
While not as big as some other stores, everything they do have is VERY well kept. I was in the market for some Oto cats. They wouldn't sell them to me until they had been through the proper quarantine period (to ensure I didn't get a diseased or weakened fish). They were extremely helpful when setting up my new tank, and I've gone back several times for design discussions.
One of my two favorite fish stores in the city. -

Went here for my plant tank to get a light fixture. I needed a high output 3' 6700 fixture with two bulbs. Aqua forest tried to sell me one at $179.99 while here at lucky ocean, they hooked me up for $72.25. We mentioned yelp, and even though it was a sale item he calculated the discount off the original price to be lower than sale price and gave us that price! Originally: $85 sale: $75 now: $72.25
In addition, the man working there was knowledgable and could tell me what I was doing wrong from my descriptions. Thanks! -

This place is probably the last authentic old school aquarium in the city. Steve, the owner, is super knowledgeable, helpful, patient, flexible, and friendly. I recently acquired two goldfish and didn't know anything about fish. He helped me get setup and even answered questions over the phone when one of the goldfish started floating sideways. Having Steve is like having your own fish whisperer. And, if there's anything you need that he doesn't stock in the store, he'll happily order it for you. I don't live anywhere near the store but I happily trek all the way across town to Lucky Ocean. This is the kind of service those big box stores will never be able to provide. If we want stores like this to stick around, we need to do our part to make sure they do.

Came here today to pick up an aquarium set for starters. Good experience. I'd recommend this place for:
1. Price
2. Customer Service
3. Neighborhood Store
4. Expertise
Price
- I shopped around and the prices of their starter set was cheaper than anywhere else I called/visited. 37% cheaper than PETCO.
Customer Service
- They patiently explained everything ( for 10+ min to another customer before me too) that I needed to get my aquarium started.
- They even helped assemble my hood since they said a lot of people usually break it when assembling.
- Also, like other Yelpers mentioned, they recommend stuff, but they make sure you don't feel pressured to buy.
Neighborhood Store
- Always good to support the locals
Expertise
- I've been here twice, and both times, "regulars" always stop by to get stuff. Regulars, like the people who have 8+ tanks (from my conversations with other customers), are also on a first name basis with the owner. They probably know more about fishes than I do, and they come here, so that must mean something.
- I overheard a guy say he moved to Alameda, but still makes the drive to SF to come back to this store.
Walked away feeling very good about my purchase. -

For those who want to buy fish but don't want to take the trouble to resuscitate fish bought/rescued from 6th Ave. Aquarium which is right in the neighborhood, Lucky Ocean is the place to go.
Their livestock is handpicked from the wholesalers and almost all marine fish I bought from them live for over a year.
Eg. Coris formosa, Amphiprion ocellaris, even a Pygoplites diacanthus!
Steve is very knowledgeable and Ken (havent seen him for a long time) is absolutely helpful and friendly.
Of course you cannot expect Lucky Ocean's prices to be as cheap as
the bag-lot fish at 6th Avenue but consider the difference in the amount of risk you take, Lucky ocean is the pick. -

i just had 3 goldfish die on me and the one that is left is on deaths door. steve at lucky aquarium walked me through everything. he told me my fish had a 35% survival rate, and asked me how i wanted to proceed. yeah, im the type to try. i figured if this fish survived everything i did wrong as a new fish owner, and survived the huge mass tank suicide, then i owed it to this $3 fish to try $12 worth of antibiotics/treament! steve held my hand and gave me step by step instructions. i really appreciated that!

The best place to go for beginner tips and healthy fish!
All my fish died from the 6th Ave Aquarium on Clement. (Note my review of them, NEVER go there) Being very discouraged I went to Lucky Ocean and got a ton of really helpful tips and some really healthy cute fish.
My fish have lived for about 4 months now and they have had two sets of twins! I didn't really intend on breeding fish but apparently the two original fish I got really hit it off. The Platy that I got has live births, I later found out when I saw two teeny tiny fish, and they're very playful and cute.
I highly recommend this place and the staff couldn't be more helpful! -

My #1 go-to fish store in the city! A small store with a lot of knowledge and good advice!
Store Info: Lucky Ocean, owned by Steve, is a small store located in the Richmond district. The store is about the size of a Motel 6 single room. The parking is horrible and I usually have to park 1 or 2 blocks away. Do not let the small size and bad parking situation turn you away! This is the best fish store in SF!
Displays: Due to it's small size, there isn't really a designated display tank for Steve to show off. He has his own clownfish behind the counter in a nano reef, but that's about it. The rest of his "displays" are his sale tanks.
Selection: If I had to estimate, I would say livestock is 50/50 salt and fresh. There's a lot of freshwater, but I have no knowledge of freshwater stuff except for bettas, but there aren't much of those. In the saltwater tanks, there's a pretty good variety of hardy beginner fishes and also tangs, angels, and more advance types. The common, easy to find species seem to be always in stock or can be requested in a week's time.
A small coral selection, nothing fancy, but a good selection for someone starting or just looking for some good looking specimens.
In terms of equipment, there is a lot, so much that Steve ends up hiding a lot of the stock due to space. Always ask first before assuming he doesn't have it. He'll either have it hidden or recommend another solution.
Health: Fish are quarantined for a couple of days and then put into the new arrivals tank. Tanks are very clean if it needs to be. Don't expect the live rock tank to be clean.
Prices: Probably the best prices available! Fish prices are the market value and coral species seems to be the same price, regardless of the price.
Customer Service: Always get a greeting when I come in even if Steve is busy with a customer and he's hidden from sight. He'll come out to greet his customers, by name if he knows them. His employees are the same. Always great advice and recommendations without pushing products. If they don't think it's a good idea, they'll tell you, but ultimately, it's your choice. No problems asking them questions about my tank and Steve will even tell me which other stores might have what I need.
Personal Experience: When I first started in the hobby, I went to a lot of places before finding Lucky Ocean, which was actually 5 blocks from work. I am very happy I found this place! Steve is a friendly guy who does not act all high-and-mighty to the beginners and is very helpful! He pointed me away from products that are not worth it and from fishes that will cause problems (damsels). My fish tank owes a lot to Lucky Ocean. Sometimes, I just drop by to ask questions.
Conclusions: The best fish store in SF!! It's not as fancy as a lot of the stores out there, but I can always find answers here. There's a reason why Lucky Ocean is the only 5 star fish store on Yelp-SF! -

I came here to get a new fish on the strength of the Yelp reviews. I went in and the man working there asked me what I needed.
I told him I wanted to get a goldfish, and his response was what sealed the deal for me.
Instead of asking me my price range, he asked me if I had the tank set up.
I told him I did, for a couple days already, and he told me I had done exactly the right thing.
We walked back to the goldfish tanks and I picked one out, a beautiful little fish I named Hershel.
The man checked Hershel out to make sure he looked okay, and off Hershel and I rode into the sunset (well, walked off into the Richmond, but details, details...)
It's been almost a month and Hershel looks happy and healthy, so I'll give Lucky Ocean 4 stars and a big thanks for adding Hershel fish to my happy household. -

It doesn't seem Steve need another 5 star review. He's getting one anyways.:
I bought a pair of goldfish almost 5 years ago and I have purchased all my supplies at Lucky Ocean since then. Every time I come in he asks about my 2 goldfish! HE REMEMBERS I bought 2 goldfish.Right there I'm sold! He Keeps his fish stock moving and always has a great selection of freshwater plants. Super competitive pricing on supplies (usually cheaper!). Thanks Lucky Ocean! -

I really like this place. The owner is a great buy and knows his stuff well. He won't lie to you to make that extra dollar. I wish there were more varieties of corals though ( high end frags). The prices here are also great. Usually retail stores charge and arm and a leg for equipment, but the owner tries to match online prices. I got a Koralia Evolution for almost the same price as marine depot. Marine depot probably would've cost more with shipping.
five starts for a great man and great store -

I went here cus I was looking for Betta fish tanks and look at their selection as well as peruse the other fish since I would like to buy some of them in the future. Sad to say their Betta fish selection is very small compared to the one on Clement.
The owner (or guy behind the desk) was very helpful and nice to us. Of course, he was trying to sell me a bigger tank (for future fish) than I inquired about but not in a car salesman type of way. A positive experience for me. I will be back in the future. -

I shopped with them when they first open and got to say that I'm surprised that the same owner is still in business. Steve is a straight shooter and knows his stuff when it comes to keeping fishes. Sometimes a little inpatient with customers, but most of the time, he's an OK guy. I would highly recommend shopping here to get what you need and an honest guy who will back his products he sells (except for dead fish, no one does).
Parking is absolutely murder there, good luck. -

Oakland, CA
I found this "treasure" of a place after googling it on my phone while I was standing in the midst of a horrible experience at Ocean Treasures aquarium.
Found this place and decided to drive over. I was initially nervous when I entered - the place is packed, and every inch of the store is filled with supplies.
The aquatics/tank section was great - big tanks and a U-shaped walk-around design with an easy breakdown of fresh vs. marine.
The prices were right on par and the tank supplies (light bulbs, media, etc.) was PLENTIFUL. Seriously, they're like the mini-costco of marine stuff.
The real test? Customer service. The guy at the front-desk answered all my questions, even gave me the number of another person that could help with some of my reef questions and even unexpectedly followed-up with a phone call the day after.
I was happy to help support this business and plan on spending future bucks here... I only wish they had a stronger coral selection :( -

I know I know, great overall rating, but here is my skinny.
Freshwater - 4
Products - 5
Saltwater - 3
Great little selection of freshwater fish. nothing out of the ordinary, but well priced and helathy for the most part.
products are literally stacked to the ceiling. they are also priced pretty well. doesn't have some of the less used items like CO2 regulators but that's ok.
saltwater fish are also pretty healthy I'd say. not a big selection at all, but nice looking angels, and good beginner fish as well. corals and inverts pretty muc non-existent.
Key points - what turned me off is the ATTITUDE. if you are the soup nazi then you can get away with it. but this place isn't of that calibur. no wonder why it seems dead in there always - regardless of the great rating. place is a decent mom and pop shop otherwise. not really my cup of tea or for someone past the beginner stage i think. though either -

This is the only home aquarium store to visit in San Francisco. The guy (Steve) who owns the place is super-knowledgeable and helpful. He won't sell you sick fish, or make you buy a bunch of crap you don't need. He has a lot of experience with what works and what doesn't and will take the time to explain what, how, and why you should or shouldn't do something. I've learned some of my favorite aquarium-care tips from him.
He quarantines his loaches so you don't infect your whole tank with Ich, and I'm sure takes similar precautions with other fish. While the store is small and tightly packed, he'll have everything you need.
DO NOT GO TO 6th AVENUE AQUARIUM (unless they have something specific that you can't get from Steve). Those guys are indifferent crooks who sell you sick fish and don't care, although they do carry a specific line of custom made fake plants that are really nice. -
Review from Jay B.
Union City, CA
Lucky Ocean is the place to go. Steve is a helpful, friendly, no bullshit, tell you how it is guy. If there is something that is not going to work in your tank he's going to tell you instead of trying to make the sale. I have been going there ever since I started my nano reef and could not be happier with the products, prices and service. I don't know how Steve does it but he remembers everything he's sold you and everything you have told him about your tank.
My most recent purchases were a nice Ricordea-Yuma and a clownfish. The clownfish was so healthy he was coming up to my hand eating from it the first day. The Yuma is happier than a pig in shit and is already opening all the way up which usually takes 2 weeks!
Prices are extremely reasonable compared to some of the other Bay Area stores I've been to, selection is pretty solid. Every time I go in there Steve tries to figure out a way to save me money.
Definitely worth a visit, good people, good fish. -

Easy parking. Great variety Lots of freshwater and Marine. I really like the variety of Cichlids (wheras most of the auariums I visited only had 6"+ cichlids). The owner was knowledgeable and eager to help answer my questions I would definitely go back! There was a wealth of product for very reasonable prices as well.

When I first started reefing over a year ago, it was Steve I went to because of all the great reviews on Yelp.
I live in SoMA & I will drive PAST several "other" fish stores to go to Lucky Ocean.
Steve & his crew are always VERY helpful, will listen to what concerns I have, & will work with me to make my tank the very best.
His saltwater fish are SUPER healthy, the products he carries are top notch, and in truth, its the service that will continue to drive me to Inner Richmond, even if it's just for a $5 pack of frozen food.
Speaking of driving, I've NEVER had ANY issues parking. It's not metered, and is in a residential neighborhood, so parking is very easy to come by!
Go to Lucky Ocean, your fish will thank you for it!!! -

So I am not experienced when it comes to caring for fish or starting an aquarium, so I needed a lot of advice and help with picking compatible fish, and learning the idiosyncrasies of the various species. I had to wait a bit as there were many customers when I was there, and this means a lot of shuffling around as there is little space here, but it was well worth the wait. The guy was very helpful, explained to me which fish could go together, some handy rules of thumb for when I am unsure, and made some great suggestions when I told him what I had envisioned for my fish tank.
The choice is pretty good, and none of the tanks were super crowded which made me happy, but most importantly the fish have survived and I have had no problems, so the guy's advice at least thus far has proved accurate. -

It may not look like much from the outside, but this is the place to go if you are starting a marine aquarium. The store is well-stocked and they have everything you need to start or maintain a tank
Best of all, the staff is friendly, patient and full of practical advice. They strive to stock only healthy fish and, with a surprisingly constant stream of customers, the fish stock seems to turn over pretty quickly. In fact, regular customers arrive on delivery days, often buying fish before they hit the tanks. -

They have a lot of fish and supplies here. They don't have as much variety as the 6th Avenue Aquarium but this place is far more better than that aquarium. The fish are more healthy looking and have bigger tanks to swim in. Service is spectacular too, Steve really knows his fish stuff, whether its temperature, tank sizes, tank mates, etc etc. He'll make sure you have everything you need and make sure you know what you're doing right when you get home. He'll ask you if you have any questions a bunch of times before you leave.
I bought a freshwater dwarf puffer. I'm so excited! =) -

A small store, but it has a good selection of equipment and a very friendly, helpful staff. They have a medium sized selection of both fresh, salt, and reef livestock, and it all looks healthy.
They do not have saltwater for sale.

This store is not very big and parking in the Richmond SUCKS! Steve is very knowledgeable and will give you advice. Like I said small shop so not much SW fish as other stores in SF.
When I went there Steve was the only one there. As soon as others came in he had to help them. Wish there was more staff there.
Don't bother calling because it appears that nobody answers the phone. I tried calling 2 days in a row and no answer. Like I said, wish there was more staff here. -

This place is by far the best fish store I've ever been to. Not only are the products up to take, they have the most reliable and affordable equipments I've ever purchased. Now, before you buy any living creature, the best thing to do is ask about it first, like when did they get the product in, or do they have any problems like sickness and things like that right. And they will, they will answer any questions you throw that them and with full details on why and why not.
Now i like to say the staff there name David is the most helpful person I've ever met as far as customer service wise and knowledge of productivity. he makes me feel right at home, gives me the feeling of not having to shop at other locations ever again. because of him, I'm never going to step foot into 6Th ave fish store ever again. David not only introduced me into the world of fish but also educated me alot too. He sold me a starter tank plus all the supplies and fish for way below what any where else can offer you. nice, friendly and extremely helpful. -

Beautiful and Clean!!! The guy at the front greeted us within 10 seconds of our arrival. He was knowledgeable and thoughtful. Their tanks were gorgeous. We had wanted freshwater/brackish puffers and he recommended another fish store that would supply healthy puffers.
Way to go guy! You got yourself new patrons!
