Have you seen the show Extreme Makeover, or The Swan? Where you take an average to uglier looking person, give them a haircut, give them some new teeth, new clothes, and they come out actually looking pretty decent?
We just had a similar experience when we picked up our dog Apple from Kurt today. I really didn't know what to expect since it was the first time for us ever taking a dog to a groomer... It was also Apple's first grooming experience, and I knew that she'd probably be trying to wriggle around, making work a bit tougher for Kurt. Well, Kurt worked his magic and took our scruffy mini Schnauzer, and made her look so different, I wasn't even sure if it was the same dog! She went from a shaggy Schnauzer to a very clean cut little pooch! Sure enough, her hyper little self came through again, she gave her high pitched Schnauzer bark, and we knew it was her again.
Yes, getting booked can be tough, but keep in mind that the best come to those who wait. I respect that Kurt doesn't feel the urge to just keep growing his business by bringing in other groomers... He just makes sure that all of his current clients are happy, which of course is keeping him incredibly busy.
My sister Pearl told me about this place, and upon yelping, I discovered it's right behind my work, which is about 1/2 a mile from where I live! I just showed up with my terrier mix, Sniffles, around 12:30 on Saturday. Khurt's extremely busy with tons of dogs around, but he made time to give my Sniffles a nice bath and trim. Well, my Sniffles has short hair everywhere except for his nose, so only his nose was trimmed. He was all ready to go when I came back 2 hours later.
Service was great, Sniffles smells great, and the price is great too! The vet charged more for the bath, and he came out all stinky and his nails weren't even trimmed!
Excellent job on my adopted terrier. Can't wait to go back. Affordable, fast and my dog looks more handsome than ever. Thanks Khurt!
I just took my Snorkie in today for a haircut. He's never looked better and the owner has a true understanding of dogs!!! I felt very comfortable leaving my little one in his care. Even though he was obviously very busy he still took time to visit with me and my pup before we left. We will definitely be going back!
I discovered this place over 5 years ago when I had my Corgi and I will naver take my dogs anywhere else.
Khurt is truly the BEST... and even though he has playfully nicknamed my dog Lucky ,"Knucklehead" (because he's a bit difficult to groom) I love this place.
I have 2 small dogs who (yes, I'm one "of those" ) I consider my children, so you can imagine, I'm loathe to leave them with A-N-Y-O-N-E... but at Lucky Dog, I always know that I'm leaving my dogs in the very best hands, because Khurt and his staff treat every dog like they're their own.
The place is clean and the prices are resonable AND if you can catch Kurt on the phone early in the mornings, sometimes he'll try to squeeze you in for that day, which is always a pleasant surprise.
I have two dogs... Poodle and Schnoodle. They keep K. busy, and he always does a great job. He is so popular you may have to wait a week or more. He stays so busy, it is often easier to go in person to schedule the grooming appointment. He will return your call, but it may take a few days. The best groomer in LA... Loves dogs, and has a high standard for customer service...
Just got my dog back from grooming today. As usual they did a good job and are the only place in town that I've found can get the traditional Scottie look just right. Khurt is the owner and does all the grooming himself. He specializes in terriers and is very knowledgeable. He allowed me to take a tour to have a look around my first time coming here. The atmosphere isn't all that nice, but practical. Crates are nice and big. Khurt may seem distant at times, but he's always willing to talk at length to answer your questions and concerns. I dropped Angus off at 8AM this morning and Khurt had him ready by 12PM. Pretty good turnaround! They also seem to make a point to file your dog's nails in addition to clipping them which I thought was a nice service. Price is $45, which is very reasonable compared to other places. I've been places where they charge $60. One nice perk they do have is a cage free doggy day care so you know that if you can't pick up your dog until the end of the day. Location is pretty good. The Wine House is across the street so you can pick up some nice wines, beers, or other alcohol products here. There is also a Breadworks up the street where you can grab lunch or a nice loaf of bread.
You have to call up to a week in advance. They don't have anyone answering the phones so more often than not you'll have to leave a message and get a call back. But I don't mind it because they aren't trying to cram in as many appointments as they possibly can which allows me to drop my dog off at any time that's convenient and get him back within a few hours. I enjoy that. They aren't high tech here. Lucky Dog isn't trying to be the best and biggest in LA. There are a number of trends that they seem to shun. While I think it's good that they aren't trying to be a jack of all trades, there are some finesse areas that aren't addressed. There isn't any pricing list available for each service. Parking is limited, only two spots up front. They don't have a store for dog items attached. Probably because it's too much of a pain to stock merchandise and charge for it. But these little details aren't mandatory by any means and I'm definitely impressed with the work they do here.
I would definitely recommend that you give this place a try and judge for yourself. It took me a while to go through several different groomers, but now that I have, I can fully appreciate Lucky Dog for the great work they do!
Simply the best! Lucky Dog Grooming is owned by former Ratt drummer, Khurt Maier. He does the grooming himself and he is the "Neil George" for dogs. If Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan were dogs, they would want Khurt to groom them. Not only is he a genius with the shears, he has a unique relationship with your dog. He becomes the dog's friend. My dog hates to be groomed, but when I say we are going to see Khurt, she gets excited. Not only is he the best there is in the area, he is cheap! Simply the best!
Khurt is the best groomer ever! He grooms my shih tzu Owen, and I am always pleased with the results. Owen loves going there too! This is the BEST groomer on the westside!
